What we've come to know as Project Athia, a PlayStation 5 console exclusive from Square Enix, has received an official title from the Japanese publisher. Its name is Forspoken and the small slice of footage above confirms it will launch at some point next year for PS5 and PC.
The main character is modelled after actress Ella Balinska, who is perhaps best known for her role in the 2017 version of Charlie's Angels. That protagonist's name is Frey Holland, who is described as "an ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive in the fantastical yet dangerous land of Athia." The game will take PS5 players on a "magical and perilous journey", and besides that, we still don't know much about it. Square Enix confirmed it'll be hosting another digital showcase in the summer season so let's hope more is shared then.
Gameplay helps to give us a real sense of the speed Frey will traverse the land of Athia at in this action RPG. "I canโt wait for players to experience firsthand just how satisfying it feels to move through Athia, scaling cliffs, and leaping across ravines in the future", said director Takeshi Aramaki over on the PlayStation Blog.
What do you make of this latest look at Project Athia, now named Forspoken? Let us know in the comments below.

This looks awesome!
That woman really didn't do a good job of hiding. Excited for the game though, the world and movement look amazing.
Was really looking forward to seeing more of this. It's looking very cool.
@FactCheck Thanks FactCheck, but that's in the headline. ๐
That movement animation is pretty slick. The use of "motherf***er" was a rather.....interesting choice.
Wow it seems so fluid! It reminds me of FFXV obviously but also of western action games like God of War
Traversal looks slick, I love it!
Interested to see what the story is about... felt like she was channeling a bit of Sam Jackson there "***** dragon!"
Looks good can't wait to see more. Sony stepping it up a bit now it seems.
Now this is going to be special, probably my most anticipated playstation excluisve!
With this and final fantasy 16 hopefully square enix can get their jrpg mojo back
Good title, not a real word that sounds like a real word. Also potential almost tie in w/ one of these days Amazon's Wheel of Time tv series.
I can see that actress playing Dr. Who in 5 years. After the show takes a much needed 3 or 4 year break and gets a new head writer.
First scene was way to dark, but the last few quick scenes looked nice.
If I'm still gaming in 3 or 4 years when this finally releases - see Squenix track record and it kind of reminds me of Platinum's Scalebound - I may pick it up.
Wowza! Now that looks like a next-gen game fo sho!
This game looks amazing, and if it actually does hit 2022 I'm thinking late 2022.
@b1ackjack "Luminous engine"
Thanks for the name drop, I'm always curios what engines games are on. I pretty much just assume Unreal these days unless someone says it isn't. ๐
That said, are they still using a nearly 10 year old engine or has this been updated regularly like Unreal? I did a google check but all I could find was 2012. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
The game is looking great. That writing though.........................ugh
Could be interesting. Traversal looks fun. Hate how close the camera is to the protagonist's back, though (at least it seems to zoom out when she's running).
No idea what to think of it outside of that.
Disappointed by the use of rather impractical white trainers by the main character!
I honestly prefer Project Athia (or just Athia) over Forspoken.
Itโs like FFXV... but better!
I like the setting. Sounds interesting.
Cool. I guess it's gonna be a bit like another take on "fantasy based on reality"? Idk i guess the character's appearance is throwing me off lol
I'm a sucker for attacks like the last one in the trailer tho. Hope this has a lot of badass attacks like in dragon's dogma
Iโm glad I order all my games online now because I can see myself walking into the Walmart game section and asking the clerk for foreskin on ps5
@nessisonett. No its not๐ค final fantasy 16 looks better.word up son
Looks great, so glad it's not another Final Fantasy and instead a new IP.
@Judal27 I like her appearance, what didnโt you like about it?
looking forward to this & not too long away as well.
Dont like the name as much as Project Athia, but the game looks really cool so far
@playstation1995 Final Fantasy XVI is 16. XV is 15.
@nessisonett but does it look better than 16.homie dont play that.i dont think so.word up son
@playstation1995 Iโm not really sure. I didnโt mention XVI in my comment.
@FactCheck ps5 console exclusive not ps5 exclusive so itโs launching on pc and ps5 just not on any other console like Xbox. I believe itโs a 24 month timed exclusive console though to ps5.
@theMEGAniggle too modern and too casual at that with a cape thrown on it. But even then i don't necessarily dislike it. Just not what I'm used to when it comes to these types of games
@playstation1995 I donโt think either looks better or worser because we have barely seen anything from either aside from a 2 min trailers and there both still in development so I would wait till a lengthy demo or the actual release before definitely saying which looks better but even then itโs a game so which plays better is more important. I will say I think the facial expression when she was hiding from the dragon was a ton better and looked exactly like the actor but thatโs probably why it looked better it wasnโt a crafted face but the actors face just a guess to why.
@b1ackjack Makes sense. Thanks.
@Judal27 wth does that even mean? You want her to look like a medieval soldier?
@theMEGAniggle lmao sure i guess. It'd certainly look more appealing to me considering she's fighting dragons and monsters, not going to the damn grocery store
Although apparently the MC got isekai'd into that fantasy world? which explains why she's dressed like that. If she has different outfits that'd be pretty cool
@Judal27 I suppose weโll see the context when we see it, itโll probably end up making a lot of sense
@grant4evergamer. Graphically yes.but from what i saw a glimpse of final fantasy 16.gameplay looks way better.word up son
A slighly different vibe than I originally expected. T-shirts, sneakers and muthafukkin' dragons - I dig it.
Man I hope that turns out well, itโs looking pretty good to me.
wow! this looks great. can't wait!
2022 is shaping up nicely.... Forspoken + Project Callisto + GoW + Horizon ... DAMN!
@RBMango
If I'm an ordinary dude who almost gets potentially killed by a dragon I wouldn't have clean language either
Hope they improve the character looks. The actual actor is so much better looking than the character. I think the idea is generally meant to be the other way around.
I so thought the main character was going to be Agni from the tech demo a few years ago so surprised that it wasnโt. Looks good, also seems like they may have used some of XVs assets
Definitely has my interest.
This just in: Forspoken renamed to Henceforth
Athia sounds like a game that will succeed, Forspoken sounds like a game that will fail. I don't know why, it just feels that way.
That is coming way quicker than I expected. Still hyped.
Is this action rpg like ff16 or action adventure like tomb raider? Either way, the setting looks cool ๐
I don't know why SE use real world actor though, I think it's cheaper to not using actor and use the money back to the development of the game.
Edit: Just watch the trailer, the story seems interesting, I like "normal people in the fantasy/unnaturals world" setting ๐
I'm always down for new IP. Hope they knock it out of the park!
(American baseball reference)
@FactCheck its a console exclusive, pc is not a console but its still a ps5 "CONSOLE" exclusive
Looks really kool, as @wiiware says I would be keen to know if it is more akin to Tomb Raider or FF!?!?!?
Not sure about the need for the Bad language.
"F*cking" is still a pretty strong swearword that seems to these days mean "very much" and can be used before pretty much any adjective.
"M*ther F*cking" is an even stronger swear word, is it now the case that it is used when 'very much' is not enough.
If so how about we just go full whole hog, "Is that a C*nting, Mother F*cking C*nt of a f*ck Dragon? Wow, what a massive C*nt!"
You see it kind of loses it's meaning when used so liberally.
Call me a prude, but I think it's a bit unnecessary.
Colour me intrigued! Liking the visuals. The movement/combat is giving me Prototype/Infamous vibes but looks more polished. This is certainly on my watch list. Just hope the story and gameplay are fleshed out so its not just flashy movement and visuals.
@ThroughTheIris56 "That woman really didn't do a good job of hiding."
Whacha talking 'bout? Hiding behind a waist high barrier with your head sticking out the top works every time... right?
@Futureshark I'm not a fan of swearing in dialogue simply for the sake of it or as a way of upping the maturing of something. A prime example when Bayonetta randomly shouts "f-off" in amongst her flirty battle quips, it feels really out of place and unnecessary.
But in the context here, it seems perfectly normal to me. Who wouldn't drop and f or mf-bomb in that sort of situation? I know I would! A dragon just appeared! The c-bomb just isn't that kind of reactionary swear though, that really would have felt out of place and like they were trying to get swears in.
@LiamCroft @Ogbert indeed I see your point, perhaps this topic would make a good weekend soapbox discussion.
What about it Liam Croft (do you have a twin sister called Lara btw?), the use of swearing in games? There's always discussion about sex & violence, but not so much about bad language.
Looks absolutely sick!
Crazy the graphical difference between this and FF16.
This looks really high end, reminding me of that Unreal Engine 5 demo, yet FF16 looked a bit 'last-gen'.
2022 is already looking pretty stacked for PS5.
God of War Ragnarok will probably drop to 2022 as well.
Looking good! A bit different from what I expected from the first trailer, but I think this is going in a good direction.
@Futureshark I'd pay $200 for a game starring Samuel L Jackson dropping F bombs and MF-ers every 2 seconds.
@Old-Red I agree, but then we're gaming nerds. We don't get the masses as well as the legions of focus groups. To me Athia sounds like a fantstical game with magic. Forspoken sounds like a gritty urban survivor story...like every other AAA game. In a way I guess the game is both, but Forspoken needs guns and cars, a backstabbing weasel, and a vendetta. Athia needs dragons and magic.
Either way we get a gritty, western version of the Magical Girl trope.
@b1ackjack Hopefully it performs a lot better than it did for XV though. Pretty game, but it runs like a dog, and drops to what feels like 320p if you want 60fps....
@Octane Best RPG ever. You want me to F**ing get you what? Why don't you go and get you own MF**ing sht. I'm here trying to save the MF**ing entire GD planet with two F**ing pistols and whatever the F this F**ing magic belt is and you want me to go and F**ing retrieve the magic ring your MF**ing dumb Az lost? How 'bout I break your MF**ing kneecaps?"
I will buy the $90 digital deluxe edition with the director's commentary and behind the MFing scenes videos, Sony, take note! Maybe have Kojima direct it just for the added "what did I just experience" element.
@Futureshark I dunno, I hear more swear words walking 5 minutes to the local corner shop and back than Iโve done in the last 1000 hours of gaming.
@NEStalgia Sign me up!
@themightyant Lol, obviously it's looking for someone with a full body, not just a head.
@ThroughTheIris56 yeah, head without a body = a corpse, classic dragon logic ๐
HYPE, I am loving how fluid the gameplay and combat/traversal is. Also that cutscene with her cursing about the dragon XD.
