Rockstar has finally, officially announced the existence of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition. As has long been rumoured (and leaked), the collection will include three GTA titles: Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The Trilogy is coming to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
However, Rockstar's keeping quiet on the collection's actual enhancements. It says that more information is "coming soon", so keep your eyes peeled. We're not expecting any significant overhauls โ Rockstar wants the games to retain their look and feel โ but we're still keen to see if any minor gameplay changes are made.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy is out this year, but we don't have a date yet. Are you excited to jump back into these classic sandbox titles? Follow the damn train in the comments section below.

MY BODY IS READY
They also will not be selling the old versions starting next week. Grab em fast!
I mean, sure ok. Now tell us how itโs different from the GTA Trilogy already available on the PS Store.
I'm less excited for this now. I was hoping for a more significant overhaul. Still, I'll keep an eye on it - I love these games, particularly Vice City.
Just please give us 60fps even for the Switch, I'll definitely get the trilogy there.
The Trilogy The Definitive Edition. That just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? ๐
I was hoping this year. We need a date!
I'm really hoping for 60fps can't wait to play these again.
Yayโฆ.
So where that RDR2 PS5 version at?
Lmao what a load. Now Rockstar are recycling even older GTA ๐๐๐
Zero chance Iโll support this even for free ๐
Hope you can buy them individually. I only want Vice City.
@ScottyG I'm with you. One of the most sprawling and exciting R* games ever. 60fps is all I ask.
What a trailer! I mean, how informative, interesting...yeah..
I really hope they add checkpoints. I love San Andreas and Vice City, but having to redo missions all over again due to simple mistakes suuuuuuucks.
There will be significant graphical overhauls I'm sure. Rockstar would never flog the same game years later.
How did GTA IV suddenly become the redheaded stepchild???
Finally the worst kept secret of R* actually makes it's announcement!
I have some thinking to do, invest in GTA V PS5 or Trilogy, I think it will be the trilogy somehow...
Iโm interested, but Iโm expecting it to be overpriced.
Sooo actually squeezing this in before GTA5 PS5 which was announced a year and a half ago? Cool.
There's no enhancements. They still run at sub-HD at 20fps. $70 price point plus $20 DLC unlocks per game for codes to be enabled.
Maybe Rockstar will show some TLC towards GTA IV and its 2 expansions by remastering them for PS4 and PS5 in the foreseeable future.
Well its finally been revealed it exists...now to await some sort of gameplay reveal & details! Eg: Did Take Two finally spring the $$ to restore the full glorious music tracks,especially Vice City?๐ค
Still wary just what sort of job they'll have done given the so-so PS2 Classics versions...& knowing Take Two,won't be cheap either....look at LA Noire, still $45 or so even when its 50% off in my neck of the woods!๐
@nessisonett Yeah they themselves have to make a video how these games blow the games that are already playable on PS5 out of the water, it better not be just a little resolution bump and call it a generation till the PS6 collection.
Just fix the bugs and I'll definitely buy them.
@Just2Milky Where did you hear they will not be selling the old versions next week? That could indicate its releasing next week.
Expanded and Enhanced, I'm sure
@Gamer_Girl_ There is absolutely NO WAY they charge 70 for this,when games like crash trilogy and spyro trilogy remake cost 39.99. Maybe 50.00 tops.
I'd be interested in playing these again - particularly Vice City - provided the soundtrack is intact, and they have refined the control scheme
Would it have been better to call it โGrand Theft Auto: The Definitive Trilogyโ?
It's been years and years since I touched any of the PS2 GTA games. I still have fond memories of SA and VC.
BONESAW IS READY
@hulkie https://www.ign.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-trilogy-definitive-edition-announced
If it remains its classic look and feel, it wont be 60fps. Too much game engine and physics changes. Forcing 60fps on pc version breaks the physics. Gunna have to be a mighty big upgrade but hopefully its a rockstar project and not an outside source porting it like with the ps3 san andreas
Will be interested to see what changes there are to movement, how the game handles checkpoints and what the soundtrack is like before I dip. Tbh, they sound like perfect switch titles, comfort food you can play on the go or when the fam are watching awful TV on the big television!
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: Definitive Editon: Directors Cut: Revengance: Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series
How did I get goosebumps for a series of games Iโve literally purchased 4 times already? Hahahahaha.
Really looking forward to these. Again.
I might partake. Vice City was bangin, San Andreas was great (you can't tell me you didn't rock out to Toto's Hold The Line when you were tooling around in the boonies) and 3 was...actually the one I played least and would like to get into.
We all know this is the case of moneygrab. I don't feel the need for this when we can all play the originals. They're readily available... I know, let's release a new version (which is the same) but sharper and remove the old games so people HAVE to buy the new version.
What a flat announcement. No trailer, no screenshots, no nothing. Guess i don't expect anything more from Rockstar. I don't remember the last time they got me excited with their announcements. Maybe its because they don't really make games anymore. Their just more of a GaaS company now.
@Gamer_Girl_
Indeed they will not announce GTA 6 for at least months before GTA V on ps5 has been fully digested by the community. Then maybe, just maybe ,they will announce it.
Even 2024 is starting to sound optimistic. I'm fast losing interest though
I don't want it... I NEED IT!!
Vice City is all Iโm after here, hopefully we can get them separately?
Don't get your hopes up guys - this is post GTAV Rockstar we're dealing with. This will be a slightly tweaked port at best.
As long as the controls have been updated Iโm all in, that version on PS4 digital I just canโt get to grips with. I played this to death on PS2, even when finished just driving around collecting my earnings
@Danloaded I'd so pay for that ๐คฃ
This could be promising. As an old and avid fan of the series, I want nothing more than to revisit GTA San Andreas. However, having seen the GTAV PS5 "enhanced" version, I'm not very hopeful that these will be any different than the originals.
My hope is that they improve controls and general gameplay, making it smoother. (I haven't played Mass Effect remasters yet but I hear they've done a good job on modernizing the controls and gameplay so it doesn't feel aged) That'd be really amazing and worth the money for sure.
About time.can't wait I will definitely buy it on my ps4 pro.that made my day.3 legendary games.word up son
I'm just tired of companies shoving old stuff down our throats
GTA Trilogy: Expanded & Enhanced
@kingbreww but how are they going to turn a profit without your support?
@nessisonett most certainly 60fps and 4k Res. No more inconsistent pace 30 FPS. It was good on San Andreas, but the vice city was really struggling. However, I hope they retain the feel of original atmosphere in games. I hated PS3 version of San Andreas with all my guts. PS2 version was so much better oh every level
@Rob_230
Fully agree!!
I'll only buy this with updated camera controls for 3 and VC. SA still holds up nicely for a old game. I really want to be able to move the camera while moving around.
Everything else is bonus.
That said, I keep my expectations in check as Rockstar ain't the glorious company it used to be. I won't be surprised if this edition is overpriced and lacks any substantial improvements!!
I love that tune from GTA3. Truly the golden age of R* for me. Again though I already own them all so unless the upgrades are substantial which I doubt I'll pass.
@Broosh
Reminds me of โThe Transformers: The Movie.โ
Translation: "rather than deliver new games or IPs with the enormous amount of money we have made off you in the past decade or more, we have instead decided to make More money off you by re-releasing the same games we already made money off you from before!"
"but wait, surely you say, thee must be some incentive, some major enhancements to justify this level of profiteering? Well of course just look at our GTA 5 Next gen re release trailer..... oh wait....., well *****, ..... yah we are just cash 'grabbin"
"but hey....Apple, Activison, EA, Naughty Dog, and others do it too, and you idiots continued to buy the same game over and over for years and years.... so we cool right!"
lmfao. nope, not me Rockstar, not me
@Yaycandy
Iโm hoping itโs based on the PC version. That was the one I owned back in the day (it was the first PC DVD game that I ever owned) and it was pretty cool maxing out the draw distance and running it at four times the resolution of the console version. The game was surprisingly playable on M&K too, which I liked a lot. Plus the custom soundtrack station.
It was locked at 30FPS though. I built that rig to play FEAR on mostly high settings. So I was disappointed in that regard.
Hopefully updated controls and I hope vice city trophies are different than the PS2 classic version
@hi_drnick I couldnโt give 2 sh*ts mate
@N1ghtW1ng Iโd deffo buy this. I never played the expansions and I quite liked 4
@TheRedComet
If Rockstar actually made this, then we can all bet it should be perfectโฆto its original form and playability.
@amenohi Not at all. Different builds for different platforms.
Don't know how I feel about this " they want to keep the spirit of the original there" all of those GTA games will not age well at all, im not looking for a full remake but a well tought out remaster and good gfx upgrade and QOL Improvements would be welcome
@kingbreww
Exactly this ๐
@TeapotBuddha wordddd. Theyโre a great part of gaming history, but they are just that, history. History is done, time to move forward and create more things that will eventually become โhistoryโ. Recycling games is a waste of time and resources
@Aexurion totally agree. Back in the day Rockstar were my fave developer, but something changed around the time GTA online came along.
The sceptic in me fears this will just be the same ps2 games, with a new trophy set and a 50 pound price tag
@Yomogi not for Switch. It wonโt be running at 60 fps on Switch imo. But maybe there will be a performance and quality mode in this trilogy perhaps????
As someone who never played San Andreas but loved the other two, I'm looking forward to this.
Yippee ki-ya. However i rather have Liberty City Stories than GTA 3, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
About game control and camera. The PS2 versions of Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories had updated controls and camera so these new version should also be updated.
@DomGC โThe ONLY way to play. No, really.โ
Even if itโs just some up-rez PS2 level visuals, please add modern controls. Thatโs all I need
Interest piqued! I grew up in the 80โs
And did I ever have a good time just driving around Vice City listening to the soundtrack. I need all the songs from the original game in this version please!
@Danloaded you forgot & Knuckles
Is this a digital only release?
@amenohi Like I said, different platforms can have different builds. The fact this is also coming to everything is awesome. Remember how old and dated these games look already. Temper your expectations a bit.
If they sell the old one without significant upgrade better not buy it
Regardless of if you are happy or not everybody is talking about it so they got what they wanted. I think the leaks forced their hand to reveal the existence earlier than they wanted.
Just the fact that a ps5 version is mentioned means that will be vastly improved,or else it would only say ps4,since everyone knows ps4 runs on ps5.
WELCOME TO SAN ANDREAS I'M CJ FROM GROVE STREET!!!!
Back in the day when rockstar actually made more than one game every decade.
I have a copy of this on the OG Xbox. It also came out for the PS2.
I like the gta series..played all of them but i think its getting a bit over done now..i was interested in agent but i guess we will never know how that was going to be now..its almost as if red dead and gta is all rockstar can make now..call of duty,gta,asassins creed etc...the future of gaming is looking very repetative..we need a new manhunt..
Less interested in this than GTAV PS5 which I'm not at all interested in. R* used to make games. Then they made a series. Then they made GTAV. Then they split SP and MP and now they make 1/2 a game and need all R* studios to do it.
Have them on Steam already so not interested in these one way or the other. Just another cash cow to be milked to death before GTA VI comes out, if it ever comes out.
@nessisonett I've seen people say these are the Android versions? if this is true that would make them inferior. Didn't even know these games were available on Android tbh.
@RubyCarbuncle Theyโre definitely not the iOS and Android versions because those platforms are getting ports of these remasters in the later part of next year. They wouldnโt need to separately port the new collection unless it was a new remaster.
@kingbreww Speak for yourself, I honestly canโt wait to revisit these classic gems. Your already writing the games off before you even know what kind of enhancements they are getting. Iโd even take GTA IV if that ever came out enhanced.
@Sebatrox Agreed, Iโd love the Max Payne Trilogy to be all spruced up for next-gen.
@MaccaMUFC I will and yes I am. New games only, Iโve already played them and I donโt need to again. Theyโre a waste of time
These games are already on Ps4.
@kingbreww We get how you feel about this trilogy but Iโve not played them since the original Xbox so itโs gunna be great for people like me to experience these games we grew up playing, all while hopefully being improved to todayโs standards. Youโll just need to accept that Rockstar will not probably be bringing GTA 6 till close to the end of the PS5โs and Series X/Sโs lifecycle.
people will be excited until they boot up the first mission of gta 3 and realize this is not how they remember it and feel disappointed. people are funny like that.
@MaccaMUFC 100% I think it wonโt be released till then too or probably at least the mid way point. Iโm still gunna trash them over it at every opportunity I get. Why? Because they deserve it ๐
@Porco thatโs why listening to the mob has always been folly. Gaming has moved on in light years since then to put it conservatively. As you say though they have memories of the past but arenโt smart enough to realise that feeling they are chasing will only come back to them again from playing new games and looking into the future and can not be recreated by reliving the past
@kingbreww exactly right. i consider myself to be a retro gamer of sorts and enjoy games from that era (and even older), but not everyone has the same level of tolerance โ with so many caveats and outdated mechanics to be aware of. i think some people will be in for a not-so-joyous-surprise with this collection. as you say, nostalgia is a powerful thing and is sometimes better left alone in the past!
Yawn. Not at the games at these commentsโฆ.. โgaming has moved onโ - โthese games donโt stand up well against modern gamesโ - the majority of gamers donโt feel the same. Games may look pretty these days but they rarely capture the imagination like these games did. These will sell silly numbers whatever enhancements because they will still be more fun than 90% of the open world GaaS nonsense that gets released today. Fact. So you can bore off and do your daily challenges and grind away and those with taste will play a proper game and not a MT milking machine.
I donโt like what rockstar have become and wish they could go back to these days.
Hopefully plenty of nice little refinements and extras will be added. But the narrative anything old is rubbishโฆ. Haha. Kids today.
I suspect these new versions were will indeed look better than the emulated PS2 classic versions and may have some improved aiming/driving mechanics.
But I'm guessing the licenced music will all be converted to DLC for $1.99 per song. Given how many songs that were taken out of the Trilogy (aroung 50?), that could really add up.
@Rob_230
Same here. Loved Rockstar until GTA Online.
Being sceptic is not that surprising given they've been very lazy with earlier remasters. It's why we aren't confident about the Trilogy DE blowing us away.
Btw, now we know why Rockstar was so hellbent on shutting down those fan made projects. ๐คฃ
Cool, I canโt wait to see how they screw this up.
i'm not too excited for this.
I have defeated my own personal feeling of nostalgia. No longer do I buy games that I had a fun time with 20 years ago. My gaming tastes have changed over the years. I simple YouTube video is all I need to save myself from buying these games again. Also I won't support Rockstar's continuing habit of vomiting unoriginal content for a quick buck.
@kingbreww the funny thing is that it will be "TOP TEN PLAYSTATION TITLE FOR ....." This just gives PROOF that no matter what hot steaming molten diarrhea mound Rockstar puts out, they will market it and spritz it up with a fresh coat of "NEW AND IMPROVED" perfume. Whom ever hasn't played one of those Playstation GTA titles, probably is around 10 years old, and shouldn't be playing any of the games in the FIRST place!!
I hope they fixed the controls because I bought the remaster before, but could not play it because the controls were awful (didn't play the originals so I did not know the controls were like that)
@MakersMark yep, people in general are dumb these days and businesses will take advantage of that. I wouldnโt mind but it means that them making new games takes a back seat
Will they still have the licences to have all the great classic tunes on the radio stations? I fear not
Better be full price for the entire set.
@Deanster101 you'd hope that with all the money they rake in with GTA online they could splurge a little to get all the tracks again.
Finally an official announcement, but it's maddening that they haven't shared any footage/videos or even art/screenshots from the remasters.
Also still waiting for price info and a release date...here's hoping the rumored upcoming Xbox event will shed light on more details.
excited is an understatement hopefully they revamp the controls to modern day because i got san andreas remastered from PS4 and they still had the same PS2 controls and i couldnt do it lol wasted a full $15.
