We don't think it gets much clearer than this. After Xbox head Phil Spencer stated that "some" future Bethesda titles would be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC, the man leading the team in green has now clarified that this essentially means the publisher's entire line-up. Revealed as part of a roundtable discussion between Microsoft and Bethesda leads, Spencer said titles from each of the eight studios it has now acquired will ship "where Game Pass exists". Not on any PlayStation consoles then, essentially.
The full quote is as follows: "If you're an xbox customer, the thing I want you to know is that this is about delivering great exclusive games to you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists." Prior to that, Phil Spencer once again confirms Microsoft will honour any pre-existing deals, such as Sony's timed exclusivity contracts for Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Microsoft may also do things on other platforms where a franchise's "legacy" is a large factor, but we're honestly struggling to think of any Bethesda franchises that are heavily linked to PlayStation. Sure, the games have launched on PS4 and PS3 in the past, but previous deals have usually involved Microsoft. DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came to Xbox 360 first, for example.
I'm going to try to be as clear as I can because that's what I, I just think it's fair. So obviously I can't sit here and say every Bethesda game is exclusive because we know that's not true. There's contractual obligations that we're going to see through as we always do in every one of these instances. We have games that exist on other platforms and we're going to go support those games on the platforms they’re on. There are communities of players. We love those communities and we’ll continue to invest in them. And even in the future, there might be things that have either contractual things or a legacy on different platforms that we’ll go do.
But if you’re an Xbox customer the thing I want you to know is this is about delivering great exclusive games for you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists and that’s our goal. That’s why we’re doing this. That’s the root of this partnership that we’re building and the creative capability we will be able to bring to market for our Xbox customers, it is going to be the best it’s ever been for Xbox after we’re done here.
The likes of Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online will continue to receive support from Bethesda on PlayStation consoles, but this latest quote really does seem like the final nail in the coffin. Upcoming games from Bethesda will release where Game Pass exists, and unless Sony suddenly allows Microsoft to bring the service to PS5 and PS4, then you'll need an Xbox Series X|S or PC to experience future titles from the publisher.

Well there we go lol
I honestly thought they'd at least wrap up the currently multiplatform series first like Wolfenstein and the new DOOM games on those respective platforms, but guess that won't be the case after all
DOOM 3, only on Xbox and PC...again
The Elder Scrolls VI, only on Xbox and PC for the first time in like 19 years lol
Xbox and PC don't have Spider-Man, but they're sure as hell getting Indiana Jones
Game Pass makes me happy I have a PC since I can just skip Microsoft's consoles and play their exclusives on PC.
This is the big reason why I, personally, am not bothered by this acquisition.
So it’s exclusive unless there are communities and a game history on PlayStation, but they won’t say what qualifies as a community or legacy.
This is all getting a bit silly. Just say they are exclusive., and then deal with the accusations of lying later if you want to release on a different large platform.
Don’t say you are going to be clear and then add unspecified caveats.
"There are communities of players. We love those communities and we’ll continue to invest in them. And even in the future, there might be things that have either contractual things or a legacy on different platforms that we’ll go do."
Don' gloss over that. That also suggests that TES, DOOM, Wolfenstein, etc. will make it to other consoles.
@thefourfoldroot That's not what Phil said. He said they "might" put a game on another platform if it has a legacy there. And as I said in the article, what Bethesda franchises have a legacy with PlayStation?
@LiamCroft @GamingFan4Lyf Surely thay means titles like Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76 etc as there will be legacy player bases invested in those titles on the Playstation ecosystem?
@LiamCroft
Fallout, doom, elder scrolls, dishonoured, wolfenstein etc...if you take legacy as meaning a history across several titles in a franchise.
Ah well, still won't buy an Xbox. A real shame I will miss out on TES6 etc.
I wouldn't read too much into things, it's pretty clear that once Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo release, that's game over for new games. Obviously they'll continue to update Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls as well.
It's a real big shame, but it is what it is. It's done now.
@thefourfoldroot That's not what Phil means in this context. He's referring to franchises that are closely linked to a console, meaning you associate those two brands together. For example, I would associate Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid with PlayStation. However, I would never associate The Elder Scrolls or Fallout with Sony. It's PC and then Xbox.
Why am I not surprised? I have known this since the first announcement. It is like saying “I wanna play Horizon Forbidden West on Xbox Series, finger crossed”
People get over this. If you love Bethesda games so much, then just get PC or Xbox.
@stormyuk Should get a PC at least
You get all the Xbox games and the best versions of multiplats in addition to Sony now supporting the platform with updated versions of their first party and second party lineup
@get2sammyb If this does mean those games are gone from PlayStation, then this is an opportunity for Sony to try to make a better "Bethesda" game.
Competition breeds innovation, right?
So this proves Phil spencer is a giant liar. He stated how many times he doesn’t want to take games from anyone..............the good news is Bethesda soft works hasn’t made a good game since Skyrim so there is that.
@LiamCroft
? That’s a big presumption. Why do you read “legacy and community on different systems” as being synonymous with “associated mainly with a specific console”
@LiamCroft They Have More Of a Legacy On The PC Then Anything Unless You Count That Fallout Spinoff Game That Come out on the ps2
Is this still going on lol. 😴😴😴😴
@QueenOfHearts38 Implying corporations ever cared about your feelings
If Sony can moneyhat like 15 different third party titles for timed exclusivity of varying lengths to their shiny new console it's fair that Microsoft gets to play dirty too. I'm all for it
Sony tried to slug Microsoft in the testicles with stuff like FFXVI, Deathloop, FFVII Remake, and GhostWire? Microsoft is coming for that ass
I don’t see Phil Spencer explicitly stating Starfield or Elder Scrolls are exclusive to Xbox, or else wouldn’t he have said that?
@LiamCroft To be fair, I do understand why people could potentially find this ambiguous, though. This is a very subjective and personal connection that someone might have; some kids will have absolutely grown up with Skyrim and Fallout on a PlayStation, and it's "legacy" to them.
However, I do think the statement is clear enough. There's really no point picking the wording apart anymore.
So Dethloop will Drop on PC Gamepass day one along with Ps5 then
@TheFrenchiestFry not saying they do and where did i say they care? What i am saying is I’m not the one who has been saying that they don’t want to take games away from people and then turn around and take games from people.
Hopefully no one will keep trying to find ambiguity on this message. All it would do is hurt everyone, including users that buy x or y console because someone convinced them that this or that game would eventually come to what they were pushing for.
Suck it jim ryan
@get2sammyb I’m sorry if someone grew up playing Skyrim on a PS3, that could scar you for life 😂
@TrueAssassin86x No. Microsoft have said already that they're honoring any timed exclusivity deals on existing games, which means Deathloop and GhostWire are still going to be temporarily console exclusive to PS5 when they release and won't drop on anything PC related outside Steam and EGS
@GamingFan4Lyf I've been hoping for the exact same thing for a few months now.
Hopefully this pushes Sony into looking at the western style RPG genre a little more and putting some energy there.
I'd love to see something like King's Field making a come back, or for Sony to invest in Project Awakening. Or some new IP to freshen the space up.
@TheFrenchiestFry have fun with that bet
Presumably Sony isn’t worried about Bethesda, this news hasn’t brought out the big Ragnarok guns we know they’re packin, and with a few paltry 1st party offerings on pc the platform is seemingly experimental akin to VR
As a matter of fact Sony has shown more support for VR than porting games to PC
@QueenOfHearts38 It's all PR speak to begin with. Both Phil Spencer and Jim Ryan have said a lot of exaggerated or overambitious stuff about their prospects
You also don't buy a company for more than Disney bought Marvel and Lucasfilm and then share with other people either
Nothing will change for me. I don't buy bethesda games unless they're a fiver for the fps's. I can happily live without that. IF they eventually make some AAA bangers, i'll buy an xbox.
Like Sammy said before just assume everything moving forward won't be on Playstation and be pleasently surprised if something does come over.
Kudos to Microsoft because this was a giant power move, let's see what Sony does assuming they don't just respond by closing another studio.
DO NOT PROCEED. THERE IS AN ONGOING WAR IN THE COMMENT SECTION AND I DON'T RECOMMEND YOU TO JOIN IN.
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Well PlayStation players, are you ready to fish out some money for Microsoft? This is obviously a joke, but now with this news, I'm interested in what people are going to do about this.
Despite the loopholes he’s left, I’m going to presume that they will keep things exclusive to Gamepass /Xbox /PC.
With this the case I hope Sony invest in creating Elder Scroll type games. Would be great if a large RPG was created, but with Sony’s narrative flair and polish (meaning no Bethesda bugs).
@2cents
VR lol who really cares about VR.
This comment was clear as mud, as usual per Spencer.
This quote literally reads “All upcoming Bethesda titles will appear on Gamepass” basically confirming you cheapskates won’t have to buy their buggy games anymore just continue to download and not play them like the rest of Gamepass library
The only time “exclusivity” is mentioned is in beginning of statement Phil states “obviously I can’t sit here and say every game is exclusive”
Followed by “ship great exclusives games to you on Gamepass” - nowhere does he imply games will be taken away from other platforms
I thought Uncle Phil was all pro-consumer and didn't even see Sony as a rival?
Turns out that was pure bs as I long suspected.
Not getting a penny of my money Phil.
@HotGoomba Get ready to see that giant green X when you start Deathloop on the PS5 lol
@TrueAssassin86x
VR was the best thing about last gen by far. Astro Bot Rescue Mission one of the best games ever and Resi7 in VR infinitely better than flat Resi7.
Lots of us care about VR but, to answer your question, those who don’t care are usually those who haven’t tried it or haven’t tried it with a decent game.
@TheFrenchiestFry nah my day of building gaming PCs are long behind me. I'll live. 🤣
@LiamCroft I own Skyrim on PS3. I suggested it to my teen son recently who was looking for something to play. He said it looked good, then spent his own money on the PC version b/c he said he wasn't playing it on PS3. I borrowed the Switch cart from the library recently, seemed like a better choice, so my PS3 version has still never been played. 😂
On Bethesda, I wouldn't expect a company to spend all that money then share the wealth, but has it mattered what any of these companies have said the past 5 years or so? Whatever they say is valid for today, tomorrow who knows. But if I were a Bethesda fan I'd be planning on PC gaming for the foreseeable future.
@Col_McCafferty I'm sure you're doing great things for society with such a bold statement. Phil Spencer must be crying under the bed he made out of all the money he got from Game Pass subscriptions
@TheFrenchiestFry You going to buy one for us? Heck, I can't even get hold of a PS5!
Only in the gaming world are the better off people lauded and catered for. Is gaming for everyone or just the rich?
I hope there's already existing contracts to release Fallout 5 and Starfield on playstation, but not going to hold my breath. Fallout was fun while it lasted. Maybe game pass will come to playstation someday and I can play their games again. Even with this news, I'm not interested in switching to xbox.
I don't know why anyone pays attention to what Spencer says. He contradicts himself all the time or we find out later what he was saying was rubbish.
@Col_McCafferty I only got a PS5 myself because I got lucky through staying up until 12 in the morning for a Walmart drop and it hasn't even arrived yet
I already have a PC and don't feel like sharing. You'll have to pay ME to share my games with you lol
@LiamCroft "He's referring to franchises that are closely linked to a console, meaning you associate those two brands together."
I do am curious if that message is a hidden clue at future things, be it acquisitions or just projects.
The only such legacy I can thin of are all Rare games on Nintendo consoles. New entries of Banjo or Conqer on Switch and XBox?
@HotGoomba true gamers don’t have brand loyalty they simply support great games made by passionate artists, if Deathloop meets that requirement I’ll give it my money regardless of who profits
Xbox knows these facts so they created Gamepass because making great games and selling them traditionally wasn’t working. Now they’re repackaged in a subscription format for $9.99 and suddenly it’s a great deal!!
Microsoft simply has the cash to bribe 3rd party developers onto an experimental ecosystem! Fantastic value for gamers!! That doesn’t discount the value PlayStation offers even when facing game price increases
I think Microsoft is banking solely PS owners will consider the series S plus gamepass as a way to keep access to Bethesda games.
@TheFrenchiestFry You on the correct site?
🤔
@Dr_ENT you can play horizon on Xbox now over GeForce now through the Xbox browser. With God of War and Days Gone coming soon.
@aj102404 Or PC. They dont care if you buy it off Steam and run it on a potato laptop.
@stormyuk I mean, you could just wait until the Xbox Series S is like $250, $200 and just enjoy Bethesda games like that.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also has cloud gaming where you can play Bethesda games on your phone and/or tablet. Idk if you'll spend $15 a month for that, but it's an option. You can even use a Dualsense/Dualshock for that.
It seems I was wrong on two counts.
But I’m glad they were clear with this.
By the time Starfield comes out, the Series S will probably be down to $250maybe $200 I'll pick one up for that, and for ES 6. Probably use Gamepass to sample the library at that time.
@LiamCroft Touche!
@QueenOfHearts38 If I bought a company for as much as seven billion dollars, why would I put it on other platforms? Also, Xbox management isn't just Phil Spencer. Not saying that he should have kept PS fans' hopes up, but still.
Being respectful what did every gamer in the know expect to happen. I expected exactly this.
Just like you won’t get a Naughty Dog PS5 exclusive on Xbox consoles.
It’s business that’s all.
You make your choice and buy what platform and games you want to play.
Be it Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft and their exclusives.
@TrueAssassin86x HAHAHAHAHAHAH, oh wait ur serious?
Sony, over to you. You going to stand for this or just going to give up? Port more and more titles to PC and just become a software developer?
@Col_McCafferty again, Phil doesn't make all the decisions here. Not that he's in the right, but still, you have to remember that Microsoft and Xbox have multiple parts of management. So you can't put all the blame on Phil Spencer.
By the way, another thing they mentioned was something about patching a bunch of their older games for better performance on the new xbox, but they're not going to be doing that for the playstation versions.
noms on popcorn and watches I just love the fact I own both consoles so this doesn't bother me one bit.
@2cents
There are so many quotes that were like a fart in the wind. One of my favourite haha:
'Just being honest, I felt good after seeing their show,” he continued. “I think the hardware advantages that we’ve built are going to show up as we’re talking more about our games and frame rates and other things. I thought the games lineup that we’re gonna have at launch, I felt really good about. '
I hope Deathloop flops on PS5. Don't give them your money, people!
@TrueAssassin86x I own both consoles plus switch, but you don't hear me bragging.
@Dezzy70 This is a little different though. Sony and Nintendo made most of their exclusives from scratch with no suggestion of the games ever releasing anywhere else.
It's odd to see Xbox users so ecstatic about essentially getting a load of games they would have got either way. The only real change is that it looks like a load of people won't get those games as well now. Whatever way you look at it Microsoft are simply taking something away from the industry, not adding to it.
@TheFrenchiestFry Timed exclusivity is completely different than buying an entire major 3rd party publisher because you can't make any decent games with your own first party studios. It amazes me that dumb people think this is good because 'durr gamepass cheap durrr". Microsoft has a terrible history of buying out the competition to overtake an industry and this is the start. If you think this isn't going to impact the quality and style of games Bethesda releases you're dreaming.
@TrueAssassin86x Good for you, you earn enough to do both and have the space to store both consoles. You're a true hero.
😒
@aj102404 I won't be. Bethesda just lose my money but, I suspect MS don't need it. Which is fair enough. I'll play other games.
@Col_McCafferty Calm down lol Xbox isn't a communist country or something. And as @2cents said, true gamers aren't about brand royalty, they're about the games and making fun of Ouya and Stadia.
@HotGoomba
But you dont see me bashing sony fans on this site. Like you just did as i type this
@Old-Red Exactly. 👏👏👏👏
@Old-Red
That’s a fair opinion, but I’m not bragging
I just said it was business and you buy what platform and games you like.
I could say Sony buying insomniac took future games away from others.
And let’s not forget Sony did buy Naughty Dog originally.
This is nothing new buying companies.
Death (on PS5) to Deathloop (and Ghostwire but that game looks poor anyway)!
I've long since moved past Bethesda at this point so this isn't really an issue to me, but it makes Phil Spencer's pro consumer 'gaming is for everyone' rhetoric ring pretty hollow.
@GamingFan4Lyf I love this positivity. It will be interesting to see how Sony adapts to this and as you suggested maybe attempts a Elder Scrolls, Fable, Fallout style game. Though that’s potentially a long way off.
@TheFrenchiestFry Indiana Jones is an interesting one as there COULD be an existing deal with Lucasfilm to make this available across platforms. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.
@HotGoomba nothing you have said takes away the fact that he’s a liar
@TrueAssassin86x I don't remember bashing anyone for being a Sony fan. I'm telling people about how brand royalty bad and how people are just pointing all the blame on Phil Spencer. The only person I'm really bashing is you for making fun of VR for like no reason and pointing out the fact that YOU have both PS and Xbox.
@QueenOfHearts38 k lol its ur opinion, and if ur not gonna change it and as long as it isn't offensive or awful, cool.乁(ツ)ㄏ
@Col_McCafferty "Sony, over to you. You going to stand for this or just going to give up? Port more and more titles to PC and just become a software developer?"
Is XBox just a software developer because their games are also on PC?
Sony already has been firing left and right, if anything, this is a counter shot. Sony signed exclusivity deals for a whole bunch of games, including 2 that MS just bought but wont be able to put on XBox, and Final Fantasy games, etc etc.
Sooner or later MS was going to shoot back, and hard.
@Dezzy70 That is such an idiotic comparison. Sony has only purchased studios that were either 2nd party or really only made Playstation exclusive games. Naughty Dog, Guerilla, Insomniac, etc are all studios that made 90%+ of their games only for Playstation to begin with. That's completely different than a massive 3rd party publisher that makes countless games for every platform.
Not much of a loss. Yes Bethesda make certain kinds of open world games most other devs do not, and they’re fun for a lot of people but they’re of questionable quality under any serious scrutiny. I should clarify, not much of a loss for me I guess. I’m more torn up Obsidian will be the same
Calm down all.
Let’s just game and enjoy.
They won't be missed. Xbox is welcome to Fallout 77.
@Dezzy70 The difference is obviously beyond your understanding. Sony grew these studios over time and each were purchased separately
MS just got out the old cheque book and made a purchase beyond Sony's power for several IPs and developers all at the same time. Instead of growing organically and cultivating their own existing studios and talent, they just took a massive shortcut and are now gloating about it.
I hope they don't make any future purchases of major third party developers but I suspect they will and all to force gamers to invest in their ecosystem, killing the competition in the process.
I don't mind there being competition, on forcing us to make a choice to game on which platform suits us best. Short term this deal won't make much difference to the gaming landscape but longer term it promises a depressing future for anyone that values variety and choice.
For me, its as @get2sammyb said in another article, its not worth agonising over anymore. If a Bethesda title ends up coming to Playstation, great. But no point debating about it or wasting time thinking about it until it gets announced now. All we do by talking about it, is get people talking about Xbox, which is what Phil Spencer wants.
This is potentially a huge market that has just opened up. A game company stands to make an awful lot of money on Playstation platforms to fill the Bethesda shaped hole that has been left behind.
Ill be honest though. This one stings. Not because i am too sad about losing Bethesda's output (but i am sorry for those that are. This truly sucks). But i am so concerned about what this means for the future of gaming. Microsoft have said they arn't done, so what else are they going to take away. Feels like they are going to bully and push until Sony allows game pass on the platform, which is never going to happen. And Sony are bound to respond somehow, which will further fracture and isolate the market. The future gaming landscape is depressing quite frankly
checks games library to see how many Bethesda games I own
answer None
Zero fecks given
Honestly this back-and-forth as to whether future Beth games will be on PS consoles has become both annoying and exhausting. Why don't we all just wait and see?
Well, I am always going to have a PlayStation, as I have since PS one. But it appears that the time will soon come to make a decision on whether to bring an Xbox or gaming PC into the fold.
Missing out on StarField or the next ES game would be a very bitter pill for me to swallow.
@Dezzy70 It's possible that Insomniac could have made another Sunset Overdrive for MS, but I'm pretty sure most of their other games were completely funded by Sony and Spiderman was never going anywhere but PS.
I understand MS and why they would be stupid to not make BS game exclusive, but it just seems a bit off for people to celebrate others not getting games they were looking forward to. This comes from someone who fell of BS games hard after Skyrim too.
Honestly, I think Sony's worst move was to start going for timed exclusives. This benefits no one in the end and has put MS in a position where they felt like they needed to make a move like buying BS.
Never been interested in Xbox, but I'll be honest, with Rare, Doublefine and now Bethesda as exclusive 2nd party developers, I'm probably picking one up this generation.
If I'm being really honest though, what I really want is for Microsoft to get the F out of thr console race to make room for Sega to make a proper comeback with new hardware. I know I'm dreaming but so what?
@Old-Red
You are spot on.
Sony played an amazing hand with the PS4, great exclusives. FIFA and COD advertising rights and timed dlc. Also timed third party exclusives.
Microsoft sunk with the Xbox one but were watching and learning.
Now they are using their money and power to play the same game as Sony.
If you can’t beat them (Sony) join them at their own game (Microsoft).
I don't really understand all the fuss. Sure it's disappointing for playstation fans but it has always been like this to a certain degree. If you want to play smash bros you need to buy a nintendo switch, Halo - xbox, God of war, horizon - playstation. I have had to buy an xbox to play xbox games sell it and then buy playstation to play playstation games. Theres always a way to make it work even on a tight budget. I would be happy that a company like xbox bought bethesda instead of google or amazon. Xbox offers budget series s and constant game pass deals. It probably would cost the exact same to buy a series S and load up on gamepass then buying each big bethesda game individually.
@LiamCroft @get2sammyb What has a legacy though then? I can't think of anything like MGS, and there has to be something because of legacy they are looking at bringing on PS. I think new IPs are gone, but anything is up in the air. Why would he say legacy if there are no legacy games? Plus anything from this gen is debatably PS4 associated because just Xbox just got crushed.
@Col_McCafferty
Can’t disagree with your statement.
But this is the world we live in.
There are millions of companies that we think are their own company but they are not they are owned buy big businesses or investors.
When I was in the buying job, I was buying off three different companies for two years then found out they were all owned higher up the food chain my an American investment group.
It is everywhere.
@Jaz007 my guess of a legacy:
Imagine Microsoft somehow went nuclear and aquired Activision-Blizzard. That gives them ownership of Crash Bandicoot.
Crash was a PS exclusive, at least at the start of its life. First 3 entries before the remaster, I think. That would be a perfect example of a game IP legacy being tied to a platform.
At the same time, Tomb Rider might have always been on PlayStation, but it started life as a DOS game, so that might not count as "legacy."
This is all just speculation, since no game in Bethesda's table matches that description, but MS does own some games that do match that for Nintendo: most stuff Rare.
@Col_McCafferty. I know right.and he say single player games dont sell anymore.word up son
I didn’t know Bethesda had a lot of fans and it really sucks to have to buy a new console just for one or two games
Luckily for me I never really care about Bethesda games in this generation they were going downhill IMO
Interesting. You've got Bethesda games heading just to Xbox, PC etc. Then you've got announcements that potentially all Playstation exclusives will eventually come to PC.
microsoft is officially back to the game..good for gamers, sony has to try harder.
@HotGoomba what are you talking about all i said is Phil Spencer’s is a liar and he is. He lied about not wanting to take games away from people and then turned around and did just that. If you can prove he didn’t say that please do. It’s not opinions when its fact.
Oh no I won't be able to get the 10th re-release of Skyrim and games as buggy as an ant colony. Whatever will I do?
"There's communities of players, we love those communities, and we'll continue to invest in them. And even in the future, there might be things that have their contractual things or legacy on different platforms that we'll go do"
Now to me this sounds like all current franchises on playstation such as elder scrolls, fallout, dishonoured, rage, prey, doom, evil within and wolfenstein will still come to playstation as they are existimg communities. But brand new ips such as starfield will be xbox exclusive, so it could be atleast 3 years before we see an xbox exclusive from Bethesda
time for them to make good games now let's see because after Cyberpunk 2077 games like Fallout & Elder will not get the passes they have for so many years. it used to anger me how the gaming press gave them 10/10s when they were broken.
I think Sony will be fine they are at the pinnacle of game making IMO. I do think we will hear they have spent money soon on something.
As long as ESO is still supported I'm happy enough to buy their games on xbox, just dont fancy wasting 4 years of levelling on eso to start again on xbox
I don’t see anyone arguing Xbox now has a better stable of exclusives than Sony, Microsoft just closed the gap by a good measure and got rid of the “no games” argument. Also doesn’t matter if the games are home grown or bought, this happens almost everywhere else in life.
I think there is now a nice balance of exclusives among the big 3 as long as it doesn’t get too much out of sorts like it was with the PS4 domination.
@liamcroft Would a potential sequel to say Deathloop or Ghostwire Tokyo as timed console exclusive be considered as having a PlayStation legacy in a few years time? I suppose one game is not a legacy. It's gonna be interesting to see how this all pans out.
Wish I could paste this as a gif:
https://youtu.be/JQS1m65WUCI?t=36
@LiamCroft I think that might be reading too much into it. I would say a legacy game in the way he talks about it is games that existed previously on both platforms (Doom, Wolfenstein, etc.). I do not think he is saying that he is ripping those off the marketplace for playstation. I also think by his comments he is saying that if they make a new game in a popular series that has fans across platforms, they may make it a cross-platform title. I see his comments as a commitment not to take away titles from current fans, but also committing to releasing exclusive content in the future with their new IPs.
@QueenOfHearts38 I mean the perspective, and let me be nice >, but I'm tired of talking to people on this damn thread, I'll see you tomorrow. Also, you probably shouldn't waste your time debating with an idiot named "HotGoomba".
I want to have a better gaming PC by the time Elder Scrolls 6 comes out for mod support, so I guess I'll be playing future Doom titles on that as well. Now if Microsoft wants to be complete jerks and make them only available on Gamepass, I can finally break the habit of being sucked into Bethesda's broken games.
Sony should just buy square enix to counter this, better games and more frequent titles, but I suppose would cost more than £7.5 billion
@QueenOfHearts38 "He lied about not wanting to take games away from people and then turned around and did just that."
Taking games away from people would be delisting all existing Bethesda games from PlayStation. They have the power to do that, they wont do that. They will even continue to patch and maintain those games, ESO and Fallout 76 will continue to get new content.
Not delivering new entries on a series does not mean "taking games away"
@zebric21 Try harder? You mean actually making new games? They do that, what the f#ck has MS made that is worth a damn in almost a decade?
You all not seeing the bigger picture.
This is not Microsoft having a tiff with you gamers or Sony.
This is Microsoft watching its gaming divisions back. The far bigger picture is Amazon, Google and Apple, any of them could have purchased Bethesda in their possible future plans for mobile and cloud gaming.
This is Microsoft defending and planning its future gaming state and warding of the real big Trillion Dollar companies.
@UltimateOtaku91 "Now to me this sounds like all current franchises on playstation such as elder scrolls, fallout, dishonoured, rage, prey, doom, evil within and wolfenstein will still come to playstation as they are existimg communities."
No one but the most denialist are taking this message to mean that. You can keep thinking that, you will be disapointed the minute they announce ES6 or Wolfenstein 3 and it does not come to PS, but dont try to convince anyone to buy a PlayStation with that in mind.
@Dange I'd expect them to be Xbox/PC exclusive since there wouldn't be a Sony deal in place and they would fall under the "ship where Game Pass exists" comment. Unless Game Pass comes to PlayStation consoles at some point in the future.
@Tharsman MS is obviously taking away games. These games are going to continue to exist on PC and Xbox, just not Sony anymore. MS is trying to buy out studios because they can't actually make anything good on their own. That being said, I don't really give a sh#t. Sony will be fine.
While i already have an Xbox One and GPU, I haven't used them in ages now so I can't see myself subscribing again to play new games when it runs out.
I'd be disappointed not getting to play the games I like on the PS5 (which is where I'd prefer to play on) but there are other great titles out there we can look forward to and enjoy instead. I don't feel that Bethesda games are worth buying a platform for but it's great for people that already do have the platform.
If I really wanted to play something of theirs, I'll subscribe to GP again for a short while but can't see myself bothering with that. Plenty of other good titles to look forward to and don't have the time to play them all.
@UltimateOtaku91 "Sony should just buy square enix to counter this, better games and more frequent titles, but I suppose would cost more than £7.5 billion"
Square Enix current market cap is actually "just" $5.75 billion. Problem there is that it is a publicly traded company, and acquiring such a company is a LOT harder, because you need to convince every single shareholder instead of an owning entity.
Also, parent Sony has not as much cash in hand as parent Microsoft.
Even if either wanted to buy Squre-Enix, it would be basically have to happen as a hostile takeover, and those tend to turn out wrong because the talent might simply leave.
@Coltaine22 maybe sony could not inflate first party game prices or port to PC? maybe they could handle better the demand? lots of things to improve mate..ps now needs a coat of fresh paint too.
To be honest, if Fallout 5 comes along and recaptures the glory of the older entries, then yeah I'll probably buy an Xbox further down the line just to experience it. Same goes for Elder Scrolls. But they'd have to be good.
I don't think this is going to shift many consoles to your average punter in the short term though. This is a long-term move by Microsoft
Companies aren't your friend, etc, etc.
I own a Series X but not a PS5. Plan to get a PS5 down the line when games drop in price like Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man 2 is a real thing, but that's not now. A lot of that is due to where i'm at financially with gamepass vs $70 games, interest wise with most of what I care about right now being multiplat anyway, and where my friends play, I have no dog in the race when it comes to Bethesda basically outside of DOOM and funnily enough...Ghostwire.
Microsoft is going to start being a lot more hardline in trying to compete with Sony, and I doubt Bethesda is the last of Microsoft's moves either so best to just get used to it I guess, I won't hold it against them any more than I hold it against Sony making a deal for something like Final Fantasy, and Sony definitely won't rest on their laurels in acquiring their own big exclusive offerings. Just the nature of the business.
@Tharsman so what did they mean by there's communities they will still invest in on other platforms, all the current Bethesda games have communities on playstation, plus all current contractual obligations have to be honoured and I'm pretty sure elder scrolls 6 will be one of those.....
@zebric21 What does porting PC have anything to do with improving, especially since MS puts all their games on PC. Anyone can improve but the implication is that MS is so improved when all they did is buy a company. Sony actually has made good games from the ground up. Only reason MS games are still 60 usd, is because nobody buys them, they get them threw gamepass and nobody would buy most of their games at 70.
@Sakisa Go to xbox.com then, why is this site infested with Xbots.
@Coltaine22 I highly, and I mean HIGHLY, doubt that they will take away existing cross platform games and remove their listing on the playstation store. I do think you will see new games coming out as exclusives, with the possibility of making a franchise with large cross platform fandom a non-exclusive should they decide it is financially prudent to do so.
@Col_McCafferty I don't pick sides. I'm a gaming fan. Not a PlayStation or Xbox fan
@Coltaine22 I have a PS4 and enjoy it thoroughly still, also play my Switch a lot, and I still like a lot of what Sony offers. I use all 3 of the sites that are connected.
Just giving my 2 cents.
@UltimateOtaku91 It means that Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls online will continue to receive updates. Other recently released games will continue to receive DLC and patches.
Games that don't yet exist don't have playstation players yet.
@Tharsman wow why is Square enix so cheap, with franchises like tomb raider, hitman, dragon quest, final fantasy, kingdom hearts, just cause, deus ex and nier etc
Also here's a tip for everyone that I've recently found and tested and works great.
Get the gamepass app on your phone, buy an hdmi connector for you phone to connect to the tv, connect your dualshock 4 to your phone via Bluetooth, there you go... Gamepass on tv, and saves you hundreds buying a new console or pc to play these games
@Milktastrophe yes but those games they haven't created yet still have communities on playstation or "legacy" as Bethesda worded it.
If the next Scrolls game looks good I'll get an Xbox, no question!
@QualityGeezer sounds like you’re the only one excited to buy their games on Xbox the general audience seems content to rent
@UltimateOtaku91 For the communities, he's talking specificly about already released games. Legacy to me sounds like they may release F76 and ESO on PS5 if they decide to do next-gen versions of the games. I do not read it as sequels will continue to be released outside of xbox.
@TrueAssassin86x yep, own both PS5 and Series X as well. First time invested in an Xbox console for this very reason, all the studios they bought plus game pass.
This news isn't surprising. Did anyone really think they'd pay more than 7 billion dollars for these companies and not make them exclusive to their ecosystem?
Boy this is almost a knockout punch to Sony. Let MS make a few more big acquisitions like this and Sony will be in big trouble.
@Tharsman that is not what he was referring to but you can twist it anyway you want the guys a liar and that is a fact.
@Ken_Kaniff how? they have some of the best studios on the planet they will be just fine.
Other than Wolfenstein, Doom and Evil Within, I don't think there is a single Bethesda title that I have liked, and those three are all just published by Bethesda. Is anyone really going to be kicking themselves over missing a Bethesda game? I could see this move being a big deal ten years ago, but now? I don't think the community is as stocked on them as they used to be.
@UltimateOtaku91 they meant they would continue to support the existing communities on established games like ESO or even that they will not shut down the mod support from Fallout 4.
As for Square Enix, it's the market cap based on stock, and that is based on performance. Square has not been doing well lately, and if anything they been set back by Avengers.
@QueenOfHearts38 that is exactly what he was referring to, and a lot of people have been trying to make those that tried to spin it the way you see it to understand this.
Now you are proven wrong and just decide that he lied and not that you opted to deny the obvious.
Oh boy 😅 it’s ok though all PlayStation owners have high end PC’s right so they won’t miss out. Win win you won’t need to buy an Xbox to play them.
Seriously if Sony would have bought Bethesda it would be similar but the other way around and most of you would be cheering.
@Tharsman how is not letting the next elder scrolls being published on PlayStation not taking a game away from a group of people? You have proved nothing
@QueenOfHearts38 no one can take away from you something that does not exist yet.
@Tharsman lol
@Fenbops I believe you are just being sarcastic, but... you don't need a high-end PC to play most of Bethesda's games.... a decent PC built should be good enough to play them.
I’m excited for whatever ‘move’ Sony makes from this. Even if it’s just kick ass exclusives or it’s own acquisition or, highly unlikely, Game Pass come to PS. Sony knows what it’s doing and losing a few decent games won’t do that.
But I will definitely miss a potential Dishonoured 3. Loved that series!
@rpg2000 and xcoud streaming is coming to windows soon. The weakest pc might be able to run Bethesda games via streaming.
@Ken_Kaniff bigger potential problem is putting all of their games on PC.
As the poor fight the Console Wars. I sit in my ivory tower, enjoying anything and everything across all platforms. Fight you puny ants, fight! Except pc, fcuk pc
This sucks but is expected. You don't shell out $7b just to keep making money on your competitor's platform. With Bethesda, inXile, Obsidian, Ninja Theory, Microsoft has a lot of teams I love. I guess when the next round of games hits I will have to seriously look at Game Pass for PC. Or Sony needs to get Game Pass on PS :/
@Col_McCafferty Your 100% right. Between MS having double the studios now and Sony starting to port there exclusives to PC there won't be a reason to have a Playstation soon. I still haven't bought a PS5 yet and had the opportunity. Because I want to wait and see how this plays out.
I have no interest in Bethesda games aside from DOOM but the silver lining of this move is that it should incentivise Sony to double down on PlayStation exclusives and keep them on their platform, lest they want to see their playerbase erode away to Xbox and PC especially.
I'm still amazed MS spent almost twice as much buying Bethesda etc as Disney did buying Star Wars from George Lucas. Huge money!!!
Well good luck to them, I hope MS gives them time to breathe and not churn out Gamepass filler.
Still think Xbox is generally screwed until they start producing Series X only games, until then they will always be hobbled by design catering for the base Xbox One in their releases.
Final tuppence for what it's worth, will we see an exodus of talent from these studios if the MS work ethic is disagreeable?
The positive effects of a stronger competition by Microsoft are already there: Without today‘s Gamepass, there would be no PS Plus Collection and no monthly PS Plus games like FFVII. I am very happy about the situation. Many competitors with great products, it is the best time to be a gamer!
Fine by me, Bethesda always stood for mediocrity with exceptions that raised slightly above. But I wouldn't mind game pass on PlayStation, but hell would probably freeze over first.
@2cents call me old fashioned but I prefer to own than rent
@Futureshark video game revenue exceeds Film, tv & music industry combined
Not surprising Star Wars is valued lower considering the lackluster presence in gaming
@GamingFan4Lyf It means that the next ones in those series WON'T be on Playstation but they will continue to provide support and DLCs (if any) to the existing games already out on PS4/PS5.
No more DOOM, Fallout, Elder Scrolls (including 6 I guess) etc for playstation.
It's all might and maybe for established franchises. As a business, Microsoft aren't going to cut off sales for an established franchise on another platform if the game isn't going to sell well enough for their subscription platform and on console.
I'll just echo here what I said on PXB about it:
I don't really believe in the Disney+ model of locking exclusives away per platform. I don't see this as a "win" for gamers, but I also don't see GoW only on PS as a "win" for gamers either. But what this does do is make XB (or PC) not a "skippable" console for many gamers anymore, and boosts the competition from the "last place" player considerably. For multi-console fans it's a win as it will strengthen the combination of platforms as a net result. For XB only fans, it's break-even...you didn't gain anything but bragging rights and a strengthened platform. For PS only fans it's a loss, mostly, however, it comes with the up-side that Jim "Matrick" Ryan has been taking you for a ride without a care in the world as a perceived monopoly. With strengthened competition from MS, PS will have to treat PS owners as customers instead of as subjects, at least a little more, than they have been doing. It should benefit PS only players to some degree by forcing PS to work on making PS better, rather than descend down into the Activision/EA/Nintendo pit of delivering bare minimum and rake in the inevitable cash. MS is going to give you everything Bethesda for $10 a month. Sony has a $70 sticker and no Fallout. Your move, Jim.
@2cents "video gaming" includes mobile, however, which is the lions share of that revenue.
Its been a wild ride reading through this comment section, I'm going to need a gallon of water tonight after all the Salt.
blinks after reading the comments section. Sorry to anyone replying to my VR comment i left this comment section hours ago. Been busy playing LittleNightMare 2 on Ps4 and Hitman 3 on Xbox 1.
@Tharsman I'd bet money the next ES is considered a legacy title and is coming to PS5. They'd have to rid of like half the sales for the next ES to not put it on PS. I don't think he thought that far ahead with such a simple quote. I really just think it means there are games which they already think fit the criteria. They also might do timed-exclusives instead of full exclusives for some games.
@TrueAssassin86x The part where Hitman is absolutely phenomenal on VR and I find it hard to play any other way now. It transforms the scale and tourism aspect to something magical and incredibly personal.
@Jaz007 The next TES is years away at best. By then the dust will have settled and everyone will be very familiar with the idea that TES is an Xbox game. Except the people that still think HzD is going to be ported to Switch because someone at Panic Button said they wanted to do that. I think out of anything that one is the most certain to be exclusive. I really doubt they're giving up that much in the way of sales. PS may be the console leader but "Game Pass" is available, literally, on every platform but Playstation and Nintendo. You can play it on Windows, Android, iOS, Xbox.....what percentage of serious TES players are they going to lose, that refuse to play it on any of the above platforms unless it comes specifically to their Playstation? A Series S will cost less than Switch by then. Internet-pending you can stream it to any other device you own, and even use your Dual Sense to do it. I really don't think they're going to be losing a meaningful amount of TES fans, even if they don't convert that many to buying Xbox hardware. They don't actually care about moving the Xbox hardware, they just want to ingest players/engagement time in their ecosystem, on any of it's platforms.
Don't forget that Microsoft want Gamepass on Playstation and Nintendo. They asked Sony once before and Sony turned them down. This will be a play to get Gamepass on Playstation as much as anything else.
Jim Sterling made the best point when he pointed out that Microsoft will do what is best for Microsoft. They could mean keep it exclusive to PC/Xbox/Gamepass but also milking the former until they double-dip and sell it on to other consoles if they feel it will make them money.
Mircosoft are not as fuelled by the dogma of exclusives as everyone on here and will do what works for them best
Definitely will not play TES or Doom if it is NOT only the PlayStation. It seems every major franchise Microsoft touches turns to mold.
And nothing of value was lost.
At least, not from my perspective.
@NEStalgia not to mention they’ve all but confirmed TV streaming Id assume by TES6, they’ll be a TV App as well.
Knew this would happen, ppl are stupid to think it wouldn't
So when MS still ends up worldwide third place are they doing 3rd party and adding gamepass to PS5 and Switch? Cause that’s the logical conclusion.
I think I'll have upgraded my PC by the time the next ES or FO comes out. No need to buy an Xbox just yet.
Sad to hear, but I am happy with my ps5 purchase. I have many a backlog of games to get to from ps4 and Sony studios are no slouch. Although if I wasn't invested in sony and have so many saves and games to play. Game pass and Bethesda acquisition makes xbox very enticing. I'd love to see Sony match game pass with a kind of psplus psnow combo.
@Ken_Kaniff Sony is porting their old games that don't generate much income anymore into a massive player base! Great financial business sense. Also puts the PlayStation brand out there. I should imagine the average console user doesn't want a gaming pc, so this won't effect them. Plus a lot of people won't want to wait 2 years to play the next GOW or HZD2. Yes MS buying Bethesda is a big power move, but it's hardly the end of the world. Just gives Sony even greater competition and will push them harder.
@QueenOfHearts38 They bought zenimax not bethesda and zenimax has put up some great games from arkane studio, machine games...
This was inevitable.
Why buy an entire studio just to let them release titles on your direct competitors?
I'll likely get an xbox series s down the line for $200 as its a great deal for the gamepass games i'd be getting too. Need the sequel to Skyrim.
Competition is good for us gamers.
@Chaotic_Goat Perhaps.
Sucks for PlayStation fans - if that does happen. I have a Series X, so I am not worried about it.
My PS5 is supposed to show up tomorrow.
Besides, like I said, this is an opportunity for Sony to compete.
@NEStalgia I’m not getting subscription for one game. And it being years away could also mean twice as many PS5s. And oh gosh, I hope it doesn’t get scaled to run on the S or not run bad on it, but it might. Dang, the Series S might be the worst part about this larger.
And I’m always going to play ES on PC with mods, so this doesn’t really affect me in terms of getting it or available. Now if we’re talking Doom or another game I want on console, maybe, but not ES. I honey think we’re getting a few existing popular series on PS still. Mine craft never went exclusive even though it didn’t have to be on PS4. Same idea here I think. RIP Starfield on PS5 though.
Seems fair, honestly
@Serialsid Yea but by them doing this the only incentive to buy a Playstation is to play there two big exclusives each year at launch. Jim Ryan already said that many more games will be ported. Thats means this will be a regular thing. It just really waters down the depth of there brand. The other thing you have to realize now is that MS has double the studios Sony does and there going to continue to buy more. They were going to buy Gearbox, but Embracer Group beat them to that, so there far from done.Sony has made one acquisition in the span of MS buying up 16 studios. It might not look like a big deal right now, but if MS continues to buy and Sony cant keep up with the level of exclusives that MS will put out. Then there in trouble in the long run.
Big deal. ES is mostly online now, and really it’s just been too long for me to care. Limit your audience? Classic dick move.
You need both consoles this generation to play the most anticipated games
@Ken_Kaniff I know a lot of gamers that just want a box under the TV, they have no interest in having a PC and all that comes with that. Consoles sell because they are simple. You really think Sony didn't look into it and decide it wouldn't hurt the brand? I don't care if some PC gamer is playing a game I beat 2 years ago that's on psplus now. And yes it could be bad for the industry as a whole if MS keep buying game developers, but they have a massive bank account to do that, Sony do not. The worst thing Sony could do right now is try and buy lots of studios and look like they are panicking. They have a great machine and massive Ip's with a proven track record. MS have still got to show what they can do with all these studios(and I say this as an xbox owner). Competition is going to get fierce, but I'd rather have Sony's studios with the games they're put out these last few years than Microsofts.
Let's see how hard Bethesda work now they don't have to worry about people getting their games full price.
@Ken_Kaniff oh and microsoft had to buy these studios because they were so far behind. Last gen until gamepass it was a disaster for them. I hope they don't buy too many more because one company owning all the best studios would be bad for all us gamers.
The exclusive stuff was a given, I'm more interested in how they reorganise ip work. Imagine ID working on halo, or the fallout franchise goes to obsidian (or at least having their narrative input)? It's whether ms just let bethesda be bethesda or how in time, they assume more control of their output
@BearsAndBattles Putting game pass on Switch and PS is the goal even if xbox somehow came out first. How has no one figured this out yet?.
"where game pass is" is what it means.
They will sell xbox hardware, but that's not their main product. The xbox brand as a service, is. They are trying to build xbox up to be the gaming equivalent to Windows.
Across mobiles, tablets, pcs, and consoles, MS want xbox to be the go to service, and game pass will be their main delivery method to bypass the built in stores of those devices, and be the source of a consistent income regardless of output for that period.
People here are too busy looking at things through their console wars goggles to actually look at what the companies are doing.
@Serialsid I get what your saying, but I think Sony allowing you to play there exclusives on anything but a console is dangerous. And I say this because of what MS is doing. Im a Playstation fan, and I hate what MS is doing because its going to work. There going to keep buying studios and eventually own the majority of the 3rd party market because they know Sony cant compete with that. It makes me sad to think one day its probably going to come down to either sticking with Playstation for there few exclusives they put out a year, or wait a few years till they port them to PC and play everything else on GamePass because MS owns the majority of the market.
@deathaxe See above.
MS don't see 'xbox' as the console, they see xbox as the service that delivers those games, and powers the services and communities behind them.
Think of Minecraft on Switch. If you sign in with your xbox account, you can cross play and earn achievements, without ever touching an xbox console.
@Dezzy70 Except Insomniac's portfolio is based mostly around IP's that Sony owned, so they didn't take much away compared to what MS took in Bethesda, such as a large handful of developing studios along the way. Sony never has went to that degree in acquisitions so it's not the same. Naughty Dog didn't really have properties that were a big loss at the time they were acquired back in the early 2000's. In other words, most studios that Sony bought were up and coming studios that didn't have much ground covered in the industry until Sony groomed them into what they are now. MS on the other hand, seems more interested in taking the easy way out and snatch anything for a quick buck. That's my opinion on the whole thing. In all honesty though, it doesn't affect me personally because I rarely ever bought a Bethesda published game, so it's not a loss to me, but I can see why those who did, aren't too pleased. Time will tell if this move between MS and Bethesda will work out for them.
@Ken_Kaniff we can only hope that at some point regulators will step in and stop MS getting a monopoly. Will also be interesting to see the quality of the games they put out, as to keep gamepass attractive they need to keep putting new games on constantly. Quantity over quality wouldn't be good. I know this deal takes away some potentially great games from PS, but I don't think it's the end of the world. Now if they bought ea and took all the sports titles away, or Activision and made COD exclusive then that would be a game changer.
The most definitive vague statements yet, Can we stop talking about Bethesda now.
@deathaxe No. He's using the terms based on his knowledge of the direction of the xbox division.
You're too busy ranting against xbox (with stories completely unrelated to this story) to actually look at what's going on. And you're thinking in a limited mindset.
Your pc isn't an xbox console, but if you boot up an MS game on it, you're playing on xbox. You connect to the xbox servers and services. You end up in the xbox ecosystem. You are playing on xbox.
This is how they view xbox, and this is why he talks how he does. He's not lying, you are just failing to understand how he views the xbox platform.
@Ken_Kaniff Yeah, and Sony has been so short sighted, or Ryan specifically, in focusing only on top budget games and sidelining it flat closing down the smaller budget niche studios that made PlayStation what it was. They can't outspend MS on "AAA", but arrogance got the best of them. Shaun Layden said years ago they needed more smaller budget games at lower price points. He was right. But Jim pushed him out and doubled down on Hollywoodization. Throwing around their weight was a good look until a heavier fighter got in the ring, and they forgot their technique. This hopefully will make Sony reconsider their proposition as well.
@Jaz007 Maybe you won't buy another console or buy a subscription "just for one game", but lots and lots of people do and will. How many people right on this forum pay monthly subscriptions just to play FFXIV? And unlike XIV that GP sub grants access to many games so it's more like PS Now (which is only not a joke because of Sony reacting to competition from Game Pass...i remember how dismal it was prior...)
But all that's the point. Bethesda games are PC games first and foremost and always have been. Between PC players, willing streaming subscribers on any device, and Xbox owners, how many TES fans really won't have accessibility to play the game? The percentage of people that are interested in Bethesda games that refuse to play on anything but a PlayStation are probably a single digit percentage of the game's audience. Yeah, if that's your best device and you'd really rather play it there, it sucks, but virtually nobody is actually blocked out of getting to play it on a thing they own. It's not like Nintendo bought them, lol.
Doom, yeah... That one is more in the air I think, if only because it's probably the worst case for streaming a game. But that's also a big name to associate with MS, so I wouldn't be surprised either way.
If it was on hardware consoles only, it would severely hurt sales, definitely. But given the number of platforms and payment models available, i can't imagine not being on PS will really harm sales meaningfully.
@LiamCroft my son did! Honestly it played just fine to me. shrug
@deathaxe “you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain”
This article generates more clicks than PS5 stock page... That’s wild!
Just makes me want to beef up my PC and if a game releases that I feel I really need to play, I have no problem subscribing to Gamepass for a month to play it.
@Jaz007 I decided to watch the video myself, and the usage of "legacy" is definitively not what has been hypothesized here. It's definitely just about legacy software that needs maintenance and legacy contracts that need honoring on a given platform.
@deathaxe GamePass had 15 million users 9/2020.
1/2021 it was up to 18 million.
They anounce numbers on their quarterly reports. We likely will see an update sometime next month.
@NEStalgia A single digit are PS Players? I'm fairly certain Skyrim sold more on PS4 than Xbox One. So unless 90% of ES players are on PC, then I highly doubt that. I would imagine at least 30-40% are on PS at this point.
I wonder if Sony will just outright buy companies like Square Enix in the future. Maybe Capcom? What the fanboys fail to realize is that this ultimately hurts the consumer over anything else.
Spency says he's all about the gamers and yet turns around and takes away options from said gamers. Only liars get to the top it always seems.
@Old-Red That’s literally what PS did with Spiderman and Final Fantasy. I love me some PlayStation IPs, but I most certainly don’t feel sorry for Sony over this. MS doesn’t have the leverage Sony has because of their smaller market share. They have to pay MUCH more for exclusives because of a smaller user base. We know building up IPs from scratch can take decades. Game Pass would be long dead by then. I think this is a brilliant move on MS’s part.
I'm going to try to be as clear as I can because that's what I, I just think it's fair. Any game not on Playstation does not exist! There is no reason to even think about it.
@Jaz007 I don't mean the percentage of players that played it on ps4. I mean the percentage of players lost because they play it on PlayStation and refuse to play it on any of the 4 other platforms they could play it on. Most people that want to play can and will play, by buying an sx, a cheap ss, a few months of streaming, or pc.
There's a small amount of potential sales lost but not close to the amount that otherwise would have played on ps.
Sony's $100m+ games could reach a larger audience going multiplat, but they don't (well, now they do with PC) because they're worth more than raw return in platform growth. same for TES.
I still don't love the whole idea of exclusives on general. But I get it.
"I'm going to try to be as clear as I can..."
Proceeds to smear mud all over the window.
It is what it is. I still prefer the Sony IPs, and the studios tend to release better quality games.
I never played a Fallout game before 4, but enjoyed it a lot, despite its frustrating quirks. Probably the only IP in the Zenimax library I'll miss.
I own two versions of Skyrim (PS3 and PSVR), but haven't played either past getting to town after the opening dragon attack. Couldn't get into it.
I own three Wolfenstiens. I played one for about an hour. Haven't played it since.
The Evil Within? Own them both. Never played either.
I think I have Rage, but can't be sure...and don't care to check.
I remember playing Doom OG in college and liked the FPS aspect, but migrated to Half-Life once it released (along with the TF and CS mods). I do own the Doom reboot and Doom VFR, but have put maybe 30 minutes into each.
Outside of Fallout 4, the only other Zenimax game I put any time into was Oblivion. That is until I had completed the holy armor questline (DLC?) and then "stole" a loaf of bread at a bar by mistake and had it stripped from me. So pissed I never played it again.
I'm not saying that there aren't some good games in there, and this isn't isolated to Zenimax games. Dying Light? Own it. Never played. Metro series? Own three. Never played. Saints Row? Far Cry? Just Cause? I think I have 4 or 5 Assassins Creed games in my queue. I could literally never buy another game again and have enough backlog to last me the rest of my days.
But that's the thing. The games I do finish are typically Sony's games. There's a reason for that. And thanks to Microsoft's Zenimax purchase, I can save some money to buy all of them!
I have been quite glued to the screen reading everyone's comments and i have to say I love that passion that has been shown from both sides. Say what you will about console wars and fanboyism, but one can clearly see that there is an inner fanboy in all of us, whether you would like to admit it or not. We all have a preference in which one of these two companies we want to see succeed and it is that passion that you have for said company, whichever it may be, that drives these companies to compete for your money and time. It has been quite entertaining and enlightening reading these comments because you can clearly see which person sides with whom.
Congratulations to Microsoft for the successful acquisition. They are providing their loyal fan base with content that will make them happy to be a supporter of Microsoft. It is now up to Sony to determine what logical step is required to not only combat the opposition, but keep their own loyal fan base happy.
Granted they do not have to do much because of how well they have done for the past seven years and how well they still doing. Whether you want to admit it or not Sony, with the PlayStation brand, is the mecca of gaming, have been for the past two decades but it would not hurt for them to do something huge to keep driving this point across to the masses. Not sure if an acquisition as ambitious as this one is imminent or needed, but I will look on with tremendous interest.
@lacerz "Outside of Fallout 4, the only other Zenimax game I put any time into was Oblivion. That is until I had completed the holy armor questline (DLC?) and then "stole" a loaf of bread at a bar by mistake and had it stripped from me. So pissed I never played it again."

Your stuff was in the evidence chest. You just needed to retrieve it.
Or load up a previous save.
@Eadgar
Hi. I just read the last couple comments and disagree haha
'there is an inner fanboy in all of us'
I'm sorry but I left the 'boy' part in me when I was 17. I would never call people I don't know anything about 'fanboy'. Also you may or may not have noticed often people calling others fanboy are just projecting their own bias and behavior. It's a childish conversation that usually follows and simply kill any intelligent discussion. You could as well compare it to old IGN type of childish bickering ending every reply with 'kid'.
Having a platform you love playing on is great. Whatever the platform there is no need to belittle being fan oland loving gaming on one platform. Love > hate.
I nearly believe 'fanboy' calling was created by fanatics to shut down any discussion haha
Edit
I know you meant well. I'm not trying to criticise. Just disagree and trying to explain why. I'm straightforward typing on my phone and sometimes people get my tone wrong, even pushsquare staff.
@lacerz "I own two versions of Skyrim (PS3 and PSVR), but haven't played either past getting to town after the opening dragon attack. Couldn't get into it."
I can relate to the skyrim part. Im a huge, huge TES fan. Going back to Daggerfall on DOS, Morrowind, loved it. Oblivion loved it, the only game other than Jade Empire i bought PC parts just to max the sliders.
Skyrim, I bought the limited edition with the huge dragon sculpture for 360. That dragon is waay bigger than I expected.... I played up to white run, got the horse, clipped through the floor brush. Found all my saves had the same problem. Never touched it again. I bought it again on switch. Didn't play far. Bought it again on x1x hd remaster. Got about as far as you did. Bought it again on psvr. I enjoyed that a bit but psvr itself it's a pain to set up with the camera... Maybe it'll work on psvr2.
I played tes online for like 2 months straight and was as hooked as oblivion and i don't even like mmos.
Something about skyrim specifically lacks some of the TES magic. Yet that's the popular one...
@QueenOfHearts38 lol, Just go get an Xbox or a PC. Besides, if this was Sony buying those studios, you would be celebrating. Sony has exclusives and now so does Microsoft.
@Salt_AU Still heroically not admitting defeat I see!
Platform holders don't make money from selling their own games. Sony is quite happy for it's studios to operate at a loss if they produce great games. Platform holders make money from the 30% commission they get on every game sold on their platform by other publishers.
Therefore, if having some of the most popular games in the world makes even 1% more people buy an Xbox, Microsoft will make money on every game that person buys on an Xbox for the course of it's life - that could be 20+ games. Making money from 20 games is a lot more valuable than making money off their own exclusives.
Even more than that, Microsoft are trying to be the Netflix of games. And they see that as a market which could be worth hundreds of billions of dollars in the long-run. Microsoft bought Bethesda for what is pocket change to Microsoft - they could throw away $10 billion every 3 months and it wouldn't scratch Microsofts accounting book - as an investment towards to that goal of being the Netflix of games.
Now you might not think this makes sense, but this is what I told you earlier this week when I said Microsoft would make their games exclusive, and it turns out they have.
This is the economics. The money isn't in being the guy who sells games, it's being the guy who makes money from everyone else selling games on their platform.
@lacerz lol Why are you buying games that you seem to not play or finish? Buy a game, play it, finish it and then buy a new game.
Have to say I'm gutted about that, not surprised at all, I mean, why spend all that money to still allow you competitors to market the games. I'm really keen on the fallout and Elder Scrolls series but can't justify buying a 2nd console just for a couple games sadly. Oh well. Perhaps Sony can fill the void and develop similar games for Ps5...
Oh well, i will be getting a series X then. But only when the new games come out, which will be years yet i think.
I love the Elder Scrolls series the best, Fallout is good aswell, and Starfield will not be exclusive as im sure there is a contractual agreement already in place on that one for it to go to Playstation aswell.
The rest of Bethesda games dont interest me much.
Im sure Sony will now get a couple of developers to concentrate on making those RPG style games, as that is where
they will be lacking a bit.
@kingv84 Microsoft has always had exclusives, its just a Sony fanboy narrative that they haven’t. Now you can question the quality of exclusives but they’ve always been there.
@deathaxe I think the Xbox Live Gold price hike announcement back in January is enough evidence that Microsoft is unhappy with Game Pass growth as the only purpose of doubling the price of Gold would be to force people onto Game Pass.
Also as we can see from Mixer, not enough growth leads to Microsoft shutting down services so if stuff like the July Xbox event games, Bethesda, etc. barely moves the mark on Game Pass growth Microsoft will probably shut it down.
People keep saying that "Sony has done this in the past. If they bought Bethesda you would celebrate" and I'm genuinely curious if anyone can name some examples? And I'm not talking timed exclusivity deals, or buying up a 3rd party studio that was already making exclusives for them anyways.
I'm talking about a situation in which a big 3rd party, that has been releasing games for both consoles for a long while now and has built up dedicated fanbases for each platform, was snatched up by Sony. Something of the same caliber as Microsoft acquiring a huge studio like Bethesda. To my knowledge it hasn't happened, so people claiming that "When Sony does it you celebrate" just doesn't make sense to me. It's not a good example.
It was coming and fair enough, you pay £7 billion for a studio then you can do what you want I am just gutted I wont get to play the last instalment of Wolfenstein on PS5.
Couldn't care less. No love for Bethesda games anyway. Bit disappointed that I now won't be able to see if the Indiana Jones game is good (and if it is, even more disappointed I won't get to play it) but other than that I don't care. Wolfenstein is OK I guess, not into Doom, Fallout or Dishonored etc anyway though.
As someone mentioned earlier, this proves the completely different approaches taken by Sony and Microsoft. Sony is interested in selling machines and locking people into that platform's ecosystem. Microsoft is not interested in how many machines they sell and want their ecosystem spread across as many different platforms as possible.
@InsertUsername
It’s a bigger picture than just Sony.
It’s more about the future and the other big Trillion Dollar companies. Apple, Amazon and Google etc.
They all could have purchased Bethesda for their own gaming requirements.
As for Sony yes they are direct competition in the gaming market now. But the bigger picture is the future.
@DragonSlayer1759 - There is zero chance of seeing Starfield on Sony systems. It's well known that Sony were trying to moneyhat Starfield exclusivity when the Zenimax takeover was revealed. If MS will make any game exclusive to Xbox, it's Starfield.
Think we all knew deep down this is what would happen.
If Sony bought them, would they release the games outside of PS4/5? Nope.
Thankfully I own both next gen systems, so I can still play these titles.
One positive though is that Sony will now have to up their game, so we as gamers will benefit.
PS Now is a sleeping giant just waiting for Sony to fully commit to it.
@NEStalgia Yep. Same here. Didn't enjoy Skyrim as much as the other game.
Skyrim is the popular one only cause it had a bigger marketing push, and came at the height of the PS3/360 era.
Eeh, Japanese rpg >> Western rpg , so fortunately this does not effect me.
This still going on....
When it comes to Bethesda open world rpg games they are best played on pc where the community can mod them and fix all the bugs. Yes I know consoles get mods now but it is still far better on PC
@tomassi lol just lol.. How many times you going to say you don't care? We all believe you
Why the hell are y'all still doing this.
@TrueAssassin86x Honestly I have to agree with u
@NEStalgia Absolutely the same here. Played Oblivion to death, still rock up on ESO now and again (still hurt by the Bosmer nerf!) and yet Skyrim, just couldn't be bothered with, despite having it on PS3 and later PS4.
Same with Fallout 3 (loved it) and Fallout 4 (meh)
Can anyone here help me with a PC build? I'm looking at a budget under 1200 USD for all of It. I hate subscriptions so if there is an option to buy elder scrolls or fallout on Steam I'd much more prefer that. I have an aging gaming laptop, and it can't do more than 1080 without heating up now adays.
@sanderson72 New Vegas is fantastic. Now that Microsoft owns both I hope they hand the fallout franchise to Obsidian. They'd make better games.
@StylesT I said 'i don't care' twice I think. Should I LIKE Bethesda games then? Nothing there of interest to me, sorry. I won't even notice they've gone because I simply don't play those types of games.
@Floki I think the environment had something to do with it feeling a little flat. Morrowind was a fantastical place of giant mushrooms in an endless desert with a strange civilization with a rich history that compelled investigating all you could find on it. Oblivion was a traditional, beautiful medieval fantasy setting with a lot of fantastical elements in it and the world itself was just pleasant to explore the different landscapes of the region. Skyrim is just Steep with swords It's a bunch of vikings in a snow capped mountain.....it's just a lot less compelling and intriguing than the Dwemer culture and landscape, or the Imperial majesty and grandeur.
FWIW, I generally hate MMOs, but I ended up loving TES:O. It's loaded with single player content that feels like a proper TES game, but with MMO dungeons where other people run past you while you play, and though I've only played through the Summerset campaign fully it had so much more of the feeling of Oblivion that addicted me than anything in Skyrim. Where Skyrim made me feel like "maybe I don't love TES anymore?" TES:O reminded me "Yep, I do." The only reason I haven't picked it up again is I'm waiting for the XSX (and maybe PS5?) upgrade.
@Grumblevolcano I don't think they'd shut down game pass so casually after investing such a huge amount of not just marketing, but brand identity and strategy into it. Mixer was a side thing. It wasn't a major investment. It would be more comparable to Zune, but they didn't tie their entire brand identity into Zune, and Zune didn't have 18 million recurring payment customers....
@sanderson72 When it comes to Fallout, I'm the grumpy old rocking chair guy. I have a hard time enjoying Bethesda's take on Fallout. I was a huge fan of 1 & 2, but when Bethesda got it, they lost the entire feeling of what Fallout was actually about. The whole thing was a subversive satire on humanity, not an apocalyptic survival game. Bethesda has played it mostly straight as survival apocalypse except for New Vegas, and New Vegas was made by Obsidian who's mostly the people who made the original games.
Though I'm hopeful for Fallout 5 because of the MS buyout. For the first time since Interplay/Black Isle went down, with inExile, Obsidian, MS now has all the key people behind the original Fallouts on deck short of Chris Taylor (Tim Cain, Feargus Uquhart, and Brian Fargo are the trinity that matter here), and with Bethesda, the actual Fallout license and a team capable of large games. Even if it's a Bethesda feeling take on it, they'd be wholly remiss not having Tim Cain chime in. And Brian Fargo sued the remnants of Interplay just to try to get the Fallout license back (or get his former employees paid) - that's what compelled the IP sale to Bethesda to begin with (but it did get his former employees paid.)
Until now, the people who know Fallout haven't had access to the license. And the people who have the license don't know Fallout. Now they're all part of the same company again. So this could be the best thing for long-time Fallout fans (I'm hoping, and hoping to wash the odor of 76 off the series...)
TES6 I think will be more interesting for the sole purpose of being set in any other kingdom with any other civilization. The Nords are the least exciting race of the entire TES mythology, living in the least interesting landscape.
@Tharsman Hey, nice post! I had a question if you don't mind answering since I'm not knowledgable on this subject. So if MS/Sony/etc wanted to buy SE /Ubi etc. and the shareholders don't want to sell it would have to be a hostile takeover, like Vivendi's failed takeover of Ubi in 2015-2018, right?
I was wondering what if it's a more Disney/Fox type of deal, that is shareholders agreeing to sell via a friendly takeover?
@Isak That can happen. In the current environment, though, everyone is seeing gaming as a cant-fail recession-proof investment, so it is, generally speaking, unlikely that shareholders will agree to a sale, since they might only see things going up.
Square Enix in particular had a bad month, but that's not enough to scare all shareholders. It would take quite a while going down, or a very drastic drop, for shareholders to be scared enough to agree to a sale of that type.
A hostile takeover is "always an option" but Ubisoft tossed some poison pill clauses on their employee contracts that would make a hostile takeover a very risky business. I dont know the details of this particular poison pill, and too lazy to look them up to see if they are public, but imagine if all contracts said "in the case of a hostile takeover, you can quit and walk away with an unconditional severance package of $100k and a huge pension."
I am not sure if SE has such a clause, but even if they didn't, I doubt Microsoft would be interested on such an approach. You just dont get a lot of good will from the employees or their consumer base with those approaches.
I am not sure how Fox was doing at the time of the sale, but given what has happened to the movie industry this last year, I am sure the shareholders are extremely happy they managed to close that deal before any of this pandemic stuff hit the fan.
Same pandemic, though, as I mentioned above, has done the opposite to many gaming investments. To the point I am a bit curious why Bethesda opted to be acquired by Microsoft than just going public. Maybe it was just top management really getting along, or agreeing with MS vision, or maybe their books didn't look good enough to go public or survive much longer on their own.
Another option is always for a company to sell off some of their assets. The WB Games sale, for instance, would had been AT&T selling off a small section of their business.
A big hypothetical example: Square could decide that Crystal Dynamics has failed them and decide to sell off that studio, along with some of their IP (note this is ridiculously unlikely but this is an example.) Shareholders are a bit more likely to part with unprofitable business segments like that, but IPs cost nothing to keep in hand and always have potential (again, likely why WB Games sale didn't work, even Mortal Kombat IP is rumored to not had been on the table, outside licensing it.)
@kingv84
I have a problem.
@Tharsman Such an insightful read! Thanks for clarifying in so clear terms.
Yeah I'd say acquisition of publicly traded companies sounds very unlikely with all that context in mind. Also good on Ubi for taking that precaution, entirely possible other publicly traded gaming companies may have added something similar in their clause to prevent hostile takeovers.
I also agree with the Bethesda stuff, Spencer said in an interview they were looking to sell so it makes sense.
Thanks for taking the time to provide such a thorough explanation!
I've never played a Bethesda game before, but do own most of their single player titles.
Shame to hear about this but not surprised either...hopefully their hold on Bethesda will eventually expire, or they will open up to sharing their exclusives with other platforms.
HA! I knew they were gonna bait and switch. They sugar coated it on the announcement to prevent backlash.
Well... good thing Fallout and The elder scrolls were not getting better with each release.
Don't fall for the trap. Ignore these games. If you buy game pass, they will bait and switch you. That is the strategy. They are pretending to give you a good deal and they will later increase prices and have more micro-transactions. Don't fall for it. Last time we did, we ended up with micro transactions and online paywall.
@TheFrenchiestFry I gather gamepass is losing money.
