Good lord, Techland doesn't shy away from making impressive-sounding promises, does it? The Polish developer raised eyebrows last week when it stated that Dying Light 2 would take 500 hours to "fully complete" — something that the studio had to clarify just a couple of days later. And now, Techland's saying that Dying Light 2 will be supported with updates and DLC... for five whole years. Wowzer.
This isn't totally unprecedented, either. The first Dying Light, released in 2015, continued to receive updates years after launch — and we're still waiting on the promised PlayStation 5 patch!
Now look, we don't expect Techland to flood Dying Light 2 with new content non-stop for five years — that would be mad. But it does sound like the company has big plans for the upcoming open world adventure. It'll be interesting to see just how much of a 'live service' experience Dying Light 2 turns out to be, potentially flaunting things like limited time events and daily quests.
In any case, we've got a seemingly huge game that's only going to grow. How do you feel about that? Best start preparing for the zombie hordes in the comments section below.

'Til 😊👍
I'm not sure what the point of announcing this is? Do people buy a game at launch with this in mind? When I read reports like this, or the one about 500 hours of content I'm mildly irritated because all I want from them is to make sure the game is fit-for-purpose at release. And it would be nice if games were ready enough by the time they go gold without requiring a huge day 1 patch.
@Integrity Nope, Till is correct!
(Also mostly agree on your points about the game.)
@Integrity Thats why i always laugh when people say games are getting more complicated to develop.
Dont get me wrong i understand games are getting more detailed and bigger but isnt the industry pushing it that way themselves.
You have 500 hours of content why not try to polish as good as possible for the release and then start working on all the extra content.
Liveservice is almost a getting a excuse to release broken games which get defended by many reviewers which say yeah they will patch it later.
There's that 500hrs
Going by the fact they still support Dying Light i can believe this, the support was pretty insane.
@Integrity I see a game like this as a fun co-op game to play through, so it will be nice to have lots of content and reasons to come back to it. I always treated this series as a sort of survival game even though it’s basically a linear story, the replayability is pretty good, and I welcome the length of the game to make it worth the investment.
Honestly, who the hell is going to play Dying Light 2 for 5 years? Do people really return to these games ten times over 5 years and spend money each time?
@KippDynamite The same people who have played the original for the last 6 years I'd suspect 👍🏼
They did amazing support for Dying Light so makes sense.
@KippDynamite Dying Light 1 exists so yes very much so.
@Nepp67 @DonJorginho
So there are known individuals who've spent money on Dying Light 1 every few months for the past 5 years? Fair play if they have, but I've never known anyone who plays games this way.
What if this is not what I (and probably many others) want?
I don't want a half-assed game that needs tons of DLC to be worthwhile to play long-term. Look at Dark Souls, Bloodborne etc. I frickin love those games and they each had only ONE DLC package.
I just want a game that is polished at launch, that I can finish in a few days and decided for myself whether the game is good enough to replay. Don't want DLC packs smothering the experience every time I log in.
@MyThoughts31 I'm expecting every update to take 500 hours to fully complete. Positioning yourself in every possible location and looking at every possible brick and blade of grass on the landscape. You know, what 100%-ing a game means.
It's a shame the ps5 dying light 1 patch hasn't arrived, they've kind of missed the boat now so close to the sequel's release.
What’s the shocking thing about this, they have said years ago they would support the sequel for a long time and look at all the stuff they added to the first one
Here's looking at you, GTA V. Ya done good kid, ya done good.
@NeThZOR I agree with you. It certainly seems that self-contained and complete single player experiences are a dying breed. It’s a way of repackaging the concept of episodic games, I suppose.
Could they just make sure what is released is 100% polished and feels like a complete experience? If we enjoy the experience we will ask for more, if your game is crap than why would we want 5 years worth of new content layered on top of crap?
Hope it's good. If it's not, horizon and elden ring are still coming and I might buy sifu if that turns out good. Can't handle the 4 tho.
Gt7 and FF origins not too far.
More like 5 years of half assed tacked on weapon bundles like the first game. There's $133 worth of DLC for DL1 and it's all just skins and weapons that should have been included in the base game. This is the horrible future gaming is headed deeper into where you go 7 years without a sequel because you can just milk your one game with cheaply made DLC. Release on PS Now and GP a few times to get people to play and then buy DLC for a game they don't even own and milk it some more.
5 years? They can't expect us to stick to 1 game for that period of time, it's silly, other games come out and you want to play them it's just impossible to stick to 1 game like that 🙄
This is one of the gripes of modern gaming, they don't respect your time and they are a never ending grind, this is not fun or something to be excited about 😤😤
And by the time you complete all 500 hours and 5 years of DLC, Elder Scrolls 6 will still be in planning phases of development...
Hmm. I just read an article saying that the game won't support cross-gen or crossplay at launch. So you won't be able to play the ps5 version with ps4 players. Was really looking forward to playing with my brother as I have a ps5 and he's got a ps4. Disappointed...
@NeThZOR They are doing what they done with the first game what still has a big active playerbase, believe it or not they aren't making the game with you just in mind.
Looking at the comments here i swear everyone never played the first game because DL2 is just being treated the same as the first game. Its a healthy mix of free DLC and nicely priced paid DLC, The Following DLC for instance was a massive expansion at a cheap price what could have been its own game due too what it added.
@Blue_Persimmon Heard talk last year that last gen versions are a mess as the game was made with current gen and PC as the lead platforms. I would advice waiting until reviews before jumping on the PS4 version.
@huyi have you heard of the little sleeper hit GTA:V?
@KippDynamite so you don't know anyone who has played, say, destiny 2 and it's frequent dlcs.
Or cod with it's battle pass.
Or apex legends and it's battle pass.
Or forknife and it's battle pass.
Or buying the same madden or fifa, year after year.
Or someone who pays, monthly for WoW or ffxiv or...
No takers here, then?
5 years? lol dang... that tells me no "dying light 3" to come out in new gen, huh? in 5 years we'll almost be seeing PS6! i stayed with the "left 4 dead" series for 5 years, but ps4 came out, i switched over. i would have still played L4D, too, if they remastered it and put it on playstation, but they never did and never will im sure. as for dying light 2 in this regard... it'd have to have some kinda.. super fun... extra mode(s) to play that were HIGHLY replayable, co op, new maps every few months, etc.. for me to stay invested in Dying Light 2 for 5 years (or throw in a sandbox level maker ala Far Cry 5 style). unless the DLC are actual campaign co op map additions where they unlock new parts of town or new towns entirely, countryside, old run down military bases, etc.. i couldnt see myself stickin around 5 years in this game... i couldnt even stay invested in a Far Cry game for over 5 days let alone 5 years lol!
i'd be happy with a solo and co op campaign, 3-4 players preferably, 1440p or higher res, 60 frames. i'd be fine! dying light is a game i run thru once, maybe twice, then im done forever. 5 years?! they better impress the crap outta me with DLC.
@PhhhCough
Ha! I actually don't know anyone who plays those games, but you make a decent point nonetheless. But are people spending money on the same game over that long a period of time? Like, an individual spending money on destiny each month? I guess I just play way too many games to commit that much to one game.
I would have thought they would have released the PS5 patch before the new game comes out. I would have loved to run through it again before starting the new one.
They did deliver Dying Light 1 which was in decent shape at launch and was a great game. They also did support the game for a long time and delivered what I considered a very impressive DLC in the Following. Expanded the world a great deal. So, although I will wait and see after some of the recent messes with great reputation developers, Techland has shown a track record of supporting the DL 1 game and delivering great experiences. Just hope we have not all been tainted forever when devs are excited and passionate about their projects because of the recent ones who lied and/or misinformed.
All this does is confirm I won't buy it for a few years til I can get a solid compilation edition. I don't like returning to games. I'd rather play it all.
Promises, promises. How many games are still relevant after five years? Not many.
@Flaming_Kaiser Ikr?
People need to realize games back in the day were just as complex to develop because technology back then was not nearly as sophisticated and advanced, not to mention it was not as easy to share development and debugging tips on the internet/communicate from faraway as easily.
Not to mention nowadays video games have a much larger market share and video game companies are much bigger with bigger audiences and bigger budgets than before.
I don't see why we need to settle for less now just because, if anything it should be more
Dying Light Ultimate Edition is fantastic - they clearly supported the game and community for years and now are saying they will do it again. I am very excited.
Seems like it’s a good investment getting this game.
@BritneyfR_ee The first Dying Light is still active, they still update it and give it DLC with it even getting a Switch port this year. Its amazing how people can't grasp that the Devs are just going to do what they did with the first game with its sequel.
@NeThZOR
Dying Light was a complete game at release and all the dlc was like the cherry on top, so no I don't think this game will be half assed for dlc
@CrashLanded Always more is liveservice, broken releases, more expensive games, seasonpasses, 1/3 of the roster of a fighting games with something as basic as a arcademode. I rather have some quality releases then a bigger Ubisoft game.
Oh man I hope they put some kinda bozak horde 2.0 in this.
And even better if you can somehow smuggle a gun up your butt like last time LOL
@PegasusActual93 I get you. Dying light was complete. But Devs seem to launch games with strategies in place to leech money as much as possible. Even if it's just psychological how they get you.
@NeThZOR
Most of the dlc for the first game was released years after the original game, alot of which was free so not really so much leeching as thanking players for the support.
Yeah no I don’t believe them. They’re lying. Dying Light came out 2015 and is still being supported so won’t be surprised if they go for 10 yrs this time
Okay then, I guess I'll wait for the Ultimate Edition in 5-6 years .
@NeThZOR
I dont see this as being a half assed game though. The 1st game is still being supported, and it was more than a full game at release.
I just expect the same scenario.
