Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will not release until 2023, and it’s probably safe to assume that Marvel’s Wolverine will not come out until after it, so the fact that Sony hasn’t announced PlayStation 4 versions shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Nevertheless, just to make crystal clear, developer Insomniac Games describes both titles as “coming exclusively to PS5”.
The Japanese giant has been criticised for releasing many of its flagship first-party titles on both the PS5 and PS4, but while we expect more cross-gen releases through 2022, we’d hazard that said period will conclude in 2023 – outside of a few exceptions, like MLB The Show, for example. Are you happy to hear that Sony is poised to leave PS4 behind?

I imagine God Of War might be the last 1st party PS4 game - in the AAA space anyway.
I thought we knew that. Insomniac ain't bout to develop for other consoles. Although we've seen stranger things happen. cough MLB The Show cough
Great. No holding back.
@Rafie More referring to the fact that they're not on PS4.
@get2sammyb Got it. No cross gen. Thanks, Sammy!
Since these two particular games won't come until 2023 (Wolverine probably even later) I'd be legit pissed if a game that released in the third year of PS5 or beyond was cross gen so hopefully this doesn't change
Yes. So late 2022/2023 is when we'll truly start to see what this gen is capable of.
And I don't mean just 4K 120FPS and reflections in puddles.
I'm hoping for innovative game design and better AI, the like that is impossible on the last gen.
And that’s good!!
Bookmarking this page for when Wolverine gets delayed and it's a dual Gen release game with PS6. 😂
As someone who has given up even looking for a PS5 this seems obvious, we're talking 2 years after launch even before the inevitable game delays kick in. GoWR hasn't even been dated yet, probably mid-2022 at the earliest due to HFW in Feb, if no delays there, big if considering cross-Gen, they don't want to be the next Cyberpunk. At some point Sony needs to actually "know generations". Xbox Series may have several exclusives by 2023.
It’s going to be awesome to see what they can with both of these titles. They’ve now got the experience of doing R&C so can hopefully lean on that to make something truly outstanding.
It was going to happen eventually to be fair. Makes sense considering these games are some way off.
Hopefully all AAA games move over to PS5 only by 2nd quarter of 2022... It's been about time to start designing for new hardware without fallback mechanics.
It’s coming out in 2023. I don’t see it being cross gen unless if there aren’t enough PS5 consoles sold because of the pandemic.
About damn time, can’t wait for the shackles to be off 🙌🏻
As it should be, it should be that way now. Let the PS4 die. I don’t want new games to be held back any longer by the old hardware of the PS4. It hinders world building, animation, AI, and physics.
I’m certainly happy that they may be leaving last gen behind now. People don’t understand the amazing opportunities brought about by the extra processing speed and throughput. Things are going to get wild.
Of course I understand that supply of PS5 is an issue currently, but given the release dates likely for these games I don’t think that’s something that should be a concern.
I'll remain skeptical until they actually launch. I know this is Insomniac saying this, but I don't trust Sony to not coerce them to make them cross-gen.
Not happy at all to see H2, GOW2, GT7 and more being released on PS4. I know these games are long in development but having to wait two more years to see a proper next gen experience is a bit underwhelming.
@MattSilverado yeah it really dampens the excitement I think.
With Wolverine probably 2024/25 no way they'll be releasing that on PS4...right?
By the way, highly likely to coincide with Disney bringing back the X-Men (presumably new Logan) into the MCU so wins all round for PlayStation.
These will be system sellers, provided there are systems to sell
Wolverine I'm thinking 2024. So yeah, you'd hope the focus would be on ps5 by then... £80 for the pro version.
I'm really interested to see how insomniac handle this. Obviously Wolverine can't move around an open world like Spiderman. It will be cool if he can use transport and there's more a focus on enclosed areas. If they do have it an open world though how awesome would it be if the hulks in it too!
@rjejr. Sounds like a hater.xbox still getting theyre ass whoop by ps5.word up son
Will Insomniac Wolverine be set in the same universe as Insomniac Spider Man/Miles, could he in fact appear in Spider Man 2 I wonder?
@Lyonjak I think they have actually said that Marvel's Wolverine is set in the Marvel's Spider-Man universe. I really hope that this is setting up a full on Marvel PlayStation Universe
End of 2022 should be the cut off point, games can scale really well these days so I don't think games being cross gen takes away all that much, if any.
2023 will be almost 10 years of support.
Again the strange console mentality. My PC game is not being "held back" on my 3080 because it can also play on a 1050Ti.
That is not how that works. You simply do not see the graphics sliders on consoles.
You just stuck playing 900p/30fps with outdated global illumination for 3 more years because of a false narrative
They should have left PS4 behind for HFW, GT7, and GoW:R. Sure, PS4 owners would miss out on them, but they also wouldn't have been held back by weaker hardware.
@Agramonte the gaming world needs to hear this! Can I make this my sig for other gaming sites that allow sigs?
This is good news its time to move on
This is good, saves them from the controversial upgrade fees and the last gen console won't hold this game back. I say this while still not owning a PS5 and still has a base PS4. Well, hopefully I can get one by late 2022, if not, early 2023
Good, I will be really disappointed if sony 1st party games in the coming year still cross-gen.
I don't believe it. I expect that the PS4 versions will be announced next year.
@OmegaStriver
Well, not 'die', it has an amazing library of games and will one day be talked about as a classic, like the PS1+2.
We'll just say, take a bow, PS4, good night.
Fingers crossed. Should’ve been the way from day one.
@AhmadSumadi Sure... but hope most know this and just play hating on PS5 😉
@art_of_the_kill
It would have made for a much less messy situation to the whole cross gen upgrade release fiasco that's for sure.
But then with Xbox Smart Delivery Sony would get a lot of backlash so you can't win either way. And they'd miss out on the potential couple of thousand sales from folk who can't yet get a PS5.
I must admit, a PlayStation Smart Delivery type of thing would have caused much less problems.
You get one disc/download and the console will ensure you get the better version each time, you can play it on either and easily get the superior option when you're ready.
Credit where credit is due, Microsoft did better there.
@GADG3Tx87 not really , there are games not playable on the xbox. is it because people don't have a ps5 , or they have a ps5 and think they'll just buy the ps4 copy for less money and get the ps5 copy?
@twitchtvpat
I just thought it would be less messy. One disc/download that will always ensure you play the correct version. No upgrade fees and you can't cheat the system by buying the cheaper copy because there isn't one.
Just my thought, I think Sony messed up a bit.
People who later get a PS5 just put their disc in and it downloads the updated assets and features, only needing one disc or download purchase.
I'm surprised Sony was able to negotiate another Marvel property only on Playstation. Spiderman I get since Sony just kind of has a history at this point with the character but Wolverine came way out of left field.
@Korgon i'm sure they see how good of a job they did with spiderman , so i can see why they would make the deal. i'm pretty excited about this.
@GADG3Tx87 i do agree they could have handled it better. but we all know the much better version of the game will obviously be the ps5 version.
@rjejr Why did you give up on looking for a ps5? They are really to get.
I would expect nothing less. If a 2023 game and a 2024+ game are still being developed as crossgen, that would be a really tough sell in justifying why for Sony. Last gen needs to be left behind at some point and the 2023/2024 mark is halfway through the console’s lifecycle.
What's the point of a shiny new console if your old one can play the same games? They can't straddle the line forever.
Thank God! I'm tired of old tech holding back games from being their best.
@Saucymonk Too aggravating. You'd see a tweet and it could literally be sold out in under a minute. Or you have to order online for in store pickup and there is never one in a store near me. Scalpers are buying them up, retailers are forcing bundles, which should be illegal. Plus my kid went back to college after being home for 3 months when I was trying, so now waiting for Christmas. Though not optimistic. I bought my first ever 4k TV in February for $1k wanting a PS5 for R&C, but this is nuts. I'm old w/ health issues and all the aggravation that comes with owning an old house and a new car, I can't take any more stress in my life.
@playstation1995 Hating what? I'm an old man yelling at clouds so you'll need to be a little more specific. 🤷♂️
Not yesterday though, I thought the show was good. Had I thought it was bad then I would know what you were referring to, but I liked it so...
@Korgon It probably wasn't hard to negotiate another Marvel property only on Playstation. Disney really only cares about money. The conversation probably went like:
Sony: "You like money, we like money, and Insomniac's games make money. Give us IP"
Disney: looks at the other recent failed attempt at licensed games from other developers "You got a point." hands over Wolverine "Go make us money"
@Floki
You make a good point I retract my previous statement.
Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way to become what you are meant to be.
@Korgon Yeah... Marvel's Spider-Man sold well over like 20 million copies since 2018. Miles Morales sold like what... 4.1 Million in 3 days. It took Marvel's Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order 6 month to reach 1 million.
Wolverine will probably out sell both Marvel's Midnight Suns and Guardians of the Galaxy combined
@Bleachedsmiles teams behind all the batman games managed make decent open WORLDs but Sony's insomniac games however are on a different lvl of course they could make a open WORLD wolverine i bet they even add Forrest area like on Logan ( film) climb trees get about ect
Make sure that I can see something that can't be done on the PS4 other than those in the visuals department. If a game can be downported to a weaker system through cutting back on visuals alone, then it's not utilizing the more powerful system to the fullest.
It's good because those of us who doesn't have the playstation 5 yet can wait it out until Sony do something about those scalpers who bought their games illegally
Great news, games should not be held back by past-gen hardware.
