Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED has cast some doubt over whether it can still release the native PlayStation 5 version of its latest RPG this year. Since the original release on PS4, a better version for current-gen consoles has always been targetting a launch at some point in the second half of 2021. However, speaking as part of the company's H1 2021 results call (reported by VGC), Michał Nowakowski explained that while the team is still aiming to launch the PS5 version this year, the production schedule could easily change.
He said: "The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year. At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change." Nowakowski then goes on to state that the upcoming PS5 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is being developed by Saber Interactive, is actually in the very same position. Targetting a release this year, but promises cannot be made.
"As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release that game still in late 2021. However, similarly, the development process is ongoing, and we cannot be absolutely dead certain that the release schedule will not change." Of course, COVID-19 continues to impact the development of games as studios work from home.
If anything, it sounds like CD Projekt RED is trying to be realistic with its planning. Both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's PS5 versions are still targeting releases this year, but issues could push them into 2022. More than a third of the development team is working on the PS5 edition as well as patches for the original title, while the rest works on Cyberpunk 2077 DLC and other projects.
"For the time being, we definitely are aiming with both titles for late 2021 and I don’t want to be more specific at this moment in time."

Kinda assumed this. Especially since Witcher 3 ps5 ain't even out yet (which I thought was outsourced to another team though)
Take all the time you need with this one, CDPR. It wouldn't be a good look if the current gen version launches in even a quarter of the state the last gen version was in.
with the amount of patches the devs keep bringing out , you wouldnt be able to even install it on the PS5
My advice: Let this mediocre game die and start doing a GOOD Witcher 4 to get your reputation back. This game is a trainwreck and with every step they wreck it even more
@TeapotBuddha @Jayslow Saber Interactive is developing the PS5 version of The Witcher 3, as the article says.
Well I guess my hope is to see RDR2 PS5 update. And the GTA remastered versions!
It’s Sept 1st, a November holiday launch is 90 days away, I would assume you would know if it’s going to launch this year at this point. This will probably slide to March.
I still am interested to play, I think, but this drawn out process is more and more killing my enthusiasm
What a surprise
Seriously though - better late than rushed, as this exact game showed us before.
Just take your time. If you cant promise this year just say early 2022. Kinda makes me think they are crunching again
This is what they should have been saying last year, hopefully this means the game is going to get a bit more of an overhaul instead of just bringing over some of the PC settings
I hope they release it in a broken state. That's better than delaying until it's actually playable.
CD Projekt Red is one of the last companies to be talking about keeping promises
@carlos82 I think they should have released the PC version and kept on working on the current gen versions skip the PS4 and Xbox One versions or release them later.
Coming... when it's ready?
No way both would drop that close to each other if they were on track anyways
@AFCC I have to agree with you. After getting through it, the game was fine, but no where near good enough to warrant all this time and effort. I get that they want to get the next gen version done, but I really hope they have the sense to move on as soon as possible.
Maybe they just want larger install base and waiting for more people buy current gen consoles...
I will honestly not be surprised if the next gen patch doesn't release till fall 2022. I loved these guys, but ultimately my personal goodwill has limits too. Jeeez. What an epic fall from grace.
@Blacksmith1985 if (as I believe is correct?) the ps5 upgrade is free, your comment has no logic. Surely anyone without a copy who has a ps5 would pick up a ps4 copy for peanuts
@Jayslow It is outsourced. Just shows how much of a sh*tshow CP2077 is.
Wouldn’t surprise me if they released a broken PS5/Series X version before years end just to make further bank on that too.
Their higher ups have shown their true colours already, doubt those colours will fade anytime soon
2022 confirmed
Just cancel Cyberpunk already and give us some more of that sweet, sweet Witcher 3.
Couldn't care less at this point, there's other stuff to play. Cyberpunk can wait on the shelf indefinitely as punishment for their treachery.
I picked up Cyberpunk a few weeks ago for $10 at GameStop, new. I am playing on PS5, have put in about 4 hours, and have not had any performance issues so far. If I had not seen it for 10.00, I would not have picked it up.
Quite enjoying my free version.👍
I drop in and out of it on PS5 between other games.
Not had a crash yet or issues, about 15 hours in.
May finish it and give it away before PS5 version comes out.
Not fussed.
Some people are saying that there aren't enough new releases this year but think many will be saying the opposite in 2022.
Wallets are going to take a battering!
Also, why is a PS5 version so difficult? Some developers could probably get Cyberpunk working on a PS3.
😉
They should hold the release of the PS5 native version of Cyberpunk 2077 until the expansion is ready and go for a full re-launch of the game. It is the best chance the game have to regain traction.
I doubt they could screw this up anymore if they actively tried too. They are legitimate dunces
I wish they would hurry up and get it out!
Just kidding.
For the love of all that holy, don't rush development! Don't create a mockery of the same game twice!
cdpr is so incompetent that they hired several membrs of the modding community to bug fix cyberpunk. of course it won't be ready this year nor should anyone care at this point. the game will never truly be completed adequately and will be saved by mods for the years to come. that is all there is to say about this game at this point.
As one of their big fans, I say puck CDPR. Lost all the respect with this bs release. Lying and not giving out console reviews before it was actually released was something I never expected from anyone let alone CDPR. CDPR that I know is gone.
CDPR is dead to me.
At least they're being transparent about it... sort of.
I liked cp2077 it's a decent game.
But this game feels like a very ambitious indy game made by a few dozen ppl.
Not by a studio that employs at least a thousand heads at a cost of millions.
I can only assume it's like this down to very very bad management.
I beat it, it was mostly fine.
Some new story DLC would be great.
“.... today released its financial results for the first half of the year, showing CD Projekt sales up 29% on the strength of continued sales for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its expansions”
And They are doing just fine.
@AFCC at this rate we aren't getting witcher 4 till 2030 on the ps6
I wish they would move on from The Witcher. They were good games. I know Cyberpunk isn't working out how'd they like, but atleast it was something new.
They need to do better with witcher 4, I don't think this game can be salvaged.
I rate cyberpunk 2077 highly on PC. I really really like it . A lot of bugs are fixed now. I had to stop playing because it kept crashing at the same place but after patch 1.2x it's in a good place.
I've been playing it on PC and it works but... well, it is an average to good game in all honesty. Good main quest line and world building but everything else has been done elsewhere a bit better.
So basically they plan on it coming this year but they don't want to promise anything or repeat past mistakes.
well, if we're being pedantic it didn't launch last year either. :/
Give me The Witcher 3 PS5 version. In fact now is the perfect time CDPR. Harken back to a time when folks thought you could do no wrong.
As expected but what a complete sh*tshow from management at CDPR. It was impossible to live up to the hype but the vanilla PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game should be a criminal offence
If this was about an unreleased game, it would be ok.
But talking about a delaying an update for a game that released one year ago completely broken just add more incompetence and mismanagement by CDPR to me.
Please do delay the PS5 version, I'd rather it release in 2022 and run smoothly/perfectly.
