And… Action! Filming has started on the HBO’s hotly anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us, with star Gabriel Luna – who will play Tommy – confirming the tidbit on Instagram. He posted a photograph from the set alongside co-stars Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Nico Parker (Sarah), with the trio riding in a car – a bit like the scene from the start of the game. We all know what happens there.
Filming will take place in Calgary, Canada, but there’s no release window attached to the show itself just yet. Nevertheless, seeing the cast together like this is a sobering moment – let’s hope we get more details from the set itself over the coming months.

Certainly reminds me of the opening scenes (albeit in daylight). I guess nico can go home after today's shoot is over
Nico right now
I wonder if there will be more flashback scenes in the show, perhaps fill in the lengthy gap between the end of the prologue and the start of the main story.
I also imagine that Sarah will be involved a lot more than her original role.
Hope they got AC in that car. I can see this heat wave on their faces. 😅
I just don't understand picking Pascal for this role. I'm very worried he is going to ruin it.
@ILikeStake He’s a decent actor tbh. Whoever they picked, someone wouldn’t be happy.
This is going to be really good. Definitely have faith in the high quality that relates to HBO programming. Please go watch Chernobyl if you haven't. Craig Mazin (the creator) is a genius.
@nessisonett I don't know man. He was pretty awful in Wonder Woman. The only role I thought he was good in was Game of Thrones, but that was a pretty straightforward role and he didn't have much time and character building. Mandalorian is a role lacking much emotion. He has not proved to me at all that he can act. WW84 was one of the worst performances I've seen in awhile.
@mrtennis1990 Agreed, Chernobyl was excellent.
Pretty hopeful for this myself. A talented cast is waaaaay more important than them looking like the source characters, and this cast is pretty strong. Combine that with Chernobyl being excellent, the game's writer being heavily involved in the script, and HBO bankrolling it, and the chances of this being a Prince of Persia or Assassins Creed situation are slim to non-existent.
@ILikeStake WW84 was indeed atrocious, and the other examples you give have fair points too, but I'm guessing by its exclusion that you haven't watched Narcos, so if you want a better reference for Pascal you should definitely check it out.
I am actually super hopeful about this production. Pedro Pascal absolutely crushes it in Narcos, If Beale Street Could Talk, GoT, etc. And Craig Mazin's Chernobyl was so good it physically hurt me to watch the last episode because I didn't want it to be over.
I get the feeling the thing that happens at the start of the game is not the thing that will happen here
I'm hopeful that this will be good, but I want to wait until I see more images and video from production before I get excited for it.
@ILikeStake Its funny because i thought he was the best thing about WW84. Nah he's a very good actor especially if you watch stuff like Narcos.
I know a lot of people here love him for some reason. I haven't watched Narcos, so maybe that would convince me. It is just one show and one character though. Sometimes actors are good at only one thing. I'm still worried, hopefully he proves me wrong and WW84 was just a crap covered blip. It had a terrible Director so that could have had something to do with it.
@WallyWest I would agree with this. The story for that movie was so bad. He stood out for me in it.
@ViolentEntity wanna bet.
@ILikeStake One character, one show true enough. But the show’s a great one and his character in it much closer to the everyday one of Joel than the cartoonish ones of GoT and WW.
@ILikeStake @mrtennis1990
Chernobyl, Sharp Objects, Mare of Easttown, The Flight Attendant...all recent HBO Max offerings that are worth watching.
@lacerz His Dark Materials, Lovecraft Country, Watchmen, Perry Mason, Raised by Wolves...man they got some great content. New Sudden Move movie looks good too with Cheadle and Benicio DT. Can't wait for Sopranos spinoff too.
Those new clickers trying to get into the car look rubbish.
@lacerz exactly right! Rewatching game of thrones as well!
Is it Pedro Pascal's turn to be "that guy who's in everything"? I know he hasn't been in a ton of stuff yet just saying I could see it happening.
Man, that first episode is going to be such a tearjerker, I barely got past it in the game. 😭
Why are they filming in Canada doesn’t the game start off in Texas idk 🤷♂️ about this guys
@ILikeStake Yeah I wouldn't base whether an actor can act off of one performance in a movie that was in general terrible.
@Floki Sure but it goes both ways. Some people talk like they think he's the second coming of Tom Hanks. I think it's a product of him picking roles that are "cool" to the gamer crowd and less about his actual skill in acting. In my mind, dudes don't just start out as awesome actors from one job, they have to earn that praise. It's okay to be a fan though. All I said is I'm worried about it. Hopefully he/they will prove me wrong. I want it to be good despite my criticism.
@ILikeStake
Good shows as well! I just watched No Sudden Move. Great movie, but the filmography where it appeared like the camera went into a fish eye mode was disrupting for me. You'll notice the effect quite a bit in the movie.
@ILikeStake Well... People have name several movie and TVs he been apart of that he have done well in. I did also enjoy him in the Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
@ce_llo24 That happens all the time. They film in locations that aren't the actual ones in the story, it doesn't really mean anything negative, since it's so common.
@ILikeStake Perry Mason was honestly way better than I thought it would be. Matthew Rhys is one of those guys that’s great in basically everything though.
@mrtennis1990 Agreed Chernobyl was a great show, so well shot and acted by all, definitely up there with one of the best TV shows, it's a hard watch at times but that what makes it great I think, you just carry on watching in disbelief of what's happening.
@nessisonett yea I was surprised with Perry mason too just watched it because of Mathew Rhys as I thought he was amazing in the Americas (up there with one of my favourite TV shows, if you have seen it) he is a great actor fair play
@Daleaf @nessisonett Yes, that show is a master class in acting. Well shot, great story, just wonderfully done all around. Really looking forward to the second season.
This has to be one of the most pointless videogame adaptations ever and I'm sure I don't even have to explain why
Yea i started to watch it and thought after the first ep it was ok, before I knew it I was on ep4 lol was hooked. can't wait for season 2, will probably watch the first season again at some point, I do like to watch brilliant TV shows over after about 2 years or so as I think when you binge things you tend to miss things. Recently watched fringe for the 2nd time few months back, first few episodes I remembered pretty well after that I was like oh yea this happened, same with sopranos things happen you totally forget (except the ending lol)
This entire thing would have been better with unknown actors. All roles cast for this are bad choices.
@ILikeStake sometimes being likeable is enough, look at keanu reeves ,everyone loves him, including myself ,but let's be honest the guy can't act,he has the acting range of a pot plant.
Fingers crossed this series turns out good, and not another flop adaptation.
@PaperAlien why do I feel the same way? are we what they call "clairvoyants?'
