A sequel to uber-popular retro brawler River City Girls is in development for the PlayStation 5 and PS4, while the original will thump Sony’s next-gen system as well. The sequel – due out in 2022, with Arc System Works on publishing duties and WayForward developing – will follow directly after the events of its predecessor, and will once again put you in control of Misako and Kyoko, as well as Kunio, Riki, and more.
The press release teases: “New moves, new enemies, new recruits, new environments, and the return of an old foe await, along with the same over-the-top sense of humour and adrenaline-pumping combat of its predecessor. The game will also feature two-player co-op action both locally and online.”
As previously mentioned, the original will also be making its way to the PS5 at some point in the future. Both games will receive physical releases, courtesy of Limited Run Games.

They've been teasing something was in the works but wasn't dlc so obviously this is it. Hard game & harder grinding to buy ability upgrades! Still, keeps it simple like the Double Dragon era with little extras like the odd side quests etc..,so it does its job well to anyone who grew up on the old beat-em-ups.👍The presentation makes it very Anime!
I had thought they, WayForward, were actually developing a game based on the RWBY franchise. I wonder if that is still in development and just was not ready to be shown.
Regarding River City Girls.......welcome news, very happy it is getting a sequel.
Honestly for me, this is actually the best game announced at E3.
The character designs seem quite different from the style in the first game, based on the image in the article.
Also, why would you play as Kunio and Riki in a River City Girls game?
I really like the first game but the art looks different here, I really hope they didn't change the art, the first game art is really cute.
Edit: It seems the new pic is new characters, I though it's the original characters with new art style. The game seems to be using the old graphics/art, can't wait for it, day one for me 😃
As long as it's more than just 2 players, that's sweet.
@Ralizah
The more options for playable characters in a beat em up, the better, imo. But I guess they could've created two new female characters rather than letting you play as guys if they were trying to stick with the whole girl power thing.
I'll definitely pick up the physical version of the first game for PS5. I waited too long to get a copy for Switch and it sold out. River City Girls 2 I'll double dip for PS5 and Switch.
@Gamer83 Right. In River City GIRLS, all of the playable characters should be female. You already play as guys in the other Kunio-kun games.
@Ralizah
Fair enough, I don't disagree.
@Ralizah. Why not play as the two mentioned? Kunio is a bad ass and started the whole series. Hopefully you dont have a silly feminist angle.
