Development of Marvel’s Wolverine for the PlayStation 5 is being led by Brian Horton, the creative director of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Despite this, he’s confirmed on Twitter that the title is, as expected, a full-length game and not a spin-off. Moreover, it sounds like it won’t have the light-hearted vibes of the web-slinging releases, instead opting for a “dark tone”.
Details on this game are light, and Sony’s already admitted that it’s in early development. We’re not intimately familiar with Insomniac Games’ structure, but we’d imagine the majority of the Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart teams have moved on to this, with the remainder of the company focusing on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Exciting times for the sleepless studio!

Embedded tweet: Mature tone
Huh? Surely if you're going to use question marks, it should be an actual quote?
Full size, mature tone is interestingly my search criteria on Grindr.
Does a mature tone mean a mature rating? I'm not sure how you can make a wolverine game otherwise.
I don't necessarily need it to be ultra gory like Origins Uncaged, but a single-player Wolverine game with the tone and mature content of Logan would be a personal joy. Also, I hope it's much more linear and not an open-world collect-a-thon. That works for Spider-Man, but it just doesn't seem right for a Wolverine game.
This needs to be an M / 18+ Game, Wolverine isn’t like Spider-Man, he kills people.
The bigger question is what genre... I'll assume it'll be a Devil May cry type game but that's not what Imsoniac is known for
@DualWielding I imagine it could be God Of War-ish (the 2018/Ragnarok kind). That makes sense to me. Obviously it could be totally different too
What I really want to know if it's going to be open world or an linear action game?
whatever they do, im going to be playing it cuz i know it'll be fun!
Never really been a huge Marvel fan but Insomniac did an awesome job with Spider-Man so I'm definitely keeping this game on my radar.
Might start reading some of it's comics to better understand the character.
@Enuo 🤔with blood And gore.intense violence.nudity.sexual content.strong language.and use of drugs and alcohol.word up son
the fact that a 2nd team is running this game means it might not be as far off as we think. maybe both games will be out in 2023 ( well one can hope). just give me a last of us meets wolverine type of game.
One thing I want is human violence. I dont want to be wolverine chopping up robots lol lemme chop up dudes.
Its an issue jedi fallen order had. Animals split in two but stormtroopers wearing lightsaber proof armour apparently
People are already speculating that the game will take place in Madripoor (Marvel's equivalent of Singapore) cos of some of the writing in the bar during the trailer, plus Wolverine had a big comic story there.
As for what the game will be like, I agree with @Voltan that it'll be like GoW 2018, big areas but mostly linear because I don't think an open world like Spider-man really works for Wolverine.
Also how cool would it be if on the Duelsense if every time you press a button to release his claws the controller vibrates from the bottom of the handles and shoots up to the top? Along with the speaker making the sound too, it will never get boring.
@AdamNovice I'd be surprised if they don't do that with the dual sense.
@SoulsBourne128 I can't see it being (and hope it isn't) an open world. Spidey is so centred on New York that it makes sense to have an open world around that city. Wolverine is nomadic and has spent decades striving for anonymity. A linear game makes far more sense for the character. I'd be surprised if they go for it, but a game that hard-cuts both locations and time periods would be pretty cool.
Sounds good to me. And I actually like Spider-Man: Miles Morales a little more than the first Spider-Man game, and I love that game, so having the creative director for Miles on board is a good thing. Looking forward to this. Insomniac is on a roll lately so my expectations will be high even though the game is a long ways off.
That’s reassuring. Miles Morales was like a watered down crap version of the last Spider-Man game
@kingbreww What didn’t you like? I actually thought Miles game was better.
@Voltan
A closer, over the shoulder camera angle like RE4 and GOW2018 would make the combat feel very personal. I think it would be a great choice.
I assume this will be a globe hopping level-based game, or at least a gated open world, kind of like God of War. A sandbox game doesn't make sense for Wolverine since he doesn't have a particularly interesting way to traverse great distances in a fun way, unless they give him Cyclops' motorcycle, but then is it still a Wolverine game?
They could allow him to climb everything with claws but I don't think that's what people want from a Wolverine game. They want tightly paced levels with visceral, but fluid action. The game that comes to mind for me is Metal Gear Rising.
And I agree with people who've said it doesn't need to be gory. I can't imagine Marvel approving an M-rated game for him. They saw the gangbusters that Spider-Man sold and will want another huge hit, especially with the X-Men sometime making their MCU debut. Maybe I'll be wrong, but they can go dark without making it super bloody, etc.
I hope it's a M title rather than T like spider-man. Don't need the gore like tlou 2, but at least there should be blood when wolverine stab someone with his claw.
Should be great with the Miles Morales director doing it
Tough to find fault with Insomniac but I'm just a little worried about their back. They've been carrying Sony so hard the past few years.
@ATaco - They pretty much carried the PS3 too with the Ratchet & Clank series and Resistance series too, not that I'm complaining, but it does make me wish they would divulge their secrets to other PlayStation Studios so that they too can develop and release multiple games at a time at a consistent pace and quality.
@Lightning_FF13 a "Bezerker Barrage" to a gut rip and a decapitation....
@RudeAnimat0r the last wolverine game on the ps3 sold really well and was super gory and violent..also was a decent game story wise untill the end which was a bit of a let down..the deadpool game..again really violent but still sold fairly well..both deadpool movies and the logan movie..extremly violent and graphic and happen to be 3 of the biggest earners at the box office for marvel...so theres a good bet that it may well be violent as heck...heres hoping.
‘Mature’ is exactly what this game needs and the direction I was hoping for a while Insomniac would try and evolve. Awesome news.
It does feel like they’ve announced this early so they can recruit more effectively and build a team. As this is something different from what they normally do.
@RBMango @RudeAnimat0r
I agree with you, it should be something like Batman Arkham Asylum.
@Northern_munkey Yeah, X-Men Origins probably sold well, but I doubt it sold more than 10m copies like Spider-Man. Quick googling returns less than 1m on PS3, whatever that number is worth. Also Logan, the movie, was a hit, but it was not a billiin dollar movie. Deadpool movies are the clear exceptions but I think Deadpool is an entirely unique character with lots of appeal beyond comic fans.
Who knows, time will tell. I just think they will be leaving a lot of money on the table if it's hyper violent.
@theheadofabroom that's video game "journalism" for you
@Grimwood Never change.
Throwing it out there but anyone reckon they might use the Rift Apart mechanic of moving areas in Wolverine and it’ll jump to his past? So instead of CGI flashbacks we actually visit the past.
Would use PS5 to max and slightly differ a mechanic already used by Isomniac.
@Just_2_milky Spiderman definitely kills people. Maybe not directly by slashing their throat out, but imagine the number of concussions/other serious injuries he leaves behind, the way he throws low level enemies around/throws heavy objects at them. Statistically some of those people are going to die, the rest are going to be a drain on the health system for a while. Presumably this is why Americans are all about a private healthcare system - Spiderman would be a massive drain on the NHS
Anything marvel is targetting children so yeah I kinda don’t believe them.
not into Marvel but we all know Wolverine and knowing Insomniac is making this... I probably will just have to pay my respect and get this day 1 and enjoy with some nice green kush
Berzerker rage best be a late game thing. MK levels of gore and violence, bodily dismemberment (and indeed regeneration), fountains of arterial blood spraying all over the walls.
God of War (the original, gory ones) with a Marvel skin.
@Steel76 @Cheems Don't forget Blade
Exciting stuff. Personally I'm expecting a slightly more linear game than Spider-Man, perhaps a bit more GoW-ish.
@danlk1ng You’re right in the sense that Spider-Man will stick an enemy to a building with wens that dissolve in an hour, but this is Wolverine, I want to cut people in half.
@Steel76 I guessed @Cheems was talking about Marvel since its acquisition by Disney - they've struggled to do anything that isn't child-friendly, probably because that leaves too many merchandising options on the table, and that's what Disney knows.
It may be different for video games though, especially given the degree of executive involvement versus a film or a TV show.
Sounds good to me. Hoping we get the classic costume too.
Open world with his motorcycle and easy to steal helicopters or gliders would be awesome. Madripoor as a neon drenched backdrop would be amazing. Global trek ala Uncharted would be dope. They really can't go wrong with this game for me
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
He's a bloke with massive indestructible nails/claws attached to his skeleton and he's gonna be tearing people apart with them. I'd say that's a pretty dark tone for sure 🤣
@nessisonett
Bruh
I will be highly disappointed if this is not a M rated game that lasts 15+ hours.
