August 2021's free PS Plus games have been officially announced, and guess what? It's the same lineup that Sony itself leaked last weekend. We didn't see that one coming!
To recap, next month's selection includes:
- Hunter's Arena: Legends (PS5, PS4)
- Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville (PS4)
- Tennis World Tour 2 (PS4)
All three of these games will be available to download (or simply add to your library) from the 3rd August.
Hunter's Arena: Legends was first revealed as a PS Plus title during Sony's most recent State of Play broadcast. It's a melee-based battle royale game, and you'll be able to grab it on PS5 and PS4. This a brand new title, so we'll try to bring you a review soon.
Meanwhile, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a colourful and fun team-based 'shooter' — even if it failed to live long in the memory upon its release in 2019. To be fair, we were still quite fond of it at the time, awarding it an 8/10 and describing it as "full of wit and irreverent humour".
And finally, Tennis World Tour 2 is just about the best tennis game on current PlayStation consoles — although to say that there's any competition would be a lie. We described it as a "winner" in our 7/10 review.
What do you think of August's PS Plus games? Remember to give us an honest opinion in the comments section below.

Well, 0 out of 3 ain't bad!
Edit: I am kinda looking forward to the tennis game. Don't think I've played one since Virtua Tennis on the DC.
Really happy about the tennis game but that's about it for me. Hoping for a better selection next month.
Being very very optimistic, perhaps PS Now this month will make up for… whatever this is.
Was kinda hoping the leak was just Sony trolling.
Well, one thing you can say about these games is that they're certainly games.
@nessisonett could Sony be trying to get more people to PS Now? This weirdly could work.

Disappointed, to say the least. I suppose you can't have an amazing lineup every month though.
@bozz That's debatable.
It is very rare for a free PS Plus game to be suitable for my kid to play, so I'm actually quite happy that this month there will be two! And he's a big PvZ fan to boot!
Hunter's Arena: Legends might have potential if you like that kind of game - the fact that it's coming to Plus on release day (for the platform) might help. Since I don't like that kind of game, I can't speak to how much potential to expect.
And that goes for the rest, here - I just don't like those kind of games. Thankfully I have plenty of backlog.
But it's been a pretty solid year so far. Hoping the August doldrums will be forgotten after some killer fall and winter Plus titles. C'mon, Sony, you can do it!
Maybe they were going for titles that nobody really owns lol.
It's pretty rare that GwG trumps PS+
This lineup and the whole thing with Xbox pass, I'm starting to have my doubts if I'm going to buy a PS5. I love my PS4, but the PS5 is starting to feel like the PS3 all over again. I hope I'm wrong.
Wishful thinking that maybe...just maybe Sony pulls a last minute switcheroo like they did with PES 2019 to Detroit: Become Human Digital Deluxe Edition back in July 2019.
Sony saving up this month for an amazing release next month. I can't wait...
Dreadful month but then it is summertime with people playing outdoors 🏓🏀⚽️
For the first time in a long time GWG > PS+.
Weak month but we've had many good ones lately.
Hopefully just a blip.
@PapaGlitch
Got that right. GwG lineup for August looks leagues better than the joke Sony cooked up for PS+ this month.
Months like this are not for me, it’s when I have friends over, who are not big gamers. Perfect party games
Also everybody is saying that GWG has beaten PS PLUS.. but we had Darksiders 3, only a few months after it’s release! If you have had PS PLUS for years like I have, the loyalty amount of content is insane.
That's two horrendous months in a row for PS4 owners. Might be looking to drop PS+ if this keeps up.
I’m happy to try Plants vs. Zombies!
Complete trash. Wont even add these to my library.
@velio84 the pathless is worth your 20 quid. Solid game with great boss fights!
@ShogunRok Hunter's Arena Legends is on PS5 and PS4 on PS Plus this month
Totally agree for what seems like the first time ever Games with gold seems to have better line-up than PS+
@TheMysticOne Ah, of course — I've edited that in. Thanks for letting us know!
Look, I'll be honest, I am happy with what we're getting.
Hunter's Arena looks fun enough to try for free, and I always wanted to try Plants VS Zombies, but I would never have paid for it. The tennis game doesn't look good though...
I really prefer games like this instead of really high level ones, for purely selfish reasons : there is a very good chance I already own the high profile games.
Still, I miss the time of 2 PS4, 2 PS3 and 2 Vita games each months, with a lot of cross-buy...
I'm really interested in that Tennis game. If I want to play at least one of the games each month, then it's a win for me.
Perfect month for me. Glad I'll have nothing to distract me from Hades, Kena and Psychonauts 2
Even as a PVZ fan (I loved the first 2), I've heard nothing but bad things about Neighborville from the fan base. They just completely botched it, from what I can tell.
@Pat_trick my Nephew got an Xbox Series S for his Birthday and it’s a great little console. SOooo... tiny, about one third the size of the PS5. And no power brick... how did they do it?!?
I know there are a few compromises with the Series S but it’s a great console for £250. I’m almost tempted to get one myself to bridge the gap until the PS5 Slim (or Pro) comes out. Best of both worlds (so long as my PS4 Pro keeps ticking).
Personally though, I don’t think I could ever fully abandon PlayStation after all these years, no matter how far they fall. Their first party games just can’t be beat. I do wish they’d get their act together in other areas though 🙄
nearing the end of a plague tale. That game alone made July such a great month!
Yeah...thats not so great for me. My 3 moth sub is coming up so probably not renewing.
I have a policy of adding all Plus games to the library. I endorse that policy, as you never know what you might want to play someday. And I will add these games too.....
....but wow, these games are a stiff test of my “add everything policy”. I can’t imagine ever taking the time to play these.
Pretty good month for me tbh!
@velio84 I picked it up for £30 back when it launched alongside the PS5 and loved every minute (took about 20 hours to platinum) can get it for about £20 now, less if you go physical.
I would advise anyone who is excited about TWT2 to reign in their enthusiasm. It's quite honestly one of the worst games I've ever played, and I take no pleasure in saying that as a huge tennis fan. Gone are the glory days of Virtua Tennis and Top Spin unfortunately.
Worst month in a while for sure. PvZ looks fun, I know my friend's kids enjoy it a lot.
Oh well we're getting Kena Bridge Of Spirits this month so it doesn't bother me
I just wish it was the complete edition of the tennis game with the PS5 upgrade.
What a crappy, mediocre selection this month. I'd take the tennis and give it a shot if it were PS5.. opps awp69 must have read my mind.
The worse month in PS Plus history. It makes me wonder how Sony has sold 10 million PS5.
@Snake_V5 Likely because there are more selling points for the PS5 than primarily just PS Plus.
I guess they took a look at the new Nintendo SNES titles and thought "We can do even worse"
I continue to say this, but — of all the words in the English language, I’m not sure why game developers keep recycling the word “Legend” into their game titles. It just makes the game sound so generic. I’m already bored of it and I don’t even know what kind of game it is. 😜
Nothing for me in this month and I won’t be adding them to my library.
Somehow even worse than the NSO offering!
Nope, nope and nope!
Woeful selection.
PS Plus started the year really well, but it does feel like it's tailed off somewhat
Yeah, its pretty poor. I'll try the tennis, I guess.
So a PVZ game that's dead, a game that should be free to play that will be dead on arrival and a tennis game that has reviewed horribly. Awesome. Second month in a row that I'll not even add the games to my library.
Was almost tempted by PVZ to play with the kid but he told me he'd tried it and hated it. Oh well.
@fR_eeBritney Interesting about the Series S!
Yeah, their first party line up is amazing. But if you think about their exclusive line up right now, it's Demon's Souls, Ratchet and Clank and Returnal. I think that if I bought the PS5 I would feel short-changed. Maybe the Series S would be a good low cost investment.
Tennis for sure. Two MP only games in one month is kinda... rough. Singleplayer over here.
Ah well
Not the best month, tbh.
Not interested in any of these. You can do better Sony.
I knew as soon as i committed to a year's sub it would turn to poo!
@fR_eeBritney @Pat_trick
That's what I've got. PS5+ XSS combo and I love both consoles. Series S really is a small marvel of engineering. Plus, you can get one new already discounted because they aren't terribly popular (that's what I did).
Worst month of the year so far it seems but eh it's ok, next month's game releases are looking good.
Im here for the monthly outrage
@bozz But are they really?
I probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy these games so I'm happy they're on plus.
Whatever happened to the Virtua Tennis franchise? Sega!!!
Worst month ever wtf is sony on😴.word up son
How did we go from Control & FF7R to this...
Well, it finally happened. Microsoft bought Playstation and merged Plus with Gold....
Can I get my Plus membership converted to 2 weeks of Now or something?
I mean….ehhhh….not excited about the lineup but I do hope others are!
Hunting for exciting new games.
Planted in a depressing reality of paltry PS Plus lineups.
And these states repeat in very much the manner of an epic tennis rally.
It’s like ordering a steak and they bring out a cut that’s all fat.
I’d have more fun with a $5 hooker than this trash.
Removed - disrespecting others
Anyone knows if the Tennis game is an easy platinum or not?
Tennis World Tour 2 is beyond awful and the other two games are of zero interest to me.
https://www.psu.com/reviews/tennis-world-tour-2-ps4-review/
Are the even trying to compete with Game Pass or are they just throwing in the towel?
@djdizzy Who wouldn't?
Nothing exciting
Games with Gold is alot better this month.
That tennis game looks like a PS3 game.
Thry should bring back virtua tennis, it's clearly better than twt2
This is only the 2nd time that there is nothing i desire...the other time was when that goat simulator thing was given away..awful selection this month..
I don't get upset about it because my backlog is huge and I've had lots of good games from Plus but this months line-up actually made me cringe. Like my actual face gurned.
Awful line-up this month. I normally add everything to library and maybe I'll play somewhere down the line.
Don't think I'll bother this month, but my backlog is huge anyway, so I'm not bothered really.
Sony needs to put out something much better next month though
Not sure why there's so much hate for Plants Vs Zombies, it is actually quite a fun game, especially if you've got kids
@fR_eeBritney @Pat_trick You seem to be having the same thoughts as me. I've always waited for about a year before looking at the upgrade and so far, I'm still waiting!
My Pro is still running quiet and quick, thanks in part to the internal Crucial SSD, and there really is nothing PS5 exclusive wise that floats my boat.
Happy to wait until the revised 6nm PS5 arrives at least (might've fixed the controller drift by then too?) and enjoy all the mountains of excellent stuff that's coming for the old stager.
However, I doubt that any of this month's vile offerings will be infecting my hard drive! Thankfully I've only paid about £32 for an annual PS Plus (or is that Minus?) sub for the last 3 years!
Roll on September...maybe PushSquare could do an article on how much money a publisher of, say, a mediocre tennis game can make by allowing Sony to add it to the PS Plus list...I think I would find that more entertaining than any of these games It does also feel like Sony have recently been going after the more juvenile or casual market on that has traditionally been Nintendo's. Days Gone and NFS Payback are still the only PS Plus games I have played to completion
@sanderson72 Oh, wow! I've been paying full price like a fool, which hurts even more hahaha
I dont really know what to expect, reviews from pushsquare for tennis / plants are 7 and 8 out of 10, that doesnt sound bad. However Oddworld was just 4?
Well I try all 3 games next month and see.
@Pat_trick ShopTo.net at PS Sale time/Black Friday!
Absolute babba
"And finally, Tennis World Tour 2 is just about the best tennis game on current PlayStation consoles — although to say that there's any competition would be a lie".
This seems like an odd statement to make when AO Tennis 2 actually had decent enough reviews (69 on Metacritic compared to TWT2 58). I thought Sammy would know that seeing he's a huge tennis fan?
AO Tennis 2 is actually available on PS Now for those who want to try it instead. It's not amazing but I've heard it's better than TWT2.
Always so much hate on the free games announced. I try and look at it over the course of a year and ask myself "Did I get my $40(I always buy my psplus discounted) worth of games?" The answer has always been yes. Sometimes there are down months to be sure, but overall it is a plus.
Disappointed... Waiting for the Poll article to vote them down
Meanwhile, Game Pass is getting:
Microsoft Flight Simulator
The Ascent
12 minutes
Psychonauts 2
and on and on....
Looking forward to trying that tennis game... I like tennis. As for the other two... I don't care.
It's a weak month this time.
Knackites betrayed again, denied the knack 2 again.

Please pushsquare, don't show this tragedy in timeline as new, again...
I may claim Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, but otherwise this is a terrible month...
@Kaizen753 I have 2 favourite tennis games. Super Tennis on SNES and Grand Slam Tennis on Wii. Both were simple to play but had depth of controls to master. It's a shame these last 2 generations have failed to deliver a decent Tennis game.
@DrJames that's gamepass not games with gold. Gamepass is comparable to PS Now and games with gold comparable to PS plus.
@tselliot
Gamepass is not a relevant comparison. The MS service that is comparable to PS Plus is awful in comparison and has been for a number of years as they concentrate all their money on Gamepass. Gamepass is akin to PS Now, but with half the games and at twice the price. It does have newer games if you are all caught up with everything released though.
PvZ is actually crazy fun I think. I've played this series more than any CoD or BF, lol.
PvZ Garden Warfare was fun for a time, can't be bothered with this one though. The rest of these games are just meh.
Can’t win every month. At least since PS5 released, and I would argue we’ll before that, PS+ has been the best gaming subscription service by far on a game per pound basis.
Looking forward to trying out the tennis game I had nearly bought it a couple of times
@misak192 Basically it's just their opinion. I really only lookout for bug mentions in reviews. I quite like Biomutant (since it's got an auto lock in 1.5) and they only gave it 4/10 but to me it is definitely a 7 of 10 where as (having read other reviews) it sounds like I'd give tennis a 3 or 4 not only because it is flawed but I also don't like tennis.
