The next big step for immensely popular MMO Final Fantasy XIV is to get up and running on PlayStation 5. But before it gets an official release on Sony's next-gen system, Square Enix is giving everyone a chance to get in on the action with an open beta.
The beta will begin on the 13th April. Again, anyone can participate ā all you need to do is download the beta from the PlayStation Store and get stuck in. If you're new, you can sample all of the content that's available in the game's trial version. Those who are already part of Final Fantasy XIV can simply log in with their existing account details, carrying across all of their progress. Easy!
What's more, the open beta will stretch on right up until the full launch of Final Fantasy XIV on PS5. We don't know when that's happening just yet, but the release date will be determined by the success of this beta testing period. We imagine that players won't be waiting very long.
Final Fantasy XIV on PS5 will boast a number of improvements, including "lightning fast" load times, native 4K resolution, a 60 frames-per-second frame-rate, 3D audio, and haptic feedback through the DualSense controller.
Will you be immersing yourself in Final Fantasy XIV on PS5 later this month? Let the adventure begin in the comments section below.

I'm still impressed an MMO requiring monthly subs still exists and has the sizeable player-base that it does.
I'm so glad the beta will be around until the proper launch. I imagine it'll probably launch for real alongside Endwalker. Would probably make sense. Really looking forward to it anyway - kind of been saving up a bunch of the post-Shadowbringers MSQ for this.
@Broosh After just recently getting back into the game with the announcement of the PS5 beta. It not hard to see why this game have a massive player base even with charging a monthly sub. There something in the game for everyone to enjoy. As someone doesn't like the mmo grind. I can still get on every day and enjoy the game due to it heavy social elements that hub area give, and well... I like dressing my kawaii cat person in cute outfits.
@Floki There must be something there to keep the wallets open! I've always been curious so I'll check it out when this beta opens. I'm not much of an MMO player personally (some light ESO and SW Old Republic here and there), so I'm interested to see what this game brings to the table.
@Broosh I mean, World of Warcraft has been going strong for nearly two decades...
@dskatter I suppose the difference there being WoW has a longstanding audience where FFXIV had to appeal to new fans (and after a botched initial launch no less). But fair point.
So will the client pop up around the 13?I really want to give it a try !
Anyone who somehow still has 100g left on their PS5 you mean. š„
I'm considering coming back to this but I have so many other games in my back catalog I don't have time for an mmo.
Maybe a PS5 version will motivate me.
@Broosh Square Enix would never drop the Sub fee, FFXI still has it (after 16 years) and DQX too (11 years)
@IonMagi Yeah I don't expect them to drop it either. My of comment was just about I'm surprised the general model is alive and well in a world where we have non-sub MMOs. I'm still gonna give this trial a shot!
@Broosh there still quite a few
@WizzNL everyone forgotten that Final Fantasy 11 online is still a thing lol and still running and getting some updates
Maybe about time I got back in. I loved my time in the game but once I caught up after Shadowbringers, thought Iād wait till next expansion is coming up. Curious to see what ps5 will bring
@Broosh A paid subscription scheme is a lot better than the paystore structure MANY other games have. Sure, FFXIV has a pay store as well, but 95% is aesthetic items one doesn't even need. Far better than paying hundreds a month for a P2W game
@Sukocat I suppose it would be interesting to see how a pay-up-front, no microtransaction system would work š
I've never played an MMO. Having worked from home for years i've always felt this was a recipe for disaster as i've literally seen people lives go off track due to them. Plus i'm a very slow, methodical and probably quite selfish gamer who's not used to being a team player or being social in games. However FFXIV does have my interest.
Anybody with a similar disposition actually played FFXIV?
