Horizon Zero Dawn’s backwards compatibility patch has been robustly demanded by PlayStation 5 owners, and while it was announced alongside a delay to sequel Horizon Forbidden West, it’s finally here. We figured we’d take a look at how well it runs with Sony’s vaunted PS5 Game Boost enabled, and we can confirm that the results are scintillating.
Guerrilla Games’ action RPG packed both a rich narrative and some of the most sublime visuals on PS4, but its gameplay was also among some of the best in the genre. Now it feels silky smooth on the next-gen console, thanks to the doubled framerate. Lining up shots and witnessing the carnage is a joy, and if you haven’t currently got a copy of the game installed, we’ve embedded some footage above.

That's good to know. Hope the same is true for the sequel.
Time to get the plat. Just sad the HDR is still awful
Finally, can’t wait to play it again. I hope uncharted 4 is also updated sometimes in the future 😃
Never played the DLC and since Sony gave away the Complete Edition for free a few months ago I guess now it's the time to play this again
There were a few quests in the expansion that I never finished.
Seems as good a time as any to get through them.
Yeah just put it in to run around a bit.
Scarlet Nexus, Ratchet and Clank, Ghost of Tsushima Iki Isalnd have been a dream to play on PS5. Rock Solid, fluid action "butter"... Consoles are back!!!
Hoping Tales of Arise keeps the string going.
@AFCC Awful? It was one of the best I saw on the PS4
I've been playing like this on PC for a while, makes a huge difference to this game
New Game+ Ultra Hard here I come.
@AFCC looks great to me.
@MightyDemon82 @carlos82 do you guys seriously can see anything at nighttime? Maybe it's my tv? But all the other games look good
@AFCC must be your TV/calibration as it always looked spectacular at night on mine. To be fair I do have quite a high end 4K HDR TV with a pretty high peak brightness but this is amongst the very best I've seen even since its release
Started this again today as never played frozen wilds. It honestly feels like a whole new game. It really does hold up! I am loving it.
@AFCC hdr is great for me too and night is absolutely fine.
Never did finish the DLC...with the sequel delayed to next year I guess now's the time.
@carlos82 your new Avatar is giving me motion sickness vibes 😉😉😉
Between the 60fps and the already jaw dropping visuals you could think its a current gen game. Actually before i played around myself i came across an IGN showing off the update but i didn't know that when i clicked and assumed it was gameplay of the sequel, at first i was like WOW the sequel looks stunning and then IGN mentioned it was the first game and my jaw dropped. I haven't actually played the game since i got a 4K TV so between that and the 60fps it feels like a whole new game visually.
@mariomaster96 Unfortunatel I already played the whole game and DLC twice.
That DLC is one of the best I have played in any game. Really worth going through it
I got the platinum for both AC Odyssey and this recently. I feel like they’re conspiring against me.
I've got to find a way to get a PS5 now. 60 FPS Horizon Zero Dawn=sold
Is it just a frame boost? I swear it looks like more has been done.
@hi_drnick resolution + FPS boost! (Dynamic 4k60fps)
Whoa, somehow I missed that they had actually announced this patch! That's awesome, that's the only game I really needed it on. I figured they'd do directors cut antics like other games for it.
That's great news!
@mrtennis1990 that explains a lot. I thought it was just a frame rate boost. Thanks!
@mrtennis1990 is it now native 4k? Obviously it was already 4k checkerboard on pro but might replay it again now
@Deljo on the official Guerrilla Games Twitter page, it explains the update is keeping the ps4 pro dynamic 4k graphical fidelity with a boosted 60 FPS! Looks even better then expected though watching a few compare and contrast YouTube videos!
@Agramonte Tales is indeed buttery smooth based on the demo.
Nice. I started the game on my PC but was never able to finish due to poor performance at launch. Since my move back to consoles. I haven't had time to go back to it since I've been getting caught on other Playstation exclusives... Sound like a perfect time to finish the game.
It really does look/play a ton better. Though after 2 full play throughs and 100 hours I have no desire to play again, it makes me even more excited for Forbidden West!
This is the perfect excuse for me to jump back in again. An already wonderful game just got even better.
@Floki Same. It runs ok but it's never a buttery smooth 60FPS and instead it's just a stuttery experience. I got the PC version in a Sale for a single figure so not a total loss to me now that I have the alternative of playing it on PS5.
Game looks fine, wanted to give it a try but immediately noticed the pre-rendered cutscenes which run at 30 fps have no sound. Like the starting intro for example. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait for another patch...
@hi_drnick I was thinking the same! Textures and faces just seem so much more detailed all of a sudden. It’s probably always been this detailed but can just appreciate it more with a smoother frame rate.
@AFCC I thought it was just me lol its so bad
@Ward_ting glad I'm not the only one it took by surprise
@ATaco DLC is superb and I did like it more than the original game. You can clearly see the quality jump even though Horizon Zero Dawn itself was already awesome.
@romenyc THANK YOU. I literally can't see enemies most of the time lol
@wiiware I would love to play through uncharted 4 again in PS5 especially if it had 60fps! It was gorgeous and impressive on my PS4 pro so I can imagine how beautiful it'd play at 4K 60fps on PS5! Please Naughty Dog, do us a solid! We can dream lol 🙂✌️
@cali_kush70 Man I definitely want to replay uc4 with 60 fps patch (and maybe ND can add some ssd quick loading). The game is fun gameplay and story wise, I played the game in stealth mode back then in the ps4 days, now I want to play it with gun blazing style lol.
Thanks for the hands-on gameplay, now to make time to get the Platinum before Forbidden West launches!
