Another month, another substantial update for No Man's Sky — at least it feels that way at the moment. Hello Games has now revealed the third major update coming to its space explorer this year alone, with the headline addition being a graphical overhaul for the entire game. There are so many improvements included in the free update available right now on PlayStation 5 and PS4 that Sean Murray felt the need to list all 21 of them over on the PlayStation Blog.
New styles of volumetric lighting, reworked warp effects, improved rain effects and torch visuals. It has the lot! Areas such as the Space Station Core have been given a new coat of paint, lots of creatures now have fur, and Photo Mode has been updated to accommodate all these visual changes. Perhaps one of the coolest additions is the ability to take to the skies with flyable mounts. "Low-flying creatures, such as giant beetles and flying worms, can now be adopted as your companion. Mount up and enjoy a whole new perspective on planetary exploration."
If you want to check all 21 of the new No Man's Sky enhancements, we recommend heading over to the PlayStation Blog for the complete list. There's a lot to take in, especially if you're a seasoned veteran who has kept up with the game since launch nearly five years ago. Are you going to head back into No Man's Sky to check out this new update? Let us know in the comments below.

Hmm, I might have to jump into this again. Always found it mildly confusing so always stalled on it but maybe if I just ignore the story and play it like a sandbox I'll enjoy it more.
Volumetric lighting is the unsung hero of open world visuals. Makes such a huge difference.
@Iroha Play the new expedition mode. Its a more streamlined experience and gives you a fair amount of stuff to start with and when it ends it just converts to a normal save, so you can do all the things you would normally do anyway
I got the platinum a week after the original release (and quite enjoyed it tbh, despite all the negativity). I bet it’s a completely different game now. If they added a new trophy list, I’d definitely revisit it.
Have they made it easier to pull together the stuff you need to fuel the warp engines yet? Because that was my main gripe and has long been the one thing keeping me from getting back into it.
It was cool at first, finding A and B to make C, and D, E, and F to make G, then combining C and G to get H, and so on... but it very quickly began to grate, as it just felt like unnecessary busywork, and got in the way of enjoying the exploration.
I was told that you could enable a mode added a while after release to disable that, but that it also disabled trophies. Is that still the case?
I've held off long enough for it to come to PS PLUS now... pretty please! I have it on GAME PASS via my Series S, but I just know it's not as pretty as it could be on PS5
Can't wait to dig back in. Recently started replaying this game and it's improved so much it's virtually unrecognisable.
Will be continuing my journey through the galaxy with these new visual effects.
I tried playing this on my PC w/ Gamepass and my PC was like "Yeah, no." Can't imagine this update would make it go any smoother.
To be fair my PC did finally get it going once I lowered the resolution to something 1980's and turned off all the effects but then I died of radiation poisoning in like 5 minutes so...😝
I was so obsessed with this game that I'm reluctant to jump back in as I'm trying to work through my backlog. Not played it for months now but I can feel it calling me lol
I "completed" this back when it first came out. Revisited it after getting a PS5, and it's practically a different game now - they've changed and it extended it so much. I've played nearly 200 hours of it since then, and I'm looking forward to seeing these new visual enhancements
Haven't played in a while. Does it still have terrible pop in?
I got this at release and it just lost me after 10 hours. I had nothing against it, just didn’t think it was for me but all of these updates have me curious to try it again.
@Wolfie_Pie I totally agree. To me, NMS will only ever be a VR game. I just can't imagine playing it in regular mode. But as much as I love it, it looks pretty terrible on the OG PSVR nowadays so if it comes to PSVR2, I'm buying it right away.
@The_New_Butler Seconded! Although a quick Google shows that Push Square re-reviewed the PS5 version in Dec last year I don’t think it was through the lens of a new player

But you make a good general point that some, not all, live service games literally change their very foundations during their lifetime and the original review code, and scores, are not a fair judge.
Games like No Man’s Sky, Warframe, Destiny 2, Genshin impact are all either very different from their original review code or have a lot more or more or refined content than at launch. As a new player it would be great to have a way of seeing what state they are in for new players to jump into now
One of these days, I’m going to give the game an authentic try. I’ve started it maybe three or four times and just haven’t gotten anywhere with it
The game that keeps giving, was abit empty and janky when first released but dam have they improved this.
Maybe after update 3 or 4 they can do a new game sort of the same but full rpg action, proper space battles battles for resources, change eco system of entire planets, make colony, ship people around help thrive on new planets
If not for playing Subnautica right now, I’d be tempted to reboot this. Outside of a brief peek into the NEXT update a while ago, I haven’t really played it since launch. I think I’ll have to start over with as many changes it’s made.
I'm honestly happy for Hello Games. They redeemed themselves for sure!
I am just waiting for an update that improves fauna designs
@fR_eeBritney I'm the same haven't played since I plat-ed it years ago and it looks very complicated now.
@NateGoesLive What does it look like on the Series S?
@Th3solution if you haven't played it since launch they added a ton of content , and changes to the game , it will be like a different game when you boot it up.
Got the platinum on this few years back when it was less.....complicated. the amount of overlapping systems nowadays, and the game is just way more busywork to do. NO.
What a great success story no mans sky is. Never thought I’d have said that in the early days.
@Paranoimia They streamlined getting fuel years back. If you want god mode though just play Creative Mode but yes the Trophies are disabled in that.
I might go back and have a look but not really got anything more to do in the game really. Unless I am missing something Done the odd story mode and got all the Trophies but then found myself just doing nothing really which is a shame because I LOVED flying around etc etc. Oh well.

Seriously, this team does the most beautiful release notes ever
I love this game, Completely passed me by until a few months ago until I got it on Steam. Doesn't run brilliantly on my PC (Ryzen 2600, RX 580, SSD) but looks pretty good.
Got it for PS5 a bit later and wow, blows my PC out of the water. Loads much faster, look stunning on a 65inch TV and sound is great through the surround sound.
Done most things on the PC but will go and do it all again on the PS5. If you've got it but not played for a while, check out Expeditions.
It's a small thing, but having the starry night sky now is spectacular.
@frankmcma I actually get really excited about reading them, its like that feeling of opening presents at Xmas and seeing what goodies i'm getting.
@fR_eeBritney plays games when there are new trophies or skips it when not??? Seriously dude think about it. I mean its your thing but that is just stupid to me sorry...
Booted it up yesterday, love the little changes to warping, space stations, lighting 😎 My base is set up to make warp fuel right at my launch pad 🙂 then hydroponics grow all the components to make living glass that sells for a fair amount 🙂
