Sony has today deployed a new PlayStation 5 firmware update, bringing the console up to version 21.01-03.20.00.04-00.00.00.0.0 (yes, really). Weighing in at 902.3MB, it should only take you a few minutes to install. What does the patch actually do, you ask? Well, here's the single note associated with the update:
- This system software update improves system performance.
Yep, it's another one of those. However, the second update which follows immediately afterwards is more interesting. The PS5 DualSense controller can be updated with new firmware, and according to Reddit, this patch fixes the glitch associated with the battery charging indicator. It should now fill correctly once the USB-C cable has been plugged in. If any more hidden features are discovered, we'll be sure to report them back to you.

21.01-03.20.00.04-00.00.00.0.0?
Methinks someone has gone a bit overboard with the revision number.
Just call it 3.20 or 3.2
Still no m.2 support. You’re killing us, Sony.
I don't like to moan about this all the time but I find it irritating that I have to plug in the controller each time there is a update for it Well I got 4 controller's to which doesn't help I guess
Just update my ps5 (and dualsense) before I turn it off, it's just a minor update I think.
@sanderson72 Yup the ps4 firmware number naming system is better, version 1, 1,2, 2.0, etc.
@Carl-G
It takes about 10 seconds, man up! 😅
@sanderson72 Actually interesting, there is a good chance that the number includes a date/time stamp, lots of generated build numbers do The 21 for example may refer to this year. I wonder if we can glean from this how long Sony’s internal test cycle is
@Mega-Gazz If that's true, this should have dropped in Jan!
Still no mention of super-sampling support? C'mon, Sony you've had a Pro that's done it for years...?
@The_New_Butler I noticed that too. When you go into your game library it used to be your collection first and then installed. Now it's the other way around.
Hopefully battery life will be fixed too.
I do love a firmware update. Now, about those folders…
@Carl-G First world problem much? Literally only takes around 15-20 seconds for each controller.
It’ll never change to wifi based updating for controllers.
Praying I wasn't mid-run on Returnal before I went to bed last night...
@Carl-G I find it fun, like feeding a litter of cubs or pups
@Carl-G
I feel your pain. I have a third controller paired with my PC. Every time one of these updates occur, I have to unpair the controller from my PC and then plug it into the PS5, which pairs the controller to the PS5 instead. I learned the first time that Windows 10 sucks and won't recognize the same controller being paired again, so that is why I have to unpair the controller first while Windows 10 still recognizes it.
@mcxcvi_ "It’ll never change to wifi based updating for controllers"
Xbox has wireless updating on the xbox one. Seems a bit archaic for Sony to still have wired based updating on their 9th gen console.
@Richnj I honestly don’t care that it has to be plugged in. I’m just glad they are fixing issues and upgrading features.
@AgentGuapo Yeah I love updates. People today don't know they're born etc!
@Richnj Safer to update when you're plugged-in as the controller is being fed power the whole time. Not sure I'd trust wireless updates but I suppose it's a very minor risk.
@SJBUK wired updating is still an option.

The point is you have the option to do it your way.
@AgentGuapo I could make all sorts of points if I presented them in reductive fashions.
'I don't care if Sony haven't unlocked the second SSD slot, I'm just glad I can still use the first one"
@AgentGuapo hopefully soon , but its going to be expensive , i don't know if i'll upgrade right away or wait
@The_New_Butler I noticed that as well and got confused as I had not updated the console.
Now I have "installed" as the first option and the alphabetical order maintained itself even after leaving the menu.
@Carl-G You have to charge it eventually anyway, right?
Why don't they just release bloody release notes.. LOL
Hopefully it'll fix the CE-108255-1 error. I've sent my PS5 off twice because of this issue and the replacement I was sent on the second attempt also had the same issue and is currently being shipped to them for another repair.
@Richnj I would expect you could, wasn't a dig at XBox. My way would be wired, so am supremely unfussed
@stormyuk Totally agree! It's not like it's hard to automate that sort of thing so I guess it's a political decision.
Started getting strange connection issues I've never had before downloading the update. Trying to play a game gives me the "Can't download your saved data CE-116799-3" error. Waiting a bit will get rid of it but if a game needs to connect to PSN it just won't. I did my connection tests and restarted the PS5 multiple times.
I just managed to get into Final Fantasy XIV now but I hope it doesn't stay a recurring thing, so far I found the PS5's wifi to be fickle and die quite easily for some reason.
@TheTinfoilTitan which game or all games? Not all CE-108255-1 crashes mean hardware failure.
Hope it fixes error code NP-103374-8 (trophy synchronization not working) that happens randomly with some PS4 games.

@stormyuk Eurogamer has them...

Thanks @VanguardKaiser looks like they are actually on the Sony site too. Cheers 👍
VRR pretty please.
@stormyuk all games, ps5 or ps4, disk or download on my first ps5, it would crash after about 3 hours give or take. Second one was all ps5 games
@TheTinfoilTitan yeh I get it on odd games but, that does sound not too good. Cyberpunk (used to) crash a lot as does Elite Dangerous but, on the flip side games like Astro, AC: Valhalla and Miles Morales have never crashed.
Library looks cleaner especially if you are using an external storage device. I'll take it!
@TheTinfoilTitan mine just started throwing networking errors left and right. Got so fed up, I did a complete reinstall of the whole OS last night. If this doesn’t fix it, I’m throwing my PS5 out the window.
Playing fifa21 after today's update, mid game ..black screen and said no hdmi source found. Turned tv on and off and was ok??
Does it improve the availability?
Don't know if it's related, but my PS5 isn't working at all right now. I can boot up safe mode but short of completely wiping it, I'm not sure what to do.
On hold right now with technical support...
Is it just me or the “installed” and “your collection” tabs have been swapped in the game library menu ?
@Spoonman-2 10 seconds is a small price to pay for the greatest controller ever made!
@frabbit @stormyuk Gotta turn those auto system updates and auto game updates off. (Just leave the options yo download them on.) I learned the hard way in Returnal ...
My Top 5 Most Wanted PS5 System Features:
5. NVMe SSD support (I've been making it work by juggling games)
4. App folders (I have a heavy need for organization & order)
3. YouTube app update to support 8K video
2. "Quick Resume" feature (the thing about Series X i am most jealous about)
1. VRR support (smooth out those imperfect framerates)
@Richnj not quite as archaic as supplying AA batteries though
@Beefy01 funnily enough, AA have meant I've not used an xbox pad wired up since the 360 days. Where as I have usb extension cables running from my PS3 and PS4.
Does it introduce a save function for Returnal?
Why are some people saying this update is crashing their console? That's not good...😠
