The existing versions of GTA III, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas will be removed from the PS Store for purchase starting next week. With the announcement of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, label Rockstar has said that it will be removing any legacy versions of the cult classics from digital storefronts. Of course, if you already purchased them then you’ll be able to redownload them at any time.
As of the time of writing, you can buy and play all three titles on PS3, PS4, and PS5 courtesy of Sony’s various PS2 Classics programs. These are emulated editions and lack the quality of life improvements being touted for this re-release, but they are quite cheap these days. We’re a little bit torn on this, as we can see why Rockstar would want to funnel people towards the re-releases, but there is obviously a concern about what the new versions will actually change.
Of course, those original PS2 discs will continue to be sold on eBay until the end of time – and they even have the full soundtracks intact.

That would make sense that they want people to buy the new remasters that are "rumored".
@Telekill Official now!
I have these games both physically and digitally, so I'm all set.
I love the idea of these games coming back. But I feel were getting a rude awakening when we actually experience again how clunky those controls and animations were.
Sometimes memories are just best to stay as memories.
Just a shame we never saw GTA Liberty City Stories & Vice City Stories make the crossover to the sadly underutilised & so-so emulation used by the PS2 Classics emulator! I preferred LCS over GTA 3's firestorm of bullets if you re-entered an old gang area if you merely wanted to enter a safe house etc.
As for Vice City Stories, had an equally great soundtrack as Vice City's...though guess they probably would've gimped it like Vice City's ps4 release! (And the re-edited missions)
Can they remove GTAV as well. Sick of seeing it 😁
This is why I keep all my older consoles. I can play any playstation game on their respective consoles when I feel like conquering games that I failed to in my childhood. If I don't like changes in remasters, I can always go down memory lane with the older consoles.
From the masters of recycling and not listening to their customers…Cockstar. Yawn. New games thanks 😊
The ps3 remaster of San Andreas was good, but it lost that sort of orange hue that made it feel like a 90s West Coast music video or something. Hopefully they can keep that sort of colour scheme and make it looks as smooth as the ps3 remaster at least. If they can at least manage that and some small improvements I might be interested in this.
@Jayofmaya Wait, wasn't the PS3 version just a port of the mobile game?
They should have remastered the PSP games too. That Phil Collins part was pretty fun as I remember it.
Usual R* policy, nobody would want the 'original' when we've announced the 'best' version yet.
Quite a lot of games this has happened too, I just hope that this means they fix a few bugs that were present in Vice City, lookin at you RC Bandito van on the beach...
Took me ages to find a version on Ebay where it was an older print of the disc without the bug...
Getting back on topic I will most certainly buy San Andreas before it disappears so I have the originals and yes I probably will buy the Definitive Edition at some point cough 70% off...
I don't really care about these ports since they're just the iphone versions but this does remind me to hunt down the original PS2 versions.
@ThaBEN I disagree, I played GTA 3 on PS4 a few years ago and it was a great trip down memory lane. Yes the controls weren't great, but it was still as fun as I remember it being.
@ATaco Pretty sure the PS4 games are PS2 ports.
@Ken_Kaniff I actually played all three games this year and had no problems with the controls, 3 is still my favorite despite playing the worst.
@Ken_Kaniff Any idea if they will fix the controls?
I always hate playinv older games thr controls are horrible.
@Flaming_Kaiser I'm sure they will. I dont think Rockstar would put out half ass ports of these games. I expect pretty significant changes, aside from the art style.
They take old games off of course, so we pay more for new ports.
Worse is games like tsushima, they deleted the base game from ps4 until they had the complete edition with the dlc added, so you can't buy the base game at a lower price now.
Pretty scummy from sony honestly.
@Ken_Kaniff I really liked Vice City but GTA 3 was not really my thing but if the controls get a big update then i will bite but i will wait for for reviews with this for sure.
@Jtheripper How many times have bought several GTA games already.
Thank god, I have them bought. Nothing will change the originals.
@get2sammyb Nice work on the thumbnail
@Broosh Yeah, but they had slightly better graphics with a little more detail.
This kinda makes me think the visuals will only be slightly improved, which is super disappointing if true -.-
I'm wondering if the GTA Trilogy on PS4 store right now has the complete game soundtracks?
If so, getting this version before it's gone might make sense...
But I mean, what exactly are they going to remaster? Are they going to make it run smoother? I'd rather a remake of these titles with the original sound track.
@Telekill I don't really think it makes any kind of sense honestly lol.
These are PS2 classics on a PS3. They can't be played anywhere else and the Trilogy can't be played on a PS3 either. It's like going out of your way to remove the older versions for the sake of doing so. Unless they were being charged money for having them there, I don't honestly see the point. Just leave them there. Whole point of a digital store front is that they are always accessible for those who want them. Those that want an as close to authentic experience as they can get.
Anyway not a huge deal to me, just doesn't sound like something that really is considering all the angles and simply going out of their way to mothball the PS3 for no other reason than spite. It would be like removing FF7 from the PS3/Vita/PSP store because the PS4 has the trashtastic PC Remastered version.
@NotSoCryptic I think you're on the cusp of understanding how far Rockstar has fallen. They don't have any honor. They want your money and are willing to prop up their new port by removing old ports. They don't care that you've played it on PS2 and PS3... they want you to buy it again... and again... and again. It's why GTA V is about to release on PS5... third gen in a row... and people keep buying it. When the people continue to buy... the company will drain every last ounce of coin they can from them.
@ThaBEN I've just recently finished the GTA3 (playing the PS4 version on my ps5) story again and found all the hidden packages. Some of the controls definitely need upgrading like the shooting. At least I won't be as shocked when this version releases. But whether or not I get it will depend on how significant an upgrade it is
This is a damn shame for new players! I already bought the PS4 ports so not worried myself.
