Sony has just released another PlayStation 5 system software update. A couple of weeks following the arrival of PS5's largest firmware update yet, a fresh patch is available, and ready to download and install right now.
The latest PS5 firmware update version is 21.02-04.02.00, and it comes in at 913.7MB. Don't go in expecting this update to make big, noticeable changes, though — everyone's favourite patch note is making a comeback.
"This system software update improves system performance."
Close your eyes. Let the words echo in your mind. This statement marks our past, and will come to us again in the future. It's relaxing, isn't it? Almost meditative, transcendent.
Once you're back in the room, get that PS5 firmware update downloaded to keep your console in top shape. If you'd like to read more firmware-related waffle (and we know you do really, come on), check out our list of 12 PS5 firmware updates we want to see.

Who did you upset Stephen to have to actually write an article about something this mundane? Did you take the wrong yoghurt out of the fridge and ignore the post-it note stuck to it? 😁 At least you made it humourous 😁👍
Ooh, this is exciting - and only the very beginning of the journey to ultimate stability
@Integrity I live for firmware update articles
@Quintumply which was your favourite? I remember one from a few years back, September 2008 for PS3, v2.41, that was only available in Japan. I was so jealous!
It’s the update about nothing…not that there’s anything wrong with that 😉
Moreso for Disney to fix rather than Sony, but still waiting for the Disney+ app to finally stream in 4K/HDR.
They've finally added the label of 4K under their titles, but they still only stream in HD/SDR. (first world problems at its finest xD)
One day, it might be as stable and performant as the PS4 - until then...probably fixing a load of things that got broken in the last one.
@Integrity My most hated one was the PS Store update for the PS3 (2.20 or 2.30?) Took out my 60Gb fatty and forced me to lose all my save game data!
@Integrity Amazing taste
@kingbreww I get it
@TobaccoJacko no patch notes for you!
Was hoping the next one would be the VRR update tbh. And wishing for it to also include 3D audio support for soundbars and av systems
Ah, sweet sweet stability.
Wait?! What? Where am I? This isn't Nintendo Life.
if i've put release notes like this at work , i'll get toasted
More likely a bunch of dumb ads for games I’ll never play.
Hope it fixes the game icons! I hate what some of them have changed to, with Sackboy, both Spider-Man games and Guilty Gear Strive being the worst affected.
[EDIT] Nope, unfortunately not 😔
I hope this update fixes the icons on the homescreen.
@Perryg92 I really like Disney+ as well. In Germany we have the issue that the Star Wars Movies (except Episode 9 and Mandalorian series) are not available with the English Atmos Sound.
Already had a chat with the support but nothing happened.
@luisterr I’m happy to see icons without this red tag (PlayStation classics). Happy with the way it is currently.
@kingbreww hoping for VRR until end of this year too!!
This update from today only will be a bugfix follow up for the big update from September. No new features.
More importantly where is the update for the ps4? It's been over a couple weeks with the not-so-stable update. Sony are getting a bit too big for their boots tbh.
"Close your eyes. Let the words echo in your mind. This statement marks our past, and will come to us again in the future. It's relaxing, isn't it? Almost meditative, transcendent" Haha. Well done! It makes me wonder why this wasn't added to Ghost of Tsushima as a meditative option. Hit x for improved system performance.
Hmm, I have turned off update while in standby mode but sometimes the PS5 still updates in standby mode??? Well it happened a while back and I am sure I selected on the PS5 don't update while on standby. It happened when I put my PS5 in standby mode while playing the AMAZING:P Ghost of Tsushima then when I went back to the game I had to restart it again. Very odd

Words of the gods
Wow. I thought my PS5 was stable enough. What with the base and all. Oh well, I'll take all the stability I can get.
We want folders that would be boss
Just curious but are these "firmware" updates really hardware level BIOS updates or simply OS software updates?
As long as there's no dualsense update as well, I'm fine. Don't make me use cables Sony, it's 2021 ffs.
@kingbreww On the plus side, my Sony Bravia TV got a VRR update yesterday, so Sony is figuring it out.
No, VRR still isn't there on the PS5 menu after this update even when I enable it on the TV.
Update - looks like the firmware update broke the integration with Genshin Impact - can not log in to play from my PS5. It was fine yesterday, and works on my phone (linked accounts).
Don't judge me, my kids got me hooked.
UPDATE: Apparently a game-specific problem, also reported by users who have NOT applied the firmware update (according to Twitter). PS4 version works, including on the PS5 running in backwards compat, if you have the bandwidth/space to download it. Note that the default control scheme for the PS4 and PS5 are DIFFERENT, so you may want to remap things before you get into any fights.
Yea maybe you should stop making fun of ‘improve system performance’ because it’s been proven to be real. Just saying 😅
Update broke Genshin Impact so no PS5's users can log in so thanks Sony.
@RobN I played this on my pro all yesterday. Finally got a bit more hooked, unlocked a few more characters, too. Also, managed to fix my base ps4 after the 9.0 update just now, so happy days. Guess Sony will leave Mihoyo to sort the problem, though because they're slack af atm.
Oh no! I hope it's not mandatory. I'll lose like 2 hours of progress in Last of Us 2 thanks to permadeath's stupid no saving.
Edit: F you Sony and Naughty Dog. My PS5 installed the update automatically. Lost 2 hours of progress.
@Jayofmaya Genshin can be fun to play with other people, too - your four-character active limit gets cut down by the number of people you play with, so if you play with one person you only have two - but then THEY have two (which can include characters you don't have), and one of yours and one of theirs is on the field at the same time, so you can have twice the firepower (or dramatically more, from your perspective, if the other player is higher level). For what it is, it's a pretty impressive game - interesting fighting mechanics, decent story, and constant new content to try to keep you hooked.
It's not broken on my PS4 - first time I've really wanted remote play from my PS4 to my PS5. I can't play much on the phone - it works (and you can connect accounts so you can play the same account on PC, phone, or Playstation now), but I can't handle the controls without a controller. In a pinch I can do some of the daily tasks that don't involve much fighting.
Folders and themes.when Sony when as it's not really a lot of effort to put those features in
@RobN yay, that’s why I was hoping. I heard they finally enabled it on their TV’s so, yeh
@Rocky1972 I think it took 4-5 years to add folders to the PS4 (they were in the PS3), so I figure we've got at least a couple more years to go folder-less.
Just the update I was waiting for!
@RobN Yeah, I found quite early on sometimes higher level players drop in and smash everything for you haha I explored Dragonspine before Liyue (haven't done anything in the latter except making the map visible), have it at 80% complete but having trouble doing the story mission that will get rid of the wind in the centre. Also have the same sort of percentage in all the Mondstat places. Then I did main quest and everything melted haha I still haven't done the dungeons for the weapon level Ascension stuff, though.
Yeah, I was going to try downloading it on my phone but I figured it would be pretty poor compared, too.
does this mean i can keep the PlayStation 5 in rest mode? done that once it was a factory reset to bring it back, ps4 ive always kept in rest mode.
