As the developer behind a variety of relatively niche motorsport simulations, Hot Wheels Unleashed has always felt like a breakout hit for Italian outfit Milestone – and that’s reflected by its sales numbers. The title has now surpassed one million units sold, making it the fastest-selling release in the studio’s history.
“Ever since we announced Hot Wheels Unleashed back in February, we’ve received thousands of heartfelt messages from fans,” boss Luisa Bixio said in a press release. “This milestone is the umpteenth display of affection from our passionate community.”
Mattel, who of course manufactures the Hot Wheels toys, is also suitably satisfied with the sales: “Hot Wheels is all about encouraging the challenger spirit and Hot Wheels Unleashed brings that mission to life for gamers of all ages. We’re proud of this exciting milestone, and we look forward to even more fans discovering the game and new upcoming content as we head into 2022.”
A recent update added Batman and DC Comics content to the game, with more crossovers planned. We liked the racer a lot in our review, awarding it a sturdy 7/10: “Hot Wheels Unleashed is a rock solid arcade racing game that gets a lot of things right. The drift-heavy handling and physics-based mayhem create super fun action on the track, and the cars themselves are as good to look at as they are to drive.”

Well deserved too, this is a cracking game, with fantastic drift control and really good tracks.
I'm continuously tempted by this. What is the longevity like? I enjoy a racing game but I tend to get bored of them quite quickly if they don't grab my attention.
@Alfieburns
There's a bit of a learning curve and compared to literally almost every game that spoonfeeds you their gameplay these days, this one can hold your attention.
I do a couple of races a day and it's honestly pretty fun. Games like these I don't play in long sessions anyway, but it exceeded my expectations
@BoldAndBrash think it's worth the £38.39 for the special edition currently on sale on PS Store?
@Alfieburns I bought the Challenge Accepted version and loved it, right up until I finished the campaign. If you are looking for single player, it’s quite short and pretty easy.
Multiplayer is decent, but I’m not really an online person, so I haven’t been back even though I’ve got a lot of DLC with the Challenge Accepted edition.
If you are a trophy hunter, beware, the grind for a few of the trophies is insane.
The monetary value is really down to the individual. I paid full price and didn’t regret it even though I pretty much dropped it after I’d finished the single player.
Reminds me of Micro machines on SNES. That game was the bomb back in the day
I'm unsure, if I shall keep it or sell it. But I like it kinda
Such a good game and very deserving. I've had loads of fun with it.
@Alfieburns
No definitely not!
I got it for 30 bucks and got Dirt 5 and half a year of Top Gear subscription for it as well, so 38 seems expensive.
It's also a 100% one of those games that go on sale pretty quick
Its just a fun game. I picked it up at Walmart because I wanted their Exclusive: "Challenge Accepted Edition". that came with a Hot Wheels car. It gives you a Map path you follow doing races at each point. The free drop boxes with new cars are fun to collect.
@Alfieburns its £27 for base game in new store sale
I'd go so far as to say that it's one of the best games of 21. It looks amazing, plays really well and collecting the cars in the drop boxes is fun.
I'm excited to play this with my 6yo son on Christmas Eve!
