We're quickly approaching Christmas Day, so shoppers are snapping up this year's most popular games to wrap up and place under the Christmas tree (younger users, read: send off to Santa Claus). Therefore, the top three titles are the exact same as last week: FIFA 22 tops the list, Call of Duty: Vanguard is second, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe takes the bronze medal. It's not the most exciting weekly instalment of the UK Sales Charts, but at least there are a couple of interesting talking points further down the list.
New entries include Among Us and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition. They take the fifth and sixth positions respectively. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has also received a Christmas sales boost, reaching fourth place after claiming ninth last week. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was in 11th according to GamesIndustry.biz.
Returning to Among Us, 41 per cent of sales for boxed copies were for the PlayStation 5 and PS4 versions collectively. The two platforms just edge out the Nintendo Switch version, which took home 39 per cent of physical sales. And as for the remastered GTA Trilogy, it also sold best on PlayStation after garnering 67 per cent of boxed purchases in the UK.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 18th December 2021
- FIFA 22
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Among Us
- Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition

Ratchet and Clank almost back in the top ten is nice to hear. Not sure if we'll get another Ratchet and Clank this gen, after Insomniac seems to be very busy developing Marvel games. But you never know. The sales should be in favor for it.
Halo already out of the top 10 is crazy. All that talk that Game Pass boosts sales seems to be ridiculous now. Or maybe it just applies to smaller scaled games.
@JAMes-BroWWWn Halo not ranking is nuts.
I've noticed the percentile rates for achievement unlocks are stupidly low as well. Your bog standard, story progression achievements, which you'd expect pretty much every player to get, have really low numbers. Looking at them right now, the second equipment unlock, which you get really early in game, has only been unlocked by 17% of players.
This suggests to me either people arent playing the campaign, not a lot are playing the game at all, or a LOT of people are just playing MP. Either that or, the game is broken.
Halo is out of the chart but Just Dance 2022 at number 8 😆😆. Must be the Boris Cheese and Wine edition.
@AhabSpampurse MP is the best place - the game works because it feels so good, but everything else is pretty weak imo.
Its a shame because this was supposedly a chance for MS to show what their most powerful console was capable of, but its sadly missed that calling.
Still better to play really well, than to look fantastically next gen and play rubbish. Just felt that with this IP they could have done both..
@Integrity just dance makes sense cause all the wannabe twitch ladies buy this before they move to onlyfans...halo is nothing special either so why would people buy it instead of ''renting'' it?
@zebric21 I don't know what twitch ladies or onlyfans is, and I can't help but feel that makes me the lucky one 😊
@Titntin yeah, I'm playing campaign at the moment and I'm really enjoying the gunplay. I'm starting to have concerns that it'll turn into a Far Cry effort, where I'm just combing the map for the sake of completion and not really having fun, but luckily the traversal, shooting etc is great stuff.
Why would you buy among us physically for £28 when its only £3.29 on the store?
@JAMes-BroWWWn I think we have to keep in mind the context for Halo Infinite. It's coming off the back of Halo 5, and a six year gap filled with bad press,. Oh, and it's still missing long time, essential modes, like co-op.
You wouldn't put down £55 for just an unfinished campign, solo only Halo game. You'd try the campaign on GP and just stick to the "free" MP.
@Richnj they had 6 years to make the SP special. What were they doing?!
I think the percentage completion for doing certain things needs a bit of perspective, @AhabSpampurse.
Firstly, just as with Call of Duty and Battlefield, Halo is primarily played for it's multiplayer, though as opposed to those two franchises, people are far more invested in what takes place in the campaigns.
Secondly, the majority of people will look to play Halo in co-op, which is not yet available, and when it does become available, there will likely be an initial surge of interest in the campaign once again.
And thirdly, addressing percentages directly, 17% of 100 people playing a game, is a lot lower than 17% of 1,000,000. The point being that whilst 17% isn't particularly high, it could still involve a vast number of people. It has also to be said that the game is much, much bigger than the usual linear Halo fare, and it is possible to avoid that story progression for may hours if you wander off and explore the map (get all the collectibles, etc.)...
@Integrity Being 343 and messing it up.
@Richnj well, that is their speciality 😊
@Richnj @integrity Have either of you actually played the Halo Infinite campaign? I’m maybe three quarters of the way through it and it’s pretty special. From a pure gameplay standpoint, it’s a lot of fun to play. Not quite sure how I feel about the story yet, but it’s definitely 343’s best attempt with the series. That said, no, I’ve not purchased the game, but why would I if it’s on Gamepass and I’ve got a subscription? I suspect that the majority of the dedicated Halo and Xbox gamer base would have Gamepass and be doing the same thing I am to play it. I’m almost certain that most earlier sales for it were by the super fans that wanted a physical copy for their library.
@JAMes-BroWWWn As i said elsewhere many are just use Gamepass for it like most of my friends (i myself bought it) and its big selling point the MP is F2P and launched weeks ago. I doubt many 1st party Xbox games are going to do well in the charts going forward now that MS release all their 1st party games day one on Gamepass.
@AhabSpampurse Nothing broken at all and the campaign is considered one of the best in the series, for me its 2nd only to Halo Reach, its missing Co-Op for now but that's pretty much it for big issues. I won't repeat what i said to the other guy so if you want to see my reasoning why its left the top 10 read my other comment if you wish.
@WallyWest
I would just ignore the Xbox haters on this site theyre just mad sony doesn't have anything for them to play this holiday season and the only exclusive they do have is published by Xbox Studios
@Richnj Good points. It's just when I grew up Halo seemed to be the biggest thing. Now it was in the top ten for a week and it's already at the bottom of the top 20 in the second week. Feels so weird.
But your points make sense, the last Halo was in 2015, which wasn't that well received. So I think people are more cautious because of that.
@somnambulance No, but we can ackowledge how 343i struggle, and in which areas they failed, while also admitting this is better than their previous attempts.
Also, there's (I think) an estimated 30 milllions GP subs across PC and Xbox. Halo Infinite's potential market should really extend beyond that. And I think MS agrees, which is why they made the MP F2P.
@JAMes-BroWWWn Yeah, I do miss when Halo was big (my avatar might give that away).
I agree, @WallyWest. I finished my Hardcore collect everything run yesterday (playing on the GamesPass. First time I've not bought one of the series). I'm only guessing, but I reckon I probably took around 40 hours to complete it. I've now dived straight back into the campaign for a Legendary run, which I wouldn't have done that if the game was just middling. For me, the campaign is one of the best of the lot. I really, really enjoyed it. It's also not easy! Great game. Highly recommended...
@WallyWest hey man, I'm with you. I'm really enjoying it and love Halo as a franchise. It just struck me as unusual that the percentiles for story related achievements were low for such a big franchise. @Fiendish-Beaver does raise some valid points as well, mind. I'm only mentioning this as I don't want people think I'm crapping on the platform; I play all platforms, and everyone is eating good right now 😁
It depends on what is important to the platform holder - maybe Sales is the more important, maybe reaching as many people as possible is important. You don't see Forza Horizon 5 in the top 10 either despite having over 10m people playing it in the first week.
Sales stopped being relevant years ago when more and more people switched over to 'Digital'. All this tells you is that on PS, when you only have the choice to buy a Physical or Digital person, they are buying more 'physical' copies than Xbox which also has the option to play without 'buying' and even if they do go on to buy, much more likely to buy Digital with the extra Game Pass 20% discount.
It doesn't tell you which platform has the most players playing that game - something you could at one point readily conclude because the 'only' way to play was to buy it Physically. With people able to play via Game Pass or Digital purchases, the actual number of gamers playing on each platform is not known. Is it 'better' to have 1m sales 1m players or 10m players and 200k sales?
PS 'should' have the most because there are more PS consoles out there - maybe another reason Physical Sales are higher too.
@Fiendish-Beaver I'm still on my first run which I started on Legendary and Collecting 'everything', doing all the extras etc. I think I'm about halfway through the Skulls and completed most of the first few 'Islands' - still a few Audio Logs to locate but all FoBs, Bosses, Bases etc so far are done.
Its probably taking me 'longer' to do all these and progress through the story too because I'm on Legendary difficulty which can be 'Brutal' with the Bosses which is another reason to seek out all the Spartan Cores (my Shield is maxed out LOL), FoB bases etc to be 'better' prepared and able to take at least 1 hit without being obliterated and having to restart.
Halo Infinite’s campaign is incredible. And it’s not on the sales charts because it’s on GamePass. I didn’t buy it. So even Halo fans aren’t buying it. What’s hard to understand?
@AhabSpampurse No need to worry about it turning into Far Cry. There are super long campaign missions where you aren’t even looking at the map for hours.
@awp69 that's what I wanted to hear. Cheers pal.
By now we should all know that every game sells best on playstation
@WallyWest I am aware of Game Pass but I always thought that Game Pass was supposed to boost video game sales not completely erase them. At least to the executives at Microsoft. They constantly said that such a subscription model would assist in sales, as gamers would get a chance of playing these games before buying them.
As someone else in the comments replied to me and said that most who played Halo Infinite, hasn't even gotten the earliest Achievements. It just got me wondering, if the executives from Microsoft has totally missed their goal or does it just apply to smaller titles of the whole "Game Pass boosts sales talk.
Also Halo not ranking doesn't surprise me as its on gamepass and since gamepass is the only reason I see to own an xbox right now, I'd wager 90% of halo players are on gamepass.
@JAMes-BroWWWn
I don't think first party games would get a sales boost because they will always be on Game Pass. Generally speaking, games could get a boost if they are on Game Pass temporarily as people could buy a game to keep playing when it leaves Game Pass.
@JAMes-BroWWWn It boosts game sales more when the games leave GP. First party games never leave so I don’t think that’s what they are talking about. I know tons of people who are playing and loving Infinite. Not a single one bought it.
I was playing the PS2 port of GTA III this morning (which I bought before R* pulled it from the store) and honestly, apart from the lack of a minimap, it really didn't need the Definitive treatment. Holds up pretty damn well for a twenty year old game, no wonder it ended up being so incredibly influential.
What a shocker. Regardless of what a broken mess it is, Rockstar are still making a profit because idiots will go and buy it despite knowing all Rockstar care about now is money not product quality
I can't wait till we get RDR3 in 2031
@somnambulance
I have played through most of Halo Infinite campaign. It’s good gameplay wise, but I started going for all the extras on the map and I can see why it gets a touch of the far cry’s thrown at it.
The grappling hook saved the game for me.
For me the downside is the boring external environments, very little effects and variety.
Environmental it’s nowhere near on par with say Far Cry 6 and some of the water effects, pop in, smoke disappearing are terrible for a AAA in house game, especially after 6 years in development.
It should have been a wonderful environment full of top graphically looks, effects and variety.
If you like exploring like me it’s dull.
It should have been on par with far cry 6 in that way and knocking on HZDFW door, instead it looks so last generation and a bit ugly.
@JAMes-BroWWWn I think its more it boosts sales of DLC and such then the games, Game Pass isn't a trial thing you get the full package so unless you want to own the game like i did there's very little point in buying the games when Game Pass gives them with barely any restrictions for a small sub price. As i said though the main draw of Halo is the MP and that's F2P and was launched weeks ago, a lot of people only care for that so mostly likely won't touch or barely touch the campaign. I suspect if Gamepass wasn't around and the MP was part of the base package then sales would be a lot higher.
@AhabSpampurse Oh i agree right now gaming is pretty good for me at least with all 3 consoles giving me lots to play, if anything right now i have too much to play and a never ending backlog haha.
I think you'll find the major items that sell are those linked to games on the GamesPass such as DLC, expansions and cosmetics etc., @JAMes-BroWWWn. That is where much of the money raised for First Party games comes from as most of these games bring revenue in through being played rather than bought (all games receive revenue for simply being on the GamesPass) but First Party games remain on the GamesPass basically forever. The situation is slightly different with Third Party games in that they are discounted at the point of leaving the GamesPass (something First Party doesn't do), and so this can bolster their sales at this point. Ultimately, many games are tried out and bought if liked, and so they can enjoy decent lifetime sales even if not bought at the point of release...
Edit: Er, whoops! I see that a number of people have already made the points I made. Sorry...
@somnambulance Oh regardless what doomsayers want to say, Halo Infinite is selling a LOT. Just go check the Steam top charting list. The campaign is still #3 top selling game.
If you go to the Amazon Top Video Game item list, and only count the video games, Halo Infinite is #4, and almost everything else is Switch Games.
As far as this article goes, though, it's obvious that Physical copy sales of GTA trilogy would dominate on PlayStation.
For some reason Xbox physical copies won't release yet, and the Switch physical copy is a scam, since it still requires a 28GB download to play any of it.
I did my first run on Hardcore, @BAMozzy, and some of the encounters were really challenging. I missed only one skull and one UNSC log on my travels, which is mildly annoying, but I can pick them up as I progress through my Legendary run. I haven't long started my Legendary run, and am about to enter the Tower (mission 4 of 15) via the Gravity Lift. Really not looking forward to the end mission boss as he gave me a kicking on Hardcore. I don't imagine that he is overly friendly on Legendary either.
Will you be going for the Achievement for a Legendary run with all Skulls? I imagine that will be nothing short of brutal...
@Tharsman @Dezzy70 While I agree that, visually speaking, Far Cry 6 is beyond Halo in environmental details and visuals, I honestly feel Halo’s open world is superior to it. I enjoy traversing it, plain and simple, and there’s always some form of action on the horizon, but I’m not really doing much in the way of extras outside of what I just randomly stumble into. I’m having a lot more fun with Infinite than I had with Far Cry 6, personally.
I sort of thought Far Cry 6 was hard to get into, despite the fantastic environmental visuals. It’s one of the only gaming purchases I’ve regretted making this year.
For me, as I’m nearing completion on it, Halo is clearly in the top five games for me this year, even if the story doesn’t go anywhere, and that’s purely because the gameplay is just so fun to play. I think the game is a success and, by any metrics I’ve seen of actual active users, it seems the game is successful as well. For some reason, there’s been doom and gloom surrounding Halo for a long time now. I’m glad I finally got the type of Halo game I’ve wanted for years.
@somnambulance I think they are different beasts, visually.
I am a huge Far Cry fan, and beat 6 a few days ago. But Halo does something I wish more "open world" video games did: make the story focused missions dungeon-esque. Give me an open playground to explore in between missions, as an option, but once you put me on a main mission, make it feel like a level that was designed to be played, not as another base to take down.
At the same time, I do find Halo does not have enough biomes to give its world diversity. Its all tech dungeons or foresty areas. Hope if the plan is to expand the story via DLC, that they start adding more variety to both, the outdoor biomes and the type of indoor architecture. This is not me saying its bad at all, just saying how it can improve as they deliver more content, and I honestly expect them to start adding chapters over time. If I'm deciphering their messaging from a year ago, they will likely be adding new campaign content at least once a year for 10 years.
I am sure the game is already a success, but at the same time I don't think its the success they wanted, because had it been, they would had bragged about it the way they did with Forza Horizon 5. But maybe I'm wrong and they holding up their braggings news post for some special occasion.
@Fiendish-Beaver I doubt I'll do the Legendary 'all skull' run - maybe would co-operatively if someone else was interested in doing it.
The Tower Boss kicked my Ass quite a number of times - that's the cloaked boss one isn't it after getting the threat detector. I'm at the 'dig' mission but like I said, I'm trying to go round everywhere else but the Dig so I have a lot of Spartan Cores to immediately upgrade new abilities (already Max Shield), special weapons unlocked in bases and of course stronger 'support' from the marines. I have collected all the audio logs in 'bases' and missions so just missing a few from each of the open world sections but have found a LOT without using any guides for those yet. Some of those I may spend time with a guide but at least can find a LOT just chasing down lockers, cores etc on the Map...
@JAMes-BroWWWn Game Pass is designed to boost player engagement, get people in and playing the games without the price tag being a barrier to entry.
With Halo 5 'disappointing' core fans and the state of the 2020 trailer, if it was 'sold' you'd have a LOT of fans wondering if its worth the price tag etc maybe even put off from buying at all but on Game Pass, you can 'try' it, play it all and find out for yourself.
Long term, it may well benefit a number of games. Those 3rd Party games that leave removing 'access' for those who subscribed, so they may well end up buying it Digitally down the line. Some may well decide to buy after trying that perhaps wouldn't have bought at all so long term may lead to more sales.
When you compare say Returnal or Ratchet & Clank for example to Forza or Halo, the number of physical sales could well be higher - first because there are more PS5's in peoples homes and secondly because the only way to play those games is to buy them. On Series X, Physical sales will be lower because 'fewer' owners have the capability to play Discs due to 'fewer' Series X consoles out there - no idea on whether Xbox or PS gamers tend to buy more digitally so 'assume' its a similar percentage.
However that's NOT the only option - Game Pass means that I don't have to buy to play, and then if I do decide to buy, with Game Pass Discounts, it means that I am more likely to buy it digitally. Because I am not spending £50+ to play Halo, I can spend that money on maybe buying some digital games in the sales, buy some DLC content etc so am buying 'more' content and because I maybe buying more Digitally (thanks to Game Pass discounts as well - 20% off games, 10% discount on DLC which makes it 'cheaper' and more appealing and having more 'disposable' income as I am not spending £50+ to play Halo), that money is going through MS stores and being 'digital', maybe 'months' after release too, they are not going to be counted in 'charts' and accurately reflect the popularity of a game.
The difference is that if R&C sells 1m copies, only 1m people have played it. If Halo sells 200k, that has no relationship to the number of players and player engagement - just the sales chart. Halo could have 20m people playing it in the first week and still sold less than Returnal. I know Halo is available on XB1 so can have more players, but more importantly, has a much higher percentage of Series X gamers that played it - less than 10% of PS5 gamers played Returnal vs over 50% of Series X playing Halo for example (numbers for ILLUSTRATION purposes - not ACTUAL figures as I have no idea of Halo Infinite player numbers on Series consoles). No-one would predict that Sea of Thieves would sell 25m copies but over 25m have played it....
Anyway, getting back to the point, the point of Game Pass is to get people into the Xbox ecosystem, remove the barrier of price to even try the game, and get more people actually playing the games. If you are 'in' Xbox ecosystem, gaming 'more' on Xbox because of Game Pass, maybe buying more Digitally too (so not going to show in a lot of Sales Charts), that's more important to MS than being the 'best selling' game for Dec 21. Having say 10m players playing Halo is more important than selling 1m physical copies...
@Tharsman I agree. I like how Infinite is essentially a typical Halo game with distinct levels that are buffered by the open world environment. It’s unique. It’s actually a refreshing open world concept. In a way, the game reminds me more of Breath of the Wild than I ever would’ve expected with that open world/dungeon dynamic. I’ll agree that the game could use more biomes. It could use beaches and snowy mountains, but the lack of them doesn’t ruin my experience. The biome presented is pretty much a Combat Evolved biome and I love it for that. The gunplay is just flawless too. I can’t wait to see where they take the game. I’m not even through the game and I’m excited for what the DLC could do for the game.
I think, if anything this chart proves how boring & predictable people are.
Why pick up a copy of Kena or Deathloop when Fifa 22 would look so good on the shelf next to Fifa 21😐🥴
@MyThoughts31 lol, idiots that have enough money to buy what they want, can't be that daft...
The low sales for Xbox aren't really surprising (and it is probably a similar situation digitally), its well known to be the 'gamepass machine'. No idea what the people who claim it will boost a games sales are smoking.
The new Halo was an average FPS that lacked lots of features from previous Halos... Also, zero environment diversity made the game monotone. The "open" portion of the game felt redundant. And its presentation, compare to other FPSs, was lackluster.... GamePass or not, I can see why people would skip it (not buy it).
@Balosi yea, those that claim that, need to wake up from Lalala Land. That notion came from one of many of the BS statements Phil S. usually say.
@JAMes-BroWWWn Gamepass can help boost sales of game that already reached their peak after release. It not gonna help boost sale of a game releasing day 1, and isn't gonna leave the service.
Been playing Halo Infinite through xCloud on my MacBook Pro M1. Definitely 343i best Halo game, my second favorite of the main numbered games, my third favorite in the mainline franchise, and my fifth favorite in the franchise.
GAMEPASS is trash, subscription based gaming will end creativity in gaming. Microsoft is hanging on by a thread. The switch sold more than then x1 and was out half as long. 130 million people own a playstation 4 or 5, not even 100 million own an Xbox why do you think betas are on sony. Sony games sell more copies than xboxs in circulation why would sony try to copy someone that cant keep up, xbox was done along time ago thats why they are milking it with subscription service. More Playstations sold than xboxs ever will be eat itm
Yes, it is the one that cloaks, @BAMozzy. I've just defeated him on Legendary, though it took me a while as I went in somewhat underpowered. My shields, for example had only one upgrade (15% more), which was not the best of moves. I also went in with an ammo light Magnum, and so had to pick up a new weapon mid fight, which made things tricky as he kept attacking me when my back was turned. I'll be surprised if many actually finish Halo Infinite on Legendary. It's definitely the hardest one, in my opinion...
Just curious.. why is Fifa 22 such a big seller?
Nobody I know plays FIFA
Nobody talks about FIFA
I've barely ever seen anyone review FIFA
I''ve not seen people stream FIFA
I've never seen any hype about FIFA
Nobody raves about FIFA
Media doesn't cover FIFA
Fifa 20XX seems like it's the same game as FIFA 20XY (and previous years) except for roster changes. (?)
Etc FIFA.
But it's the #1 spot? Not knocking the game, but anyone have an idea why it's so popular yet it's almost invisible in any coverage anywhere?
@Abrothers587 I can't comment on whether gamepass is trash, but it apparently works for them, so your assessment probably is only a minority opinion.
Even if it is - the prospect of getting a bunch of games you'll never play for a subscription price is alluring to people. Look at PS Now. I have it and I think I'm an idiot for paying for it. Even if there's good game I want to get to - it may only be avail for a limited time. What is with that BS?
Netflix works on the same principle. A bunch of mediocre entertainment things you can use at your fingertips - even tho you'll barely watch the content.
Must be something in the human psyche that makes us think value for money is a lot of crap for one low price.
This tells me only dumb dumbs play PlayStation
@Party_Cannon netflix was pretty great before every other company decided they wanted a slice too.
The streaming tv/film situation is now at the point where just going back to buying your favorite dvds is looking like a financially prudent option.
@Loftimus its to trick nana's into spending
