Update: Sony has confirmed that the latest additions to PlayStation Now, specifically Marvel's Avengers and Borderlands 3, are the PlayStation 4 versions only. There had been lingering hopes that the absence of a PS5 upgrade path could be due to error, but this is intentional according to the organisation.
Square Enix has explained that fans will be able to transfer their save from the PS4 version of Marvel's Avengers to the PS5 edition should they choose to buy the game at a later date.
Original Story: Sony’s big PlayStation Now update this week is one of the best in a long time, with Marvel’s Avengers and Borderlands 3 both part of the lineup, showcasing the company’s commitment to the subscription service. However, it’s also a demonstration of how messy the manufacturer’s membership model is, as despite both titles featuring free PS4 to PS5 upgrades, you’ll only be able to play the last-gen version.
There was some confusion regarding this earlier in the week, so we decided to test it out. Using our PS Now subscription on PS5, we were able to stream the PS4 versions of each of the aforementioned titles. You can also download the games to your hard drive, but you can only download the last-gen versions; if you want to “upgrade” to the PS5 edition, then you’ll need to effectively pay for the game.
PS Now, as it is right now, is a PS4 service – there are no PS5 games included on it. However, we do feel this once again underlines the messy transition that Sony’s console is going through. With both Marvel’s Avengers and Borderlands 3 offering native PS5 versions with free upgrades, many PS Now subscribers had rightly assumed they’d get access to the next-gen ports as well. That’s not the case.
It’s still a good update for the subscription service, but it’s perhaps a reminder that the platform holder needs to go back to the drawing board a bit here. Despite efforts to improve the quality of PS Now – which, to be fair, have been somewhat successful – it still doesn’t feel like the firm is taking the service seriously. Hopefully by the end of the year the organisation will have revamped everything, so misunderstandings like this one cease to exist.

You know what would be a good upgrade to PS Now? Bringing it to the rest of Europe at least.
I know, I sound like a broken record by now
@Voltan Well this is the thing, they definitely need to go back to the drawing board and revamp the whole thing.
People question why Sony doesn't take PS Now more seriously, but like you rightly point out, it's not available in most countries and I believe they only have capacity for 5 million people in terms of streaming. As such, they're kinda handicapped.
I'm sure it's happening behind the scenes, but I really hope Sony is taking a long look at all its services, and almost going back to the drawing board with them. Things feel messy and unfocused at the moment, and that's not a good way to earn consumer trust.
I believed that a free upgrade would be possible. This is a shock.
Yeah, very disappointed in this news.
It’s so ridiculous that I’ve spent £450 on a PS5 and am basically having to pay an additional ‘PlayStation Tax’ on games to get better graphics etc. It’s a PlayStation with better specs, give me the god damn update for free.
Sony really gotta get better at this, fast.
@itsfoz Well the problem here is that... If you own the game you do get the upgrade for free. But if you "own" the game through PS Now, then you're not entitled to the free upgrade.
You're absolutely right, it's extremely messy, and just another niggly demonstration of how fragmented this console transition has become.
I don't think individual examples like this are the end of the world really, but they all add up and start to give the impression that this console is a bit of a mess. (It's not, but Sony definitely needs to go back to the drawing board and revamp everything before the year is out.)
I would guess (utterly guess) that they've limited capacity for PS3 emulation (as they use custom silicon with the equivalent of 8 PS3's on one board) for streaming.
@get2sammyb Yeah, really silly either way. And also it’s not even an argument of developers needing the money to make the next gen upgrades. I’m sure some of these updates are a drop in the ocean for them and.. even if that’s not the case, the profit Sony earn from PS5 sales should be going to those developers to make this updates.
Separately and back to your point, PS Plus and Now need to be joint with a couple of Plus benefits going to all users, same method Microsoft just used and then Sony can boost this price a little.
Ps Now is not ven avaliable in my country so this is more like PS Never
This is disappointing... very sorry I actually purchased the service in the first place :/
Sony messaging is a mess at the moment. Why would you not include your new console in your subscription service?! Why put ps3versions of games you could ps4 ones on, like last of us? The first 18 months of a new console sets up the rest of the generation. There are hardly any ps5s in the wild, how much extra would this cost them to include?
@Medic_Alert I agree, total revamp needed across the board. Unification of different subscription models required.
I'm not being paid a six dollar salary to figure this out, but if it was me I'd scrap PS Now and I'd unify everything under PS Plus (which is their success story).
Perhaps they could have two tiers of PS Plus? Like PS Plus remains as it is, then they can offer a more advanced PS Plus + (lol) for people who want even more perks.
Dayum. I was just complimenting Sony for the ongoing improvement of their services lineups. That kind of drags it.
Hope it was just a mistake and we'll be able to upgrade the PS4 versions to PS5.
And everyone shat on Smart Delivery as a "gimmick"...
No blocked upgrades, no dual installations, no save file conversion, no convoluted service support.
It's almost like it is a great idea.
Should be entitled to the ps5 upgrade, abit of a shambles I don't want to seem cheap but if you pay for a sub you should be entitled to it.
"PS Now, as it is right now, is a PS4 service – there are no PS5 games included on it." Interesting way to sugar coat it.
Game Pass isn't just an Xbox One service (since it started there originally).
I really like the PS5, but Microsoft is killing it in the actual "service" department. Actually thinking about the optics of cross-gen releases and doing Smart Delivery makes Game Pass ever sweeter since I get the version of the game based on the platform being installed. Not this "well PS Now is a PS4 service."
Yet, despite all these "issues", PS5 will still be more popular since Sony has engrained itself into a vast majority of gaming vernacular. I bet a majority of people looking for a next-gen system (I guess it's current gen now, though) know absolutely nothing about Game Pass offerings, nor care to look into it at all. It's all about "getting the new PlayStation".
So kudos to Sony for that.
Just copy Microsoft, albeit without day 1 access to first party exclusives. PS Plus can stay as it is - giving access to the instant game collection and online multiplayer. That will give access to those PS5 titles that are currently being missed on Now. Then a PS Plus 'Ultimate' tier would have the same benefits, but add the library and functionality of PS Now.
Ultimately the PS Now branding is irrevocably damaged due to poor early decisions (cost, business model, infrastructure) and the slow global roll out.
People immediately criticise it and compare to game pass without scratching beneath the surface. Its like people criticising PSN on PS3, despite the fact it was free compared to Xbox live. It took a long time for Sony to shake that perception.
Because in some ways Now is superior to Game Pass (i'm not drunk, promise - GP is a fantastic proposition for the consumer and even i have been sorely tempted to jump onboard). There are more games on the service (and if Sony is sensible and pours legacy PS1, PSP and Vita content in there, there would be even more), and crucially, its half the price.
There is a service in there. Sony just need to be smart and start utilising it properly to get people invested. Adding legacy content, appealing to nostalgia, and an appealing trial price to upgrade to a PS Plus ultimate package would go a long way to getting people on board
@Rob_230 Gamepass is all downloads, there's no streaming at all (on the console versions), so in that sense GP is actually better.
@get2sammyb Yes, having a PS+ and a PS+ Platinum service is the way to go. PS+ Platinum would also include PS Now, which is then the streaming-only part of the existing service, which can later be replaced by a PS5 emulation solution. With PS+ Platinum, you would also get access to all the games which were released as PS+ free games since the beginning of the service. My main concern: Sony would reduce the number of free PS+ (standard subscription) games to 1 per month to push the Platinum service.
@Dislecksier whoops, thanks for correcting me. Edited before i get scrummed with people telling me the same. thanks for letting me know 😊
@Max_the_German Bloody love the name PS + Platinum. That would be a great nod back to the PS1 days with the Platinum greatest hits releases.
@GamingFan4Lyf To be clear, I'm not trying to sugar coat, just explaining that Sony never advertised PS Now as including PS5 games.
I still think it's a total mess of their own making and they absolutely need to do better to tidy things up.
It needs to be rebranded badly, whenever I hear PS now I immediately think of failure or a failed service as I'm sure others do as well. The two tier PS plus service Sammy suggested sounds perfect.
@get2sammyb If they paid more than six dollars they might get someone that COULD figure it out!
@get2sammyb i think something will happen this year. JR said in an interview before PS5 launched that an answer to Game Pass was coming, but he wasn't ready to talk about it - And i just can't believe it was this initiative to get more games launching day 1 on plus. Neither can it be the stay at home initiative.
My guess is Sony want to launch Now in every country before revealing their grand plan - even if it doesnt really make sense to follow that path
@Dislecksier Haha!
@Rob_230 I guess the problem with PS Now is they've had like six or seven years to figure this out, and have somehow found themselves lapped by the competition.
The fact that we're still waiting for them to roll it out properly is particularly shameful really. I know it's a complicated thing, but the landscape has changed a lot since they launched this thing and they've let their asses get kicked.
My problem with Sony for the longest time is that when they take things seriously, they always deliver great products (PS4, PS Plus, PSVR, etc) but as a company they always end up having parts of the business they half ass (PS Now, PS Vita, and so on).
Do it properly or don't do it at all in my opinion. You can't be half-in on some things and all-in on others, that's not a good experience for your customers.
As people have said this is just another instance where Sony don't seem to be at the top of their game at the moment. I bought an Xbox Series S this weekend (secondary to my PS5) and I am blown away by how much easier everything is. Everyone talks about Gamepass but it wasn't until I sat down with my console and looked at what was available to install I realised how insane it is.
When it comes to back compat, the 360 games I've installed are running 4k textures and more stable framerate!!! Just imagine a world where Playstation's first party PS3 games were upscaled and improved to play on the PS5....what we actually get is PSNow.
I've been a big Playstation fan for a long time but I'm telling all my friends who aren't big gamers to buy Xbox, it's the obvious choice. Pull your socks up Playstation!!!
EDIT: General reminder that this is all a bit of fun and shouldn't ruin anyone's day.
@get2sammyb Fair enough.
It is a messy situation. Sony should have never treated cross-gen games as a separate game - at least not from a user stand point.
Obviously, the versions are actually separate builds of the game, but user should never see that - just install the best available version of the game on PS5 (whether it be PS4 version or PS5 version) - at least for those games that get free upgrades.
Things like this actually don't surprise me. I was at a conference a few years back and I had the pleasure of talking to someone from our Tokyo HQ and he said that despite all of the forward-thinking technology that comes from Japan, the country still conducts business like it's the 1980's.
He said it can take months to setup getting your paychecks direct deposited to your bank account. Everything needs to be done the "old-fashioned" way seemingly before the internet even existed!
It kind of explains why Nintendo's services and offerings sometimes seem extremely archaic. Old-world thinking with new-world technology.
I was definitely hoping for the ps5 version, it's like when they gave us FF7 but we can't get the upgrade. What's the point then? I don't want to play the basic version when there is a better one coming. It seems like Sony is still more focused on the ps4 at the moment.
Maybe when PS5s are in more homes Sony will start focus on it more.
@get2sammyb been saying it for years now. There is no need ps now and ps plus as separate, make them one service.
@itsfoz Erm, PS Plus Collection hello?!
Another day, another 'outrage'. When will it end?
If owning a PS makes you feel so miserable perhaps it's best if you game elsewhere.
🤦
@mrobinson91 same here man, I bought a Series X through XAA last week, was relatively non-plussed about Xbox (loved the 360, never touched a One), but it's blown me away how good it is. I installed the three FF13 games from my old 360 discs, and they're running in 4K / 60 with optimisation, it's proper love for back catalogue games. I still think the interface is a bit of a pig, and the store seems like a disaster zone, but as a system / service combo with Gamepass, it's knocked my socks off
In terms of a two-tier subscription service what are people happy to pay? What if you're happy with just Plus? Well we not be given a choice?
I'm due to renew my annual subscription at a cost of £50. I don't extend it even when there's a sale as who knows what the future may bring.
@Col_McCafferty I think it's important to provide constructive feedback in areas where PlayStation could be doing better.
This is only a small issue in the grand scheme of things, but it doesn't mean we should just accept it. While I agree people definitely go overboard with their criticisms, we should absolutely hold Sony to a high standard.
Fortunately, I'm sure they're well aware they need to do better in areas like this, and I hope to see improvements soon.
@Col_McCafferty In my opinion, they should keep PS Plus exactly as it is, as that's been a real success story and people seem happy with it.
I'd then build from that to offer a more expensive PS Plus Ultimate version or whatever, which includes more perks and better aligns it with Game Pass. The key is that the Ultimate version would be optional; if you just want to continue with standard PS Plus, then that's fine and nothing should change.
Shambles really.
Fair enough if these games had paid PS5 upgrades, but they are free, yet PS5 owners are stuck with a PS4 version.
Sony need to get their act together.
@Col_McCafferty Haha - collection is great and free. PS Now is shocking and costs money. Couldn’t be referring to more opposites my friend.
Doesn’t make me feel miserable, far from it. Wouldn’t be a true fan if I wasn’t trying to seek out where it needs improving.
This is an embarrassing mess.
Hell, you gotta give Microsoft their dues. I’m not a fan of subscription based gaming but Microsoft is definitely handling many of these issues better.
@get2sammyb
A two tier system would be fine, and much better than the current system, as games wouldn’t be duplicated between them.
While we’re at it, let’s allow people to purchase plus without the online element too, at a slightly cheaper price, for those of us who rarely play online.
@get2sammyb ps+1?😗
@Medic_Alert totally agree. Especially regarding the lack of exclusives on ps now. Even if they added them after a year like EA do with EA Play, I would be more willing to buy into it. However Game Pass and PS Plus are just treading on Now's toes, really no point to Now with them 2 services currently smashing it out of the park ( and PS+ is really good right now, Bugsnax, Oddworld, Control Ultimate, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Days Gone, Concrete Genie, as well as the bonus games ps5 owners get like God of War, Last of Us and Detroit).
I am happy with just using Plus and Game Pass at the moment.
@thefourfoldroot
They’ll never do that.
I played two missions of Black Ops Cold War campaign and got bored. I uninstalled it to free up space on the PS5. I would have loved to have just purchased multiplayer and zombies for 50 bucks instead of 70 bucks instead.
But publishers will never, ever do that.
@get2sammyb But how much and what sort of games should be on this Ultimate thing? Are you talking Sony Studio games Day One?
What games will be on the normal plus? Sony Studio games after 2/3 years of release?
Whatever they do some people will find reason to moan. It seems some want them to copy Game Pass. What if they were to do that but charge more? Would people be happy with that?
This just highlights how little they care about their services along with the neverending duplication of titles.
But they’re free upgrades! Why does this always have to be so complicated 😂
To think that you’d be able to magically “unlock” or upgrade to the PS5 version if the PS4 version of a game is on PS Now is wishful thinking. There’s been no upgrade path in the past (from PS3 to PS4 on PS Now), so why would we think there would be one now (from PS4 to PS5 on PS Now)? Unless the goal of this article is to advocate for change...in which I’m all for it. Advocate away!
On PS Now, you can play the PS3 version and NOT the PS4 version of quite a few games. Examples include the following: Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, Borderlands, Catherine, De Blob 2, Flower, Guacamelee, Injustice, Journey, Marvel Puzzle Quest, Need for Speed Rivals, Red Faction Guerilla, Resident Evil 4, 5, 6, RE Revelations, RE Revelations 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Sniper Elite v2, Super Stardust HD, The Last of Us, TLOU Left Behind, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, The Wolf Among Us, and Uncharted 1, 2, 3, and Zen Pinball Classics.
Sony needs to unify these various services into a viable GamePass competitor. This glut of services with overlapping games, weirdness regarding next-gen updates, etc. is just going against the momentum Sony still has coming off of one of their most successful console generations.
@GamingFan4Lyf I think the PS5 is certainly more aspirational.
You have to remember though, Playstation was the by-word for console gaming during the PS1 and 2 eras. Then XBox came creeping into the language in the confused PS3/360 era, mainly because of the PS3s messed up and later release compared to the X360.
Of course, that got blown back into the weeds by the PS4 juggernaut!
Let's hope Sony don't blow it and allow 'XBoxing' or "going to play some xbox" back into common parlance - they certainly seem to be making enough mistakes at the moment that it could happen when it shouldn't.
@get2sammyb
I agree with constructive criticism, we don't want to become like Nintendo fans that let Nintendo walk all over them. 😅
@Col_McCafferty I don't know in terms of pricing because it depends on what they decide to offer, but as many other commenters have pointed out, they definitely can't chug along with all these overlapping services.
They need a better strategy, because this PS Now thing clearly isn't going anywhere.
@get2sammy but what are you people asking for? A GP equivalent which costs £15 a month? MS can afford this, Sony can't. Maybe at £20 per month but that would work out far more than I spend annually on games.
They should just scrap Now, leave Plus as it is but maybe add two more titles per month. Keep it the same price or as close as possible.
PS now could've been a decent backwards compatibility solution or a serious rival to gamepass, instead it's stuck in a terrible middle ground and fails in both regards
@sanderson72 I mean, I am fine either way - I own both a Series X and a PS5.
If it does start moving more in Xbox favor, than so be it. Microsoft is putting up an amazing fight. It's making all the right moves and I feel it is more deserving of gaining ground in this new generation. People just need to dive in to Series X|S to see that.
It was a huge blow to Nintendo when Sony started taking over because Nintendo was making a lot of mistakes - both in terms of hardware design and the way it had been doing business. Nintendo's way wasn't the only way and I think Nintendo is better for it now - I think the Switch is brilliant! Nintendo still isn't perfect and still has a lot to improve upon; but the company is still going strong - way more than it was in the N64/Gamecube days.
It's tough to stay top dog as the only place left to go is down again.
If knocking Sony off it's throne for a little while is the kick in the pants it needs to do better, then let it be so.
I dont use ps now as it has no benefits for me personally..i have a ps+ sub and that covers all my gaming needs..i bought avengers for £10 and i never expected a ps5 upgrade let alone a free one so that was a very nice bonus when it dropped..fed up with borderlands tbh but i know i'll probably end up buying it cheap at some point and then getting the free upgrade so again i'm not losing out here..i can understand peoples frustrations and sony do need to sort the mess out to keep everybody happy..if thats possible..
@Cikajovazmaj Yes, me too. It's a waste of money. I buy a PS5 and PSNOW subscription, only to find out that I don't get PS5 upgrades as standard? Shockingly bad PR for Sony. They seriously have to get their act together. They could see peoples allegiances shift to other consoles at this rate.
The thing is anytime there is a free upgrade available for a game on GamePass, it gets it automatically because of Smart Delivery.
So yeah, this is pretty annoying. I have both but GP trounces PS Now in every way.
@Col_McCafferty Stop being a company shill. Everyone in here has valid criticism because they buy PS software and hardware products. Most people in here are unhappy that the competition is offering more value to their subscription services. They only want the product to be better and not stagnate the way it is right now.
@BrainHacker Company shill or maybe this doesn't bother me?
I don't subscribe to Now nor do I have a PS5. It depends on whether you are reliant on Plus and/or Now to satisfy your gaming requirements or if, like me, you're not.
They may have to introduce their own GP equivalent but don't be too shocked when it costs more than what MS are happy to charge.
@GamingFan4Lyf I love how you act if Microsoft one of the richest companies in the world is the underdog. 🤪
The company that kills off competition by buying up everything that is competition just like the "evil" Epic.
Im a little sceptical toowards the US where its a sport that the big companies buy up everything and kill of the competition.
We even see it in the Netherlands how they disregard regulation too gain the upperhand and kill of the competition. Stop acting like MS is a small player...
@Flaming_Kaiser I never said Microsoft is a small player. But there is no doubt that PlayStation is the popular system. Many of friends on social media only mention PlayStation 5. How hard it is to get a PlayStation 5. Zero mention of Xbox. Sony has a huge grip in gaming now just like Nintendo had a grip in the 80's - 90's (pre PlayStation).
It's a huge credit to Sony for making all the right moves when it did. From a popularity standpoint, Microsoft is the underdog. I bet if I even mentioned Smart Delivery and Game Pass, no one would have ANY idea what I am talking about because it's all about PlayStation.
That doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is making a lot of right moves - regardless of how popular those moves are with the Sony crowd. They are the right moves for the company. Smart Delivery is hassle free. Game Pass provides an amazing value for a lot of people - regardless of the opinions that it's "renting games" and "hinders developers" It's an incredible value - and Series X|S are 100% supported with Smart Delivery titles (and some even non-Smart Delivery titles like Madden '21).
Yes, Microsoft is using it's purse to make large acquisitions. Sony has made acquisitions of it's biggest studios as well - yes, it's been a long time, but if you look at a list of Sony's first-party studios, I think about half came through acquisitions. Yes, they were companies that primarily developed Sony exclusives, but they were acquisitions none the less. So the practice isn't over Sony's head, it's just that Microsoft does it more often.
We both know if Sony had the money and opportunity to buy ZeniMax (who was already looking to sell), Sony would have scooped them up and cut off the company from everything but PlayStation. Don't act like Sony is any different.
And no, Microsoft doesn't need the Xbox division to make any money. At all. It just made a $20 billion deal with the US Army for HoloLens. Microsoft could probably give away the Series X|S to people and not bat an eye - and PlayStation would STILL be more popular.
Here's a question, what if Sony were to combine Plus and Now but not include Sony Studio games Day One? Maybe they'll be added a year or two down the line but initially if you want them then you'll have to buy them. Would people be okay with that?
They could include all older games and do the occasional deal for a major third party release, as well as their extensive back catalogue, but keep their big new AAA games off the service for an indeterminate length of time.
Do people see the value in this or does it have to completely copy GP in order to be worthwhile?
I agree this is messy but I expected this when the games were announced after the ff7 plus game was announced it wouldn’t get an upgrade
Marvel avengers and Borderlands 3? At least we know what's coming to PS+ at some point.
@Col_McCafferty It doesn't bother you but you're willing to downplay other people's criticism about PS+/PSNow. If Sony is going to create a Gamepass equivalent, then they will certainly match the monthly subscription price offered from their competition. And I'm not reliant on subscription services because I still do buy games.
@BrainHacker I don't think they can afford to prize match it unless they don't include Sony Studio games from it day one. Maybe give it a year and let people make the choice of either buying a copy (physical or digital) or waiting a year for it to come to their subscription service.
They are a rich company but their pockets are nowhere near as deep as Microsoft's, don't forget that.
@Col_McCafferty I'm not saying Sony should launch their exclusive games on PSNow because it doesn't make financial sense to them, but many people in here are annoyed that Sony cannot provide even the most basic features in their subscription service.
PS+ is giving away cross-gen games but the only version available is the PS5 and it is the same with PSNow but the opposite. Sony should really create a feature similar to Smart Delivery. Backwards compatibility and upgrading games should be seamless but instead we have this cobweb style of accessing different generations of games.
Bit naff, I think. But I'm not rushing to sub to Now or play Avengers so it's a meh for me.
PS Now is so backwards when compared to gamepass, it's laughable. And I own a PS5.
Not a surprise. The PS5 games that have been on PS+ which are cross buy for PS4 as well - have only been PS5. Nobody should be surprised by this.
At this point, this is just embarrassing.
It seems like the majority of people who browse this site have absolutely no idea what PS Now (A game "streaming" service) is or how it works. Its embarrassing reading most of these comments from people on a Playstation News/fan site.
I was seriously gonasign up to try Avengers even just for the campaign but I've used my free trial so would have to pay. I was happy to until I learned this, what insentive does this give to PS5 players to even consider PS Now? Very dissapointing especially when Gamepass is getting Sony 1st Party Games scaled to whatever hardware they have automatically.
@get2sammyb I did not know about the availability & scalability issues before my comment about but still they've been able to see what Xbox is dong for a while now so they need to get the finger out. It's like PSN name changes all over again only this time they have that escapade to look back at in hindsight & should be more prepared going forward.
@munstre It may be about money but if Sony wants PS5 owners to get PS Now, they need to step up their game. It’s a new generation. Why would people who spent $500 on a new console sign up for a service that doesn’t even seem to want to acknowledge its existence?
I’m not renewing. Period. Just focusing on GamePass as my subscription since it actually gives me games for my new console.
Sony is cutting corners that damage its long term consumer base for the PS5.
Trying the PS4 version of Avengers, now but what's up with those loading times on my superior PS5?
And here's just another reason to ignore this awful service
@munstre Are you serious? The developers are offering free upgrades for PS4 games. Playstation's DRM system is just flawed. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony overlooked the functionality of Smart Delivery, when they were developing the PS5 because they don't believe in preserving games.
Sony is not even investing their money wisely because most of it involves shady practices. they paid developers for time-exclusivity deals and lock contents from other platforms instead of scouting gaming studios for acquisition.
I am Happy with PS+ as it is and think Sony is doing a great job with the service and its price. They need to change nothing about PS+! I subbed to PS+ on the 3rd month when it came out on PS3 with no laps in service.
I don't want PS Now I paid for one year but only played about 45 minutes playing Lemmings. So many new titles were coming out I didn't have time to use PS-Now. I'm not really into older games but Sony dropped the price to $59 and i decided to give it a try.
PS-Now is about there the 800 games on PS-Now! Not the ONE game they put out that's also on PS + for the people that do not have a sub to PS+ and only one to PS-Now. Even if it happened 20 times that's 20 out of over 800 games. There are two tiers right now you can already combine the two services by buying both.
I do not want Game Pass! If I did I would have bought a XBox. I have looked into it several times look for a reason to purchase a XBox. From what i saw the answer was no thanks.
@GamingVeteran No offense, but from your comment I'm not sure YOU understand PS Now.
I've got a $1 month of PS Now right now, and have kicked the tires on it a few times before. I've played about 10 new (to me) games this month - only 2 were streaming. The rest downloaded and installed to my PS5 and/or PS4 Pro, and played locally.
For almost all the PS4 games, it works just like Game Pass - you pick the game, wait for it to download/install, and then play. For PS3 games, you can only stream. For PS2, it's a dice roll (mostly depending on if it's a PS3 port or a PS4 port - I don't think any of them are "real" PS2 games).
As to the original article - it's right on target. I was disappointed that I don't get the PS5 version of Avengers - it's only on the service a few months anyway, why not give us the best available version if we've got the hardware, to make the best possible impression? I understand WHY Sony treats PS4 and PS5 versions of a game differently (it's about security and cheating), but they've done an astonishingly awful job working with developers to streamline upgrades. Sony is stumbling over themselves a lot here, with lessons I thought they'd learned.
Microsoft's announcement of the XBox One was all about giving developers the features they wanted to make back money they thought they were losing to the secondary market. Sony's PS5 rollout seems, in many ways, to be about giving developers the ability to monetize PS5 upgrades, while this time it's Microsoft standing up for the players. That hurts to say, but it's pretty darn clear.
My beef with psnow, is the streaming portion of it. It's not an option, for some games, but the only way to play said games. Even with a wired high speed connection, the streaming is atrocious. I look at psnow for the old school games, because I buy the newer games. But not having an upgraded version, for the ps5, ala "optimized for x/s" is a bad look. But sony has been winning the last few years, don't see why they have to switch things up. Crisis precipitates change.
@GamingFan4Lyf As a gamer not a rabid fan I'm 100% in agreement. Consoles are not football teams , they are a means to play games and with competition the players win. I get why some people who can only afford a single option want the best service they can get on that option but so many players seem to care less about games and more about putting down other gaming platforms.
@GamingFan4Lyf that last part is not true considering how game pass being amazing is just common knowledge. Allmost every person considers it as they should when choosing
@munstre What kind of nonsense is this? PS5 users doesn't even need an upgrade because there is a PS5 version available in the PS Store. How incompetent is that? The PS5 has been out since November and yet Sony failed to prepare PSNow for the next-gen console.
"And no, Sony did not overlook ''Smart Delivery (TM)'' because they don't care about preserving games and they are evil and they hate you!" What kind of adult writes stuff like this?
What gigantic re-engineering are you talking about? Sony is creating new consoles every generation. they could engineer it to support backwards compatibility if they wanted, but they decided against it every single time.
Smart Delivery functionality is to ensure that all your games will run across generations in their best version possible, either it was optimized or upgraded for the next-gen. If you think this feature is not about preserving games then I don't know what you're talking about.
No one needs to be great at investing to know that time-exclusivity and locking contents from other platform is shady af. It doesn't add any value to the games nor will it attract Xbox or PC gamers to buy Playstation consoles. In fact, they hated Sony for this.
Played Marvel's Avengers for an hour, and uninstalled. Wow is that game boring. No thank you.
Does anyone know what date Sony is scheduled to announce they are pulling whiskers off kittens and kicking puppies?
It's far too messy. Personally I think both PS and Xbox need to rebrand/merge their existing offerings. XBL and GP don't need to exist as separate things and the sooner Sony allign PS Now with PS Plus the better.
@__jamiie Xbox already already merged XBL and GP. That what GPU is XBL+GP. They simply keep XBL for people who don't want GP.
I have loved my ps5, but shamefully I feel and maybe others that Sony have left behind its users, last year and the previous year maybe even further that they didn't seem to bothered about announcing things which ok in some ways is a good way to show things build the hype but it seems with ps now and how they are dealing with this situation on not allowing the ps5 versions to be upgraded actually makes it seems all those announcements in the past on ps5 that they didn't really care seems that they have left us behind, maybe I am wrong. I don't think all bad of sony as I still love my playstation and always will but I don't understand what's happened when ps4 was announced how much work they had done now just seems to be lost in the last couple of years and now failing on the ps now front, thats without putting both sets of games on ps now and ps plus.
I know it's an unpopular opinion but this does make sense, why would they let you upgrade rentals to next gen versions for free?
@PhhhCough That’s so weird. I use PS Now all the time, and I’ve never had a problem with streaming any of the games. No lag problems or slowdown of any kind. I’ve gotten burned when I’ve set down the remote for a few minutes and it’s kicked me off for my inactivity, but that’s understandable.
That said, I’ve had a bunch of problems with PS4’s share play option—that always says my internet speed is too slow, but I’ve never any problems with PS Now’s streaming. I’m in the US—Minnesota—not sure if that makes a difference or not. Hmm...
Sony has dropped the ball again. What an embarrassment.
