Correction: In this article, we originally suggested that Battlefield 2042 has a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade, but that's not technically true. You'll only be entitled to the Cross-Gen Bundle if you purchase the PS5 version of the game digitally. Buying the PS4 version of the game digitally will not get you the Cross-Gen Bundle. Of course, if you don't have a PS5 yet you can still buy the PS5 version digitally, and download and play the PS4 version until you transition to the next-gen console.
Apologies for the error — we're sure you'll appreciate this is a confusing situation.
Original Article: Buying the bog-standard digital version of Battlefield 2042 on either the PlayStation 5 or PS4 will entitle you to its cross-gen counterpart, meaning effectively you’ll be getting a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade without needing to splash out on one of the more expensive tiers. Previously, you had to purchase either the Gold or Ultimate Editions of the game to be eligible for Dual Entitlement.
“We realise that for many, next-gen hardware is still hard to come by,” a spokesperson for developer DICE said. "We want as many Battlefield fans as possible to start the journey with us on day one, and we want to give those players the peace of mind that their progress carries over if they get a new system this holiday season, or beyond.”
The game features full cross-save and cross-progression between PlayStation consoles, so everything you do will transition seamlessly between devices. It’s worth stressing, however, that if you’re planning to purchase the basic Blu-ray version of Battlefield 2042, there’ll be no upgrade option, so just keep that in mind before you buy physically.

It's a good move from EA but it is mildly disappointing they are only honouring this for digital editions. I guess the "free" upgrade is actually hidden behind the higher cost of digital purchases making it not so free afterall.
When EA does it bit Sony doesn't.
@Ward_ting Digital versions are just standard RRP and the same price Game/Gamestop usually charge, the likes of Amazon and Supermarkets sell at a loss.
@Ward_ting looking forward to my £40 purchase on the Indian PS Store
@WallyWest not always the case..i've seen plenty of games (new releases) on the ps4 where in game they have been £49.99 for a standard version but on the ps store they have been £59.99 for the exact same version so its not always the case..digital versions should really be cheaper as theres no disc, packaging or storage space..no man handling so no having to pay somebody to stock the shelves..digital can be a real rip off...
@Northern_munkey @WallyWest this has also been my general experience. In fact Game at the moment is selling it for £54.99 whereas it is £59.99 on the PS Store.
@Ward_ting i used to buy games from game but after i bought my ps4(destiny special edition white console) and about 5 games too i was rather pissed off when i later discovered that all my loyalty points had somehow evaporated into the ether..even after producing my receipt they still refused to honor the points..i will never buy from game again..scum..
We live in a world where EA is more consumer friendly than Sony, a former pioneer of pro consumer mentality.
Here's to EA making a glorious comeback!
I wonder if this speaks in anyway as to how the game is selling sans campaign? Maybe the decision is hurting sales, not that they would say, obviously...
So i felt like i was forced to buy the £90 gold edition as i have a ps5 but wanted the ps4 edition aswell so i could also play the game with friends and now theyve gone and changed it. Could of saved myself £30!
@Gunners85 Get a refund?
@Divergent95 Given the choice of ea free ps5 upgrade but the game filled with mtx vs sony pay $10 but there isn't mtx on the game, I choose the later.
I prefer if sony upgrade their games for free, but at least sony gave most of their 1st party games 60 fps patch.
@wiiware Fair point! But if we go back to HFW, they wanted to charge a hefty price for basically faster loading and 60fps support.
I don't hate Sony but let's stop making excuses for them.
I'll say this for a millionth time, companies are not our friends!
Digital dual entitlement ✌️
@Divergent95 Still a better solution then a gold pass, several editions or microtransactions.
@Flaming_Kaiser We'll see if Sony and other publishers keep their promises.
Time will tell.
@Divergent95 I think is the only that stays away from MT as far as i know. Lets hope they stay the course.
@Divergent95 I'm just being realistic, while I want free upgrade as much as everybody else, sony already decide they want to charge more for ps5 support. I'm satisfied as long as there's 60 fps patch and upgrade path for sony 1st party games.
@Divergent95 Oh, and let's not forget Sony earned more than any other company between 2019 and 2020 (pre-price hike) and about four times as much as EA (nearly $20bn vs $5bn).
People like to talk about paying devs, inflation, and game dev costs, but these aren't struggling companies. They could easily absorb the costs, they just don't want to see their profits shrink.
@Richnj Ah, the "beauty" of capitalism.
Why have $5bn when you can have $100bn?
At least the impressions are overall very positive, with criticism directed towards performance issues and bugginess.
Hopefully, DICE can polish the thing before launch.
So it’s like GT7 if I get it right?
‘PS5: Gran Turismo 7 (Digital)
You will have access to the PS4 digital version of Gran Turismo 7.’
@Richnj If they keep releasing quality i wont complain. No MT, ads, broken day one releases, copy and paste games, gold editions from day one so i rather pay the tenner then go the big way of the big names (EA, Ubisoft, 2K, Rockstar).
@Northern_munkey I remember when they tried to spin that the higher price for digital was to appease the brick and mortar stores. Now I think it's more a case of either we're used to it so why adjust it...or maybe Sony/Microsoft take a bigger cut on digital.
Just get some cheaper credit to even it out
I thought this was an open beta. Was disappointed to try and play last night to see it's early access for preorders right now...an open beta that's currently locked shut.
@Bleachedsmiles to be fair its always stated you were required to pre order to gain access..
EA expired the free next-gen upgrade offer for Madden 21 on the day of Madden 22's release.
I made it a point to get a used copy earlier that week, claim the upgrade, and then return it. EA hasn't seen a cent from me since Burnout 3 (everything I've played of them since has been used or from Plus) and I'm looking forward to keeping that habit up. Especially when they are now making the cross-gen situation even more confusing.
A bit annoying. I pre-ordered the Gold Edition to get the PS5/PS4 version so my son can play it on his PS4 as well. I wouldn't have spent so much if I had known.
