As long as SEGA's around, it's gonna keep on making Sonic games, whether you like 'em or not. The next mainline game in the franchise was announced earlier this year with a super short teaser, but thanks to our main man Geoff Keighley, we now have a better idea of what to expect.
Sonic Frontiers — yep, name confirmed — has been properly revealed, and wouldn't you know it, the fastest thing alive is heading into an open world. The trailer even throws in some Breath of the Wild style shots to show it off.
We have few details right now, but it looks as though we will indeed be speeding through a fully open world environment, a first for the series. To be honest, the world presented in the above trailer looks pretty empty and one-note, but obviously we're about a year away from the final thing. Hopefully there's much more variety in locations throughout the sandbox.
Anyway, Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for holiday 2022 on both PlayStation 5 and PS4. What do you think? Give us a ring in the comments section below.

I missed the adventure fields from Sonic Adventure.
@AstraeaV Me too! Hopefully this will be like one giant adventure field!
They'll screw this up somehow, I can always count on Sega messing up Sonic more.
I have no hope for 3D sonic anymore, I just want sonic mania 2, or at least a port of christian whitehead mobile sonic port on ps4/5 since it has true widescreen.
The Legend of Sonic: Chili Dogs of the Wild
Curious to see actual gameplay.
Why can't they just do Generations 2
Good. I'm so tired of "3D" Sonic games being extremely basic, safe, and mostly 2D. Is an open world too ambitious for Sonic Team? Maybe, probably. But it's nice to see a game with some actual scope and budget put into it after Forces and it's milquetoast efforts. And if they actually pull this off, fantastic.
@wiiware Sonic Origins is the latter.
It looks good actually. Just need to see some gameplay. I still have a feeling Sega will somehow screw this up though. 😑
Kinda got Sonic 06 vibes from this trailer
Fingers crossed they can pull off 3D Sonic for once, Generations had promise from what I was told.
Super speed in a big open world is something i've wanted for ages and as The Flash is yet to get a game i will take Sonic happily.
@Orpheus79V They tried and couldn't even get that right: Sonic Forces
Running around in an open world could be fun but since it's Sonic they most likely will screw it up somehow. Also from a Sonic trailer I'd hope to see fun gameplay and not shots of the environment
@DualWielding That is basically what Forces was.
Looking forward to seeing more for it! Would love to see the Chao garden again like in Adventure 2
@Haruki_NLI They tried what? I wouldn't consider Forces to be trying at anything. It's everything I said in my first comment. Basic, safe, milquetoast, mostly 2D, low budget - the premise had potential for a lot of scope but literally nothing was done with it.
@Orpheus79V Generations 2.
Classic Sonic, boosting in 3D, little twist with the avatar sure.
Functionally, as a game and premise goes, it's Generations without the time travel.
Would love to see this tie into the comics somehow now that they're loosely connected. The open world reminded me of a lot of the open areas shown in the comics, again, loosely.
this was just a cutscene man .
If and it's a big IF, that they can pull this off then I'm all for it. Gives me and my boy something to play. I really want to see upgrades in this sonic, upgrade his boots, some accessories and even some extra cool unique upgrades that add some abilities. Something that fleshes it out more. I'll keep my eyes on it for sure.
if it’s not graphically superior and faster to unleashed then it’s weak-sauce
It looks interesting. Kudos for taking the chance.
@wiiware No disrespect but i really dont get the love for the 2D sonic games its really not for me its so boring. If i think back about Mario, Metriod, Donkey Kong that where some fantastic games. But i guess its a required taste.
@Flaming_Kaiser Sonic 1, 2, 3, (and mania) is a really good game. The rest is not as good though.
@wiiware all those games are really old except mania , and mania wasn’t even made by sonic team . the last 2D sonic they made was sonic 4 , right ? & how’d that turn out….
& if they made a mania 2 , i hope it has a lot less gimmicks . even the bosses were more gimmicks than boss fights
@wiiware No hate but Sonic somehow does nothing for me i really hoped i would love it i really like 2D games.
