Fans are divided on the overall quality of Shenmue III, but it’s looking like there’ll be less debate over Adult Swim and Crunchyroll’s adaptation: Shenmue: The Animation is looking ace. This brand new trailer includes scenes from both Shenmue and Shenmue II, and everything from the animation to the Shenhua voiceover seems spot-on to us.
The anime is due out in 2022 and will span 13 full-length episodes. Series creator Yu Suzuki is serving as an executive producer on the project, while Chikara Sakurai is directing at Telecom Animation Film. The best news about this project is that it will almost certainly keep the series in the limelight, which increases the chances of a fourth instalment eventually seeing the light of day.

Do you know any places where sailors hang out around here?
I put over $100 into the Shenmue 3 kickstarter having been a big fan of the Dreamcast games. I enjoyed Shenmue 3. It felt like a Dreamcast continuation and frankly, I think that it was a great move making it feel very similar in nature to the first two games. The only thing I wish is that it would have moved the story forward a bit more than it did and the stamina addition was unnecessary and a bit annoying to have to deal with initially.
Many in the community are hoping that the 4th game will be announced along side the release of the anime next year. If it's not... odds are that the anime will be the only ending that fans get.
That said, I'm not big on the anime scene. I've seen some but never got into it. Regardless of that, I plan to buy the series when it releases. It'll be the first anime I'll have bought in 20 years.
Oooh, that does look good! Has it been confirmed who’s voicing Ryo?
Tristan Taylor is finally going to be a main character!
I see.
@GamingFan4Lyf Came here to say this.
This might be silly, but I was almost moved to tears seeing this actually existing. Of course I do hope for a fourth game (and possibly fifth) in a perfect world, but realistically I think this is our best shot at receiving a conclusion to this epic story. Anybody who hasn't played Shenmue at it's time probably won't understand the apeal, which is so frustrating, but I hope this might be accessible for newcomers.
I also hope that this anime might pave the way for a Yakuza anime adaptation. I've been puzzled why that hasn't already been done considering how perfect the serious drama mixed with the batsh** crazy would translate into anime.
Just a thought. If they made a shenmue 4 with graphics that look like this, would it cost less? If so,go for it.
I loved the trailer, will definitely be checking out the anime at some point!
@tameshiyaku Agreed I'd love to see a Season 2 which focuses on Shenmue 3 and beyond. Sadly the 13 confirmed episodes will only focus on Games 1 & 2.
As for a Yakuza anime, hopefully the Shenmue anime performs well enough! I definitely plan to buy it on Blu-Ray.
We'll see! Sega also did a fine job bringing valkyria chronicles and persona to anime a while back.
