We're rather surprised that the mechanics and aesthetics of Firewatch weren't emulated by all manner of indie studios following its release all the way back in 2016, so it actually feels like Arctic Awakening has been a long time coming. It does have quite a lot to call its own though, with the most obvious being a wintery setting and an AI companion robot. It is also going to be episodic, and is targeting a release in 2022 for PlayStation 5 and PS4.
The game is set in 2062 and follows Kai after he survives a plane crash during the arctic winter. With co-pilot Donovan lost, the protagonist is joined by an AI robot named Alfie. You'll be able to affect the relationship's Kai holds with other people through dialogue options and optional events. Game director James Simpson describes Arctic Awakening as one of "survival, friendship, self-discovery, and the mysteries [the characters] encounter along the way." Looking pretty good, right? I liked the way this one looked, but I'm really turned off by any game that chooses an episodic approach. The whole game in one package, please.
I think it's an absolute crime that we haven't had another game from Campo Santo. Loved Firewatch, and was really excited about their follow up In The Valley Of The Gods, but appears that's been scrapped since they were acquired by Valve. Hope this one scratches that itch, looks interesting.
Arctic Awakening Looks Like Episodic Firewa- YES.
