Making games is really difficult, but when it comes to Rockstar’s remasters of the classic PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto titles, you could be forgiven for expecting slick performance on Sony’s supercharged PS5 console. This is, after all, a system that runs releases like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at a near-locked 60 frames-per-second – even with raytracing enabled.
The results for GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas are disappointing, then. The game has two modes: Performance and Fidelity. The latter runs at a higher resolution but restricts the gameplay to around 30 frames-per-second. We use the word “around” because it fluctuates, sometimes jumping as high as 35 frames-per-second and other times dipping below. This is true of all three titles.
But playing a classic PS2 game on modern hardware feels wrong at 30 frames-per-second, so you’re probably going to want to use the Performance option, which targets 60 frames-per-second – and does so badly. Look at this footage of GTA 3 – it endures dips as low as 35 frames-per-second when out and about in Liberty City, which is unforgiveable for a project of this kind:
GTA Vice City holds its target a little better, but plummets when under duress, like during gunfights:
Meanwhile, it’s fair to say that GTA San Andreas is the steadiest of the lot – despite also being the best looking of the trio – but it’s not without its fair share of dips and judders:
All of these have been analysed with the compilation running its day one patch, so this is the optimised version that Rockstar deemed ready for release. We’ll reiterate that we know making games is hard, but when it comes to remastered ports of classic titles, performance is key. This is nowhere near good enough, and we hope the publisher has some prompt patches prepared.

I'm not impressed. Won't be buying this overpriced trilogy.
I mean, a Ps5 can’t play a Ps2 game on max resolution at a locked 60fps? Obviously it’s EASILY capable of doing that. What kind of malarkey is this. I say again…anyone who buys any game day one isn’t smart. Typical, but what a dumpster fire
You're gonna really tell me a ps4 can't play a ps2 game at 60fps?
@Nepp67 Obviously it can, unfortunately this isn't a massively optimised port.
Wow. I can glance over the occasional weird looking NPC and strange texture hiccup, but these not being locked at 60fps is something I can't overlook. Definitely not buying this until it's fixed.
@Nepp67 No
They're telling you a PS5 (not a PS4) can't play a PS2 game at 60FPS
With regards the fidelity mode it's understandable IMO. Anyone who's ever used graphics mods for Minecraft on PC will tell you that you don't have to be playing a game with a huge polygon count, for the graphics settings to bring the GPU to a halt if they're pushed too far. Having said that Rockstar should be able to do a better job of getting the balance between fidelity and framerate right, than some minecraft mod user
Performance mode not maintaining a steady 60 FPS though? there's really no excuse for that at all
This is why I rarely buy games at launch.
Will wait for the inevitable patches and glitches to be sorted out and play it around Christmas time
@get2sammyb Yeah quite unoptimized
This stinks of developing for PC and then spending the last couple of months trying to cram it onto console, because "hey it ran on PS2, right? Should be a piece of piss!"
I bought this crap, stay away. I do hope they have their other dev teams join in and fix this up. Wasn't aware a mobile dev team worked on this remaster on consoles. Reason why it's absolute garbage.
This game should be running at 120fps at 4K than struggling at 60fps on 4K. Trailers made this game look decent but when you actually play it in person, it's just embarrassing.
They aren't real and don't exist but you know you have some type of mindset if you just like to go out of your way literally and mow down pedestrians. Anyway this Trilogy wouldn't look this bad if it was £30 but no Take Two needs that money.
What an absolute joke, how can Rockstar think this is anywhere remotely acceptable? The PS5 would easily be able to run GTAV at 4K60FPS but can't run GTA3?
It's shambolic
Where on earth are the reviews for this thing?
It's almost as if there's an embargo on indicating when the review embargo lifts, because nobody has said when their review gets published.
@danlk1ng I've played Vice City with plenty of mods and had performance well above this on more modest hardware
@Atreus97 has anyone actually had any review codes? I've not seen anyone even mention them
Yeah I’m waiting for this “remaster” to get patched and drop in price before picking it up. It’s not looking so hot but I’ve also never played any of the GTA titles before IV.
The amount of jank coming out of the early release footage has actually decimated my hype for these games. Definitely not buying any time soon and CERTAINLY not double (triple?) dipping across Switch and PS5, which was my original plan.
I was gonna buy this today, but having watched a couple YouTube streams, I’ve decided to give it a miss. At least until they fix the majority of the framerate issues.
In its current state, I’d be tempted at something like £30 or even £40, but at a whopping £55, I expect… no, I demand… better!
I never played San Andreas back in the day, so I'm going to give that one a spin on Game Pass and will look to pick the trilogy pack up when it is on sale and has had a load of updates.
""""Performance""""" mode
Visuals are nice along with some QoL stuff but yeah the framerate is not good enough, hopefully they will fix it.
@TheArt Here's the armchair psychologist.
Developer is not obligated to fix frame rate issues. They never stated it is 60frames game. They said '4K and up to 60fps'. Besides, it's the same developer who brought garbage PS3/mobile phones port back in 2011 or so. We all know how well it went there. Game breaking bugs were never fixed. Unfortunately, I am very positive this will be left behind too.
Rockstar games have almost 2 thousand employees and they can't dedicate their own team for a project like this. Instead, they pay a third party studio that has a bad reputation to deliver their games. And they never did it on high level.
I'm excited to see actual player base and modders to fix this game on PC. Sucks to be a console player, however.
@kingbreww I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is.
This is *****, however. Crazy expensive and a real poor show from Rockstar to let it be released in this state.
It is ridiculous that games that could whole run from RAM of these days machines have this issues. It ia as same as Diablo 2. On Switch it moves worse than on my 15 years old Pentium PC (Switch is machine that can run Witcher 3 which would burn my PC to ashes even by loading main menu...)
This is why I don't buy games at launch anymore.
That being said, I already payed full price for all three of them 15-20 years ago. Too outdated for my taste anyway. Hoping for a better remake of IV in the future.
Laughable to me that so many people were hyped for this even after learning it's the same developers of the mobile versions which are universally panned.
had to turn 3 off it was so flarking bad, wtf is this
Have just been playing a bit of San Andreas on on Series X. Nor sure if that version is better or VRR is masking the worst of it, but I didn't notice it being this bad at all.
@themightyant same here I have Xbox on fidelity mode ? The only thing for me is the characters look messed up ,I was in the gym and I swear he had a head that didn't seem to go with his body ,its like that guy in the beetlejuice waiting room
@Martsmall Not noticed that yet. There are clearly some janky bits but those were in the original and it's also to be expected when porting a game designed for 480p up to 4K. (24x the resolution) So far pretty happy but we'll see as time goes on.
Shows what their real effort is into making a new GTA or the fact they just don't care as long as the GTA Onlind still makes a killer.
@hoffa007 The new version was made my Grove Street Games (a Rockstar company) so likely won't have impacted any of the main games they may be working on either way.
Anyone one that pre ordered this is directly contributing to the continued downfall of the game industry as it was once known.
The lack of showing much of anything, and the review embargo alone should have been indicators here, alongside the track record Rockstar has followed for years now, which is just ruined them into another corporatized solely revenue growth focused business model that views their target audience as cattle.
This game should run at an easy 120fps on PS5. Especially given the garbage remake "improvements."
Dave chappelle was right about this gen being the worst to entertain ever! A few framerate drops (that I haven't experienced at 1080p or are that slight i can't notice them) and its the worst remaster ever made. Just look at the actual work that they have put in. Its unreal!
Hater gonna hate though while they are rubbing their hands together for saints row in feb.
What a mess. This definitive version should have been outstanding, these games deserved far better care and attention for the final product, particularly for a supposedly 'definitive edition'.
@Texan_Survivor they never called it a remake or claimed it was a remake?
so far i'm in the middle , i've only tried out sa so far because of game pass. graphically wise , its a pretty big improvement if you compare it to the original version. i think if you have a xbox and game pass its worth checking out , i don't think its worth 60$ unless you really really really want to play it again. maybe wait for a sale. hopefully they'll listen and fix it up a bit. if they can smooth the game out , and fix a few issues , then i thinks worth it. honestly it would have just been worth it to redo alot more instead of half way do it , instead of making major improvements to parts while just making minor improvements to others.
@Loftimus If Saints Row looks and plays half as bad as this low effort release then it also would deserve to be dragged, but something tells that won't be a problem as Volition aren' talentless hacks as Grove street games 🤷
Well what I thought would happen is happening those who on!y yesterday defended rockstar and said people are blowing it all out of proportion it will be brilliant are now doing 180s say they will never buy one of their games again , haven't been good for years and will be posting death threats , have too love the gaming community
@Juanalf calling grove street games "talentless hacks" just goes to show, you don't know what you're talking about.
@Juanalf and i take lower framerates over the lower IQ humour in saints row any day.
Looks fine. It'll get some performance updates too.
Can we just get the old versions back? At least they're cheaper.
This is why I hate modern gaming. Nothing but broken expectations and apologists.
I'm not a very picky about framerate but this makes no sense. I've got a lot more appreciation for the Mass Effect Trilogy now.
Well done, Rockstar! Pull the previous ports from the store before gameplay for the new version is released. Release a badly optimised update for double the cost. Glad I didn't buy day one. Hopefully they sort it out.
Haha im starting to think the Americans have figured out these games are actually taking the p*ss out of them and they don't like it.
@Loftimus All they are known for is making ports to Android and iOS. That would be fine and dandy if left alone except their ports are known to be specially terrible, so they suck at the one thing they do.
I glad you're enjoying the games though.. really, this trilogy is probably their best work to date which is good for them and at the same time is probably the saddest thing I've ever seen.
@Juanalf good for you. See ya later...
Oof.
These remasters are not super graphic intensive, so not having both high fidelity and a rock solid 60 fps is a shame from Rockstar.
Rockstar has become a complete and total joke. These are legendary games and should've been treated as such, they do deserve to get the remaster treatment but not this kind. Unfortunately, Rockstar is a very lazy dev these days and since I don't want to get banned for the language I'd use, the less typed about Take Two the better. This should've been handled with care, in-house at Rockstar, not farmed out but that's the modern industry. 'How can we make quick, easy money with minimal effort and cost?' Very pathetic.
@Deadlyblack
This isn't Rockstar, it's Grove Street Games, and that's entirely the problem. Rockstar is too busy trying to figure out how to milk GTA V even more rather than provide a consistent flow of new games like it did back in the day. Can't even be bothered to go all-in and do a proper remaster for these classic games.
@Gamer83 I mean, Rockstar probably should have done a better job overseeing the project. This never should have happened in my eyes.
@Toypop R* should optimise this dumpsterfire FFS Demon Souls looks a million times better and does run a solid 60FPS. The more i look at it its just terrible. It looks like a shiny PS2 game that runs horrible.
@Loftimus This is a trainwreck at full price.
-ugly characters
-terrible framerate
-it look great i dont agree it looks like a upscaled PS2 game that not have quality to keep 60 FPS
Im happy that this generation is not totally brain dead and calls is out for what it is a cheap cashgrabwith horrible optimisation.
An even worse character models then the original. Better bring back the original releases with a higher resolution.
@Loftimus I takes the p*ss out of everyone who accept and buys this.
I really think they should put the old versions back on the stores Instead of forcing ppl who wanna play these games to pay for overpriced rubbish
@Flaming_Kaiser Most people dont let a game get to them like that. Unless they have a grudge. And the npc's where never pretty. It a tad racist but the two guys are meant to look beady, just like candy sux is meant to look like a meff. These arent remakes they are remasters of really poor looking games. Framerate issues aside (which im hoping is an easy fix) theyve done a stella job of modernising the game without losing its character.
The music disappeared 7 years ago so any outrage now is ridiculous.
Well that's embarrassing. Might as well be playing these on a console from three generations ago.
@kingbreww There are still games you can buy day one. When I inserted Metroid Dread for the first time and my Switch could not find a day one patch, I was again remembered there is quality out there.
@Toypop I have the same opinion i sont mind to pay for quality. Demon Souls shows a remake that is made with lots of effort and love.
GTA shows a mediocre/bad running game that not improves on everything i even believe that some things even look worse.
Man it is a shame really...😕
@Loftimus I dont mind if it not looks that great but if it looks worse im out. Jak and Daxter PS2 on PS4 it looks rough but it runs and is fine and was fun enough to finish the controls were good enough. Jak and Daxter 2 I hated the controls so i could not finish it. (Jak and Daxter is a game that would a be million times better with updated controls and some updates to textures would a cherry on top even wide screen would be fantastic)
The Final Fantasy remasters that are remaster done right im not expecting a PS4 graphics remaster but a better running game thats been cleaned up with better textures.
They did some things right but the base is wrong some stuff looks worse so whats the use. GTA is not something i life for its a quality game that brings no special feelings except for Vice City the setting the music.
If i get a remaster i want it all in a better state not some stuff and complete so no bloody DLC on a ancient game and yes there are a few that do that i dont care if its a all time favorite i love. And please dont come with they can patch a 20 year old game the things should run great with a small patch for little things.
@Max_the_German sorry I meant meaty gaming consoles like Ps5 and XBSX
@kingbreww Oh yes, I forgot, high software quality at launch is not possible on higher-specs hardware. And Metroid Dread is not a AAA game with very complex animations, precise shooting mechanics and countless intentional possibilities to beat the game, with almost flawless 60 fps. The QA team at Mercury in Spain did a tremendous job.
@Deadlyblack
Completely agree.
Oh Rockstar! You are useless.
@get2sammyb...... Where is the review....... Surely it can't be that hard yo review this trash of a cash grab
@Loftimus...... Sorry to burst your Rockstar fanny fanboy crush bubble but no work was put into this crap.........
You are the shill that is wrong with gaming...... You are the shill gamer that ensure we receive crap like this every year..........
You look so dumb defending a company that has made over 6 billion dollars in revenue....
This is not hardwork being put it:
"The two-year development was focused on maintaining the look and feeling of the original games; the physics code was copied from the originals, and an artificial intelligence program was used to automatically upscale textures. The development team studied the distinctive qualities of the original games. They added several colouring, weathering, and lighting effects, as well as new assets from Grand Theft Auto V (2013). The team consulted with the original developers at Rockstar North when upgrading the character designs."
So no...... No Amount of hard work was put in on this crap.....
The graphics were done by an a.i. program using upscaling techniques......... So the devs didn't touch the graphics.....
Everything else was copy and paste and they still completely failed.......
They did not put in an ounce of hardwork.........
They only real work they did was using the popularity of the original 3 games to cash grab suckers like you using baked marketing trailers.........
Compared to the same work done by Bluepoint for a full Ps5 game this is piss poor and a joke and there is no excuse or defending Rockstar for this crap....
@GREGORIAN best you got? Like ive said before, i don't like rockstar in its current state and dont think gta has a future. These games have had alot of work done to them and the npcs have been changed or not, deliberately.
Nobody owes you anything mate. If it wasn't for grove street games we would still be playing the abominations that are the og trilogy, so maybe if anything, show a bit of gratitude daft lad.
Or if you aren't happy with it just say meh and move on instead of crying and insulting like a petulant child.
Hard pass on buying this early, will wait for $30 sale or cheaper with it being mostly patched.
