It’s been ten years since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched, and it’s been re-released several times in the decade or so since. Next week, yet another version of the seminal Bethesda role-playing game will deploy, this time with the moniker The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition. This will be available as an upgrade for the existing Skyrim Special Edition, or as a brand new game.
So, if you’re starting fresh, the new version will retail for £47.99/$49.99, and there’ll be a physical version on PS4. However, if you already own the aforementioned Skyrim Special Edition, then you’ll only need to shell out £15.99/$19.99 to upgrade to the Skyrim Anniversary Edition. The expanded package comes with a ton of Creation Club content, as detailed through here.
There’ll also be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for owners of either the Skyrim Special Edition or Skyrim Anniversary Edition, which will “optimise the game with enhanced graphics, faster loading times, and more”. Unfortunately, your existing Trophy progress will not carry across, so you’re going to need to start from scratch, Dovahkiin.

Is the upgrade worth it from special to anniversary?
Is it known if the PS5 version is coming out the 11th too or is it coming later?
This should not cost £47.99!
@LightningLeader Yes, on PS4!
@Splat Same day, I believe.
I mean… I have mixed feelings about the price. $50 for a 10 year old game? I’ll be getting it for $20 because I already own the special edition, but I think it’s kind of *****.
So horizon zero dawn gets s**t on for charging for an upgrade to next gen version but its OK for skyrim lol a ps3 game that's been milked for 3 console generations
I was hoping the upgrade wouldn’t be more than $20, this is music to my ears. I can’t wait to get my third platinum for this game! Once the PSVR2 comes out I’ll grab a fourth as I have that version but never loved the gen 1 PSVR as much as I’d hoped.
Lol no
This is far too pricey for me for the little additions that they're adding.
I'll check out the free PS5 upgrade at the very least.
So £16 for some mods
I was a massive ES fan starting with Oblivion, but Bethesda is just getting annoying with rereleases at this point.
Bethesda is now definitely on the top 5 greediest video game developers.
£48 for what's barely an upgrade on one of the buggiest triple A games of its generation.
And my money is on them not fixing most of these bugs (which are so hard to fix that modders have done it years ago)
Sony's upgrade doesn't seem as stupid now does it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Personally, I think they should all charge what they want and let the consumers decide if it’s worth it or not. No way I would pay $50 for this, but maybe some people will. No one is making anyone buy anything. If Horizon wants to charge for an upgrade, they should feel free to do so.
By the time I actually get around to considering playing this again, it'll probably be on sale as usual. The only version of Skyrim I've played is the PS3 version and apparently it's the worst version lol, so this should be more than worth it when I get it on a PS5
Not interested in mods at all but I’ll definitely be up for the Ps5 upgrade. And a free one at that
My concern is how this may effect the performance of the game. I have been thinking of a replay, disk copy, and as the game is now it has played smooth on my Pro, has a small file size, and i only use a couple of mods for good weather and no god rays.
What's wrong with these publishers and their pricing. Off key, £50 for a game thats 10 years old.. pretty disgusting
Yea it's a pass from me. I enjoyed Skyrim but have finished it twice already so not really feeling another run. Probably great if you have not played it yet but I don't think there is a massive improvement tbh
@Bentleyma- Quit moaning
The creation club content is all user made right? So they're essentially getting all this extra money from other people's work lol.
Wow, they have the nerve to still charge $50 for Skyrim? Bwahahahaha!!!
Well wait a minute, they wouldn't be doing that if people weren't buying it.
WTH people?!? 🤦♂️
Guys just play the Special Edition and choose from the 100s of mods already on there. Believe me, it looks stunning on PS5 with graphics mods
@Pat_trick
You mean Xbox not Bethesda.
Xbox fans are very quick to tell people that Bethesda games are now Xbox games.
Lol what a joke. Tons of great recent games go on sale for £15, can't spend that on Creation Club content...I mean still feels like there's stuff people haven't discovered yet in the base game why would you pay to add more.
No, I mean Bethesda. They had these horrible practices way before Microsoft bought them. If Microsoft is going to enable them or not is something we're going to see over the next years, but I agree that this "Anniversary Edition" is not a good sign of things to come.
@KingPev So I think I want to start the game new, with the new version. So how do mods work with the campaign? Can I toggle some on and off while still working on campaign? Or is it like a special mode where you jump into it to use mods, then out to do the campaign? Not worried about achievements but would like to play the campaign as it was.
I will take the free upgrade for the better visuals and stuff but i think shell skip the creation club stuff until it goes on sale for dead cheap.
@UltimateOtaku91 Bethesda gets memed on to death for their handling of Skyrim and its re-releases. But ultimately both have their problems. If you somehow think people don't find Bethesda's practice of just re-releasing Skyrim annoying/scummy, then you've not been on the internet long. At least most of the time they "add more content," even if it's still not worth full price with it.
Is ALL of the content on the retail (physical) version? Or it is just the old disc and you have to download all the extra content?
@frankmcma yeah you can fully play through the campaign with as many mods loaded as you like. Any quest mods don't restrict the campaign in any way- even the alternate start mod gets you through the beginning of it. It really gives a whole new lease of life to the game
@frankmcma and yes if you want you can disable mods at will if you feel they're not suitable for you, it doesn't ruin your save files
@frankmcma oh and I forgot to mention, mods DO disable trophies
I'm not entirely clear on the upgrade to the special edition. So far most "upgrades" have actually been access to the PS5 version for free, although of course there are patches for some PS4 games for PS5 which are also called upgrades. So if I stick in my PS4 special edition, will i be playing that version with graphical upgrades, ala god of war, or be able to download a PS5 version of the special edition, ala assassin's creed Valhalla?
The main reason I'm getting it again is there really isn't anything big coming out till next year. This will keep me busy for a good 100+ hours.
@KingPev I'll be grabbing the free upgrade to PS5 for the special edition. I haven't played it since its original release, do you have any recommendations for mods that you would say are essential, or greatly improve the experience?
This kind of thing is why gaming is becoming so boring to me: nothing but sequels, remasters & Marvel games😐
Sure, let's buy this game for a 7th time!
How about you focus on releasing the new ES rather than milking your fans for every cent they have. Just an idea. 10 bloody years old
@Camlambelot except that the PS5 is the only gaming device I have, so it's not quite that simple
@Artois it's milking new fans surely?
@KingPev cool!
Pretty sure it is a Scam
@RawnDawn It's basically expansion sized when you add up all of the content, so the upgrade price seems fair. Gameplay additions, dozens of quests, new items, dungeons, etc.
People seem confused about what this is. It's not a paid generational upgrade like Sony is controversially charging. The generational upgrade is free. This $20 pack is basically a giant bundle of paid DLC at a big discount vs individually buying. It can't be compared to HFW and GoTs upgrade pricing. That parts free. This is a bundle of DLC previously available separately for relatively cheap.
(Edit: not saying the content is worthwhile, but for those that like it it's a budget way to jump on it, otherwise you can get the previous edition with free PS5 upgrade for a song on PSN sales. Watch black Friday if you're in the mood to buy an eighth copy of Skyrim.)
This game is the ultimate cash grab. How many versions of Skyrim games are out already?
The fact that they are charging £47.99/$49.99 for a new retail version of this PS3 era game is just BS. I doubt it will look that much better than their previous effort. I do expect the game to still be riddled with bugs and performance issues (the usual Bethesda Game Studios BS).
Meh, no thanks.
Skyrim felt dated even when it came out so no way am I dropping £50 now.
Bethesda/Microsoft = Bethe$da/Micro$oft errrr micro$haft …. No Starfield on PS5 …up yours M$! Couldn’t play that long of a game with the gimp Xbox controller.
No thanks, will wait for a $25 sale or cheaper.
@Robbirtles now thats an idea! the ps5 version on the ps4.. i think we should vote yes to that! or at least not ever take off that special 'free upgrade from ps4 to ps5' and just let it run forever, for those of us that need to catch up getting a ps5!
Jesus milk your fans for all they are worth..bethesda the new rock star games..what with this and the gta remasters..if i want to play skyrim again i'll install my pc version which on my oldish pc will run @4k and well over 60fps with god knows how many mods etc which will in this case (because the game is not taxing my pc at all) look very,very impressive and it aint going to cost me £50...would i buy it if for some reason i had never played it then yes because it is an awesome game...but its been done to death and we need a new chapter in the elder scrolls kingdom..
Game Pass jobby.
Haha, I guess next is Skyrim's Special Aniversary Deluxe Edition. They could pack an Aniversary edition and one PS5 wallpaper for £149.99
I would gladly pay £49.99 for the Morrowind remake!
I'm amazed by how many people here are really upset they have to pay $50 dollars for Skyrim AE, despite apparently never being interested enough in Skyrim SE that has been out for 5 years and regularly went on sale for $16 or less.
It's almost like you have no interest in the game but saw an opportunity to play fanboys.
@Artois not only that it's the fact that we will never get a new elder Scrolls on PlayStation 5 and they just throw us a bone with this rubbish, I've played the game 5 times to 100% completion on different consoles and I certainly do not have time to play all over again and yet again complete another trophy stack, no thanks lol
@huyi bethesda/Microsoft have yet to announce exclusivity for an existing franchise, ie doom/elder scrolls/fallout, its just been a new ip so far.
I mean, they 'probably' will at some point, but it's not been confirmed yet, can still cling to the hope that gamepass subs alone might not be enough to fund their development.
@huyi You've played this massive game 5 times to completion? How do you have so much free time in your life?
@Balosi it has been confirmed, the fact that I brought a PS3 for oblivion when it first came out doesn't mean crap to them hurts me so! Bethesda and Microsoft made it loud and clear they don't give a bats crap about PlayStation users when they supported them from the beginning, hurts me to the core, I've brought fallout 3, new Vegas, oblivion, Skyrim multiple times legit on their supported platforms and they treat me this way with such incomtemnt is frustrating at least!
@reek not so much now, I have a serious boyfriend and a life, but when I was into it deep, yes I was into their RPG, 100s hours wasted as a PlayStation user, they spat in my face and other users as they go along and it hurts!
@reek yes, I've played the same game on PS3, PS4, psvr, pc with high end mods and all, Bethesda all they have done is spat in my face when I've supported them legit, brought their game legit multiple times, it's hurts like hell but all they care about is Microsoft now, I protest about it, but I know I'm the small minority being a woman and all, elder Scrolls overall is the best RPG I could ever play back in the day and I would be 100% behind them but they did the u turn and messed around with PlayStation users the way they did, anti consumer I am going to protest about it!
What a rip off.
@huyi I get that you were obsessed with this stuff. I used to be too back in the previous decade (tho I completed skyrim once not five times). But maybe you're taking this stuff too seriously? Isn't the entire point of life to move on and not let things effect you the way they used to? See, I got dumped recently by somebody I had an amazing month with. Now that HURT. But this childhood game of mine coming a decade later for 50 pounds is mere amusing trivia to me. I can't really understand having such strong feelings about this as you're having. Who cares about these companies and their exclusivities and their games? It's ultimately a trivial point of life. Am I being ignorant saying that? I'd like to hear your point on this.
@Richnj, You missed the point of why people are angry... "I'm amazed by how many people here are really upset they have to pay $50 dollars for Skyrim AE, despite apparently never being interested enough in Skyrim SE that has been out for 5 years and regularly went on sale for $16 or less."
I purchased this game on PS3 for around 40-50 USD, then again on PS4 for the same amount, then I believe I paid again for Special Edition on PS4. After spending 150-200 USD in the same store, I need to pay again for the same game with a few upgrades. You can't sell the same game in the same store a few times for a total price with just essential modification . That is just... I wanted to say crazy, but I will say Bethesda.
@AV_aka_577_ex-Xbox The Special Edition is the only version of Skyrim on the PS4. So you would have bought the PS3 version and the PS4 version. That's it.
The only way you bought more than two copies would be if you bought the PS3 standard version (2011) then the PS3 Legendary Edition (2013, which was expected since Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas all recieved similar editions, plus the extra content was available for the original release) and then the PS4 Special Edition (2016) and/or the PS4 VR version.
"I need to pay again for the same game with a few upgrades"
I actually think that you misunderstand. Because you own the Special Edition, you get the PS5 version, with some DLC, completely free. You don't need to buy the game all over again. It's yours. The only thing you need to do, is pay an extra $20, but only if the completely optional creation club content appeals to you.
And that's the problem, people are acting like this, what is essentially, DLC is forcing them to buy the game again, it's not.
This is literally a joke. Cynical to the extreme.
I dunno if it's just me being thick here, but I'm reading this and it looks like they're charging £16 to add some mods to the PS4 remaster of this game?
@johncalmc More or less.
The content you get with the £16 is the creation club content, which is already paid content.
If that's sounds unreasonable, just stick with the SE version and you'll get four DLC packs and the PS5 upgrade for free.
Right so just to be 100% right I own the special edition on both PS4/5 Xbox one x/series x
So I need to pay the £16 to upgrade on each console right the free upgrade does give you the anniversary edition
@Richnj Uhh "The Special Edition is the only version of Skyrim on the PS4. So you would have bought the PS3 version and the PS4 version. That's it."
There is no point in discussing what you are talking about. It is the most recycled game in the history of modern gaming. The other day, I purchased an Anniversary upgrade for 15-16 GBP. So me and 2-3 of my close friends constated we bought Skyrim more than ten times... Not to mention other of their games, the same games, just different versions... First, oblivion, then Oblivion GOTY, then Fallout 4, then also GOTY... As I said no point in arguing for them. I didn't spend 100-150 GBP on their games, and if we are going to be real, I spent more than 300 for three different games... The point is you are not right that people are complaining about nothing. We spent lots of money on ONE recycled game. That is the fact.
@AV_aka_577_ex-Xbox "It is the most recycled game in the history of modern gaming."
With RE4 existing, I'm not sure that is true.
"We spent lots of money on ONE recycled game. That is the fact."
Right, but you didn't have to buy the game, especially the Anniversary stuff. You could have just stuck with the free SE PS5 upgrade. The fact you keep spending money on this game, apparently with zero self control, is the reason it keeps getting releases. Todd Howard even said "the popularity didn't wane".
