Update: If you've been unsuccessful in your attempt to upgrade to the PS5 version of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, give it one more shot. We've received widespread reports that the problem is now fixed, and Activision also reports the "issue has been resolved". With more PS5 upgrades just around the corner, including Marvel's Avengers, let's hope this is the last time this happens.
Original story: Well, we really are in a bit of a pickle now. Some PlayStation 5 users reported over the weekend that they were unable to grab the free next-gen upgrade for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, with the issue seemingly affecting digital players across Europe. We covered the problem and assumed this would be a quick fix, much like what happened with Yakuza: Like a Dragon when the same issue arose. However, three days after the PS5 version launched, some budding Crash 4 players still can't upgrade to the latest version.
Troubled customers have responded in the comments section of our original article, reporting that the option for a PS5 upgrade isn't there. Members of online gaming forums are also unable to access the PS5 version despite originally owning the game on PS4. What is surely most frustrating though is that Activision hasn't issued any update on the matter since the problem was discovered. Writing on the Activision Support Twitter account, the publisher said on Friday: "We're actively investigating an issue where some players are having problems upgrading their version of #Crash4 from PS4 to PS5. Stay tuned for updates.
Except there hasn't been any updates since then and replies to the tweet itself have been disabled. To be fair, the weekend has just past so the team will most likely have been taking some time off. If this issue persists throughout the coming week, however, then there may be a larger problem at play here. We'll reach out to Activision and provide any updates should they be made available.

Still not available to download it here in Ireland👎👎
@djhegzy
Same for me!
unavailable in Spain for now
This sucks, man. It nearly happened with Yakuza, too, although they did manage to fix that on launch day.
I don't blame Activision for this — it's on Sony.
@get2sammyb Why sony blame? Im just curious
It's not "some" its "a lot". It appears to be all those in EU/AU at least with the digital version upgrade. Here's hoping Avengers gets it right this week....
Yeah we’ve just had the weekend. Everyone just stop being so impatient.
The free update isn't here yet when they said it would be. I've already turned a few cars over and set fire to bins so won't be long now until Sony sort it out.
@jack22 It's likely a problem with how their PS5 upgrade system works. I've not heard of this happening with Xbox and Smart Delivery.
Activision is waiting for ps5 reviews to go live and then they will sell lootboxes which will have a chance to unlock a "free" ps4 to ps5 upgrade for you.
It's frustrating, but credit where it's due, Push Square has published two articles about this, while most sites, small and big, have largely ignored the issue. It's a bit annoying to see everyone rush to put out reviews etc only to ignore reporting on legitimate consumer issues. Keep up the good work peeps! 👍
I am not a fan of the upgrade system on PS5. I won't be buying any PS4 versions any more unless I get a PS4 version as a gift in error (some family members aren't gamers, so I cut them slack).
I do think that Sony hadn't planned for this. I think that Sony was going to treat cross-gen games as total separate releases with no upgrade route. I think Microsoft's approach to Smart Delivery and it's broad acceptance from some major publishers/developers forced Sony's hand in this matter.
I got the PS4 version of Miles Morales for Christmas that I hadn't started yet. When I inserted the disc on the PS4 I think I had to actually click on a shortcut to the PSN store page to "claim" the PS5 version and then it started downloading. It's just not intuitive.
Really should just be as simple as Insert Disc, get PS5 version. Done.
For digital it should be as simple as: if on PS5, download PS5 version (on internal). I would say "automatically delete PS4 version", but I would leave that up to the user.
I mean, I guess it's nice that you still have the choice to play the previous version (unlike Xbox where it kind of forces the Series X|S version), but if you are on a PS5, why would even want a PS4 version? There should be a reasonable expectation that the PS5 version isn't a hot mess and playing the PS4 version is the better experience.
I’m fine with smart delivery in the UK
on series x. Did it over the weekend.
My son doesn’t have it on his PS5 to try.
2 console house hold, best of both worlds.
Btw...they didn't do sh** the whole weekend they say they were investigating but they weren't for sure! I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with a fix today or tomorrow!
How hard can it be for a multibillion dollar company to fix this lol
Bought this at the weekend on the phone app and chose the option to download to the console from there. It managed to install both versions but the PS4 one was the version if decided to use when my other half first played it. I then had to move the cloud save over to the PS5 version of it and delete the PS4 version as that was 45 gig whereas the PS5 version is only 20 gig. Shame they don't seem to be able to sort that out so it's easier to see which version you are installing / playing. Oddly with some games it seems to say PS4 in the title but with crash it didn't.
Received the PS4 disc version today and installed it. No PS5 version to choose. Getting silly now. Haven’t had one problem with the Series X but a host of issues with my PS5.😫
Surely it’s a simple fix? Plus the amount of people affected by it is not good news for Sony. Fortunately now I have a PS5 all cross-gen games can be instantly bought but this is seriously annoying now as I’m eager to play through the game again yet see the word “unavailable” more frequently than my dating history ...
Nowt here in the UK.
Anyone else now not getting “unavailable” but just the price? I’m not buying the damn thing again but it’s still not registering I’ve already got it. I’ve even downloaded the PS4 version in case it was needed but it looks like the two versions aren’t linked on the store so choosing which version I want does nothing but link to the demo! It’s just utterly stupid that it’s still an issue after so many similar update cock ups ...
@SAMTYLER1974 I'm getting exactly the same issue here in the Netherlands. Both Sony and Activision should really get their act together. I left them an email as well, so we can't do anything but wait and see....
@SAMTYLER1974 yeah im getting the same now wants me to buy the game even tho I have it, hopefully this is a sign it is slowly being fixed and we can wake up tomorro and download it fingers crossed 🤞
Can't upgrade here in France ! But my account is in the UK. Bought it on sale last december.
Been affected by this myself. Just checked UK store and saw Crash 4 PS5 listed with a discounted price of34.99. Was previously unavailable. Added to basket and it was added with a discount applied bringing the price down to £0.00. Best guess was the PS5 version was not actually live on the store or did not have a release date. I looked at all PS5 games available on Saturday and Crash 4 was not listed. Downloading now.
@get2sammyb
I don’t understand how it can be Sony’s fault. If it works for other games then the mechanism is there, the developer just hasn’t implemented it correctly.
Okay, so it’s finally allowing me to download. Still said “unavailable” on the storefront but selecting it took me to download. Not sure whether you need to download the PS4 version for it to work but if you can’t still do it then I highly expect things to change very soon ... about time!
And finally working now.... Have fun y'all!
Well it's about time, they fixed it
I managed to upgrade via the PS App, so the storefront on console is most likely fixed now!
Like I said, problem is fixed now so it's obvious they did nothing over the weekend.
It working now!!!
Even worse for myself, I got round to trying the upgrade tonight... No sign of it. Says games updated.. So I read what to do.. I deleted the game (ps4 version) then go to do a fresh install.. I cant.. The ps5 version is now the only version available and the ps store says I should pay another £38 for it! So I can't even play my ps4 version. I've literally wasted my money on this game now. Really pissed off
Member when sony fans said smart delivery was just a marketing term. Yet i hear xbox users having no issues upgrading to Series X versions of Crash 4 or Like A Dragon.
So, seems there wasn’t any issue on Sony’s end after all (which is obvious given other devs don’t have this problem).
@thefourfoldroot Other devs absolutely do have this problem. It seems to be an EU Sony storefront problem.
I had this issue with Borderlands 3, Crash 4, and it looks like the Final Fantasy 7 upgrade is going to suffer from the same issue.
Noice. Hopefully they learnt what the issue was and it will be the last time. I know what I'll be playing this weekend!
@MikalM
If not all devs have the problem then it’s not a systemic issue on Sony’s side. They’ve likely just made it complicated and devs need to get to grips with it.
@thefourfoldroot ? The bug literally only affected games on the EU Sony store. Ergo it was a bug on the EU Sony storefront.
My experience with free PS5 upgrades is only with Borderlands 3, Ni-Oh 2, Crash 4 and now FF7R and every one of them has a problem activating the free upgrade. FF7R brings up the same message as the previous three games.
If the NA store doesn’t have this issue, it’s still a Sony issue.
@MikalM
I wasn’t aware the issue was restricted only to the EU store. If that’s the case it may well be an issue in Sony’s side.
Finally got mine downloading. I'm cockahoop about it! Really chuffed.
