Square Enix hasn’t had the easiest time capturing the irreverent nature of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in trailers, but this launch trailer nails it. Dropping a good two weeks prior to the Eidos Montreal adventure’s PlayStation 5 and PS4 release date, the 120-second hype builder has a good mix of humour, outright action, and 80s hair metal.
We recently got to go hands on with a near-finished build of the title, and enjoyed its similarities to the Mass Effect series. “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t just wear its Mass Effect influences on its sleeve: it prances them about like Chris Pratt in the opening exchanges of the franchise’s first movie,” we wrote in our hands on preview.

@Xenomorph_79 only around 20 hours? That's more than enough.
@Xenomorph_79 The Mass Effect games are padded out by side missions. The main stories aren't much longer than 20 hours. Maybe this has some side missions to extend the game too.
After the rather average Avengers I will wait for the reviews on this one.
Something about this just feels off. Visually its definitely last gen, but I think more than that, the environments just lack variety and detail. They all look like just different configurations of pixelated colors. If its true that its that short, I am shocked they chose such environ design choices, and the game looks VERY linear. For me if a game is going to be linear and short I expect highly polished environs, VARIETY, and gameplay mechanics, .
As much As I love the Deus Ex series, its almost just stupid to buy a game at launch anymore due to releasing games unfinished, missing what was marketed, or riddled with profit driven in game nonsense. Especially when they are published from these studios getting too big for their own good. Almost all of them are trying to incorporate ideas to continue to profit beyond the retail price of a game.
However this one in particular showed very little and came out of nowhere, so i suspect a 7/10 true review and 8-9/10 for the publisher bought and paid for reviews.
I honestly keep forgetting this game is coming out.
Rental.
I only trust Sony with a Marvel game at this point. But hoping for the best, and it is the new MassEffect I did not get.
So I'll burn a GameFly slot on it
@Xenomorph_79 I've finished Mass Effect Legendary Edition a few weeks back and it took me 18 hours so I'd say its a fair comparison
I'm looking forward to giving this a bash when I've got through a couple more of the stack that's built up over the last month or so
@Xenomorph_79 Honestly I hate it when games go on for too long (usually over 30 hours). I'd rather play five 20 hour games than one 100 hour one.
@Xenomorph_79 I didn't actually the first mass effect isn't that long a game, so it fits for me. I can understand being cautious with the state of the Avengers game though but its not being pushed as a live service game - unless I've completely missed that.
@Xenomorph_79 Obviously, your just trying to sh*t on the game because you have some vendetta with the Avengers game. If you don't want to buy it then don't buy it. Theirs plenty of bloated open world games out there for you to bury 100+ hours in on fetch side quest and miniscule task to make you feel like your getting more bang for your buck.
Looks…average at best. Linear games are so limited though
I’m sorry but that looked awesome.
Been down on this game since it’s announcement but that’s was what they should have lead off with
Probably one for the Christmas holidays so I have time to clear some backlog first, but I think this looks decent.
This is giving me first of the year PlayStation sales possible buys I'm still on the fence mainly because its only 1 player based combat. It had potential but lost me when you can only play with Star Lord
@Xenomorph_79 I have tons of long games that i finished of which i dont remember a thing. Heavenly Sword finished it in 6 hours and it does one thing that Farcry or AC cant. And that is me make care or remember what charactersor the story. 🤪
@HotGoomba same here. Very tired of all the open world never ending games. A tight experience is much appreciated, though I get that others feel differently.
@Flaming_Kaiser excellent example. One of my favourite games for that exact reason.
Guys just because it's published by Squeenix doesn't mean it's from the same dev as avengers smh
@Arisen But it does mean Square Enix could have negotiated to push mtx with in an update or something. Though, this does seem more like a single player game and realistically they don't really work well with MTX. I saw some in Far Cry 5 single player and it was only the cosmetic stuff that you really needed to fork put for, unless grinding fishing for hours. I'm somewhat optimistic about this game, anyway
@naruball This is a studio they should have bought. 😢
@Arisen agree! SE is a decent publisher, with some misfires, but they mostly have a great line up and talent. The hive mind just collectively decided to get artificially outraged over something until ea, Activision, ubi or Bethesda add another blunder to their belt.
For the first time in my gaming life I’ve pre-ordered (£46 base.com). The trailers, music, gameplay and IP have my interest.
Hoping to wrap up death stranding before jumping into this on release date.
@Flaming_Kaiser I'd love to see a Heavenly Sword sequel you know
Hated the music. Game looks mildly interesting. Soon know if it's any good I guess.
@Jayofmaya People are sceptical over this game because of avengers the same way sw jedi fallen order was because of ea's mediocre battlefront games which also had MTX at launch. It's an entirely different game and anything goes really. The reactions from the demo were positive so I also want to be optimistic
@Xenomorph_79 I agree the Avengers was trash, but to condemn this game before its even released is wrong. Surely, if your a fan of one of Ubisofts extremely worn out franchises you can give this new game a chance.
@Xenomorph_79 only a week to finish a 20 hr game....you have too much time on your hands mate.🤣
I’m interested in this game but I think I’ll wait for a review before purchasing.
Why would anyone buy this game given how SE backtracked on microtransactions with Avengers?
For the first time in my life I have a weird feeling that this game is both AWESOME and BAD lol don't know why
It is the only game I am looking forward to play this year, I think. I am liking what I see and what I read about it. I hope the reviewers get a copy before launch so I can buy it and play it at launch day.
@Kopite Why not let the GOW developer make a new sequal. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser I can get behind that.... I think SMS will do even a better job than Ninja Theory to be honest
@vict0RGM @Thelegend159 @Jacko11 Same here, this game looks cool and I still plan to buy it day one unless things change for me money wise.
Can't believe they binned Adam Jensen for these Marvel humoured clowns.
@Thelegend159 I never preorder but this trailer made me think about it . Great trailer
Big fan of Guardians both movie and comics. This i will buy. It may not be the greatest from what I've seen but decent is enough for me.
@Flaming_Kaiser if only!
@Ken_Kaniff The Avengers game was by no means trash. Enough with this repeated exaggeration. The campaign was good, according to most reviewers and gamers who actually played it instead of trashing it by jumping into the hate bandwagon. Its real problem was never the core game, but everything else.
@mwatcher Because those Microtransactions don't affect the game as much as the hate crowd wants everyone to believe. If you stick to the campaign, you get a great experience, because the core game is well made.
@Flaming_Kaiser I'd like to see what Bluepoint could do with it
@Integrity Really? Classic Motley Crue? I think it fits nicely with the vibe they’re going for. Although the GoG movies have stayed with more chill 60’s and 70’s era music, I like the 80’s hair band rock for the video game since it’s more of a ‘get pumped’ type of feeling to it. 😄
@Th3solution is that who it was? Sorry, not my cup of tea at all. Muse on the other hand....😁
@Arisen I personally love Battlefront 2. I never played the first, though. You could see Fallen Order was single player focused, though. Not the small campaign delivered in Battlefront 2. I'm not sure on Avengers, but this definitely looks like a campaign focused game to me.
@Jayofmaya battlefront 2 is a good game it's just had a disastrous launch mainly because of mtx
