It's been a long, long time since Sony had any real say in the Japanese software charts, which makes this week's list especially interesting. Not one, not two, not three, but four PlayStation games sit at the top of the charts. They're all PS4 titles, granted, but this is still an incredibly rare win for a company other than Nintendo.
The new Trails game, Kuro no Kiseki, takes the number one spot with just over 50,000 sales. It's followed by FIFA 22 (26,000), Lost Judgment (20,400), and Melty Blood: Type Lumina (18,900). We're close to rubbing our eyes in disbelief.
- [PS4] The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki (Falcom, 09/30/21) – 50,114 (New)
- [PS4] FIFA 22 (Electronic Arts, 10/01/21) – 25,936 (New)
- [PS4] Lost Judgment (Sega, 09/24/21) – 20,393 (132,245)
- [PS4] Melty Blood: Type Lumina (DELiGHTWORKS, 09/30/21) – 18,833 (New)
- [NSW] FIFA 22 Legacy Edition (Electronic Arts, 10/01/21) – 13,385 (New)
- [NSW] Melty Blood: Type Lumina (DELiGHTWORKS, 09/30/21) – 11,604 (New)
- [NSW] WarioWare: Get It Together! (Nintendo, 09/10/21) – 10,862 (137,179)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 10,005 (4,073,252)
- [NSW] Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot + A New Power Awakens Set (Bandai Namco, 09/24/21) – 9,897 (51,971)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 9,611 (2,214,466)
Of course, PlayStation's enjoying a particularly busy period at the minute, with both the PS5 and PS4 swamped in new releases. We'd like to say that that platform could be gathering some newfound momentum in Japan, but we all know that these games will be swallowed up by the Big N within a few weeks.
Enjoy it while it lasts!

I just feel sorry for all those who bought the game at number 5. Boy oh boy did they get shafted.
@Integrity It also became the fastest selling Switch FIFA game in the UK, and at retail actually outsold the Xbox Series release, accounting for 5% of total sales at retail.
So a lot of people got shafted, and EA is laughing it up.
My little PlayStation-blue fanboy heart is happy. 💙
Interesting that Melty Blood PS4 outsold the Switch. Did they come out at the same time on both platforms?
@ThomasHL Yep. Could just be because PlayStation is generally a much more popular console for fighting games (and Melty Blood doesn't have any kind of cross-play).
@ThomasHL Fighting Games always sell best on Playstation, so its not suprising. And yes, ofc it launched on PS4/Switch the same day
Is relevant, though? The Japanese market is much more focused on mobile nowadays and these numbers are not that impressive.
It feels like the Japanese charts have become way less important than the western ones.
@Pat_trick don't forget this is just physical sales.
Games I actually played on the Japanese top 10?... shocking.
Japan is so monotone and cuts out so much of the modern gaming industry that this chart is irrelevant at this point.
Love Lost Judgement. Glad it is doing well.
Great to see Kuro no Kiseki doing well. I know its a long way from coming to the West but it's a for sure Day 1 purchase when it does.
Also happy for Lost Judgment I've been obsessed with that game since I started it.
It's great that Playstation is getting some love in Japan. Though the top 4 will have to move aside for Metroid Dread tomorrow.
feels good to see my 1 digit added in that 50,114 number for Kuro no Kiseki. the tweaks they did to the battle & orbment systems actually are quite different from Sen but has the same feel and flow as all the other Kiseki games. definitely enjoying my time with it so far.
People were acting like Nintendo won the imaginary console wars when they took all the spots in Japan. Turns out that if a company makes games that people want to play, they'll go ahead and play them regardless of what console it's on.
