Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he's found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.
Went Ratchet, Mass Effect, and persona 5 strikers. Shout out to Outriders as well. Solid year so far even though none of those I would truly consider a GOTY type of game.
Been enjoying the games I've played so far this year (and have definitely missed a few crackers, too!). I would pick Hitman 3, MLB The Show 21, and Knockout City as my personal faves I think.
Resident Evil Village for me, a really good entry in the series and Hitman 3 is excellent, especially if you have the first 2 to add to it. I'm just about to start Yakuza Like a Dragon and have just started Metro Exodus which looks outstanding with its RT GI
I went with Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, RE Village & Little Nightmares 2, but I also loved the Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Persona 5 Strikers. Unfortunately I have yet to play Returnal due to just not having to time to do so, I may even invite some mates over and make a day of it..
Easy, Returnal! It's the game I've sunk so many hours into and platinumed and still can't help but play it. Ratchet and Clank would be second because that's pretty damn good too.
Really enjoying Biomutant. It’s a quirky little thing but quite addictive once you get into it.
Although... I’ve played about 20 hours so far and I still haven’t figured out what I’m supposed to be doing with all these weapon parts and scrap I’ve been collecting.
But... I’m still having a blast without it so I’ll just carry on 🤷
I think Ratchet is my favourite so far though it is a tight call with Resi Village, the PS5 version of Control was excellent and I loved every minute of it (I didn't get round to it on PS4).
I went Yakuza, Persona 5 Strikers and Resident Evil Village. I'm loving Ratchet, but i feel @get2sammyb was right in his review when he says it just feels like more ratchet compared to taking any major risks (not that this is always a bad thing).
Resident Evil was just pure fun and put together so well. Yakuza has tried something new with its turn based combat, and Persona 5 Strikers did the impossible and got me invested in a warriors style game.
Good year so far i think. Looking forward to playing FF7R episode intermission soon, and then Kena, World Ends with You, Life is Strange, Sonic Colours, Lost Judgment, Psychonauts 2, Hades and hopefully Horizon Forbidden West still to come 😀
Returnal. Reached the last biome last night and almost completed it but then died, so close that Plat I can feel it. Waiting on my disc of Disco Elysium then that I'm sure will be right up there too.
Voted for Judgment although currently playing on PS4. Played Outriders and it was OK but not a patch on Judgment. One of the best games I have played for a while so can't imagine much on the list beating it. Obviously that is just my opinion rather than a fact.
Still have yet to start INTERmission, but I’m fully expecting it to have the potential to bump Returnal. Chicory could do the same as well. Three 9/10 games in 2021 already is a good first half of the year in my book.
Mass Effect, Nier Replicant and Narita Boy. Even though I played the ME trilogy and Nier day and date on their original releases, they still wipe the floor with most new games.
Narita Boy is just brilliant. I played it on game pass and then bought it on PS4 to support the devs. Absolute gem of a game!
Well it's returnal for me, not much else tbh, have got resi but haven't played it yet only few hrs and not been in the mood for it. Haven't finished like a dragon either got bored of it towards the end so didn't finish it. Only just got disco Elysium but yet to finish it again not in the mood for it but looks like a great game. Think I need to stop buying games for a while and just force myself to finish some games, think just having disposal income sometimes makes you just buy games on a whim, where 10 years ago when I didn't have much money coming in I played everything I bought before buying anything new, and these playstation store sales don't help lol, first world problems I know lol,
Returnal for me and a few PS5 editions of games: Wreckfest, THPS 1+2, and Control. Destruction AllStars gets an honourable mention, I really did enjoy my time with it. I haven't played R&C yet though. I'm sure it would be close to or at the top of my list.
Tough to say definitively because there are many games on this list that I'm excited about but I haven't tried yet, but of the games I have played I would have to say: 1. Ratchet & Clank 2. MLB The Show 21 3. Wreckfest
1. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
3. Resident Evil: Village
And an honorable mention to Returnal.
Stated it plenty of times before but at just near the halfway point PS5 has already had a stellar first year that eclipses what the PS4 and even PS3 had. Considering how both those consoles finished their respective generations, to think PS5 hasn't even scratched the surface yet of what this console will offer is crazy.
Ratchet & Clank is incredible, but Returnal is a brilliant kick to the nuts in terms of addictive gameplay. Picked Resident Evil as well cause I just love the series and this was a great entry.
Out of that list i only played Nier Replicant. But it's easily one of my favorite games ever. Great cast of characters, fun gameplay loop even if there's a lot of backtracking. The phenomenal soundtrack made the backtrack so much less painful
I plan to get P5S really soon tho and i already have SMT Nocturne but won't play it just yet. Really looking forward to both of them too
BALAN WONDERWOR.....
(I realize that's tantamount to blasphemy and cussing around these parts, please don't ban me) 😅
I'd have to say Ratchet and Clank because of:
1. I've really enjoyed previous R&C games in the past
2. It's the only game thus far that has really made me want to get a PS5... in fact, very tempted to do so, but $2,500 Barbados dollars is not an easy pill to swallow.
3. Reading the cool stuff the game does with the DualSense haptics (it plays freaking music!) has not made it any easier (thanks for that, @get2sammyb)
I honestly thought nothing could beat Returnal, but then Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart came along and wow, what a game. Now I’m thinking nothing can beat that. That’s unless Forbidden West drops this year. Then all bets are off.
Not much grabbing me from that list to be honest. Most of the great games in there I had played on previous gen. Ratchet & Clank looks pretty, but also owning a Switch, gameplay-wise I don't think it challenges the big N's offering (they're really the kings of platformers).
I'm not in Roguelike games (altough I did try Hades on Switch and enjoyed it a bit, dropped it quite quickly) so paying 70 for a game I would quickly abandon is not something I'm looking to do.
Resident Evil Village looks great, enjoyed the 2 demos, so I might get that one a bit later.
Ratchet & Clank is amazing it has the best visuals of any game currently and it introduces some new mechanics well plus has a great story.
With that being said, Returnal is THE best PS5 game currently. Nothing else feels quite like it when you play it, it has the best 3D audio and Dualsense implementation for a game so far. The alien designs are superb, bullet hell effects, the house segments blending the first-person with third. A puzzling but fascinating story. A truly unique experience.
The gameplay is on another level, when I’m playing Ratchet I feel like I’m playing Returnal in slow motion. Just my opinion though.
Metro definitely belongs on here. I've not picked up Ratchet yet, and Returnal and ResE aren't really my bag, but Hitman 3 definitely deserves more votes than it has. Really good use of haptics, and a truly solid game.
@AndyKazama I bought Nier Replicant last week and am 7 hours in. I was enjoying it for the first 2 hours but the past 5ish hours have been rougher than I’d bargained for with monotony.
Reviews mentioned the monotony but honestly I disregarded that b/c people said the same about Automata and I didn’t find Automata to be very monotonous.
1. Resident Evil Village 2. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart 3. Little Nightmares 2
Tough decision to make because I have played so many great games this year so far including Metro Exodus, Control Ultimate Edition, Marvel's Avengers, Judgment, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Crash Bandicoot 4, ect.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition for me. It was amazing back in the day and it's amazing now. Back when I loved Bioware. I wish they made Dragon Age Legendary edition. Also I really hope they won't screw up the new Mass Effect and the 4th Dragon Age.
Hmmm same survey with PS5 exclusives, are there even 3 games? I love my PS5 but only for the load times and Returnal. Other than that, could easily have stayed with PS4
@djdizzy did you play the original? Replicant 2021 is essentially the 2010 Japanese PS3 version with nicer graphics and localised into English.
There's a great gdc talk where Yoko Taro talks about he knew the limitations of the game due to budget and how he tricked the player into thinking the game is bigger.
I admit there's a lot of nostalgia for my decision, however I'll take great stories like this over anything that game out this year.
Not including PS4 versions of games listed in the poll, I have only played P5 Strikers so far this year. Definitely a few on here, that I would like to buy and play, but have not gotten around to it yet.
It would of been Miles Morales but it wasnt in the list for some reason, but returnal is decent even if I can't complete the second biome because its so difficult and ratchet and clank is just so pretty even if its a little empty.
I've bought more games this year than I've ever bought in that time frame. Haven't gotten any games on that list though 😊.
As the UK is now considered as outside Europe, I've been enjoying duty free shopping on Amazon UK for the last 6 months. Any product after UK tax is subtracted where the value less than €22 is tax free if you are importing into Europe. It's coming to an end this month though. PS4 games are mostly discounted and I've been buying them up big time.
From the list I'd like ratchet and clank and RE. It'll be a few years before I get them though.
Despite sinking 90 hours into it and still struggling with Fractured Wastes I chose Returnal simply because it plays so damn well, has incredible use of sound and haptic feedback and surely must be doing a lot right to keep me coming back for more after being mercilessly slaughtered time and time again.
Otherwise I’d have to choose Ratchet and Clank despite it only lasting a day before the Platinum. Nonetheless it looked utterly gorgeous and was a joy from start to finish.
As for third place I’d probably say Biomutant as, despite the criticism, I lived my time with the game and felt it truly did wonders at times with its exploration and world building. Hopefully the subsequent patches will lead to more people taking the plunge and picking up this little gem of a game.
Returnal by far is my fave. When else does a platform holder invest AAA budget or at least focus on a hardcore 'roguelike' title like this? For that reason alone all my fellow Sony boys should laud it
Guilty Gear is my unexpected love this year. Haven’t played a fighting game since Tekken 3 and although I regularly get my butt handed to me - it is a joy to play. Learning, practicing combos. Really is true with this game that the more training you put in, the more you get out of it. Only been playing since Friday but already can see the improvements. Just wish there was something more to work towards than just winning all the time, like; new characters etc. Or new moves. Maybe there is more to it. Either way, loving it! And Chivalry II for that matter. Recently got For Honor and excited to get into the 60fps goodness on PS5.
Either way, a load of games with steep; steep learning curves.
I’ve never played the original, I’m new to Nier. I just heard about Automata for the first time a few months ago, so playing through Automata was my introduction. A mind-blowing introduction at that.
It being a PS3 gen game and Yoko Atari having to work with a small budget explains a lot though. I’m going to stick with it and adjust my expectations. Play the game on its own terms.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition PS4 playing on a PS5. Honorable mentions are:
Outriders PS5;
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart PS5;
Bravely Default 2 Nintendo Switch. Really awesome year for gaming so far and were just in the middle. Can´t wait to see what else there is in store for gamers. Cheers, stay safe good people and happy gaming to us all

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. No denial.
Guilty Gear, Mass Effect, and Disco Elysium for me. Good year so far!
1 - Ratchet and Clank
2 - FF VII PS5 Upgrade
3 - Returnal
Some other great ones there too though.
Resident Evil Village for me, a really good entry in the series and Hitman 3 is excellent, especially if you have the first 2 to add to it. I'm just about to start Yakuza Like a Dragon and have just started Metro Exodus which looks outstanding with its RT GI

But... I’m still having a blast without it so I’ll just carry on 🤷
I haven’t played many of any of these games. I’m currently working through Hollow Knight/Wreckfest and Warzone
I think Ratchet is my favourite so far though it is a tight call with Resi Village, the PS5 version of Control was excellent and I loved every minute of it (I didn't get round to it on PS4).
@fR_eeBritney Yeah, Biomutant was horribly underrated IMO. Especially by this site.
Resident Evil, Ratchet and Clank, Guilty Gear
Easy for me, but there are more games on this list than I though there would be.
It Takes Two! hands down. Then RE Village, I have not really played anything else new though so I guess my vote does not mean much
It takes two is the only game that sprang immediately to mind (haven’t played Rift Apart yet).
Control and Operation Tango are the only games I have played from the list. Loved and platinumed both.
I went Yakuza, Persona 5 Strikers and Resident Evil Village. I'm loving Ratchet, but i feel @get2sammyb was right in his review when he says it just feels like more ratchet compared to taking any major risks (not that this is always a bad thing).

Definitely Resident Evil Village.
Mass Effect, Ratchet and Clank and Returnal.
1. RE Village
2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
3. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Ghost of Tsushima, Control, and Miles Morales. I'm always (fashionably) late to the party.
Haven’t got Ratchet yet but have no doubt it would on my list if I had it!
1. Returnal
2. Disco Elysium
3. It Takes Two
I enjoyed RE Village a lot but it just lacked some heart or something, that I felt my top 3 had.
I am LOVING Metro Exodus PS5 upgrade and probably would have had that if it was available for selection.
Returnal. Most addictive gameplay I've experienced in years.
I’ve probably done more gaming during this opening 6 months of 2021 than I ever have… not one of the games I’ve played were released in 2021 though 😔.
Mass effect 14 years later still great noting else ive played this year has even come close
Returnal for me and a few PS5 editions of games: Wreckfest, THPS 1+2, and Control. Destruction AllStars gets an honourable mention, I really did enjoy my time with it. I haven't played R&C yet though. I'm sure it would be close to or at the top of my list.
This is a 2 game race between Returnal and R&C.
Of the ones I've actually played probably Persona 5 Strikers since the rest were 2020 games or I got them on other platforms instead
Still have to play Ratchet
Tough to say definitively because there are many games on this list that I'm excited about but I haven't tried yet, but of the games I have played I would have to say:
1. Ratchet & Clank
2. MLB The Show 21
3. Wreckfest
Returnal! It’s the best ps5 exclusive imho having played all 4 of them - and really a hell of a game!
It Takes Two is hands down the best for me. Village and Strikers after that.
The Pedestrian, Disco Elysium and Hitman 3!
Nothing to choose from, so I picked Scott Pilgrim, because it is fun on my PS3.
This made me realize I’ve only bought 3 games this year…..
''siNgLe pLaYEer gAmEs aRe dYinG''
@djlard its a shame they butchered the remaster ; i hope it goes free really soon on PS Plus because the game is so good & deserves better .
Returnal and Disco Elysium for me. Both utterly incredible games and both benefit from being the only 2021 releases I’ve played so far too!
@Boucho11 Hollow Knight was one of my top 3 from the last gen. Wonderful game and one of those I wish I could play for the first time again.
@nessisonett Damn, I missed The Pedestrian off the list! Definitely one that more people should try.
Mass Effect Ledge Edition and Yakuza: Like A Dragon (even though I'm only on chapter 5).
Yeah, that's gonna be Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart... But a lot of great games, just not as good as that one..
Ratchet & Clank is incredible, but Returnal is a brilliant kick to the nuts in terms of addictive gameplay. Picked Resident Evil as well cause I just love the series and this was a great entry.
I think my favourite thus far is Returnal, but I also gave votes to It Takes Two and Ratchet. Lots of good stuff this year!
Metro exodus is really impressing me so far but slim pickings otherwise
Easily RnC and It Takes Two.
@Thrillho It totally blew me away. A simple concept really, but it never outstays its welcome and had a brilliant final puzzle.
For AAA games it's ratchet & clank rift apart, ff7 intergrade ps5 update, and resident evil village. For indie games: cyber shadow and narita boy.
I chose Balan Wonderworld, just because.
Mass Effect LE. It's the only one on that list that I have bought!
I'm getting real close to the end of ME 1, really good game. Nor sure if I will go straight into 2 once I've finished it or try something else.
Of the other games on that list my order of preference would be:
1 - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
2 - Resident Evil Village
3 - Returnal
The three 'R's'!
Really looking forward to both of them too
@ObeseChihuahua2 hahaha shouldn't even be an option!
Chicory and Ratchet and Clank, both great games, and I'm sad that Chicory is so underrated.
@Rob_230 Seen a few people come around to this the last few days! Great game, but there was some robust feedback to the review's 8/10 score. 😅
Hitman 3 by far.
Ratchet and Clank and Final Fantasy Remake next in line.
Very easy for me, Nier Replicant, Outriders and Ratchet and Clank!
There’s been nothing of note this year so far
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Returnal along with Oddworld Soulstorm.
Why no Astro's Playroom?
Disco Elysium
Judgement
Returnal
Metro exodus.
Its not on the list.
Who made it, Liam? Lol
I voted Balan Wonderworld 😎
But yeah Ratchet is obviously the number 1, followed by Returnal!
1. It Takes Two
2. Cyber Shadow
I'd have to say Ratchet and Clank, RE8 and Persona 5 Strikers.
FF7, Resident Evil Village and Ratchet & Clank for me.
Hitman 3 has been robbed!
Nier Replicant hands down. One of my favourite games remade for a new generation of gamers , with awesome additional content.
@get2sammyb How you guys gonna put Hood up there but leave out Chivalry 2? That has been so much fun to play and easily a great release this year.
@Rash Because that came out last year.
@ShogunRok great taste! Same choices as me...Guilty Gear Strive is incredible !!
Cold War not on the list? Did I miss it?
I honestly thought nothing could beat Returnal, but then Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart came along and wow, what a game. Now I’m thinking nothing can beat that. That’s unless Forbidden West drops this year. Then all bets are off.
@get2sammyb Haha 😄 dont you know you are meant to score all Playstation exclusives 15/10?
I think you were spot on with your score
@adrianthealchemist Always happy to help where Returnal is concerned 😁
@adrianthealchemist Great shout. I’d completely forgotten about Deathloop! Hope it’s as good as it looks.
@Thrillho @nessisonett Yeah, I had a great time with The Pedestrian. Probably my favourite indie this year so far.
@Jaz007 Oh right. Didn't catch the 2021. Thanks
Why can’t Abandoned be an option? I’d surely pick that one.
RE Village is easily my favourite game this so far with MH Rise taking 2nd place, Capcom are killing it right now.
Im new to playstation so my backlog is huge as hell. I voted for FF7R and Ratchet cause those are the only games I played that came out this year.
Village and R&C are pretty short. Bang for buck might be Returnal.
Guilty Gear strive and of course, Ratchet and Clank.
@Logonogo I'm pretty sure that there are like 4 people who adore the game scattered across the world.
Returnal, Returnal and Returnal.
Okay, I added in Ratchet & Clank and Star Wars.
I really want Guilty Gear, but I need a sale first.
Returnal. by a county mile!
1. Resident Evil Village
2. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
3. Little Nightmares 2
Tough decision to make because I have played so many great games this year so far including Metro Exodus, Control Ultimate Edition, Marvel's Avengers, Judgment, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Crash Bandicoot 4, ect.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil
Village, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition are by far the best games I’ve played on Playstation.
Out of all these games I've only played Hitman 3 and Subnautica: Below Zero, so that's where my votes went.
Hitman 3 really was stellar though. People are sleeping on it, tons of content as well.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition for me. It was amazing back in the day and it's amazing now. Back when I loved Bioware.
I wish they made Dragon Age Legendary edition.
Also I really hope they won't screw up the new Mass Effect and the 4th Dragon Age.
Where's Sackboy on the list? not saying its my favourite but surprised by its omission
1. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
2. NieR Replicant
3. RE Village
None unfortunately nothing released yet that I want to play, did get destruction all-stars and odd-world with PS+ but didn't like those.
@Blue_Rover that was a 2020 game.
Hmmm same survey with PS5 exclusives, are there even 3 games? I love my PS5 but only for the load times and Returnal. Other than that, could easily have stayed with PS4
@InvaderJim My bad...
Returnal easy #1 for me. Ratchet #2
I am disappointed in the pushsquare community though for not voting up Balan Wonderland to #1 just cause it was an option.
Village, Returnal and P5 Strikers for me. Lol at Balan Wonderworld on the list
For that reason alone all my fellow Sony boys should laud it
Returnal. That is one polished, next gen experience created with love.
Blizzard Arcade
I’ve never played the original, I’m new to Nier. I just heard about Automata for the first time a few months ago, so playing through Automata was my introduction. A mind-blowing introduction at that.
It being a PS3 gen game and Yoko Atari having to work with a small budget explains a lot though. I’m going to stick with it and adjust my expectations. Play the game on its own terms.
