Update: Since the publication of this article, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut has taken a small patch that fixes many of the frame rate issues detailed below. Following a quick bit of testing, we have found there to still be dips here and there, but they're not nearly as egregious following the update. However, the fix does not address the clunky interaction prompts as well as the minor bugs and glitches.
The original text follows.
Original article: It was stated that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut would support 60 frames-per-second on PlayStation 5. However, that is absolutely not the case at launch. The much anticipated isometric RPG has launched on Sony platforms with a number of minor issues, all of which add up to make a fairly unsatisfying experience. It's frustrating because we can see some of the charm and quality seeping through the cracks that its PC userbase has talked up for the past year, to the point where we think what developer ZA/UM has in its hands will eventually be considered one of the PS5's best in its early years. But we're not playing that game on day one. What we are playing feels like a buggy and unresponsive chore.
It's the frame rate that really gets under our skin. The target of 60fps may be reached when you leave the game to idle, but then you're not going to make any progress whatsoever. Serious chugging is a common occurrence whenever you transition between environments and simply navigating the outdoors can lead to frame rate drops all too often. It ruins the sense of exploration for us since we're fighting to keep the game in check technical wise just as much as we are conversing with the town locals. Some may be able to put up with it, but we didn't expect Disco Elysium: The Final Cut to run like a slideshow. It leaves a disappointing first impression that is only extrapolated by poor interaction prompts.
The game uses the right thumbstick on the PS5 DualSense controller to highlight objects within every environment you can interact with. You then need to confirm that interaction by pressing X, except main character Harry only seems to follow your orders roughly half the time. It's a very fiddly system where you need to line your character up perfectly with where the game wants you to stand in order to trigger the prompt. If you are stood slightly to the side, the interaction won't take place. In just a few hours of playtime, we very regularly found ourselves needlessly adjusting positions to fit what the title demands. It's a tedious action that doesn't lend itself particularly well to a controller.
And then there's the odd glitch here and there that pulls control away from you. One example would be where we simply lost the ability to select a dialogue option for a couple of minutes. Every other menu in the game could be accessed and even scrolled through, but return to the actual game and no dice. We then suddenly regained control and were allowed to progress — we had pressed every button on the controller multiple times by this point so we're not sure what triggered this bug or how it was resolved.
As alluded to earlier, however, the entire situation is annoying because we can see glimpses of what those who played the base game on PC have been chatting about in the time since launch. Top-notch writing keeps discussions engaging and the breadth of dialogue options placed at your fingertips really is quite something. It puts the typical RPGs you've come to know on consoles to absolute shame. The narrative itself hasn't quite grabbed us just yet, but then we are only a few hours in. Should it pick up in our next play session, we'll start to see why the game is rated so highly for its story.
It's a little heartbreaking to see Disco Elysium: The Final Cut launch in such a state on PS5. There's something special here and we're eager to do the work and uncover it, but we'll have to do so with a very poor frame rate, silly interaction prompts, and a small handful of bugs. There's an excellent game here, somewhere — it just isn't that at launch.

Doesn't bode well for the switch port 🙈
Well that’s rubbish, I’ve already double dipped 😂
not buying it for sure without any reviews for consoles. I havent seen any!? lesson learned from CP2077. Thanks CDPR
Typical port from pc. No surprises.
@djape As far as I'm aware, everyone got PS5 codes earlier today at the same time as me. Reviews won't be for a while, including my own.
Why do games get launched like this? It can only turn people off of a franchise longer term.
How do developers regularly seem to get so little performance out of consoles regardless of how powerful they are?
Massively disappointing, there's no real excuse for this kind of technical performance on PS5.
I was literally seconds away from buying Disco Elysium on PS5 when Liam told me about the frame rate. Saved me £26, but it's still such a shame.
Hopefully a fix is imminent.
wow...was going to buy later on or tomorrow. will put it back on the wishlist and buy for half price later in the year now instead.
thanks for the heads-up pushsquare.
Do developers not have the role "Games Tester" anymore?
How do so many games release without proper testing these days?
Already bought and downloaded. 😂 Getting sick of such unfinished games being released and devs/publishers taking our support for granted. Hopefully it will be patched soon, but it's not really acceptable.
@LiamCroft
So they release code late so reviews can’t get out then discount at launch to encourage lots of sales before the news spreads. Nice!
@Signosis Believe it or not, issues like this are generally found and reported during the testing phase. However, developers aren't obligated to fix them. Sometimes this is because developers don't have time, and the fixes are postponed and included in post-launch support (see Cyberpunk).
In short, stuff like this is rarely the fault of testers. The testers are probably doing their job — but their job isn't to fix the issues that they find.
Another game i can leave alone.
Thanks. Almost purchased this AM, but then I thought no reviews..hmmm. Are they holding back review codes to the day of release? It would seem.
Oh wow, sounds pretty bad
Buy darkest dungeon instead👍.the best indie games ever.word up son
@carlos82 My buddy owns a beast of a computer. He spent multiple thousands of dollars. He show me multiple games and was, look at these frames, look at this resolution with these frames, etc.
There were many games that hit 120+ frames at 2k and 4K.
At that time, this was a few years ago, he said that he is having trouble with Resident Evil 2. He showed it to me and it struggled to stay at 60fps. I messed with his settings, turned off and turned down some settings. I think we got it to a 2k at 60.
He told me, man, my computer is just not good enough. I scoffed. I said if your computer is not good enough, then 98% of computer owners out there don’t have a chance.
I told him, this game is not optimized well. It’s not your computer.
That showed me that regardless of the horsepower offered by technology, it doesn’t matter if the devs can’t or won’t optimize it. We are to a point where these companies are trying to cater to too many platforms. They make these games “work”, but that’s it. They release them and then try to optimize them.
@frankmcma haha yeah that's often a red flag and your delay in purchasing appears prudent!
This sucks man..........you could opt for a last-gen version but it offers a lesser experience....so i dunno Guys ....Guys........was it summit I said 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Welp put this under the over hyped game list along with Cyberpunk 2077.... NEVER BELIEVE THE HYPE.
@LiamCroft Take your time......."Serious chugging" oh boy the longer it takes you to Review it they might of patched it up and alls well.
@TrueAssassin86x Well no, it’s already out on PC for a year and a half and is incredible. It’s not overhyped, the port’s just not up to scratch.
Maybe don't buy it all, ever, is more accurate. 🤔
@ShogunRok I see, thank you.
Long gone are the days when a game released in finished form (for better or worse), it feels like a lot of games are released that require patching recently.
@Arugula Same! I have spent the whole PS4 generation waiting patiently for sales, and for the games I want to be complete and functional. I have never regretted that move even once, and never felt like missing out. Even spoilers are easily avoidable if you're just a bit careful.
Of course, I play mainly single player games, so I don't care at all about community or live events...
I'm used to these types of games having performance issues, I'll just wait then and pick it up later
@mookysam You're right, it's not acceptable... but then, why do you still buy games at launch?
Speak with your money and wait for a deep sale when the game will be finished, if publishers see the sales during launch week go down, they'll react at one point.
Yuk...just watched a bit of a 4K YouTube PS5 'let's play' and my God is it stuttery and janky! Not Cyberpunk launch levels, but on the way there. Seeing that has totally killed my desire to play it for a while, which is definitely a good thing with the state it's in right now.
Played it a couple of hours. Controls are pretty cumbersome, I’ll admit that. But complaining about less than 60 fps in a crpg like this, with slow animations and dodgy inputs seems like a stretch for me. 🤷♂️
@Signosis Yeah it's really disappointing to see games like this release in such a state. We can only hope that companies slowly start to realise that launching shoddy games can have a severe impact on future projects. It's very hard to regain trust once it's gone!
@LiamCroft Can confirm, I also got my own review copy around 7pm today. Had yet to start, but this is definitely concerning.
Sooo Reddit tells me there was already a patch a couple hours after launch that fixed a lot of this.
I think late review codes are beginning to be a bit of a red flag for games launching in a poor state? I get spoilers etc but this game has been available a long time on pc already therfore any spoilers will be well out in the wild?
I'm in Australia so I will definitely hold off on buying this for my PS5.
please take a moment and appreciate what naughty dog is doing..flawless.
Bit of a warning sign that it wasn't available to purchase until earlier today and they were very late in confirmingthe release date. Did think that was a bit odd that you couldn't eve pre-order it. Which probably saved some people a bit of dollar.
Just nearly had a heart attack by trying to grab a tie off the ceiling fan.
Late review codes or embargoes ALWAYS signs disaster. As same as "day one" patches.
If at car store I buy vehicle, it arrives and my retailer say "Ohh, wait a minute, here is your steering wheel screw and here are brake blocks. You have to attach them when you arrive home." that would be a huge disaster for manufacturer and no one would buy its car anymore. So why is it possible in gaming industry? Are developers so lazy to care, or are gamers (customers) so stupid to let it allow? It all should be sue-able. They are selling "entertainment" but I'm not entertained, I'm frustrated, so it is false promise and therefore it is betrayal.
I know I sound like Karen, but it is logical. A few "scare cases" and they should start act as humble traders, not as drug dealers...
Bought it this morning and have put in about 3 hours so far on a base ps4, and have had no stuttering whatsoever. This game is not a graphical masterpiece, and seriously doubt you'd notice much difference between the 4 and 5. It can be finicky about where you have to stand to execute prompts. Not a big deal, though. The dialogue is great. It's a slow paced game so far, I'd call it a comedic graphic novel/old school rpg. I'm having a great time with it so far.
@LiamCroft
Reddit says patch 1.01 has already dropped which fixes the stuttering, frame drops and input lag.
Apparently the secret to the X button is you have to hold it down rather then click, although the game doesn't tell you.
Might well buy tomorrow after hearing post patch results on pushsquare, the world wide web greatest website!
@zebric21 Absolutely, Rockstar as well. Ghost of Tsushima runs pretty flawlessly, as did God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4. Spotting a trend (apart from Rockstar of course)?
Only exception from a Sony Studio was Days Gone but I played it last year and whilst it had s few bugs nothing like some of the problems encountered with other titles. Apparently it runs even better on PS5 so if you haven't already played the game and fancy running around in a freaker-infested open world please give it a chance.
I'll be adding Disco Elysium to my list of games to play in the hopefully not too far distant future. Looks and sounds very intriguing and something quite different. Shame for anyone that's already made the plunge.
@ShogunRok thanks for sticking up for us testers 😉
This is a real shame because I really like the sound of this game, but like so many others here I’ll wait for the cheap version that runs better.
Word is that installing the patch and then restarting the PS5 helps but who knows if that’s legit.
@Olmaz The PC original runs fine, so it wasn't unreasonable to assume this would run well too.
Many people now reporting that a day one patch has just dropped and has solved many issues with framerates and input lag.
Just a note here that we're aware of the day one patch. @LiamCroft will download it first thing in the morning, and obviously we'll update once we've properly tested it.
Fingers crossed this fixes the issues, though, as early reports are positive around the web!
@mookysam Touché! You're quite right in that specific occasion.
Still, why pay for full price when almost every game get down to 40-50% in a few month (in the worse cases, a year)? I know I have a backlog the size of Mount Everest, so I can wait.
Was really close to purchase. I too will wait for some more information. I’ve not ruled it out yet, but my hype has died down a bit. Thank you, Liam.
Cuno is no longer as indecipherably Liverpudlian. Sturgeon must condemn.
@LiamCroft I’ve somewhat worked out the interaction controls based on how it worked on the PC. Right stick to select object, tap X or R1 once to show where you have to stand, select and tap again to move into position and interact. No need to move yourself into position. The frame rate post-patch definitely isn’t 60FPS but it’s at least 30FPS with zero dips so far.
The PS3 ran The Last of Us. How can this not run properly on the PS5? I freely admit I don't know much about programming, but it seems ridiculous.
So basically a bunch of reviewers never actually played the next gen versions and just slapped a "this version is now even better" nonsense on it in regards to graphics and load times and called it a day
I wonder how quick the "pro" versions of these consoles will come out.
Ps4 Nov 2013, pro Nov 2016
Ps5 Nov 2020, pro Nov 2023?
You should at least edit to mention the patch even if you haven't tried it yet.
It doesn't speak well of you to leave it up unedited. I guess getting those clicks is still super important.
@lordzand This is a UK publication. It's 07:56 local time. Maybe give it an hour or two?
I read this literally 1 minute to late.
OH well, I'll wait for the patches then.
Backlog it is!
@lordzand To be fair @get2sammyb posted at twenty to one in the morning UK time that they’re going to get sorted on the patch - I don’t blame the team for getting some sleep first...!
Hopefully this is a case of a large day one patch but this is sad. I will qualify that Disco Elysium is one of the best games I have ever played. I am tempted to double dip just.. well, because it is that good!
Still, if it has launched for consumers in a bad way then the quality of the game is secondary.
Played for a couple of hours last night and was shocked by the poor controls and loading screens between areas. Nothing about it said PS5. Having said that, it is clearly very well written, and something about it has already started to get under my skin.
It shouldn't have launched in this state but it is only a patch away from being easy to recommend.
@PhhhCough I think I'd rather go for a slim 'n' lite version!
The sad part is that if you want a quality fully patched and working out of the game you have too go too Limited Run Games and get a old PS2 game or a fully patched indie game.
@get2sammyb Any idea how the PS4 version runs (standard or Pro?)
@Mergatro1d I think we should accept that quality releases are only for firstparty games the rest is a mess.
I have updated the article at the top with some quick impressions following the patch. While there are still some frame rate issues, they're nowhere near as bad following the update. Other issues I highlighted still persist, however.
This patch will be reflected in my final review.
@OM1993 can't wait to see how it runs on the switch if PS5 is struggling!
Not that it matters, as performance on that machine seems to pretty much get a free pass from reviewers and players because 'I can play on the toilet' reasons.
@KippDynamite I think it is because they are trying to run these games at 60fps in 4K.....most PCs struggle to run with that set up..............And the Saga of 30fps against 60fps Continues it now looks like PS5 users will have to have a lesser experience like the rest of us 🌍
@TrueAssassin86x
nope. its a great game thats been out over a year on pc, but its not a hugely demanding game so should not be in this state for ps5.
one of the best games i've played in years. lets hope they fix it
"Buggy on launch day" is just the new standard. You're better off buying a game a year or two after it first came out when you can get a "Complete" or similarly named edition that's been bug-fixed and includes all the DLC, plus is on sale at half price. Win-win-win.
The problem is of course, eventually this will lose developers money. This could be considered another win as it might start forcing them to stop releasing unfinished and not fully tested games at launch and charging full price to make early adopters alpha or beta testers depending on the state they're in.
Why not buy it?!
What an inappropriate header.
It's even on discount on the PS store?
1. Interactions = little bit awkward, but they WORK anyways. (Hopefully better in the nearfuture.)
2. FPF: Who cares? This is not an action game?
But wow, if just played an hour now, it's very promising. Refreshing.
Loving the few hours I've played so far. It's genuinely made me laugh out loud on a few occasions. Very smartly written. It reminds me of Peep Show.
Gotta admit I'm not experiencing those issues yet, and after sussing it out, find the object selection method quite satisfying. And love the game so far...
@LiamCroft I think the selection method might be a matter of taste. I'm finding it just fine, quite satisfying actually. Have never played a point and click adventure which isn't slightly fiddly at times though tbh
don't you tell me what to do i'll do as i please
@theheadofabroom I understand that but they were replying to comments about it. Even if the exact author isn't available, an editor could have made the update.
good on you to update it, but the headline is still pretty damning of the game. I guess that's what happens when you jump on something before taking the time to play it fully. you said the review was coming next week then slam it with a premature evaluation. I look forward to seeing how you trash the masterpiece in your review.
From what I’ve played this far I’ve not had any of the issues mentioned just a somewhat random collection of moments when characters aren’t fully voiced. It’s probably more a design issue but seeing as how much style and gravitas the game receives from the voice acting it’s a bit distracting when everything suddenly goes quiet ...
Was looking at the Disco Elysium Twitter and they seem to be very communicative and say they have more fixes coming soon.
I bought it, will be giving it a spin over Easter
"Patch 1.2 incoming for all platforms!
✔️Fixed locations/interactables not working
✔️Fixed items not loading
✔️Smoother controller & interaction experience
✔️Fixed various VO issues"

@lordzand I don't know how their systems work and you don't either. It would not be uncommon for changes to a public website to require multiple people. One person from the publication was responding to comments on an article they had not written.
I don't see what harm leaving it a few hours while there there comments below can have done. The people jumping on an article like this so quickly are the same people who read the comments
@theheadofabroom you say that but very few people read all the comments before posting.
Also its a blog site. It's not that hard to update. It's been done before.
@lordzand It's a digital magazine, there's a difference in how they're run
@Futureshark Did you have the time to test the game with the last update? Has the issues been solved?
@Olmaz from what I understand it's a lot better. However I play this game on my laptop and not my PS4/PS5 because it's a CRPG so I can't say for certain. Sorry.
@theheadofabroom it may well be considered a digital magazine but it's still hosted on blogging software.
Sure, but have you heard of things called rules, workflows, and user permissions?
Happy to report that in May, there have been no frame rate issues at all on PS5. I have had a couple random crashes, but thankfully have spammed quicksave pretty often through the playthrough.
This game is absolutely incredible. Artcop for life.
