Make sure your copy of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is fully up to date when it arrives next week because the day one patch will include an extra mode that allows you to run the game at 60 frames-per-second with ray tracing activated. In a very similar vein to what Insomniac did with PlayStation 5 launch title Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you will be able to lower the resolution slightly to achieve those super shiny reflections while keeping the frame rate at a steady 60.
The initial update will also patch in a dedicated performance mode, which will further solidify those 60 frames-per-second, but you won't have access to ray tracing, of course. The developer has posted a quick clip of what Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks like with ray tracing enabled at the fabled frame rate, which you can check out below.
Whilst responding to fans on Twitter, Insomniac said it achieves all this by using "a dynamic base resolution that then goes through our temporal injection process to achieve a 4K image". As previously mentioned, the team has already done this once before with Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but the feature was added after launch. We put the mode through a quick test back then, and while the resolution was indeed a little lower, we thought it was a worthwhile trade-off. Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered was then also treated to the mode.
Which mode will you select when you play Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart? Quality mode, performance mode, or 60 frames-per-second with ray tracing? Make your choice in the comments below.

60 fps with Ray tracing. Most people won't even notice the difference in slight resolution drop. I didn't.
Im ready for this, sucks it will be the last actual PS5 game for a few years.
Heres hoping other devs can do this in their games too..control would be so cool if they could patch in a similar work around..
Do we know when the review embargo ends?
Thank you Insomniac! I'll use the 60fps with ray tracing included. I wasn't able to use it for Spider-Man Miles Morales because by the time the patch arrived I already had the platinum trophy. I wish more developers gave us the choice to have 60fps with ray tracing included for a slightly lower resolution. (Looking at you Control & Watch Dogs Legion)
@AdamNovice I heard it's Tuesday
This is great news. I Hate to choose but if I have to its Framerate over ray-tracing every time. 60fps with ray-tracing.... lovely. Thanks Insomniac.
Thats the best combo for me. It could be 1080p for all i care as long as it has the sweet raytracing at 60fps.
@AdamNovice In less than three days
This was amazing with Miles Morales. It will totally be the way I play R&C.
Mode of my choice. Every game should trade that native 4k Res 30fps gameplay for dlss like 60fps with max visuals.
Edit. Unless you have 8K 70 inch TV, the resolution drop will be very hard to spot.
Watch and learn other devs, watch and learn!
DELIGHTED about this. 60 makes so much more of a difference than a higher resolution, for me at least. Glad I won't have to sacrifice Ray Tracing to enjoy it! Hope more studios implement this option!
Nice, I want 60 fps and RT, I'm okay with minimum 1080p resolutions
Edit: Already preordered the physical edition, can't wait for june 11.
Framerate over resolution anyday.
Like both Spiderman games I will go with the standard Performance mode, it gives me the best resolution with the best framerate. I have a big tv so I unfortunately can't sacrifice too much resolution for Ray-tracing.
@OmegaStriver That statement might age badly in a few weeks.
Excellent. Always nice to have the options.
I'll probably just go with the Performance Mode myself as I found the Spiderman MM 'Performance RT' mode to take too much of a hit graphically.
Was 1440p-1080p with lots of lowered graphical settings like crowd density and 1/4 res ray traced reflections. Looked like a PS4 Pro game.
1080p, 60fps, Ray tracing with all the bells and whistles should be the standard moving forward imo.
I'm sure 4k is lovely for those who want or prefer it and have the tech but I'm just a filthy casual with a 1080 set
@AdamNovice I think 8 june
Got to be the 60 with RT. It was great with Spider-Man so should be just as good with R&C. The action is always fast paced so I’d be really surprised if anyone could tell the difference in actual game play.
This will be the mode for me, 60 fps with raytracing all the way!
@OmegaStriver For a few years says who, you? Certainly didn’t come from Sony. You honestly think GoW, Horizon, and GT7 will be the only exclusives released in the next 3 years?
This is what I appreciate the most of these next-gen (or are they current-gen now?) consoles.
If I can only get one, give me performance over pixel count ...
Shame that mode isn't on the disc, physical games are getting more worthless every year sadly
Do we know how big the day one patch is?
@uptownsoul Technically Returnal used RT at 60 fps, but not for reflections (and I suppose its usage in R&C will be more noticeable in general).
@DeepSpace5D Well... Those are cross gen games. I'm assuming he means ONLY PS5, designed and developed to run only on the next gen system.
@DeepSpace5D GoW, Horizon and GT7 are not ps5 exclusives? I think that's the point he/she is making
@Floki Read it again. I know those are crossgen games, that’s why I asked if he honestly thinks those will be the only exclusives to release in the next 3 years, as if there won’t be next-gen Only exclusives as well in that timeframe.
For reference, we have gotten 5 next-gen only titles so far within the first 6 months of the console.
@MatthewJP Bruh, you guys gotta read better. See above. Will those be the ONLY exclusives released from Sony in the next 3 years? Anyone who thinks that is delusional.
@DeepSpace5D
He's probably saying that because Sony hasn't really announced much of anything coming as a PS5 exclusive yet. Obviously there's going to be exclusives in the future and hopefully Sony gives us more information about what those games might be sooner rather than later.
Though I bet their priority right now is making sure that everyone who wants a PS5 has one.
I LOVE that it gives you the option to dip resolution to prioritize ray-tracing and framerate. As a 1080p TV owner with no current plans to upgrade, I feel like I'll still be able to have the full PS5 experience with titles that allow me to customize the experience to fit my hardware and needs, like I would on a PC.
@ATaco You gotta admit though, it’s a pretty silly thing to assume that Ratchet is the last next-gen exclusive for the PS5 until 2024 just because they haven’t announced their lineup yet.
It goes against logic when there is already plenty of next-gen only content available and the PS5 has barely been out 6 months.
It also goes directly against what Hermen Hulst said in the same interview where he revealed that GoW and GT7 were crossgen. He said that it’s important to not forget the 110 million PS4 owners for certain titles, but that it’s also important to create next-gen only content for PS5 owners such as Returnal and Ratchet & Clank.
@DeepSpace5D I think everyone with a PS5 hopes you are right but the possibility you are wrong was the point of the "Did Sony lie?" article the other day. Mentioning the two games that we all know about doesn't do much to make me a believer. I don't think it will be completely dry of exclusives for two years, but maybe a drought.
So Horizon comes out, is the best-looking game on any console, has a bunch of exclusive features not capable on PS4, but PS5 doesn't have a TRUE exclusive because its devs ported it to PS4 as well?
Let me get this straight, devs do a GOOD thing and not leave players who literally can't upgrade out in the cold (GT7 for example was decided later to port PS4 likely due to covid and PS5 scarcity) and we ridicule them with obnoxious definitions like not a "true" exclusive and call Sony liars when it's literally on a game by game basis how long PS4 is supported? I expected more from the staff here tbh than to run with this silly narrative that just drives clicks.
@Omnistalgic You need to lower your expectations.
@tselliot I don’t know, that’s pretty low expectations already. You thinks it’s going to be worse?
Performance RT Mode on the Spiderman games look amazing, so this will be great no doubt
@tselliot If 5 next-gen titles in the first 6 months doesn’t make you a believer that there will continue to be next-gen only games on the PS5, then you simply just need to wait for the next PS5 showcase. If there’s any kind of “drought” it will be for a span of months, not years.
Oh boy this will be my first game with 60fps and RT can't wait
I haven't played it yet but is it too early to say that I'm in love?! Lol
I’ll probably go with this third option, although I might do Quality mode. If the 30fps is stable with no dips, then I probably will feel fine with that if it looks a little crisper and shinier on my 4K TV
@tselliot This is pretty much on par with how the PS4's first year was. The difference being that 2020 was one bad dream of a year. We have to account for that when we worry about wether Sony lied or not.
Wizards!
@Omnistalgic Unless I've missed something, I don't think anyone on staff has said that? There was an article that posed the question to readers, but that was a discussion point for people to share their own opinion.
Eh, I'll play around with the settings. If I can get 60fps with 1440p by trading in ray tracing it's fine by me!
God I hope this game is good. The 2016 one is so bad and lifeless. Easley the worst game in the series.
@Total_Weirdo dude, I don't know. The last one was really bad. Here's hoping this one is decent
@Envy To be fair the movie contrained them to a terrible story and awful chatacterization of Ratchet, Clank, Qwark and pretty much everybody. And If I recall correctly, I think the development of the 2016 entry was...quite rushed. Rift Apart looks to be definitely closer to A Crack in Time than 2016.
@Katsuhono I really hope so. I just don't want to see a another lifeless game like the 2016 game. I just want fun combat, that's all I'm really asking for in this new game.
@Octane Miles Morales was dynamic 1440p at 60 fps with raytracing so there’s a good chance you can have all 3.
Ray tracing for me. No idea what the guy at the top is talking about, last PS5 game for a few years? hardly. Not sure why such a stupid comment got likes at all tbh but whatever 🙄
@Envy That's your opinion.
@Northern_munkey Absolutely. Was a bit disappointed to know I had to pick between raytracing and 60fps. I don't mind if it's only 1080p if I can get both.
@Katsuhono Indeed, 2016 was developed in about 10 months, starting in early 2014 shortly after Nexus released. It was developed so quickly to be ready for the film's original 2015 release, but when that was pushed back a year, they held on to it until then.
The development time wasn't that much shorter than the previous games to be fair, but the next gen jump always causes an increase in dev time and budget to keep up with the tech, so it was quite impressive there.
@OmegaStriver pc games have been like this for decades and why true that a game like ratchet and clank would only work as intended on the ps5,games like ragnarok and hzd fw will be best played on the new generation, higher textures ,RT ,60fps and faster loading add greatly to the experience.
@RubyCarbuncle wouldn't really call it a opinion if it's the truth. I know so many people who also thought of the same thing. My best friend who's been a fan of the series for almost 18 years hated 2016 R&C
Whats the update size for this?
As long as it's a rock solid 60 fps I'll be happy regardless.
@eagletrippin go birds!!
@AdamNovice Right before Pushsquare gives it an 8.
@Waffles12415 You know it! Fly 'til I die!
I don’t know why but I tend to notice resolution over frame rate and Ray tracing. I didn’t really notice much of a difference with the ray tracing turned on in Spiderman and everything seems to look smooth to me even when it’s 30 frames per second so I’m probably not gonna use this feature
So excited for this game been a fan of R&C since PS2. I wished Jak & Daxter we’re still around. Can only imagine J&D getting this type of treatment like Rift Apart that be insane.
@Ralizah exactlty, people go on about resolution as if it's the most important thing in gaming. My PC is hooked up to a 4K tv and a 1080p 144hz monitor and the monitor gets far more use. Always good to have options and the PS5 has the power to give those
@Total_Weirdo You'll no doubt need to wait for the inevitable PS5 Pro for that.
@RubyCarbuncle It's because some PS5 owners have become self-entitled brats, that's why.
Apparently HZD and God of War, despite being developed first for PS4, should ONLY release on PS5 but because they're not, that means each title will turn out to be utter *****.
As for R&C. It looks absolutely gorgeous and great fun. What a shame us PS4 peasants won't get to play it. Oh well, maybe in 2022 or 2023 at this rate. Of course we can't give in to the scalpers and pay over the RRP, that would be disgusting.*
🙄
*Not that I want to BUT my PS4 is starting to make some really weird noises and crashing more than usual. I think it's dying and I may need to act fast.
I had an update for Ratchet & Clank yesterday is this the update or is there actually another coming on Friday?
@hoffa007 according to their replies on Twitter, it’s the update. That doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be another though.
If its like Miles then it should be the only mode. Other modes are completely unnecessary. The people crying about no native 4k would be the same ones trolling about 30fps in that mode anyway.
Edit
It also reconstructs 4k with their own tech so DF zooming in to find a missing pixel is just as pointless as bragging about DLSS and FSR and then make a UTurn on 'its the clarity that matters not resolution".
@Arugula "it's a fact that a lot of PS5 adopters are feeling a little alienated by Sony's cross-generation decisions"
Why though?
They are still getting HFW and GoW, and they also getting stuff that PS4 owners aren't getting, like Demon's Souls, Returnal, and R&C.
To feel alienated, you have to be left out. PS5 owners are not getting left out.
@blinx01 If you made the ps4pro do exactly the same game as the ps5 version of Spider-Man, it would absolutely crawl. 5-10fps? But if you let it take the time it needed it could and would generate image quality similar to ps5. Except the ps5 belts it along at 60fps. With newly added ML suit/body interaction. The crowd density was cut a little. The streets are still heaving. I don’t understand your not appreciating the new formats capabilities.
@Arugula Well early adoption is always like this.
1) You run the risk of the system failing. I know, I use to be an early adopter, and I bought the Wii U, but rather than complain, I just have to make sure I enjoyed the product as much as I could.
And 2) your options on what to play is normally always limited. You normally spend much of your time play a handful of exclusive titles because the system itself hasn't built up a native library yet, and if you are lucky, mixed in with cross gen titles and BC. This has always been my experience.
Point is, early adoption usually comes with the expectation that you are making an investment for the future. Look back at the last gen. PS4 first year titles included AC4, Battlefield 4, COD Ghosts, Fifa 14, Destiny, Alien Isolation, Wolfenstein, MGS5 and then disappointing 1st party titles like Knack, Infamous, and Killzone.
Your choice was literally good cross gen games and a few OK exclusives. In comparison, PS5 is getting great cross gen and exclusive content.
I think if buying a PS4 was worth it, then maybe buying a PS5 is too. I could only imagine that those complaining are new to console gens or whole heartedly got took in the Fanboy wars and "generations" BS that they honestly built up their expectations beyond what was reasonable.
And if Sony do a PS6, it will be fine. PS has the most brand loyal consumers in the industry. If the PS3 didn't put them off buying a PS3, or a PS4, then the PS5 will not put them off a PS6.
@Envy You are the contemplator of truth now as opposed to opinion? How can I evolve my soul so I’m on your level?
@KayOL77
What I mean is I didn't personally like the 'Performance RT' mode as there were too many sacrifices for me when for my first PS5 game when I'm after a showcase experience.
The normal 'Performance' mode was better for me as you still had a lot of the graphical features intact and the resolution range was 4K-1440p.
That's just my personal preference. That's why I said it's great to have the options available.
@Voltan cheers for the reply bud.
Insomniac are one of the very best developers in the world.
Insomniac has really been putting in the work for PS5 and this now sets the standard for when companies do shift away from cross-gen releases. 60 fps has to be an option for current-gen only releases from day one. Great job, the way it supports its games is why I don't mind shelling out the $ for what Insomniac makes.
@blinx01 Fair enough. Like many others, I really enjoyed old spidey and all the people reflecting in everything. It wasn’t perfect, but then I don’t know what we can class as perfect. Even a 3090 doesn’t render infinitely detailed games.
@Envy It's not the truth though it's total nonsense. While certain games are cross gen it also means said games are getting a Native PS5 version too. You are 100% wrong in every sense of the word along with the top commenter and anyone that liked the comment too. It sounds to me like PS5 owners begrudge people who still don't have a PS5 the means to play some of the latest games, I'm sorry but it really does.
I have a PS5 myself and do I feel alienated? no not al all and I'm glad more Players will be given the opportunity to play these games.
@vapidwolf It’s insane to me how people believe or have accepted the idea that the growth of games can only be increased resolution and frames or ray tracing.
There is much more room for improvement for the animation of characters, items and environments. There is much more room for the improvement of the AI of npc’s that include combatants and non-combatants. This is where cross-gen truly hinders the growth of games and too many people are ignorant and don’t realize it. This has always been the case for PC players but this is the first time that consoles are hindering consoles within a single company. As bad as it is for Sony, Microsoft has to deal with the Xbox one.
@DeepSpace5D Big exclusives that actually matter, yes. When is the last time an indi pushed the medium forward? So, yeah there may be some PS5 exclusive indies, but, woopti-do. I’d much rather Sony’s PS5 indies be cross-gen than the game the that push the medium forward, like GoW.
@DeepSpace5D yes, they are looking at it glass half empty, but as of right now, they are correct and you are assuming. Let's hope (surely) that Sony has a show lined up for phase 2, because at the minute there is no ps5 exclusive on the horizon from ps studios.
Again it may be worst case scenario thinking but until Sony paint us a different picture, this is the only one we've got.
@carlos82 I agree bigger discs with bigger day one patches instead of smaller ones such a dissapointing thing.
@adrianthealchemist 12-15 would be my guess which is inline with the average length of the older entries. i don't think that is something they can market because it is a negative selling point to many people. i think that length is fine, but does not warrant the full $100CAD price tag by any stretch of the imagination.
@Porco they'll still defend it, even though they used resi 8's length for the argument as to why returnal was worth more. Some people will defend anything for their dopamine fix, even if that makes them look daft.
@Loftimus If I’ve spent 80 hours on returnal and still not seen it all, but only spent about 20 hours on resi and spent £70 as opposed to £55, do I not have a point in saying returnal has given me more bang for my buck?
@KayOL77 see what i mean?
@ATaco lied about what exactly? Point me to the definitive statement where Sony or anyone at the company said 'all exclusives in 2022 will be PS5 exclusive'? Otherwise this 'they lied' thing is pure nonsense.
@Arugula what, the first year of PS4 was quite awful, and even first 2-3 years were mediocre. PS5 has better exclusives after 7 months than PS4 did in 2 years, easily.
@KayOL77 if you are prepared to pay £70 ($10 more than the US before tax), that's up to you, but that doesn't mean its worth it. How can it be worth it, when others can buy it much cheaper somewhere else?
@Omnistalgic well said. Kudos
@Immortal_Barnet
You need to go back and reread the entire discussion of comments that have replies because I was simply using his own words. I don't believe Sony lied.
@get2sammyb fair enough, but I would still like the staff to do one of those soap opera pieces on it to illuminate the ignorance on the discussion.
@tselliot on what Horizon being the best looking game when it comes out? Or the Staff posts? LIke I said I just wanted a soap opera piece, they did that on other issues, namely the "Does Sony only care about AAA blockbuster game" nonsense.
@ATaco oh sorry my bad
@Arugula @Richnj as a PS5 owner I don't feel alienated in any way shape or form. HZD and GoW should come out on PS4 100% and I love that.
My PS5 is me set for the future but I make certain gains on games like spiderman HZD, GoW with the performance upgrades which is great. I am playing Spiderman Remastered now and it's excellent.
As for expectations there isn't anything new going on here. We've had it every generation. You don't just suddenly switch off support for over 100 million people in your player base. Once more consoles are adopted it will shift to more stuff being PS5 only but until then it makes zero sense to have everything exclusive. Cross gen will allow them to close the gap and still reap in the finances needed to fund the next game.
Nobody has been forced to buy next gen and people can still stick to their PS4 and can still sell their PS5 for some margin at places like CEX.
Anyone who went into this generation expecting a hard stop on PS4 game development needs to take their head for a wobble because that's not really how it works.
@Loftimus In the uk we often pay more...I understand that it is not logical for digital goods to cost more...unless we also pay VAT on digital, I haven’t checked this. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that I paid £70 for it, and it still hasn’t let me go. I’d kind of be a fool to decry it’s worth at a personal subjective level. I feel I AM getting my money’s worth.
@Alpha_Pulse I agree. The definitive versions of first party games on PS4 are on the ps5. I think Sony said they made 5% revenue from ps5 as compared to like 80-90 on PS4, and they see the ps5 jump to about 30% in a year(my figures might be a bit off here). The PS4 was actually a vastly underestimated wildcard at the start of this gen. The more Sony are making, the more they are also investing in new games. Ethically, and also for gamers the PlayStation platform is win-win. They WANT to make good games that sell well, and we WANT good games. Symbiosis. 🤣
@OmegaStriver Interesting, so I guess in your reality 5+ million sellers like Ratchet & Clank that come from a big studio like Insomniac are indie games now? Should we lump other games that sell 5+ million copies from big AAA studios in the indie category as well, such as Gears of War?
@Loftimus No they are assuming just like I am. Where has it been stated by Sony that Ratchet is the last next-gen exclusive on the PS5 for the next few years? Nowhere. That is called an assumption mate.
The only difference between my assumption and Omega’s is that I am going off of the output within the first 6 months of the console, as well as Hulst’s statements regarding next-gen exclusives, to make a logical conclusion, whereas Omega literally made up his assumption out of thin air.
@Alpha_Pulse We need to pin this post somewhere.
@DeepSpace5D xbox fans have been doing that for years....
Maybe a few years is stretching it, but i can't see any of these yet to be revealed games coming before gow and gt7 can you? So next autumn at the earliest? The op isn't far off mate.
@Loftimus If he would have said Ratchet is probably the last next-gen exclusive until 2022 like you are saying, I’d say most likely correct. But a few years? Way off and that is a big difference to me than saying coming next year. We’re talking about going from 2022 to 2024, that’s a big jump.
@DeepSpace5D fair enough. A year is still stinky though. Personally, as long as cross gen games are £60, Sony can keep them coming.
@Loftimus Was Miles Morales 10 pounds cheaper for the PS4 version? Here in the states I believe it cost the same as the PS5 version.
It will be interesting to see how they handle the pricing for these full-price crossgen games.
This what happens when a game is not shackled by old Gen limitations.
@Alpha_Pulse
Yep, the improvements to PS4 like faster load times and usually better frame rates is the cherry on top. It's the only way to play PS5 games and now the best way to play PS4 games too.
@Alpha_Pulse to be fair, when it comes to sony first party development (when looking back on the 25 years of playstation), sony has in fact put a hard stop on its legacy console the moment a new one released. this cross gen scenario we are seeing is in fact new. that said, 3rd party development usually supports the older console for another 18-24 months so you are correct there. but in the history of playstation, i believe there are only TWO sony games that released on a legacy console after the launch of a new one — god of war 2 (released on ps2 after ps3 released) and gran turismo 6 (released on ps3 after ps4 released). besides those outliers, i don't think you will find another example of this so it is perfectly fair that some people have had their expectations flipped with the lastest news. i see valid arguments on both sides but ultimately, if i am going to plunk down a ton of cash on a new console, i do expect a next generation experience with no compromises. unfortunately, we are not going to get that during the first 12-18 months of the ps5 outside of a few expections (demons' souls, returnal, ratchet and clank etc.).
I do a resolution drop to 1440p on my PC so I can do RayTracing and silky FPS. Still looks great on my 4K screen.
As long as not dipping down to something crazy, it will look great.
@DeepSpace5D miles was £50 for both ps4 and ps5, sackboy was £60 for both, so i would hope so.
@ATaco
“It's the only way to play PS5 games and now the best way to play PS4 games too”
Exactly. At this point nobody should play Control on a PS4 if they hunting for a PS5
The “crossgen” experience on a PS5 is tons better
@DeepSpace5D Ratchet and Clank is not an indie title.......... I never said it was.
I said Ratchet and Clank is going to be the last true PS5 game for a while at the very top of this comment section😐
@Loftimus That’s actually really interesting to think about, because I doubt the PS5 version of Horizon II will be less than $70. I’d be shocked if it’s a $60 title on PS5 while something like Returnal is at the higher price point.
Guess we’ll find out soon if they’ll split the pricing between generations, or how they’ll handle it.
@OmegaStriver Well, you said it was going to be the last true PS5 game for a few years, and I just think that’s a massive exaggeration.
@DeepSpace5D the way i see it, they can't charge £70 for a ps4 game so that is going to have to be £60. It's whether they've got the cheek to ask for a £10 upgrade to the ps5 edition. I can't see that going down well.
looks like ill be picking this up
I'll def be playing the 60 fps RT mode, unless there's a noticeable enough dip in quality.
"The developer has posted a quick clip of what Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks like with ray tracing enabled at the fabled frame rate, which you can check out below."... on TWITTER where every video looks like it was made in the 80s.
This is great news though and encourages me to buy nearer launch.
If the PS5 can run rift apart with ray tracing on @ 60fps. There is no reason why the PS4 couldn't run it at 1080p @ 30fps.
@tinCAT-zero from a graphics point of view, maybe, but that's not the only difference between the consoles.
I don't know how much of a strain Rift Apart puts on the CPU and RAM because while it shows an object density the PS4 couldn't cope with, I don't know how much of that is interactive and essential, versus what could be stripped away in a PS4 version. The real sticking point is the transition between worlds. This is a streaming level load, where everything you see through the rift (and possibly a little bit more) is loaded in real-time as your perspective shifts, and then as you travel through the rift, enough geometry can be streamed from SSD to RAM during the travel animation to make the whole thing seamless.
This implementation would be impossible on the PS4 because of not just the speed of the hard drive, but the fact that transfering data from the hard drive to RAM is mediated by other components, and so there are multiple bottlenecks that limit loading speed. You could fake it, similar to how the Dishonored 2 level with time travel worked, where both "levels" were actually loaded in one map, stacked vertically, and switching between them was achieved by changing the vertical coordinate, however this means that you have to simplify the levels considerably, as Arkane have spoken about in multiple documentaries and articles, because everything has to fit into RAM at once, and you have to burden the CPU with managing AI etc across both levels. So faking it works fine for a single level as a gimmick, but would get old real fast for a whole game.
Continued:
Now there are lots of other challenges the team have overcome to deliver this mechanic, but they've not been spoken about anywhere I've seen. I'll be interested to hear more once the start to open up about the whole thing at developer conferences, but until then I can't tell how many other issues there would be in running the game on a PS4.
The PS5 is a truly impressive technical achievement, with some subtle aspects that are more than an iterative step, but it's going to take a few years for developers to truly get to grips with how to wring the most out of its features. I can't wait!
@theheadofabroom
I don't have a response to that. But you're right that the PS5 is a stunning achievement. I can't wait to get one, but it'll be a few years.
60 with Ray tracing for me.
@Porco I agree with you and I think I was generalising with my comment rather than specifically talking about Sony. There are tons of games that have been on both last gen and current gen across the third party spectrum. Even games like The Force Unleashed was released across both PS2 and PS3 but had features missing due to the lack of power. Fifa 13 was released for PS2 in 2012! 6 years after the PS3 released.
I am not saying that people do not feel disheartened by the lack of exclusivity at this point but having the expectation that a business would sacrifice over 90% of its consumers by making the majority of their offerings exclusive are woefully misinformed.
My advice to those people is to continue the PS4 generation which is still alive and kicking until the offerings suit their requirements.
@Alpha_Pulse thanks for your comment. you make valid points about 3rd party development and absolutely sony should take advantage of its userbase as much as it can (if it makes sense to do so). i think with 1st party development it is a little different because that is arguably where we see some of the greatest and most impressive experiences. 1st party development is able to fully take advantage of the hardware in ways 3rd party can't (either due to budget limitations or lack or technical knowledge and understanding of the hardware) so expectations are higher in that area. i think there is worry and concern that this generation may never completely get off its feet and may be stuck between the old and the new. this has led some people to become hyperbolic and frustrated. in reality, i do believe that by 2023, sony will move all of its resources to the ps5 and will no longer support ps4 development. i can live with that but perhaps some people did not expect there to be a 2 year delay to this console generation. i do hope that sony does not lose sight of what makes console gaming so special and that hardware exclusive experiences is a big part of its appeal.
@Porco hopefully that's not the case! I am sure it will take off but given the pandemic I think it will be longer than we would have hoped. I think with the generational leap getting smaller with each new console we will see more of these blurred lines between generations. Probably more like the PC gaming scene, same games just better hardware. That's what we are seeing with the PS5 right now I think. Faster storage, compute etc.
