It was inevitable – expected, even – but this is the confirmation we’ve been waiting for: Bethesda’s next-gen sci-fi role-playing game, Starfield, will not release on PlayStation 5 or PS4. While the game would have been targeting Sony’s systems at one stage – there was even rumours that the Japanese giant was trying to negotiate timed exclusivity – those platforms have now been canned. The title is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC – there’s no room even for Xbox One, which is perhaps the slightly bigger surprise here.
Microsoft had been cagey about whether it would continue to release games on PlayStation platforms, but clarified its stance when it said that Bethesda games would release “where Game Pass exists” earlier in the year. That’s obviously not on PS5 or PS4, and so here we are.

Ah well. That’s a disappointment. I guess I’ll hopefully play it on PC but not even sure if my rig will be able to handle it if it’s still a ways off.
No surprise here really. You dont pay that much just to line someone elses pocket. I'll give it a tickle on my series s when it arrives.
@nessisonett I’m in the same boat with my pc as well
@Weebleman Very true Sir.
I also have the Series S, and will give it a go I guess.
not a big deal, bethesda games dont sell well on ps consoles, only doom eternal and fallout 4 are multi million selling games of bethesda last gen
Same as the guys above. I'll just play it on Series S, which I'll hopefully get by Christmas at the latest.
No surprise. Next for being PS canned, Elder Scrolls 6.
Perhaps, as a parting gift, they might give another remake of Skyrim for the PS5 - it's probably feeling a bit left out.
Luckily for me my wife loves Halo (literally the first time I’ve ever said that haha) so she bought a Series X for future Halo releases and so I can just play it on that when this and the other burners from Bethesda/Obsidian come out on the new gen (Skyrim, Fallout *actual solo fallout not that online garbage and Outer worlds etc)
Till then I’ll be cranking my Ps5 like a boss 👌
No surprise there. Almost spot on for my 2023 prediction. November 2022 without delays. Does two years count as a console "launch window"?
Im fine with Microsoft having their own exclusives i will play it on xbox as i like alot of the Bethesda games
Oh well, at least it's on pc, I'll sub for one month gamepass and cancel it after I finished the game.
The modding community is what saves Bethesda titles, so I always buy them on PC anyways
November 22, looks like it's only on series X and s and pc.
And watch them talk about connexion and inclusion
Is it going to be basically a bigger the outer worlds? Still haven't started Fallout 4...
Surprised it isn't even on Xbox One to be honest.
But yeah, i'll be playing this on my Series X if it looks good. I need to see this in engine before I commit, Bethesda is coming off of some disappointing RPGs for me into this.
Bombshell, absolutely the most shocking news from E3 this year!!!!
May have to get a series S down the line. Im still looking forward to Deathloop tho
100% fine with this
@nessisonett Trailer ends with announcement that it will be available on game pass, day one. And it can be played via XCloud, internet speed permitting
A real shame. I don’t like MS owning it because they’ll want it to run well on the S though. I’d much rather have them be independent and make a game that’s too much for the S and it just suffers.
I’ll get it on PC most likely, but frankly, MS owning them feels like a lose lose. Not just a lose.
Well, clearly. I mean, the whole “not right to take games away from other platforms” rubbish MS spewed obviously doesn’t apply to their actions, only those of others. This is Microsoft we are talking about after all, kings of doublespeak and PR bull.
I got confused by the date. It's November 11th 2022 right? That's so far off to give a concrete day.
I am betting big that Elder Scrolls 6 is multi-platform. But new IP will continue to be exclusive to Xbox.
Could not care less, as said above sony has more than enough exclusives to keep them on top, yeah and what's the crap Microsoft spouting off about locking stuff to platforms??
@Total_Weirdo Sony explicitly said they don't believe subscription would pay off developing big AAA titles. That's the difference.
really don't care MS owns Bethesda let them get on with it. let's stick to what we come here for PlayStation.
Even though this was basically confirmed already, still stings a bit to hear the official confirmation. I wanted to play this one, but I'm too deep into Playstation at this point, no game is going to get me to buy another console.
As I said the other day when "Gamer" Phil Spencer was calling out Sony for being "evil" for denying PC Day 1 releases of Playstation exclusives,(& spent what was last gen deriding 3rd party timed exclusives as "anti-gamer")...
But apparently buying up Zenimax & cancelling what were 3rd party games mid development (remember when Bethesda were surprisingly praising the dual sense controller?),that weren't already inked & removing major 3rd party publishers just to keep them off competitors platforms permanently isn't anti-gamer?🙄🤔
But undoubtedly Xbots will keep applauding them buying up everyone regardless.
I know this is a Playstation site but you chaps seem knowledgeable - isn't it not being on X1X a bigger deal than it not being on PS4/5? I thought MS first party games were all about keeping last gen in the loop for awhile, and since MS bought Bethesdas to me that makes the game first party. Though I suppose I could be wrong on that count.
Day one on Xbox Series X for me then - no choice as to which platform I play it on - like I don't have a choice for R&C, Horizon:FW, God of War..
If I want to play these games, I have to own 'both' platforms or don't play... At least with MS, you can play on PC or Mobiles...
i am not surprised , this is like expecting a naughty dog game on xbox.
Is it just me or are 90% of XBox exclusives first person, and 90% of PS exclusives are third person? It seems weird it's somehow split that way.
Lost faith in Bethesda putting out a working game. Then relying on pc modders to resolve the problems. I'm okay with this news.
@arra1213 I am 99 per cent sure Skyrim sold three times the amount on PS4 than it did Xbox. Something like 3 million vs 1 million.
Oh Bethesda and Micro$oft you promise so much and deliver crackdown 3 and fallout 76. Heads in the clouds.
Pity we won't get to play this broken mess.
It's hard for me to care that much when I don't even know what kind of game it is. And given Bethesda's track record, its probably just going to he Fallout in space, and frankly, that's not really something I can get excited about.
"we don't want to take games away from Playstation"
@Danloaded Series S aren’t even capable of native 4K on current gen games tho
@rjejr Well technically they did say for the immediate future where they could...whether Bethesda would've supported last gen versions had they still been independent would be the question.
With XB bankrolling it with M$ & gamepass, they probably decided to avoid another Cyberpunk. Not to mention they like to live service Gamepass with episodic content to keep people subscribed so makes sense to go with new gen. Whether Bethesda's engine is less bug ridden for going exclusive time will tell.
All I want is god of war 2
@thechetearly Bethesda and Obsidian games will be going where game pass is. That means PC and Xbox only with locked exclusivity
If it's any good I'll get it on Series X, but I still don't know what it is.
Watching the show right now and all I want to see is something from Avowed.
Hmm, No gameplay video then??? + November 2022???(I think it said) By then the PS5 will have at least another 5 'AAA' games out (+ of course it will be delayed into 2023 I bet) + I bet you this will be the next Cyberpunk game i.e a buggy mess like most PC like game are.
This show is completely overloaded with FPS Games. And xbox fans accuse playstation of being overloaded with 3rd person action games!
Who cares? I don’t.
After the Fallout 76 debacle doesn’t really concern me there won’t be a PS5 release. I’d guess if it’s a success future Elder Scrolls and single player Fallout games will also be Xbox exclusive. I still have PS1 games in my backlog hehe. Also Xbox will be transitioning into service based business model in the future so they need all the games they can get their hands on.
Microsoft lost all my gaming business when they purchased Bethesda. This game was originally supposed to be a PS exclusive, but after the debacle of F76 and given how any studio Microsoft purchases botches other franchises... I'm actually laughing...
Haven't watched the trailer, was there any gameplay at all?
Or is it still just named vaporware?
Best way to game is too own a ps5 and a Pc. Simple people
No surprise there.but i couldn't care less.but hopefully arkane games Will be there.sony needs to buy bluepoint.housemarque asap.word up son
@Orochilocka skyrim official sales figures
pc 15+ million
x360 9+ million
ps3/ps4/xbone combined sales 5+ million
The fox and the grapes, part 2 😉
The Xbox/ Bethesda conference was great. Halo multiplayer looked good and Starfield being a next gen game is fantastic. I was a bit disappointed in Outer Worlds 2 (would have loved to see them work on a Fallout New Vegas 2 instead) but plenty of exciting games coming to Game Pass for the next 18 months.
Outer Worlds 2 looks exclusive to Xbox as well, and they had Xbox console exclusive before the new A Plagues Tale games.
@kingbreww true but id only be using it for exclusives. If i can justify buying the X il get that instead
@OM1993 Really? If you like flight simulators, driving games and FP shooters then I guess it was.
I don't though, indeed I see no reason to even consider buying into the Xbox platform for some time to come.
Where was the heart? The great stories and memorable characters and gameplay beyond shooting things?
I was fearing that this showcase would make me reconsider my plans to purchase a PS5. It hasn't. Sony's PS4/5 showreel last summer was better.
@kingbreww not everyone cares about 4k though. If its HD, steady frame rate and is on gamepass it will do for me. Series S is a brilliant little machine to go along with my PS5. Not saying I'll never pick up a series x, just dont need one at the mo.
@kingbreww - Not entirely true. The Mass Effect collection is native 4K on Series S, as are smaller games like The Touryst and Ori Will of the Wisps. Most are 1080p-1440p but it's absolutely capable of 4K.
So far it's hasn't wowed me, the trailer showed today had no gameplay or anything to get me hooked and certainly didn't look "next gen"
@Rob_230 "This show is completely overloaded with FPS Games. And xbox fans accuse playstation of being overloaded with 3rd person action games!"
Both things could and are true though 😐
I do appreciate it being next gen exclusive, I'm in the we gotta move forward crowd.
@Col_McCafferty
I watched the whole thing it’s was poor overall
If you take the indies. “Launch exclusive” and “In engine footage” there was not much there overall.
No Halo campaign footage at all, I was expecting an HZDFW gameplay type thing.
The only one game with amazing real gameplay footage was FH5 that did look really good, but not sure what direction the campaign has taken.
Halo was so played down and I wonder why.
The other games like farcry 6 and Battlefield etc are on PS5 as well.
I’m sticking with my PS5 that’s for sure and off to play Ratchet and Clank in a minute.
Kind of a joke it’s releasing in November of 2022... I mean outside of Halo this November there’s not a lot to be excited about in the Xbox ecosystem anytime soon.
That also means Elder Scrolls 6, and Fallout 5, are still many years away. How will those games even run on XSX? Is there a point to getting the Series X at all?
Overall the xbox exclusives (apart from halo and forza) are still a long way off and the rest of the show was cgi trailers, indies and third party games such as stalker 2, far cry 6 and Battlefield all of which are also coming to playstation. The show gets a 4/10 from me in terms of wow factor and reveals
If the average Xbox owner is happy that's the main thing. A lot of games on Game Pass this year so if you subscribe to this you may not need to but another games this year!
Whether you actually finish them is another matter entirely.
😉
This gen is the first time I am considering getting an Xbox. Not anytime soon as their exclusives are still a ways off, but perhaps xmas 2022 or early 2023.
@arra1213 but you specifically said last gen.
@arra1213 what bethesda games sold the best on PlayStation
@Shigurui ok sorry. I’ll edit my comment. I meant to say it’s not even capable of native 4K on current gen games and only the series x and Ps5 are capable of doing that
Good. Now Sony has to work on their own Space exploration RPG.
That "25 years in the making" sound like PR bull***** though, but I bet Todd Howard said the same of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.
I suppose they're going for it and you can't blame them. It still feels a bit rotten the way they've essentially paid to take a bunch of games and sequels away from people that were planned for or would have come to PS5.
Maybe we can finally stop talking about it now on the Sony side of things as it's hard to discuss without sounding bitter about it. I'll never buy an Xbox and I'm not a fan of the sub gamepass model, but Microsoft are going to dominate, slowly but surely. I'll probably go PC eventually, especially if Sony continue to release exclusives there too.
Lots of people see this as a good thing, but I really see this big push from MS as the beginning of the end for me and gaming as I know it. With ads on the console UI and the inevitable embracing of microtransactions through gamepass growth, it's just not what I want from my favourite form of entertainment. Devs I know all agree that Gamepass is pretty bad for industry going forward too. I hope Sony can keep up, but I can't see anything but them struggling in the end, especially if Xbox takes over the US.
Here's to a good PS5 generation though, it's been great so far.
It's fine since they did pay a butt load of money, so long it comes to PC as well I'm all good.
Bethesda games always been super buggy so modders are a blessing.
@helloim_anthony And a Switch.
@Jaz007 As opposed to Sony making everything play on PS4???
@AdamNovice you know it was all lies from the start and this just proves it, they couldn't say anything back then due to outcry but they knew what was happening anyways.
This is a huge blow for me, huge elder Scrolls/fallout fan, played all thier titles, including oblivion which I actually brought a PS3 to play the game, now what would I play Starfield on? I don't have any up to date pc hardware that costs thousands to play Starfield on so I guess my options are out the window and I'm certainly not going spend 500+ for current gen Xbox hardware and Xbox live just for one game, no thanks
Insert horible mean curses here even though I use Windows I really do hate Microsoft for this monopoly with popular franchises like this, dam them all! 💢💢😡😡😡😤
Yes, and God of war Ragnarok is not coming to Xbox or game pass.
Can we stop this now?
@Orochilocka
"I am 99 per cent sure Skyrim sold three times the amount on PS4 than it did Xbox"
5 million combine sales for ps3, ps4, xbone 😂
the 360 version sold 2 times than the ps3 and ps4 combined
I haven't been this tempted to buy an Xbox in about 14 years. Back then I decided on PS3 due to the exclusive games I simply couldn't miss, like MGS4.
For this reason there's no way I wouldn't buy PlayStation (already have a PS5), the only question is will I also get an Xbox. Even though I have the money, it seems crazy to buy a $500 console just to play a couple of games (for me the Series S isn't really cheaper because you can't buy cheap used games for it, and I'm not going to spend hundreds on a console only to rent a couple of games via GamePass).
While slightly disappointing, it was to be expected by this point.
Hopefully the game performs well enough, I plan to eventually try this out a few years after launch.
My advice is don't expect any other Bethesda game on Sony's consoles besides Deathloop.
MAYBE Elder Scrolls 6 if we're lucky, but I doubt it.
But Phil i heard you say platform exclusives where wrong? I guess i heard it wrong or maybe you only say thing to make good press?
@arra1213 Not surprising the game was a crime on the PS3.
About time Xbox gets an exclusive!
@__jamiie I actively despise that too. It’s not as long term though. But that is also a big problem and killed my excitement for the new God of War.
Oh well, the only people that lose out is Bethesda since they won’t see my money. It’s their loss not mine.
@wiiware
Exactly what Microsoft is asking for.
@arra1213 you said last gen, which is PS4 vs Xbox one.
PS4; 3.4 million
Xbox one: 1.85 million
If you had said all time sales, that would be a different matter. But last console gen, PS4 vastly outsold Xbox.
So now I’m 100 per cent sure.
Probably a GAS game anyway.
@KippDynamite
Fair enough but honestly I would avoid the SS. That thing might be discontinued before the game is out.
Genuine talk. Even a gamepass TV stick would be better. My opinion.
Also wait to be sure about what you want to play instead of just hype.
@Nem is GoW not coming to xbox? Unbelievable...
@Orochilocka yeah last gen ps4/xbone era, what generation are u living now? 😅
and i said last gen best seller of bethesda doom eternal and fallout 4 which are 8 and 15 million a far cry from 3+1 😂
@TheCollector316 I'm not complaining lol, it's nice that microsoft port their 1st party games day one on pc. I hope they fix xbox games store app on pc though, it's really slow, even more so than epic games store.
@arra1213 so we are clear: your original comment said “Bethesda games dont sell well on ps consoles, only doom eternal and fallout 4 are multi million selling games of bethesda last gen.”
I’ve pointed out that Skyrim, a Bethesda game, sold multi million copies on PS4, three times the amount as Xbox. Not sure what you keep banging on about, but that’s just correcting your inaccuracy.
Last gen is PS4 and Xbox one. This gen is PS5 and X/S.
@Digit2021 "Oh well, the only people that lose out is Bethesda since they won’t see my money. It’s their loss not mine."
Not a big loss.
@Pete_Stooge Shocking, isn't it? Someone should make a news article about it.
These games will release on cloud. So you can stream from your mobile, your tv, your streaming device (option should be released by the end of the year)
That's cool I'll get some use out of my Series X after all, i mean its not really not surprising is it? What drives me nuts is the lies and hypocrisy here.
Howard originally it's coming to PS5
LIE
Spencer said he doesn't like exclusives because it on hurts the gamers
Hypocrite
Either way I'm fine. I'll be playing it regardless of platform. My series X has been collecting too much dust so this is a good thing.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Nope you heard correctly.
I said it then and I'll repeat it now
Phill Spencer is a lying hypocrite.
If he feels that way so strongly then give Playstation Forza and halo or stfu.
He won't, why? Because hypocrite
If he had God of war, last of us, ghosts of tsushima etc in HIS stable would he still make those comments? No I didn't think so. And after buying zenimaz aka Bethesda does it come to any real surprise that Stanfield would suddenly become exclusive, even though when first announced Ron Howard DID SPECIFICALLY SAY
Coming to PLAYSTATION 5 AND XBsX
@TWOscrews I think he really needs some software because the value of gamepass does not work as good as he wants. 🤣
Making a new IP exclusive is probably a bad move for Bethesda.
They will also sell very few copies due to GamePass, new loss leader?
But I can see why MS is demanding this, they desperately need Xbox exclusives.
Personally, there nothing on the Bethesda radar that I really feel I wanted anyway.
