We’ve already published our Tales of Arise PS5 review and Life Is Strange: True Colors PS5 review, so you may be wondering where our NBA 2K22 review is. This one is going to take a little while, we’re afraid: that’s because due to the online nature of the release we only received review code until about an hour before launch day, 10th September.
Our goal with this game is to focus on the PlayStation 5 version first and bring you a full review, however due to the significant differences between next-gen and current-gen, we’ll also be taking a look at the PS4 edition as well. Whether that ends up being a full review or a Mini Review is undetermined at this stage, but there will be two reviews for this game when all’s said and done.
Our first impressions are relatively positive, although the new open world format does come with some caveats, namely loading into and out of the City, which is the game’s sandbox hub. The gameplay feels a little faster, which we like, and the pace of matches appears to have been sped up. We’re also quite fond of the new blocking systems, which have been rewritten and feel very natural.
As always with this series, despite the criticism it attracts, there’s absolutely loads to do – a worrying array of modes and features, actually. So, it’ll take us a few days to dig in and explore everything it has to offer. In the meantime, we’re compiling an NBA 2K22 guide, including Best Builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer and All Locker Codes, so check that out if you’re looking for more on the game.

Wouldn't it be funny if the 2K22 review was just a copy and paste of last year's NBA 2K review?
@HotGoomba For once that wouldn’t actually work due to the massive changes to the game’s story mode!
@HotGoomba that is what IGN did with the FIFA 21 Legacy Edition review. They just copied and pasted it from their FIFA 20 Legacy Edition review

Take your time. Nobody would read it anyway.
Not a fan of the NBA games. But the new open world format on PS5 has me interested this year.
Ill wait for the review see how that actually works in the end.
Wish there was a graphic setting that looked like those covers... I would buy it just for that.
Are the visuals improved? Imo the last one looked pretty good on PS5 but I'm wondering if they did even better!
"NBA 2k22 shaped up to be the best NBA game out there, but heavily use of microtransactions and ads can take from experience."
Here, I helped you with the verdict. Irony here is that it's the only NBA game out there and latest iteration will always be the best, even if it is garbage.
I like 2k gameplay…. I haven’t been interested in online play for over a decade because how they’ve handled it.
So what I like to do is wait till the new one comes out and I buy last year’s game used for a deep discount. Always stay 1 yr behind and don’t contribute to 2k’s antics.
I know already how my favorite team did the previous season in real life and I see if I can do better than that.
There seems to be a glitch in My Team If you use Custom uniforms and play online, your players appear to be invisible.
Man, a lot of negativity here. If you're not interested in the game why even bother commenting?
The review will just be a phishing scam e-mail sprinkled with some State Farm ads and a few coupons thrown in for good measure.
I'm curious to know if you can play against the AI in the City.
Only a FOOL would pay full price for this game
