A new PlayStation 4 hack has allegedly unlocked the console for homebrew, and could potentially compromise the PS5 as well. A trio of coders released the hack which works on PS4 firmware update v9.00. It’s important to note that, as of 1st December, the latest firmware is v9.03, so this is leveraging a slightly older version of Sony’s system software.
A widely shared Twitter video from SpecterDev appears to show custom firmware running on the console:
It’s not the first time that the PS4 has been hacked, of course, but typically coders are forced to work with much older system software. It’s likely that a game of cat-and-mouse between Sony and the hackers will now ensue as it works to plug the holes – especially if, as some people are reporting, a similar exploit can be used on the PS5 as well.

Have a few hacked handhelds and a Nintendo Wii but they all had way more potential. I feel like my ps4 already has everything, dvd/blu ray, netflix, cheeeeaaap sales on games and custom themes. Not sure why hacking a ps4 would be as popular as something like a 3DS or even Switch.
Well it’s last gen now I suppose. Still, I don’t see the appeal in the same way Vita and 3DS really hit their full potential with CFW.
"Homebrew...cough cough" said Captain Jack Sparrow.
It was a necessity for me having homebrew on the PSP, Vita and Wii, you gain access to so much stuff it's almost impossible to name it all. I just don't see it that way for PS4, even if it becomes easy to Jailbreak I probably won't do it.
Dont worry in the end it will end up with streaming only as much as i dislike that as companies there not a lot of other options. And the homebrew excuse is bull its for cheaters and thieves in the end.
@Flaming_Kaiser
That’s not accurate at all.
Most of the community jailbreaks to unlock devices that you paid for to allow them to be used to their full potential. Or they do it to challenge theirselves.
A hacked PS4 would be a great affordable emulation box with a port of Retroarch. It’s x86 architecture so porting wouldn’t be difficult. It could certainly run PS2, Xbox, and GC games at native speeds and leveraging the PS4’s GPU to upres the classic games.
Yes some of them are pirates. But that’s just the risk. The benefits of hacking firmware on older consoles that are soon to be depreciated are too big to ignore.
Hell, hacking fixed the problems the Vita had, allowing you to use affordable SD card media and truly back up your games. It was also perfect for emulating older depreciated 32 bit and 16 bit consoles.
so long as some digital-only games continue to get de-listed from their storefronts, there will always be a desire to mod a console and gain access to said games. heck, scott pilgrim on ps3 was one such example... you literally could not play that game for many years if you did not own it before the de-listing (up until it was re-released on ps4 recently) and the only way was to mod a ps3 and download the pkg file. there are a few other examples on the ps3 such as after burner climax, not to mention a plethora of disc-only games that fetch very high price points now (splatterhouse, etc).
all that being said, the ps3 is the last console where some games were limited to disc-only releases. i think it is OK to mod a console while it is at its "end of life" cycle and the software publishers have already made a healthy return on their investment. The PS3 has been in that state for a while now, but the PS4 is YEARS away.
@TheRedComet Just like most the guys on YouTube bragging they never bought a game and love to ruïn online.
And thats probably why so many people were able play in a normal way on the PS3 online the day it got jail broken.
I hear that excuse so much with a friend had a PC of €2000 but i have seen him play a original game on it.
I personally did it to my PS1 to play games from another region because they not available here. Which i still bought from the store. But now everything works from everywhere.
But one thing is certain the second ps4 is jail broken fullt online will become a nightmare.
@Flaming_Kaiser
People are already cheating in online multiplayer on PS4. There are aim bot solutions for consoles.
That is completely unavoidable. It’s always existed. You just have to hope and pray you don’t get stuck in a lobby with them.
I’ve always bought games and weirdly enough despite my support for modding and jail breaking I’ve only jailbroken one console. My PS3. And that was primarily to enhance to its media player capabilities since it was what I used as a networked media player. The home brew media players were far superior to what Sony offered and you could download codec packs that the system didn’t natively support.
Really curious to see how this develops. Custom Firmware unlocks a ton of possibilities with a console.
@Flaming_Kaiser PS4 has been jailbroken for at least 4 years now. it is not a new development (the headline of this article is misleading). sony has the ability to perma ban people who are online with a custom firmware console... it would be difficult to play online with cheats enabled for example. most of the issues with online play (hacks, cheats etc) occur in the pc space and unfortunatly there is no solution for it.
what is a new development though is jailbreaking the ps5. sounds like there has been a breakthrough and it is just a matter of time before it is fully exploited (up until a certain firmware). this surprised me since it took about 4 years to hack the vita and ps3. sony is clearly not putting the same attention to its anti-piracy measures as it used to.
@TheRedComet The PS3 online is unusable thats a little of a bigger issue.
As someone who have friends involved with the scene. This article doesn't make much sense.
It's not mouse and cat play. Sony pays bounties with bounty system, once they patch the exploits that hackers report to them, after specific amount of time they can freely release it to the wild. Sony doesn't block the hacking tools, the only obligation hacker makes to Sony once he gets paid by the bounty program is that it needs to be patched within new update before they can release it. The gap has gotten smaller and it was almost a year since the last significant update. Homebrews were available to install on PS4 long before this exploit. The only difference between this new 9.00 exploit and previous 8.51 or so, is that this one needs to be run from USB, while older ones had to be enabled via browser on console.
It's minor inconvenience knowing how much you can do with jailbroken PS4.
You can see latest paid bounties by Sony for exploiters within this website. It also shows how much they get paid for and hacker usernames. The names there are mainly the people you should be thankful that you can utilize your PS4 this way.

So there is nothing like cat and mouse.
@Porco you can access online easily on jabroken PS4, just change the DNS settings then get homebrew app that has modified programs like Netflix, this way you can watch TV shows and other stuff on your jailbroken PS4 while being online. There are even ways to play games online. I have friend who is into this balls deep and been doing some amazing stuff, like his own custom theme makers with animated backgrounds and other stuff like discord to playstation interface. He taught me a lot about this and while I don't have interest for it myself, I know a lot of people that have so much fun with it and I am happy for it, because not everyone can spare 80 euros for a game.
@Juanalf all you need is USB stick and download the launcher, then plug to console and run from it. Before that it was as easy as going to website and clicking on link and your PS4 is jailbroken. It was working around 25% of the time, so sometimes you would have to see the PS4 freeze couple of times and restart. But it's only because the last exploit wasn't very reliable. This new one is very reliable and some say it might be the most stable exploit since 5.05.
@Bamila One thing PS4 games are not €80 its still stealing so cut the bullcrap. I cant afford everything i want but that does not make stealing ok.
I believe i can safely say its not for homebrew for 90% or higher of the people around just a way to steal the games.
You can make up a excuse and say its not going to the people on the workfloor but i dont believe any person that works there will say thanks for stealing our work.
Good, I'm glad you can still hack the PS4, I wish I had a cfw PS4 to mess around with, it's a shame a higher firmware has stopped this I'm official firmware and i would like to have fun on homebrew if it wasn't for digital I would play around and have fun with this 😁😁

Source?
@Jayofmaya Homebrew, Emulators, PS1,2,3,4 backups etc
@naruball Youtube. Blaine Locklair
@GoodGame Excellent and super reliable. Thanks for proving my point.
@get2sammyb I take it this means we can expect another stability/performance update to drop soon for the PS4 & PS5?
@Porco PSU mentioned this about a month or so ago
https://www.psu.com/news/hackers-looking-to-jailbreak-the-ps5-have-hit-a-new-milestone/
If this has finally been broken then either the PS5 has some really crap security (hacked in a year?) or the hackers are somehow using the PS4 API to infiltrate the 5?
@GoodGame Good point about ps2 and 1 playing. Was thinking of doing my ps3 for the super rare ps2 games that go for like £450 on eBay.
@Jayofmaya Did my PS3 a few months ago. Glad I did too. It's awesome now
The easiest and fastest way is to watch Blaine Locklair's videos on Youtube. He is the best at tutorials.
I am honestly impressed at how long it took to crack the PS4. Dreamcast was cracked in a single day and most consoles were not far behind. I am no expert at this topic and we can leave that to people who are smarter than me but the fact it took 8 years is seriously impressive for whoever programs Playstations software.
@PegasusActual93
The worst was the original Xbox. The community had it cracked in theory before it was even released. They used an exploit of the south bridge (the original Xbox was basically an off the shelf PC with a custom OS); the north bridge south bridge design was shared with PCs. They used PC knowledge to find the hidden key data, which Microsoft left on the retail units’ motherboards. Tried it on retail hardware at launch and it worked right out of the gate.
Microsoft’s decision to use open PC hardware on the original Xbox doomed it to be cracked immediately, since knowledge of PC exploits helped narrow down which exploits could theoretically work on the OG Xbox.
The original PlayStation was stupid easy if you judge wanted to play backup burns of games made before 1999. Swap trick. Put in a retail game first, then before the black PlayStation screen comes on you swap it in for your burn disc. The PlayStation’s method of detecting disc wobble (the method used for security) was gimped. It was stored on the first read sector of the disc. So the PS1 only needed to read that one section of data to clear the game as legitimate.
@TheRedComet
This topic was always fascinating because on one hand i dont want companies products to be tampered with but at the same time I'm also rooting for whatever crazy s--t hackers pull next.
@PegasusActual93 the ps4 was jailbroken in 2016, a mere 2+ years after it released. there is a lot of misleading information circulating, making people think this is a new development. the ps4 exploit for firmware 9.0 is new, yes, but prior to this the exploits worked on older firmwares.
@GoodGame Thanks for the advice! I will check him out
I've never been tempted to jailbreak any of my consoles or handhelds before, they've always ran smoothly for me.
