Speaking as part of a candid interview with GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said that the business is defined by three key attributes: games, community, and the brand. According to the bigwig, Sony’s gaming division has always been “cool”, and when prompted to describe what makes the PlayStation 5 so desirable, he returned to the most important attribute of all: the exclusives.
“The launch lineup was the best we’ve ever had, and I’d submit the best that any console platform has ever had,” he beamed. “The work we’ve done since then [is excellent], with Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – and MLB The Show 21 for the United States, which is a fine game. The pipeline of games that we have coming is just fantastic – it’s by far the strongest that we’ve ever had for any of our consoles. I can’t wait to see these games starting to drop: Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7.”
Despite its somewhat secretive nature at times this year, we know the company has more than 25 exclusives in development for the PS5 – as well as a brand new virtual reality headset to boot. Sony’s first-party output has gone from strength-to-strength over the past decade, and with the leadership of PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst, the sheer number of studios working under the brand’s umbrella is unprecedented right now. It’s going to be a fun generation, folks.

2022 is shaping up to be a fine year. I'm actually a bit more excited about 2023 though, especially if any of these rumors about MGS and Silent Hill bear fruit.
If I could suggest anything, it would be for Sony to diversify its genres a bit more. Car combat, flight sims, RPGs, and horror games would be very welcome. Just any of those under-represented niche genres it has strayed away from in the recent past.
Good time to be into games.
people dont give sony enough credit for ps5 launch, meanwhile series x launched with ZERO first party games, zero.
@UnlimitedSevens Definitely get the sense they're working on a lot more multiplayer stuff.
Absolutely brilliant. And they didn't have to buy 1 major studio like Bethesda to triple their exclusive output and deny millions of gamers from those games. Say what you want about Sony and their business model, you can't fault them for their dedication to top quality exclusives.
“'The launch lineup was the best we’ve ever had, and I’d submit the best that any console platform has ever had,' he beamed."
I normally give Jimmy Boy a very hard time for saying things like this, but I think I'm in total agreement. To release four big PS exclusives (Astro, DS Remake, Sackboy, and MM) that ranged from (in my opinion) very good to phenomenal on the same day during a global pandemic is nothing short of miraculous. Even taking away MM and Sackboy because of their cross-gen nature, Astro and Demon's Souls (Astro, especially) were big standouts for me last year.
I'm much more mixed on this year's line-up, but the initial PS5 launch exclusives definitely were the best group I've ever seen for a new console.
@get2sammyb they'd be mad not to. They can't afford to miss out on that branch of gaming. I'm adequately assured that it won't be to the detriment of genres Sony are traditionally strong in or them creating new SP IP.
Sony definitely did a great job with their launch titles but fans are hungry for more and it didn't help that some of their exclusives were cross-gen releases. I'm really excited on things to come. I'm confident with their current studios. They really don't need to buy more at this point and just keep ironing out what they already have. 2022 and beyond are looking good, not just for Playstation but for the gaming industry as a whole
@Integrity ...well apart from Insomniac, Guerilla, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Housemarque etc etc
( your comment may have sarcasm, if so ignore me ha ha )
"...to the bigwig, Sony’s gaming division has always been “cool”"
I enjoyed this, it made Jim Ryan sound like someone's mum
@KingPev @KingPev I'm sorry mate, I don't know which comment of mine you're referring to with your reply.
In one of them I was saying Sony have built up a porfolio of studios over time and have nutured them for years, whereas as in contrast MS bought 1 massive, independant studio to play catchup and in doing so denied millions of us from their games.
Was that what you were replying to? 😊
In terms of the first year the ps5 definitely had more to offer than xbox series S/X, infact takeaway gamepass then I see no reason for an xbox console especially during that launch period.
@UltimateOtaku91 MS even went as far to say there'd be no 1st party episodes for up to 2 years.
I hope this gen the majority of games aren't sequels again. Be nice to have a wider range of games
@Bleachedsmiles I think, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Hermen Hulst said of the 25 games in development almost half are new IP.
That's a good balance of sequels and new projects IMO.
A lot of people are denial genuinely or not but it’s a fact PS5 line up of games has been on fire from the beginning and is set to keep that momentum.
Sony has had a good first year for the PS5(almost a full year). I expect some good PS Plus games for the 1 year celebration. Also let's give props to Herman Hulst. The man has been working his ass off for Sony. I ultimately think he will have Jim Ryan's job down the line.
He's the one guy when I watch people react to Sony's streams everybody is like "Oh hey Herman, or it's Herman!".
I am excited for 2022, and the Hidden Gems that could be and I am referencing Sifu and Forspoken.
I'm going to be absolutely skint next year with what's coming from playstation but I've also got a Switch Oled on the way and I'll definitely jump in on PSVR2 when it arrives. I may even one day welcome Xbox back into my life but even the Bethesda buyout isn't that exciting for me, hopefully Xbox studios do start pumping out hit after hit as it would only be a great thing for the competition and gamers.
@Integrity ...that was the one yeah. I get what youre saying about Bethesda but Sony have bought plenty of studios over the years - Insomniac being a particular major one. Are Sony not denying millions of players the chance to play Spiderman amongst many, many others from other studios ? Would you be happy if Sony had bought Bethesda ? Don't get me wrong, Sonys IP's from their studios are what defines them and although I own all the current consoles, my heart is with PS. But acquiring studios is part of the business unfortunately
As a new ps5 owner and never had a PS4 ...Ratchet and Clank was alright...I liked Death Stranding more than I thought ....I plan to play both god of war and Horizon before the sequels come out.... unfortunately the game I thought id like the most....Spiderman remastered which im currently playing...I feel slightly disappointed....isn't holding a candle to the Arkham games for me
@KingPev the studios Sony have bought have had ties with them and close working relationships. Sony help establish them. Insomniac cut their teeth making games for Sony before they were acquired. They weren't making multiplatform games. Much like many 2nd Party teams have done that Sony have gone on and bought. Most of them were working exclusively on Sony games for most of their time as studios.
One thing is like to see more of from you Sony is some first party horror I love horror so much it's my favourite genre so more of that would be nice. I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally would like specifically some actual J-horror more than anything something akin to Forbidden Siren or Project Zero that's my dream come true for PlayStation ip
@Iver What’s important is having high quality games now. It matters less what happens to them in the next couple of years.
@Integrity Insomniac also did XBox exclusive Sunset Overdrive and a squad based shooter I can't even remember the name of....( If you've not played them, you didn't miss much )
I disagree, the first 10 months were abysmal, we had Spiderman and demon's souls only for about 6 months and then finally got returnal. And it wasn't until rachet and Clank and other games started dropping that we actually had something to play. So while it's very good now and accelerating, I was disappointed for the first year pretty much.
I wonder if insomniac, Bluepoint, Housemarque etc signals the end of their acquisitions or if they plan on adding more studios…?
Just keep it close to the way it is now. No multiplayer garbage and more games that have grit rather than are popcorn fluff that make sales but aren’t gaming at its peak. Make a few of those Spider-Man games cos people love em but don’t forget making real games is why people buy your console
@KingPev we will just need to own PCs or xboxs to play Bethesda's exclusives, no big deal they only release a good game every few years anyway for those that can't afford to have multiple consoles or PC. Its actually better for us gamers in the long run I think because Sony and Xbox will throw more and more money at the studios to try and out do each other, where as before the studios had no one to answer to and were driven by profits. They still are driven by profit, but now we have an additional driver as well from their owners/key stakeholders.
Give us a bloody good RPG. Go on.
@Denni5m ...yeah - I think with Bethesda games the best option would be a kick ass PC, unless you want to play the new Halo / GoW / Forza
At least if you get a PC it'll be future proof for a few years
@UnlimitedSevens car combat for sure! Miss this genre!
@Rural-Bandit I’m in.
I really enjoyed the PS5 launch games, had a jolly old time. I'm not currently as excited for the near future, sequels are cool, but I really like the new stuff, or new takes on old franchises. That's what made the PS4 & Playstation in general so great, & I look forward to it more on the PS5.
The output of games atm are classic Sony type games, but like someone previously said I worry about the years to come with the GaaS this company has in development rn. I feel like Sony is reeling everyone in with good SP exclusives to get people to buy the PS5. Then in the next few years start dropping more and more Mp games and then they already have the consoles out there and can start to push microtransactions and make more money from these GaaS. Jim Ryan is slowly leading PS down that road.
@Rural-Bandit yeh I’m not particularly into Marvel either. They’re ok but not peak cinema or gaming as I said. I enjoyed Spider-Man and I reckon I’ll do the same with Wolverine too, but absolutely nowhere near as much as their other exclusives which are truly amazing experiences in gaming. But yeh I agree with what you said about them making other games too. Cos if they can make actual AAA Marvel stuff imagine how good they could make an IP with some serious grit about it. I’d be keen as
@KingPev yeah for sure. Forza comes out on PC now as well, I think all the Microsoft studios games going forward will drop on PC as well as xbox so even more reason to just get a PC and not Xbox. If you have to pick.
The ps5 has been the console out of all the others that i enjoy the most..i loved my ps1,ps2,ps3 (mostly) and my ps4 but the ps5 due to the backwards compatability and the sweet launch games has pretty much secured its place as my number 1 console..i've also owned other consoles as well but i doubt i'll ever own another microsoft or nintendo offering..just enough time to use my ps5 let alone others..
I’ll just leave this here:
‘Ratchet & Clank. I love the game. And I think as something that defines what PlayStation 5 is capable of doing, it is the first great example. And there's going to be many more to come over the coming months and years. But you look at that and say 'wow, you couldn't do that on any other console'. ‘
Jim Ryan
@Rural-Bandit
Hi man. I think the gap between consoles sales is even bigger than it was for last gen even though the press is very hush hush about it compare to last gen first year when they were trying to ‘explain’ why every month.
🤷🏼♂️
Edit
And actually a lot of people and the press was saying Xbox was set to dominate this gen.
Not interested in console war. Just interested in the way facts are reported 🤷🏼♂️
@MightyDemon82 am with you. Am across gamer and am just so looking forward to the PS VR2 and the games that come with this. We know for fact that the PS VR2 with greater exclusings AAA this gen. Although Astro bots 2 am most looking forward too.
Nintendo by all accounts have been holding back on the games to counter whats coming for the PlayStation. Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon 3 already certain buys for me. Am guessing Medroid Prime 4 and Pikmin 4 at least on top. Xbox One X I'l get later when Fable drops.
Stop drinking 8 weeks ago today for this reason. And am sticking by it. These games from PlayStation and Nintendo are just to much for me to want. ✌
@BorntobeGeek75 well done on not drinking. I barely touch the stuff these days myself so I can afford to fund all my geek hobbies!
@KingPev You're probably thinking of Fuse. That and Sunset were only a few games that they developed outside of the PlayStation ecosystem. Insomniac has been linked to PS for years so it's not the same honestly. They also don't have many IPs of their own since Sony owns those. Bethesda on the other hand is much different since MS now owns all those IPs that were also on PlayStation for many years. It's a much bigger blow than Sony's acquisition of Insomniac.
@Gremio108 I mean Jim Ryan has been with Sony from the start of Playstation so you could say that to a certain extent
I wish they dropped the VR fad already.
It doesn't make much money and it chugs up resources that could be put to better use.
Lets be honest. VR is for porn. Games can't do much or they send your head in a spin. Asgard's Wrath is a great game on Occulus i got and even though i want to play it, my brain clearly says it's not gonna happen as it gets hopelessly scrambled. Why waste resources on tech like this? It does not have potential for mass market.
@nplbbs The mother of all that is Sony
@InsertUsername ..Fuse, that's it. Disappeared without trace on release if I remember
@KingPev I played the demo years back, and wasn't impressed. Was surprised on how underwhelming it was considering it was from Insomniac.
@InsertUsername yeah it looked very generic, surprising as they did Resistance games around that time
I definitely agree! Looking forward to several PS5 games, even if a few of them will also be available on PS4 and eventually PC.
@Integrity Bethesda and Microsoft also have had a close working relationship over the years. All the way back to Morrowind for the original Xbox (not to mention PC).
In other words, the environment of the acquisition is more similar to Sony's acquisitions than not.
