Yesterday, SEGA announced a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog game coming to PlayStation 5 and PS4 next year, but then stopped short of giving it an official name. Fans initially speculated Sonic Zap could be the title before a more devious bunch took a look through the teaser trailer's innards and discovered references to a Sonic Rangers. It's this name that appears to be what SEGA will be using when the game eventually rolls around, further solidified by the fact that Eurogamer received a press release containing that very title.
As reported by the site, it read: "Announcing new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Sonic Rangers, further details on Netflix's Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and much more!" Eurogamer was then told this morning that the press release in question is outdated and wasn't meant to be shared. However, we definitely think the cat has been let out of the bag here — Sonic Rangers is almost certainly the official name of the game, and a reveal is just being held back for a later news beat.
Besides that, there's very little we actually know about this new Sonic the Hedgehog title. It's assumed to be a 3D platformer, but not even that's set in stone just yet. What sort of game do you hope it is? Post your theories in the comments below.

My theory is is that Rangers is a a type-o and the real title will be Sonic Arrangers. It will be a florist simulator/Chao Gardens reboot.
Go Go Flower Arrangers!
@ralphdibny That would be a lot more interesting than whatever this Sonic game turns out to be!
Rangers obviously implies multiple playable characters so obviously Big the Cat must be playable!
According to the leaks earlier this year it's inspired by BOTW, so open world, with Ubisoft towers, hidden Korok-like creatures; boss characters roaming the world, etc. Everything is BOTW these days and I don't like it.
@LiamCroft 😂 ya never know! It could turn out better than the usual "it's alright but I wouldn't have played it if it wasn't a sonic game". Then again, probably not!
Sonic Team and 'Rangers', now I'm just thinking of the intro theme song to Burning Rangers on the Saturn.
Pretty sure it's going to be called "Sonic Ragnarok" and their spellcheck just went off.
Open world with RPG elements and turn based action fighting system.
You know what would be interesting? a backstory to Infinite. At the end of Forces he just sort of.......disappeared and that was it.
Open world Sonic sounds cool but I'm not at THAT level of trust with Sonic Team yet lol
I am interested in this as I've been a Sonic fan since '92 as Sonic brought me to the gaming world.
One hopes it is a new reboot for the series as frankly forces was disappointing, let's hope our favourite blue blur is back for the long term!
@LiamCroft We got a psychic here folks.
@Dr-M That sounds like the exact opposite of what Sonic is supposed to be.
@Octane That 4chan leak is surprisingly similar to what happened with Forces, back in early 2016 someone claimed to have playtested "Sonic Wars" which went back to the boost formula, had character creation, a story where Eggman wins, etc. All turned out to be true of course, and the PC version's files all reference the Wars name.
It's worrying but not surprising that this leak mentions it's rough. I would hope that since there's about another year until it releases they'll polish it up, but the Sonic Wars leak said the same, and... well.
@Orpheus79V @Sjmaster @TheFrenchiestFry @Dr-M @Octane I'm praying and hoping that the leaks this time around aren't true, we don't need a BOTW-esque Sonic game.
@KidBoruto What is your ideal Sonic game would be?
@Dr-M I'd still want it to be open world, but not BOTW-esque...hard to put into words.
@Dr-M Unleashed with day levels only and hubworlds. its that simple.
