Is this the end of PlayStation? It’s always easy to get apocalyptic in situations like this, but it’s obviously not. Sony’s gaming division remains a wildly popular brand globally, and no single publisher can ever detract from that. Make no mistake, though, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $70 billion is a blow of unprecedented scale – this isn’t just a haymaker or a right hook, it’s the manufacturer slumped against the ropes, blood dripping from its mouth, while it desperately gasps for air.
You might not like Call of Duty or any of Activision Blizzard’s other games, but you need to understand this: every year, the publisher’s first-person shooter is one of the biggest games on PlayStation. Call of Duty: Vanguard actually underperformed a little, meaning that in terms of 2021 PS Store sales, it was forced to sit behind FIFA 22 and NBA 2K22 in Europe and North America respectively. But typically, it’s Call of Duty at the top – year in, year out. And all its players contribute enormously to Sony’s bottom line, be it through microtransactions or PS Plus subscriptions.
Now it’s still unclear whether Activision Blizzard games will become exclusive, but we’ve been here before: there were a number of wishy-washy statements released about Bethesda before the buyout cleared, and then suddenly there was no more Starfield. Ultimately, we can infer a lot from this particular situation: service-driven games, like Call of Duty: Warzone, for example, may remain – that’s been true of titles like Fallout 76, after all – but anything else is almost certainly gone for good. The implications of this to Sony’s bottom line cannot be understated.
In the cold light of day, looking back, the Bethesda buyout for $7.5 billion did make sense. This was a publisher that was signing timed exclusivity deals with Sony, and was reducing the price of its games drastically within months of their release. It was also a privately owned organisation. Activision Blizzard is publicly traded – although its stocks have taken a battering of late, presumably making it all the more enticing to Microsoft’s upper-management. Still, we’re talking $70 billion in cash here. It’s, to labour a point, unprecedented.
So, what next for Sony? Well, this isn’t the end, obviously – but we may be witnessing the beginning of the end for PlayStation as the market leader. The Japanese giant has done an outstanding job of growing its intellectual property over the past 15 years, and it’s now the steward of some of the biggest brands in gaming – but it’s not Nintendo, and it’s always used its exclusives as additive to a robust third-party content slate. The removal of Bethesda was a blow it could weather, but Activision Blizzard is a gut punch that’s going to leave the company battered and bruised.
We won’t see a change in the immediate future. This acquisition will take some time to close, and it’ll be business as usual – presumably with less sexual harassment – for the next year or so. Sony will continue to sell as many consoles as it can manufacture, and the likes of God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West will be big hits. This is going to take time to manifest, and the impact on PlayStation’s bottom line will be slow and subtle.
But conversation has been dominated recently by Xbox Game Pass and Sony’s rumoured Project Spartacus reboot, with the sentiment being that PlayStation simply doesn’t have the funds to compete on Microsoft’s level. That conversation will once again be brought into sharp focus: there’s no acquisition that the Japanese giant could feasibly make to fill the void of one of the biggest brands on its platform, and it’s not going to be able to develop a comparative competitor – practically every publisher in the industry has been trying to dethrone Call of Duty for the past 15 years and failed.
So it’s going to have to double down on the first-party franchises it’s got, but whether it can sustain itself in the way Nintendo has over the years is up for debate. If we’re being optimistic about it, that might make for a more varied and diverse software slate, but PlayStation is unlikely to enjoy the benefits it historically has as a market leader. Presumably, this will force Sony to strengthen its relationships with the remaining third-parties, like Ubisoft and EA, but when Microsoft’s in this kind of mood we wouldn’t rule out further buyouts down the line.
And none of this addresses the elephant in the room: Xbox will be bundling every game into its Game Pass subscription, and while the economics and end goal of that particular service still remain head-scratching, the Redmond firm is clearly not short of a buck or two. In addition to losing one of the biggest franchises on its format, Sony must also navigate an environment it deems “unsustainable”, which is putting its multi-million dollar software investments into a low-price, monthly service.
There has been some suggestion that Sony’s only way out may be to allow Game Pass onto its own platforms, which is an outcome we’re sure Microsoft would whole-heartedly embrace. But this kind of thinking ignores reality: PlayStation makes billion dollar investments into designing and marketing hardware so that it can reap the rewards through software royalties and subscriptions. It’s not going to put in the hard yards building a platform to then cede all of the income on that particular device to a competitor.
It’ll be a while before we see what the future holds for PlayStation, and there’ll be no change in the short-term. But as we write this article now, it’s hard to see Sony remaining the market leader. It’ll soon lose its biggest franchise for good, and we suspect this isn’t the end of Microsoft’s acquisition spree. It’s been a good run – an amazing one even – but eventually the big fish gobbles up the smaller ones. And right now, Microsoft is a shark.
How are you feeling about the Activision Blizzard buyout now you’ve had time to process the news? What do you think this means for PlayStation moving forwards? Go for the throat in the comments section below.

CoD is coming home baby!!!!
This was the only way for xbox to become relevant and survive, to completely wipe out the competition by buying all the big third parties and I can guarantee it won't stop at Activision.
Sega, Warner Bros or ubisoft will be next
Microsofts end goal is to make sony say f**k it and leave the console market behind.
Its a very sad turning point for gaming and my interest is waning the more this gen goes on
I love it, it might be uncomfortable for a while but it'll work out for the best - even if the best turns out that I abandon PS and focus on another ecosystem. Look back at the videogame crash in the 80's, devastating at the time but we all ended up better off. Game on!
Almost 1/10th of a TRILLION dollars to gatekeep gamers out. Talk about hate.

Imho this is the beginning of the End for Sony. In comparsion to MS and Nintendo they barely have any Cash on hand for any buyouts while also wasting tons of money on...E-Cars, their declining TV/Camera Subdivision and Sony Pictures. And now they will loose Millions of casuals and the NA Market as a whole probably while also already having lost the JP one. Seems like the PS3 era is repeating itself lol
My biggest worry is: who's next? If Microsoft can buy Activision for $70 billion then it can buy anything. EA? Ubisoft? SEGA? Capcom? Square Enix? Take your pick.
And to think, we thought $7 billion for Bethesda was ridiculous. Chump change in hindsight.
Short term, no impact at all.
Long term, yeah Sony will go the way of SEGA and for some reason Xbots find this to be very funny and welcome news.
One day when they're having to pay 3-4 times the amount each month for their GP subscription, they may regret their gloating.
Also, I think this is final proof that contrary to what Uncle Phil has said in the past, PlayStation are their competitors. For now at least.
I guess I'll switch to Xbox when Microsoft buys the trophy system. Also the guy that designed the dualsense controller. I can barely go back to the DS4 after the dualsense.
@ShogunRok
Sony.
@kyleforrester87 wow, what a trolling comment.
"Playstation has no games" - Casual
and that's bad because they are more of them than us.
MS wants their subscription service everywhere.....
This is going to be insanely hard for Playstation to come back from. As you mentioned, there is technically an optimistic side in the sense that Playstation are really going to have to bring their all and diversify their output of games if they want to stand a chance, but I'm quite cynical about them pulling this off successfully. Guess we'll see!
If this gets approved it basically starts the end of standard gaming as we know it. MS is brute forcing their way to control of the industry and games and gamers will suffer. You think you're going to get the same type of games with your $15 a month sub? You're basically going to be paying for free to play games.
Anyone who thinks this positive in any way is a delusional fool. Sony and Nintendo didn't brute force their way into being industry leaders, they made great games and let the consumers choose. They didn't take away massive games from other platforms to make their platform look better. This is terrible for everyone.

Never been happier to own a PlayStation.
Sony’s net worth since 2018:
2018 - $61.55 billion
2019 - $62.33 billion
2020 - $84.04 billion
2021 - $127.98 billion
Microsoft currently sits at $456.132 billion.
I don't care much for cod so no loss from me, crash on the other hand is different
If Toys For Bob makes a Banjo game and Bobby Kotick leaves the industry I’ll honestly consider this a win. We’ll see though.
@jrt87 What massive publishers did Nintendo buy up to brute force their control of the industry? They did some shady stuff, but nothing compared to this.
It’s not good at all for the industry. And yeah, I’m incredibly disappointed in Phil for clearly choosing greed over the seemingly now baseless criticism of ActiBlizz and their horrible abuse.

I honestly don't care about anything Activision or Blizzard make so it doesn't personally affect me. It will affect many and it will affect Sony's bottom line though. I expect the loss of CoD will ensure the casual CoD only players will not buy a PS5.
I don't buy ps consoles for CoD. I buy ps consoles for the GoW, GoTsushi, hzd, spiderman, wolverine(now), days gone, etc. Their exclusives. Which is enough for me and others. I bought a ps4 solely to play hzd. And the other games were icing on the cake. Does this suck, for some, sure. But so long as it doesn't affect those great games, I'm good.
@IonMagi I am gonna be honest. MS buying Activision won’t impact Nintendo much.
But yeah, it’s a huge blow to Sony and PlayStation. PS has abandoned Japan and most Japanese developers are releasing former PS exclusives onto Switch and PC. Some Japanese developers are making Switch exclusives too. And now west is PC and Xbox now. I don’t know what will happen to PS now
I’ll always support the company that innovates and brings out great new experiences like PSVR. Now, I’m in a position of being an oldish gamer with more money than time and who likes single player experiences, so I don’t speak for everyone, but the low cost Gamepass model doesn’t appeal to me, and such consolidation is obviously only going to be bad for the industry, and the sub model bad for single player AAA games, so…I don’t like the direction MS are taking us.
That said, I’m also too old to be a fanboy, I don’t “support” a company or platform, so if Sony move to second or third best seller I really don’t give a damn. Just be profitable enough to keep innovating and providing me with games I like.
Its actually marking the decline and end of Xbox as a brand, to be superseded by Gamepass as the main brand for MS gaming.
@Col_McCafferty Take a look through your comment history sometime, and try to appreciate that people are entitled to their opinions and that you are not always right about everything. I'd appreciate you don't engage with me anymore if you can't be decent. Thanks!
Diablo is the only loss for me personally. That said there is no denying that this is a huge move.
Microsoft can't make their own quality AAA exclusives so they buy the people that do. It's unfortunate, because their way to win this generation is just acquire everyone which leaves nothing for Sony. At this point I expect MS buys Capcom, Square Enix and EA, keep every popular multiplatform off PS5...sad state of affairs too because while I own both I hate the Xbox controller and would hate to see the FFXIV Playstation playerbase screwed out of not seeing future expansions.
Completely agree with Col_McCafferty2 here.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm very surprised this acquisition wasn't Sega instead, especially when Sega and Microsoft have a good relationship with each other.
All you guys are high on drugs to think PlayStation will be out of business like what happened to sega. Haha.wtf.those other companies is selling theyre souls to Microsoft.but sony is always gonna outsells x box.word up son
Come on pushsquare, that's 4 or 5 doom and gloom it's all over for PlayStation articles in a row. Shall I put my PS5 on ebay right now?
Truly a bad day for the industry as a whole. I will always support Sony due to there high quality first party games but this definitely a gut punch.

CoD is obviously the big loss here. I’m not a huge fan of fps games but the PlayStation will be sadly lacking in that department soon. Maybe Sony need to create a new fps franchise? I know it won’t be anywhere near as popular as CoD but it would be something at least.
I can see a day in the future where Sony and Nintendo come to some sort of deal but obviously that’s not going to happen until Nintendo have another failed system like the Wii U
only reason why cod became big is because of the 100 million users on the ps4
360 was the platform of choice for cod that generation but still ps3 outsold the 360
cod dont sell 100 million copies on ps4
On the plus side, with Activision gone there's a huge gap in the industry now for indies to take over. That and PlayStation might put some money into a new FPS franchise if Call of Duty becomes exclusive.
Honestly I don't think MS will stop call of duty on PlayStation, this would really hurt a lot of Xbox users also who play with PlayStation users... I have both series x and ps5 so this doesn't effect me but I can't see Microsoft making cod an Xbox exclusive. No way ..
Might force Sony’s hand in to buying a bigger dev or publisher themselves?
Again, if you had said to me after Bethesda that Sony need to buy Square I'd have said "calm down".
The loss of Activision is not the end of PlayStation, but now I'm thinking they have to buy Kadokawa and Square.
Surely those subs would counter the loss of CoD somewhat.
Then just carve out your corner of the market like Nintendo have done and don't worry about it.
Is it doable though?
@anoyonmus nothing 3rd Party related bothers Nintendo since they can easily survive with Hardware sales and First Party Games. Barely any 3rd Party western IP sells that much on Switch anyway
@mus422
Don’t think so. MS would love if Sony tried to get into that battle with them though.
Sony should keep in creating their own IPs and true innovations like VR.
Think of how many devs and new IPs MS could have created with 70 billion though! Instead they pay to gatekeeper content.
@Shepherd_Tallon Nah, Kadokawa is the biggest Media Empire in Japan. Sony barely has any Cash on hands in comparsion to MS and Nintendo.
PlayStation creates new IP…God of War, Uncharted, Dreams, Infamous, Days Gone, Horizon, Ghosts of Tsushima, etc.
Xbox has Halo, Gears and Forza.
So Microsoft’s solution isn’t to be creative to benefit gamers, but to buy existing IPs to box other platforms out? How is this good?
Sony just needs to invest some resources in a COD-like clone. I don’t know why they haven’t done it before now tbh. Still a shocking turn of events mind you.
Still waiting for the condemnation against this kind of business practice though. If Sony had made this move, the reaction would have been one of anger. I feel like some are getting a bit too much satisfaction from this news.
Wonder how long before Gamepass gets a price hike? I fear for the future of gaming and i fear for Playstation.
@mus422 With what Money lol? If they could they would have done it already instead of buying tiny Studios without any IP worth
STOP the DOOM and GLOOM!!! Do your research!!! Phil baby has said in the past Xbox doesn’t consider PlayStation or Nintendo as their competitors ( looking at you Steam ). Xbox is transitioning out of the console business. Gamepass will be on future PlayStation consoles so Activsion/Blizzard games will be there!!! Long live King Sony and the global PlayStation empire!!!
I’m a PS gamer and don’t play anything from Activision but… how are people really upset at these big businessmen who focus on big business? To really think any of these companies are “for the gamers” only means you fell for their advertising and marketing.
Sony was expanding to becoming broader in scope and everyone hated it. That’s business. MS struggles to keep up with the competition when it comes to games alone so they just buy up the competitors. Now even if they keep games multiplatform they’re still getting paid. MS is playing ball like a good American capitalist🇺🇸
@Shepherd_Tallon Issue is Sony haven't got MS level money.
@IonMagi it’s only Japanese 3rd party that usually matters for Nintendo tbh.
Also I am just letting you and everyone else know that Ms can’t buy a Japanese developer due to certain laws in Japan that forbid foreign companies buy HUGE Japanese companies
Removed - discussing moderation; user is banned
@ShogunRok Sony may HAVE to do the same now. They might need to slump up the cash for EA or something to survive. They took COD? We’ll take Battlefield and sports games. I hate that it might be good business move, but instead of moving the industry forward this light become of a cash-throwing middle fingers to the industry.
I would honestly avoid buying an Xbox at this point to avoid supporting MS. They do nothing good for the industry and just survive by harming it at this point. I hope this all turns out to be unsustainable for them and backfires. I really do.
All in all, Sony still releases better games. That’s a fact.
@anoyonmus They can easily buy a JP company if Chinese Companies like Netease and Tencent can lol
@Shepherd_Tallon I'd rather have Square as a third-party, to be honest. They make some amazing games tailored specific to each platform.
@ShogunRok A US company can't just buy a Japanese company because they want to. If Microsoft wants any of those publishers like Sega, Capcom, etc they are going to have to find their way around some laws.
@lacerz It's not and it's also incredibly lazy of them.
I'd have a lot more respect for them, even been tempted to go back to Xbox, if they'd cultivated their own God of War or The Last of Us but instead they have just spent crazy sums of money in order to remove third party games from PS.
Pro-consumer my arse!
@Tasuki clown
So do we think Sony respond? They have made a lot of money lately there's no sign of Microsoft stopping I bet they will go for another company. As much as Game Pass is a great deal. I still prefer to buy my physical games and keep them forever. This is bad news for that. I always thought Capcom or Konami was a good buy for Sony with a great back catalogue of IPs. Not that I care for Call of Duty but My Three Sons will soon want xboxs if it becomes exclusive. Along with an lot more casual gamers
I don't think we'll see anything to drastic, but I'm sure xboys are going to love seeing Microsoft logo showing up more and more on PS5 🤣
I'm just glad I put money into a new PC.
Microsoft has infinite money. You can't beat infinite money.
@UltimateOtaku91 This is exactly my thinking as well, sad to see the only way for MS to survive is by purchasing Bethesda + activision (and more to come) instead of just creating better games.
@ShogunRok Good grief you lot STILL don't get it? Amazing and Netflix and Apple and Meta have all showing a great interest in gaming, all offer big service platforms, I won't be surprised to see them start buying up those publishers and studios you mention. Because that is exactly what Phil meant when he said Sony was not their competition anymore. Your eyes shouldn't by on Microsoft all the time..
This 'end of an era' clap trap is pure click bait knee jerk reaction. Sony aren't going anywhere, but I'd suggest they ditch the management there...
While I don't know how I feel about MS having so much control over the industry with this purchase I am happy about this purchase from one perspective, the employees of Activision Blizzard. I am cautiously optimistic that this will give them a chance to work and grow in an environment that does not actively promote and then cover up the issues that Activision Blizzard and Bobby Kotick have allowed to spread like a cancer in the past. Here is hoping that Kotick gets the boot after the papers are signed.
@ShogunRok Do you really think MS is interested though? If they truly wanted to hurt Sony they could have gone after Nintendo (market cap $60Bish), Epic (private), or Steam (also private). Activision will obviously affect Sony but Blizzard has a strong focus on PC and King is mobile. If MS keeps going I doubt it will be to "beat" Playstation. This deal clearly shows that they aren't on the same level of competition.
@WallyWest Indeed, but Sony do have the funds on hand to buy SquareEnix. The issue would be, do SquareEnix want to be bought?
@RenanKJ Agreed. I'd hate to see Dragon Quest taken away from Nintendo, for example. I just don't see how Sony can leave an ip like Final Fantasy out in the wild to be bought up at any moment.
PS launcher coming soon, ALL playstation games now available on pc through the launcher and day and date releases for steam/epic. Hardware manufacture almost completely shut down to try and cut costs. This is HUGE.
Don't worry, Sony are sure to make another smart purchase soon, remember when they bought EVO and Discord, we saw firsthand how happy PlayStation owners were now that they have a fighting game tournament and multiplatform messaging app. /s
This is such a win for PlayStation in my opinion. That publisher has been trash for some time, and it's interesting that Microsoft chose the purchase even though they are under public scrutiny for being a disgusting employer. Especially since Spencer went on record denouncing them and that practice, yet two months laters is like "but..... we like money and we are buying them anyways...." LOL. Now if we can just get a takedown of Ubisoft, EA, and rockstar (take two), It would make PlayStation on the way to becoming a console for gamers again.
Of course, that would also require Sony to do a complete 180 on this new rerelease cash grab nonsense that they have/allow naughty dog and others to keep doing.
But hey it's a start
@IonMagi well not western companies I think
I've currently got Gamepass for PC, but don't find any of the MS games interesting. Probably why they are buying up more 3rd parties and making them exclusive. Soon it will be the Netflix of gaming.
I've said this before but, everything will be a subscription service at some. I really don't think it means the end for PlayStation as a brand, but I do think it will accelerate the end of the traditional console model. Microsoft have said for a while that they don't care how many Xbox consoles they sell.
PlayStation will be an app, Nintendo will be an app and Xbox will be an app. You be able to access them on any internet capable piece of hardware you own.
Only the FTC can save Sony now
@anoyonmus Microsoft has an JP Subdivision (MS Japan) so they can get around this easily
Game pass will be on PlayStation eventually.
Thank god I hate those games
@Shepherd_Tallon they dont lol. Last we could read was that Sony has like 10 Billion Cash on hand which is 1. For the whole Company and 2
Barely enough to buy SE
This is terrible. Horrible. Awful. And I do own two Xbox Series (S/X) along a PS5 ... This kind of move will end destroying everything... Really... What's next??? This is Microsoft at it's worse.
I don’t like this at all. This is a scary move by Microsoft. Not looking good for PlayStation…
@IonMagi I’m pretty sure Sony can afford to buy most devs or publishers - it would easy for them to get backing from financial investors for a suitable deal
I haven't bought a COD game in years, Activision going to MS to grow stale makes sense. Sony is stacked with creative talent, as a Playstation owner, I'm content with Sony's products. MS is trying to gobble up what it failed to create in-house. Good luck with that MS.
Hell the saddest part about all this to me is losing my trophy list once Sony goes out of business. Ive put alot of work into that thing, lol.
$72 billion dollars is so much money. Good lord. I have to agree with others, if Microsoft is willing to dish this kind of money out for Activision/Blizzard, what's really stopping them from buying more? When money isn't an issue, you don't care what you buy.
FYI the entire NHS costs £56billion. So MS just spent the NHS budget on a games developer!
@mus422 Sony only Division making money is SIE and they barely invested in them for many Years now. Like I said, they have around 10 Billion Cash on hand for the whole company which is barely enough for any big Dev. Especially since they love wasting money on their heavily declining Electronic Division, Sony Music and Sony Pictures
Is there any chance Sony and Nintendo partner up?
Doesn't bother me on a gaming scale. I've never been a big multiplayer fan (stopped buying FIFA because of their greed. GTA Online is as multiplayer as I get) and have always been a huge admirer for solid storytelling you find with single player games.
I would be happy if PlayStation became the Single Player console, to be honest. As long as MS don't buy SE, EA/Bioware, Atlus etc then I still have no reason to turn my back on PlayStation. Maybe Sony should buy those to retaliate!
Been a PS owner and lover since the original PlayStation. And fingers crossed that doesn't need to change.
@Badheelman Honestly I don’t see why Nintendo would. This barely affects them at all.
I think there is plenty of blame to be shared with Activision who gave up console parity to sell out to Microsoft’s enormous offering. But this is business, and Microsoft has plenty of money to blow and we all know Sony has been anti-consumer at points as well.
@Badheelman Nintendo historically hates Sony since there failed cooperation before the PS1 came out and for pushing them from the No. 1 Spot. They also already have a sorta partnership with MS
I don't think it is the end of PlayStation by any stretch but it certainly changes the landscape somewhat.
No it’s great. Let’s PC gamers and Xbox community be happy with their COD and pc games. Better they spend $70b in those than on great studios let me tell you. 😅
As we all know, capitalism isn't infallible. Megacorporations, such as Microsoft, show the cracks. When your company has near-limitless money, they don't have to compete anymore. They just outspend the competition and squeeze them out, while getting bigger and bigger.
Its like watching a chess game.
Your move, Sony...
@IonMagi
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
In this case, enemy = competitor.
Doesn't the PlayStation brand make more money than Xbox and Activision combined though?
We live in fear of gaming studios being monopolized little by little. Thank God for indie devs. They are our saving grace in modern day gaming
@Badheelman Last thing Nintendo and Sony wanted is to be at each other's side. You can have Nintendo/Microsoft and Sony/Microsoft partnership but never Nintendo/Sony.
@johncalmc
It does. But that doesn't matter. The Xbox brand is propped up by Microsoft.
@TheCollector316 Nintendo doesnt see MS as an enemy tho lol, they allowed MS IPs in Smash, MS allows Golden Eye N64 on Switch and Games funded by them on Switch too (Ori)
@Ashina Why can’t you have a Sony/Nintendo partnership?
@get2sammyb The best way for Sony to counter it is to a GP service that's competitive so that MS want it on Xbox, in exchange Playstation gets Game Pass. Sony will need to start buying publishers though. They can afford it (they did set aside 30 Billion for acquisitions recently).
@SilverTangerine they tried that once before. Didn’t work well. Also Nintendo and MA have a partnership
So is no one else even just a bit concerned that Microsoft is spending literal billions buying companies that have some of the most popular games ever? Or is everyone just saying "haha more exclusives for microsoft"?
@SilverTangerine Sony and Nintendo did a partnership once to bring down SEGA. Didn't really work well for them. It ended up with Sony creating the Playstation, which became the Nintendo's direct competitor after SEGA decided stop making consoles for good
Although true but like the Bethesda deal, this changes nothing for me as I don't buy Activision games like COD. So I don't all of a sudden want to buy an Xbox or join PC because of this move by Microsoft. I definitely don't do any streaming neither. Again, this hurts Sony even more than the Bethesda deal.
These kind of purchases are surely bad for those smaller companies that sold their soul to Microsoft (the likes of Double Fine, Ninja Theory etc). Surely they become even smaller fish in a pond where the bulk of investment will be poured into the likes of COD etc. I guess we'll see.
Either way bad news for Playstation but potentially an opportunity if it reinvigorates their interest in Japan and Eastern developers. Sony have shown time and time again how resilient they can be (the nintendo betrayal leading to PS1 development, the ps3 launch, the network hack etc.). They have a chance to be interesting in all sorts of new ways. But it depends if the current leadership is able to safely steer the ship. But they cant win against Microsoft. Microsoft will buy big again (and lets be honest, it will probably be Ubisoft).
Ultimately the casual market will now inevitably turn to xbox and it will be a decision for Sony to make on how much they can continue to fight for a marketshare, or whether they turn to software development only (a la SEGA) which would be a great shame
@AdamNovice those 30 Billions are for the whole company. Means the majority will go into Sony Music and Pictures like always lol. They had no issues spending 1 Billion on Crunchyroll while spending barely any on Studios for SIE
Now I can ignore all Activision games on one platform, instead of ignoring them on multiple platforms. Win!
Can we collectively all just say: ***** the video games industry.
Why not buy Sony itself in the first place?
@TheCollector316 No, of course. But my point was that Sony's gaming brand makes an outrageous amount of money and so losing Call of Duty - if they do - is not as devastating a blow as people might think. It sucks for them, but it's not like oh no PlayStation is doomed.
Sony needs to head to the bank and pick-up Epic and Valve, fast!
I never played COD, but I understand the grief.
@johncalmc one of the reasons why their Gaming Devisions is making so much money are Casual Games like CoD tho which they are now loosing = less profit
Thank god, no more COD advertising in my PS store..
For a PlayStation centric site this has been real doom and gloom today. Most people buy PlayStation for the exclusives, and whilst Call of duty is for sure a kick in the stones for PS gamers I dont think it’s the end of the world. Perhaps having 4+ articles about how bad this is going to be maybe a positive article about what sony could do next, their VR project, the many many exclusives that they have coming out? Such negativity
Microsoft have done this more to bolster the PC market than console. Bar Call of Duty is there really a huge Activision franchise? Crash and Spyro are pretty replaceable.
The lack of COD does leave a gaping hole in Sony’s FPS library though. Who knows? Maybe the Chimera will rear their heads again!
Only way for Xbox to compete is to monopolize all the big third parties. Well stops me from buying cod and thats all i ever played from them. Xbox still cant make games close to Playstation as there big hitters in psychonauts, halo and forza are like flat 8 out of 10 at best and Halo has been bad since Bungie left
I can’t decide if this proves even more of an issue for Sonys pc venture, as they will start lacking some 3rd party content, at least in the medium term, and their first party will be on pc with all that Bethesda and activision content people miss. Microsoft may have lured ps to their doom with pc money.
Crazy days ahead! Does Sony stay the course? Sit idly by? Go to all out war? I’ve been following the machinations of this industry intensely since 1991, worked as a dev for a time, and this is up there with some of the bigger seismic shifts. It’s difficult to even parse the possibilities of how this plays out. Looking forward to Sammy’s continued coverage on this topic. It just got real!
@Nightmaremensis People said the same thing when MSFT bought Zenimax, and look how that turned out.
Clearly I don't pay a lot of attention as to which company makes what games.
Nevertheless, a decrease in competition in the market is good for producers and investors, but not likely good for consumers.
@Robinsad They at least heavily discounted the appeal of the PS5 with the outlook of being able to buy every First Party Game on PC down the line (and way cheaper too). Nintendo is smart of not doing the same.
@mucc Absolutely agree, this buyout, whether you game on Xbox or PlayStation makes the future of gaming look very bleak if you look at the big picture.
It’s not good for gaming at all. But I’m not buying this Sony doom and gloom stuff. Chin up, plenty of good things to come.
@Rob_230 If only Sony can go back to their roots and be a Japanese company again but that's wishful thinking (at this time at least). Anyway, Nintendo is dominating the Japanese market and MS will have a higher chance of dominating the west with these acquisitions. Sony might want to make a move soon though I'm positive that by the time they announce their next line of games, it will be just as big as this announcement. Sony already have their strong devs and all they need is to focus on fleshing out their IP
@velio84 is anything is ever happening between Apple and Sony then its the former buying the latter lol
@RadioHedgeFund don’t forget mobile and Metaverse. The former is huge within Acti-Bliz the later is what they were working towards
Taking Microsoft's bait on the PC stuff is Sony's biggest long term mistake. Their path forward is the Nintendo way: fight no war, build a console island with all of the exclusives.
Holy crap, the doom and gloom on this site is off the charts.
Nothing's gonna happen to sony because CoD goes away, the Ps5 will still be the king of this generation, just as the PS6 will after it.
MS just paid 70 billion (!) dollars for the CoD brand and a bunch of half-dead games from Blizzard... they bit themselves in their own foot, if anything.
i wish it would mean the death of the COD franchise but considering it’s xbox aka the “pew-pew dudebro machine” , it’s still going to continue & be depreciated & rehashed trash
@Tasuki Thats not my biggest issue but i will miss our PS mascots
@NinjaSixx Their TV, Camera and Phone Divisions are declining a lot especially since they cant compete with Samsung and LG. The only think making money for Sony is basically SIE
@savarunl COD is a system seller … the top selling game on PS is always COD .
Well at some point government regulations step in to prevent MS forming a monopoly so hopefully this will end at some point. For now Im not too fussed as I dont play Activision games and I think this might force PS into become more competitive. This will probably mean better value for ps plus for example.
@velio84 Apple is worth over 2 Trillion and waaay ahead of MS while also seeing them as their biggest "Enemy" so yeah, I see that happening. Especially with them already having a good relationship.
@Pepsiman_100 Lots of people are concerned but some see this as a chance to gloat.
I think it's very depressing news and I'm not sure Sony will have an answer. Make the most of your PS5, probably the last every console Sony ever make.
@patronmacabre i’ve been saying that since 8th gen
@ShogunRok They have contracs with the US Army so i guess no limits.
@Ashina That was almost 30 years ago though and I do understand the point you’re making, although valid, Microsoft also tried to once purchase Nintendo by flying out to Japan to attend a board meeting with Nintendo representatives and they pretty much laughed Microsoft out of their building. Now, Microsoft and Nintendo seem to be on decent terms and when it comes to business, there usually isn’t any hard feelings if there is a financial benefit for all parties involved so I can see Sony and Nintendo doing something IF this new Xbox acquisition becomes too exclusive.
If Sony buys Square, Capcom or Konami (each one have market value around U$ 6 Bi), it would be great.
But they don't have to. Suddenly everyone forgot the 20+ games in production, yet to be revealed by PS studios (half of them new IP), that were hinted by Jim Ryan...
This site, as a PS centric news web page, would do better trying to figure out what Sony as in its sleeves more than spreading news in apocalyptic ways.
Sony will come out from this fighting. They are not just going to lie down and take a beating.
@IonMagi I doubt it, Sony are investing in where growth is. Sony pictures don't need any acquisitions unless absolutely necessary, same with Sony Music. Those in the know have said Sony spent the past year buying up partners that had long relationships with. This year they are said to get more aggressive in their spending, it'll need to be because I can't see how Sony can sit back now when they run the risk of losing so many 3rd party support.
@IonMagi Market Caps
APPL 2.77 trillion USD
MSFT 2.28 trillion USD
Waaay ahead? Hmmm
@Qu1n0n3z
What are you talking about, look at this gen so far. Forza Halo please tell me what AAA games are currently on PS5 that compete?
Not to mention gamepass = SUPER Value
Ps5 games $80.. Get outta here
@mucc Nintendo tied publishers to deals so that they could only make a certain number of games per year and that they could only appear on NES. They also charged ridiculous amounts of money for blank cartridges and forced publishers to buy them in numbers that often left them unlikely to recoup the Dev and manufacturing costs. Back then, Nintendo controlled 85%+ of the games through these shady and unethical practices.
@Jarobusa well Apple is now worth 3 Trillion actually
www.forbes.com/sites/zacharysmith/2022/01/03/apple-becomes-1st-company-worth-3-trillion-greater-than-the-gdp-of-the-uk/amp/
And just like that PS has no First person shooters…Guerrila better get cranking on a new Killzone title ASAP
@Jay429 😂 are you having a laugh? I have Xbox as well and like gamepass but Xbox are no where near Sony when it comes to exclusives.
@AdamNovice I dont see this tbh. Their Crunchyroll 1 Billion aquisition for Sony Music is worth way more than any Studio they bought for SIE combined in the last few years lol
Gonna take the optimistic route and say this is a win win for me. I get COD on gamepass on my PC instead of paying 70 bucks, AND this is going to force Sony to be a lot more aggressive and get out of their comfort zone.
@Oriion I mean...theres still Battlefield haha
People being gleeful that CoD won't be on PlayStation are missing the bigger picture. It doesn't matter that it won't affect you but it consistently remains the highest selling game each year. That's a massive source of revenue for Sony completely gone when Microsoft pulls it from PlayStation.
There will also be other ramifications such as the casual players who only buy consoles for games like CoD, FIFA and GTA switching to Xbox. Sony already relies too heavily on its casual playerbase to sustain them but they simply cannot afford to have them leave. This will be a huge challenge for Sony when Microsoft tries to lure them with CoD on GamePass, Sony has no response and just look even worse with their £70 games. Meanwhile they've also begun to alienate longtime hardcore players by releasing better versions of their games on PC with extra bells and whistles not even available on their own platform. Now even the hardcore gamers will seriously question whether it's even worth remaining on PlayStation anymore, now that they can get Sony's and Microsoft's library all on PC.
@Jay429
Not sure if you're aware, but as far as exclusives go, Miles morales sold more copies in 2021 than almost the entire top 10 sold exclusive games on xbox alone
Halo sold almost all of it's copies on PC, and Forza isn't extrmely popular.
You all are a bunch of gloomy pessimists. Sure Activisions acquisition was out of nowhere but theres several things you all are forgetting.
1. Playstation is still out selling Microsofts consoles about five to one.
2. No matter how much money Microsoft brute forces I think even Xbox fans can admit that their exclusives have always been lacking and don't sell nearly to the extent.
3. Sony has been acquiring studios it has had great success with from the very beginning and is already putting good use to it unlike the Xbox brand who lets be real here has yet to really do much with it's studio aquisitions.
4. What does Activision have to offer these days? All their studios with one exception have been sent to work in the Call of Duty mines, a franchise whose popularity has been waning for years and other than Crash Bandicoot (which is admittedly synonymous with Playstation) going Xbox exclusive I doubt this will really effect many peoples purchasing decision.
So no I don't see this as meaning the PS5 will be the last Sony console as one commenter dramatically said above me. Calm the hell down.
This is a bad look for Sony and Microsoft. Sony looks like they won’t be able to compete and Microsoft looks like they can’t win without buying everything not tied down. This doesn’t affect me as I don’t buy their games. But this will affect me if Sony is unable to keep afloat. Of course that would be years away. Side note: they are keeping the current ceo in place 😳😳! That goes against Phil’s comment a few weeks ago about what went down there.
@savarunl You dont buy games on xbox , you have gamepass!
and a quick google search shows you are talking nonsense.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales Sells 6.5 Million Copies
Forza Horizon 5 has sold over ten million copies - Throw in the downloads on gamepass , and its GG bro.
@Oriion @truerbluer
Looks at my backlog of about 2 dozen shooters on PS5
No shooters?
@IonMagi That was true 3 Jan but not today.
@Jay429
Sure budyd, if you want to pay each month to play generic crap like Fifa and Halo 2348923809, then keep doing that while the rest of us play gems like Ghost of Tushima, Demon's Souls, Returnal, etc, etc.
Each to their own of course, but your original comment about MS doing better on the exclusive market is just making a fool of yourself.
Also on Forza sales, again, almost 70% of it's sales is outside the Xbox market, on PC. It has nothing to do with exclusives on console. If you're talking all platform wide, then sure.
This is where gaming is going. Big companies are consolidating all the talent they can for their platforms. Microsoft is the first to act in this new wave but Sony and Nintendo are already well established and fine.
The companies who are really getting hit up are the gaming hopefuls like Apple, Amazon, Tencent, who have the money to do this but are slow to act.
We are going to see many more acquisitions from all companies that can afford it and want to be serious players. This is where gaming has been going for a while.
@get2sammyb “even after this deal Xbox will only be the THIRD largest gaming company by revenue behind Tencebt and Sony.”
As I said above it’s a blow to PlayStation but no need for any of this apocalyptic nonsense. I’m really excited to see Sony’s next few moves.
@savarunl
Sure what PlayStation exclusive has better review scores this gen than forza?
Well, its not good really. I don't care for Xbox trying to take the whole market to themselves with former muti-platform games, and I don't want a subscription service.
I’m not a fan of the move and I understand the concerns here. It is what it is. Sony should just keep doing their thing, it’s not the end of the world for them.
Microsoft are paying to win, knowing they have zero talent and a lack of creative IP of their own, absolutely appalling behaviour.
Couldn't care less, not surprised ms goes for simpleton online cash cows.
Makes it even clearer that they are just money co.
Not game makers,producers, using their funds to try buy out their spot.
Pushes me further away from ms, more sad that we lost obsidian, but i bet they will be pushed to make fps games.
@themightyant I mean, that comparison includes Activision's contribution to PlayStation's financials, which will presumably disappear.
It also assumes that Microsoft is done, when it's clearly not.
Just wonder if this could lead to Sony seeking a merger with the likes of shudder tencent or embracer group.
@Jay429 well...God of War on PC actually
I rarely play cod (usually play the single player story back then) but yeah, playstation will take a huge blow at least in the west if cod games are exclusive to xbox.
@Jay429
You're really grasping for straws here aren't you? What kind of question is 'what review scores are higher?' That's gonna totally depend on what site you look at and who you ask. Aside from this being totally irrelevant to the original discussion.
if you go by Metacritic user score for example forza 5 sits on 8.6. Sackboy : a bigt adventure sits on a 8.7. To give you an idea of how much review scores mean....
@Rob_230 There were rumours about Apple wanting to buy Sony a few years ago and they already have a great Relationship with Apple Music coming to PS for the first time recently
@get2sammyb well what do you think Sammy? Is this the beginning of Sony becoming irrelevant? Can they do anything except being bought by another Giant?
@lacerz F MS
Cod day one game pass. Rip playstation. I'm joking.
Doesn't effect me in the slightest, I have no interest in Activision or cod. I think Sony buying bluepoint games and housemarque is a far smarter buy and healthier for the world of gaming.
MS are a monster who care nothing for anything but buying their way to the top. I genuinely hope they fail miserably. They can't even make decent games.
If or when Microsoft buys EA, (which may happen as they certainly have the cash on hand)...THEN Sony is in serious trouble. Until then Im just REALLY glad I got both consoles!
I don’t own either a PS5 or a XBX currently, but personally I would still buy a PS5 before an XBX- because PS5 has variety in it’s games in innovation… at least it has in the past. Xbox has just bought more American FPS’s again, all that are competing against each other for mindshare. Admittedly XB has stitched up the dudebro gamers at the moment with COD and Fallout, but those games are always subject to depth in a crowded market. And there is a market that wants BETTER, that Sony has with Spidey and GOW.
If Sony really want to compete, then they need to tie up Japanese producers Capcom, Square Enix, and Sega to some deals, and go back to supporting their own Japanese studios… basically what Nintendo has done. I’d much prefer to have 5-8 interesting games a year to play, than a million brown paint by numbers clones.
@NinjaSixx I tend to agree actually, FIFA has been a bug riddled mess for years, each release being basically a broken reskin at this point. Same with Madden. At end of the day, if you have gamepass on a xbox or pc, you can now enjoy the annual reskin day one for a pittance. That said tho, Id absolutely LOVE another Fight Night...
I know this is getting lost in so many comments but I think we're being too dramatic here!
Sure they have good franchises at Activision/Blizzard and I'm hyped because I'm sure that Microsoft will make better games with those franchises. But let's face it...Blizzard is dead and nothing like it used to be. And COD, year after year is getting more and more predictable...
So Playstation still has the better franchises and they still have the momentum to create the critically acclaimed games!
I think this just means MS will be better and not that Sony will be worse...
@Col_McCafferty
Hi man.
I somehow agree with some of what you said though not completely. Cordially and respectfully we know not all are equal over what we can’t discuss. I’d like to see you stick around and not get pushed out as I saw many in the past.
I think personally all is well with COD and those games I couldn’t care less about. I’m curious to know what’s going on in Sony HQ at the moment.
Interesting times actually
😌
Xbox has always been the shooty shoot-box. Its just official now. Big whoop.
This must be a “phil” good moment for microsoft
On a personal level this doesn't affect me at all. The only Activision game I've bought in the last 5 years is Sekiro, and that's not really an Activision game - I doubt From would have signed with them if they were Microsoft owned. But I do feel the loss of Tony Hawk, a little.
On a non-personal level this is tough news for PlayStation. Most people buy one of the two - myself included - and the casual player is going to play the box that runs CoD, Overwatch, Elder Scrolls, Halo, Diablo, World of Warcraft(!?), Doom, Fallout, etc.
As this article states Sony cannot spend like Microsoft does. Even if they make exceptional games they cannot match the volume of Microsoft's studios, nor the value proposition of Game Pass.
I don't think this is the end of PlayStation, but I do think it's a real turning point for the industry - and not a good one for its overall health.
@LightningLeader Sony cannot afford those companies. Sony's net worth as of 1Q 2022 is $152B. Microsoft just spent half of Sonys net worth like it was a kids allowance. Even more shocking is apparently they are not done. Theres already talk of more acquisitions. This, one year or so after the $7B Bethesda acquisition. MS is REALLY trying to pad their gamepass lineup, and isnt afraid to make it rain. Sony should tie up Capcom and Square Enix before its too late!
@savarunl
Totally agree. $70b was such a huge pile of money even if push pretends it’s nothing. I think it’s just a waste just like they started wasted with Minecraft and kept going that way. It does absolutely nothing for gaming and PlayStation creators focus is much more interesting.
@LightningLeader
Maybe not buy, but there must be some way to get exclusives or partnerships (basically offer a better deal). Currently it looks like MS buying a Japanese Publisher may not be as easy for them as buying the western lot.
Silly title. Apart from COD who cares. And tbh the COD crowd, well they will play COD elsewhere and I don't think the PS world will be worse off without it.
I see it as more of a giggle that MS paid so much money for it.
Move on; nothing to see here.
The biggest hit to sony is the fact the all of PS profit comes from the 3rd party sales. The 30% cut FIFA and COD will be most of PS's UK profit. Those games are that important. Sure PS will still have FIFA but as a lot of players only play both FIFA and COD, MS is going to take a small chunk of those FIFA $$££ away with this deal. I did wonder how MS was going to respond to PS buying up timed exclusives. Very few companies wanted to sell exclusive rights to MS as Sony was the market leader. I guess we have an answer to that now. I think in some ways both this and the bethesda purchase have been warnings to Sony, As long as you pay to keep games off Xbox we'll keep buying studios. This thing is that if this shifts consoles sales in favour of Xbox, it will become much harder for PS to buy exclusive rights as it will limit exposure to a smaller user base. Then with less exclusives Sony looses more ground.
I always thought Sony was playing a dangerous game buying exclusive rights. I think they where hoping to kill off MS while they where down. Once MS committed to next gen they had to make some move. I did not think it would go this far. The question now is, does Sony stop try to pay to keep things off Xbox and hope for a truce or keep going and risk more buyouts?
"and while the economics and end goal of that particular service still remain head-scratching,"
It's pretty clear the end goal of GamePass. A service where you cannot out right buy the games just rent them (future goal). it'll have single player campaigns but it's multiplayer will be a f2p mobile model game much like Halo infinite. Also expect Microsoft to embrace NFTs at some point. Xbox first party games don't make a profit on GamePass because of the 3rd party games, hence the Free 2 Play root. Also Halo 5 was a proof of concept for Microsoft with its microtransactions doing very well, I full expect to see Gears Of War multiplayer to go F2P also.
@Boucho11 "Most people" don't buy Playstation consoles for their exclusives. Core gamers probably do, but the majority of a system's sales come from a casual userbase that are primarily looking forward to a handful of ultra-mainstream releases, and near the top of that list is Call of Duty.
Next generation is really when the difference is going to be felt, because the casual crowd is going to be looking at two nearly identical consoles, but one is going to be offering a lot of the biggest games in the industry, exclusively, for a low monthly fee, and I don't think I need to tell you what 8/10 of those people are going to choose, if they only want one device.
This is such a BS move. I'm not a big fan of Cod but they did it with Bethesda and now Activision, Who's next? How is this remotely good for gamers? The problem MS will have is if they keep doing this and Sony does pull the plug on the PS then Microsoft will be the only big boy in the market. When you have no competitors you get lazy and the buck will only stop with them. Like I said, as a gamer I don't think this is good for gamers at all!
Semi - monopolies everywhere in our economy. Ah well. It's out of my control. Not like i need games to live.
I think there is a danger of hysteria here. Some of the comments on social media are frankly laughable. Calm down people. The likes of CoD are not going to go Xbox exclusive- if they do then they will be timed exclusives anyway but Spencer has always been clear that he sees gaming as being for all regardless of what system you play on. There seems to be a massive knee jerk reaction happening here that MS will just kill PS off and take all of their games for themselves. It is just not going to happen. Sony are not going to stop making consoles like Sega did. Why on Earth would they? PS5 is still selling well despite the shortages and will take off once the shortages end which they will this year. Nintendo are never going to just make games - they will always innovate and bring out new systems or at least build on the Switch model for the next 10 to 20 years and they will always have their IP.
Yes MS have bought some huge studios and this is a huge one - massive - but there needs to be a reality check. The games will still be there and we will still be able to choose which system we game on and enjoy gaming. Gaming wars are old and pointless and need to be left back in the 90’s.
Chill and enjoy gaming getting better and better as it is.
Let's make a worst case scenario: Sony will be dead in 10-15 years, all the servers are down and all consoles die the CMOS death. And I am sitting on a pile of 500 physical PS4 games that cannot be played anymore...
@Valgore which is exactly why MS won’t stop the games like Cod coming to PlayStation. They know competition is good and that has been a consistent massage from Phil Spencer for such a long time. Sony and Nintendo (it doesn’t really affect Nintendo anyway) have nothing to be worried about. This post about the end of PlayStation is just beyond daft.
Get a grip folks.
@__jamiie bang on
If Sony wants to do something similar to this, they need to lockdown GTA6.
Even by Microsoft's standards, I'm surprised they have done this. It's awful for the industry and I can't even imagine Xbox fans being that ecstatic about the move. They might act pleased, but I imagine everyone is thinking '****, this is a bit too much.'.
Buying Bethesda was a bit annoying and I have no interest in Activision games, but this feel like Microsoft are coming for my hobby. It has to be their way and I have no choice, like an annoying rich guy who wants to be your friend and won't leave you alone no matter how much you try to avoid them.
@jarvismp you still believing Spencers "Gaming for all on every Device" and "Sony is not our competitor" BS? They are clearly working on pushing Sony out of the console market and starving them of 3rd Party Software like they already did in the PS3 era lol
Not bothered about CoD - always associated that with meathead Xbots anyway due to the 360 era - but the potential removal of Crash, Spyro and Diablo are some heavy hitting moves.
Personally, I think Sony need to stabilise their position:
1) this means CANCELLING PC ports of the PS exclusives. No PC ports means to play an exclusive game you'd have to buy a Playstation (as per Nintendo's model)
2) reboot some Sony classics; Motorstorm, Wipeout, Jak & Daxter. Games that resonate with PS gamers and will draw people into becoming Playstation owners.
Only other option is to offer Gamepass on Playstation and I'm not sure if Sony would do that?
@kyleforrester87 Uh, no. Because Microsoft is only interested in Game Pass, which means developers will no longer be held responsible for the quality of games. When you don't have worry about game sells, you don't have to worry about who likes your games...
@NoFaceBigFoot that’s one way to look at it - fortunately there are few ways to view the situation. Let’s see how it all plays out!
@Ralizah I just don’t think it’s as big a deal as it’s being made out to be. We’re the first year into a new generation and Sony is dead if you believed half the nonsense being spouted. I agree casuals may move to Xbox, unless Sony has something that can snare them? Who knows. The negativity and scaremongering is just blowing my mind
@IonMagi Nonsense. PlayStation owners have nothing to fear. Get a grip folks.
@KundaliniRising333 i dont think Xbox or PS will be able to buy Rockstar the studio said a while back they want all games they own to be accessible to all gamers
@jarvismp sure Buddy. Cant wait to play Starfield, TES6 and Doom on my Plays....of wait. They are already confirmed to not coming out on PS anymore expect new ESO Expansions. ¯(ツ)/¯
And the same thing will happen to every ActiBlizz Game except Warzone
It's a lot of money to develop these games.
Removed - disrespecting others; user is banned
Loving the extreme reactions here, "the beginning and the end of PlayStation" lol.
Yea CoD is a huge game
Overwatch has been failing lately
WoW is still strong
Majority of these games aint a loss to playstation, I am sure there are other IP's but really it is not important as CoD. CoD is not aint going nowhere, Xbox will need to recoup its profits and making it exclusive to the GamePass is a bad call for business.
Does this put Sony on their toes? For sure, to say it is doom is very laughable.
@Col_McCafferty I get what you mean, a few of them over their still say sony paying for timed exclusives is worse than this.
They don't see the bigger picture when gamepass is flooded with multiplayer games and Microsoft kill single player gaming in the years to come.
Microsoft will become a Cancer to gaming and this is the beginning.
But xbot's don't care, they are more concerned about hurting sony than the actual games they are getting.
@jarvismp I hope so. To be honest the Bethesda buy out hurt more due to the games I like being made exclusive to Xbox now.
@CieloAzure all future big Bethesda Games are already confirmed to not be on PS anymore so why do you think this wont happen to CoD? MS wants nothing more than gaining more and more Subs for GP and the easiest way to make this happen is to remove Games from the Platforms of your competition
@Col_McCafferty I’m typically one of those clowns but this time I’ve been pretty silent. For a reason. I liked Bethesda because of the variety of games it brought and allowed for gp to grow. This one is way more expensive and I’m not sure how to feel.
That being said has anyone considered that Tencent was pursuing Activision? As a company it was declining anyway with a hyper focus on call of duty and little else to appease shareholders (absorbing studios that made Tony Hawk and others into call of duty support roles). Also if someone like Tencent was going after them then this might be the better alternative. I know I’ll get push back for this. But that’s the only way I see this as a net positive - freedom to bring back the variety once offered by Activision and IF there was another purchase threat we aren’t seeing.
I sort of feel for Sony in one way and another I don’t.
I was there when they ruled the portable Walkman world then some how Apple slipped in Ipods and the rest is history, some how Sony missed that boat.
Then back in the day they were the king of the TV market, Samsung and LG come along and now Sony are third. Though they really have their selfs to blame there. Offering less features and charging more, messing around with low latency Dolby Vision and even today VRR etc.
Now we have the gaming division, should Sony have lead the way in a game pass type situation, should they have released a consoles with VRR and ALLM last generation. Not crimes but little things just like the TV market. See the trend from Walkman and TV market above.
Yes there are differences but it is all technology products and other companies around them moving forward or offering more features or maybe better value for money.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yep, unaware that in the long term it will actually hurt them but by then it might be too late.
Even at the height of the PS4's dominance I didn't want Xbox to end, nor Nintendo to give up on gaming. Choice is good and each of the three kind of specialised in it's own thing anyway. Just going out buying third party developers, who have a history of being multi-platform, just in order to remove their games from the competition isn't about creating more choice for gamers but removing it.
They say "just buy an Xbox or PC" but I don't want to nor have I felt that I needed to. PS have me the AAA SP games that I crave plus most major third party titles. I was a huge fan of Skyrim but unless I swallow my pride completely and just join the herd, I won't be able to play the next installment. That sucks.
Uncharted was never a MP title, neither was God of War or TLoU or Ghost of Tsushima etc etc - there might be a case for Spider-Man but blame Disney for that, not forcing Sony to sell it across all possible platforms.
This is what they call a dlck move on MS's part, purely aimed at hurting and humbling Sony.
Makes no difference to myself. Even if I wanted to play COD it would not be with a control pad. In all honesty I do not have the time to play games anywhere near as much as I use to. As long as Sony keep releasing a couple of jaw dropping games each year and there is enough 3rd part devs still around to drop some classics that's all I need.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Having read all the comments till now I don't think folks on here understand how the games business works from a finical point of view. A few points to maybe help.
1, Both Sony and MS make little to no money on hardware. This is not a profit zone. Hardware sales only serve to bring players into the ecosystem.
2. Sony makes almost no money on its exclusives, they spend big to again, attract users to their ecosystem.
3. Sony's exclusive deals tend to be on the basis of Sony will charge no platform fees / cut of sales for the exclusive window and will spend X amount on marketing. Exclusives cost Sony. They do not make a profit.
4. All of Sony profit is from third party sales. Over 60% of that profit came from 3 titles in the PS4 generation. COD, EA Sport, GTA-V.
Sony just lost 25% + of PS profitable business. If you buy a PS to just play the exclusives Sony hates you, you are not a profitable consumer. Sony loves the COD bros, Sony Loves the FIFA junkies. Sony Loves the shark cards. All the rest is to get those player to pick PlayStation as their platform.
This is how the Console Business has worked since at least the PS3
Eh best solution would be to snag a PC if this news is at issue, I mean if bitcoin miners ever stop hoarding GPU's.
Everybody seems to be looking at this through the lens of console exclusivity. While that's certainly a concern over the next few years, my guess is that MS is acquiring Activision Blizzard as a bulwark against Chinese companies coming to dominate what MS sees as the future of video games: the cloud. They're aiming for a console-less future.
@get2sammyb Agreed Sony may lose some of the Acti-Bliz money. Primarily annual COD presumably. I think it's unlikely to lose Warzone, but who knows. But that's not going to kill Sony off is it? Not even close.
Also agreed MS aren't finished my biggest concern as @ShogunRok said is what is next for them?
But I don't see the apocalyptic doom and gloom. Other than COD what have Acti-Bliz ACTUALLY released in the last 5 years. THPS 1+2, Crash 4, Crash, Crash Racing and Spyro remasters & Destiny 2 (which they no longer have).
Many of the other IP are PC e.g. Starcraft, Diablo. While without doubt a blow I just don't think any of this is close to a mortal wound.
I think a interesting part of this story that is NOT discussed, is that the main reason MS bought activision at this moment is precisely BECAUSE of the accusations at Blizzard/Acti and the lukewarm reception of CoD vanguard. These scenarios brought stock prices down nearly 5% for acti, which made the MS purchase more about timing than anything. They got another large stable of IPs and got them at a 5% discount. Still, not the end of the world by any means, and Sony still has its own killer studios and its own gamepass of sorts on the way. That said come on Sony, wheres that resistance/Killzone reboot? Gonna need it now that CoD is gone...
@TooBarFoo That's a lot of big talk with no sources.
1. Agreed on hardware.
2. "Sony makes almost no money on its exclusives." Proof? 20 millions God of war or Spiderman sales didn't make a profit?
3. "Exclusives cost Sony." True. "They do not make a profit." Proof?
4. "All of Sony profit is from third party sales. Over 60% of that profit came from 3 titles in the PS4 generation. COD, EA Sport, GTA-V." Again What? I read their financial reports every year and they do not break it down like this. Either you have a source for this or it is all pulled out of your ass.
Willing to give benefit of doubt but it sounds far fetched.
The saddest part is that they could have used a fraction of that money to make an awesome exclusive game that elevated gaming to new heights. Instead they bought someone else's just to keep making the same game over and over again... This is how sony can win in my eyes, creating original titles that takes gaming to the next level. That is where the investments should be going and of course new studios with solid potential.
I'm not happy about this at all. I don't like rich companies getting richer. It seems like MS just wants to be the only game in town or have the biggest piece of the pie.
There's really nothing we can do to stop it, and MS will likely keep buying unless the feds stop it somehow. In the end I just hope we can still play Sony's excellent first party titles on a console, which would likely be an Xbox.
It's a remarkable day from the arrogant highs of the PS4 era to load Push Square and read Sammy penning an article basically pronouncing the end of PlayStation as we know it.
This is the day I've been waiting for.
Playstation was amazing in the PS1 era, fighting hard, and spending all they could to produce the best gaming they could to take on rival Nintendo after they mutually screwed each other without consent. They were amazing in the PS2 era continuing that. But as they go too big, too powerful, they fell into the hubris that was the PS3. But they quickly took the fall for that, regrouped, and the PS3 was a fantastic system for Sony and Japanese games, while MS took the lead on the mainstream. They had a player-first focus at the early PS4 launch, but during the PS4, being king of the hill has put them right back in that hubristic PS3 launch mindset. And in that hubris they bet the farm on the large "casuals" market, believing themselves to be unassailable. They've built their own brands on ego stroking over-budget monoliths of their hubris and abandoned the creativity and vibrance in that vast AA space they thrived in, along with Nintendo, that put them on the map to begin with. They abused and shuttered some of their most experimental and varied studios in Japan Studio and elsewhere. They abandoned their Japanese roots in chasing the big mass market casual players, and went all in on that market. And now Microsoft shows up and just buys that market out from under them, turning them back to square one (or is it triangle one?)
They need to think about their leadership, and Jim Ryan's leadership is the wrong direction during what is going to have to be a transformative chapter for them. But It's my hope that the result we get is a new, more creative, more player-focused Playstation than the Playstation we've had for years that was eager to flip off the dedicated gamers in favor of that wide casual market. That market is vanishing under them. If it's not MS that buys up EA or GTA it'll be Tencent or Apple or Google or Amazon. All companies with much deeper wallets than Sony.
Maybe Sony can throw their hat back in the ring in support of a digital E3 and digital conference and deign to sully themselves among the sweaty nerd peasants again, even if only virtually. After floating among the clouds, too good for such things for years, maybe this year it's time to hit hard and show they're committed to playing this out in the trenches - for the players.
I'm still an Xbox fan. So long as they treat me well as a customer, so long as they keep adding value to my purchases and ensuring a solid and smooth experience, I'll still be there with them, even if they become the mainstream again. But maybe we can finally move away from the "AAAA Twins" consoles and PS can find their identity again, without the crutch of mass casual guaranteed cash flow.
GamePass makes, at most, probably 3 billion a year. It has 25 million subscribers, most of which don't pay full price. How in the world is Microsoft going to recoup 70 billion dollars? These types of questions don't seem to be important to the economic wizards on fan sites such as this one.
"it’s the manufacturer slumped against the ropes, blood dripping from its mouth, while it desperately gasps for air."
This website could not be more melodramatic. PlayStation makes quite a lot of money independent of Activision, though it's true Activision brings in a lot. Something like 20 million people bought the last God of War. PlayStation makes 30% of GTAV money. They're doing quite well.
But how will Microsoft realistically make money from a $70,000,000,000 purchase when they give away all their games? Do some math and get back to us, Sammy.
@IonMagi
"wasting tons of money on...Sony Pictures."
They just released one of the most profitable movies of all time. I don't know where you get your info but your narrative doesn't seem to fit reality.
I hope I can enjoy Hearthstone on MacOS/Android and Overwatch 2 on PS5. But if not, it's honestly not a big deal... There is more than enough amazing content coming out to keep me happy. Elden Ring next month. Tons of content across PS5, Android, Meta Quest, PSVR2, Mac Desktop, Nintendo...
@KippDynamite Wow, one Movie making Money (which they also have to share with Disney) after the Movie Division suffered heavy losses for 2 years due to Covid. Wish they would have taking this stance when it comes to all their Game Studios they closed over the years
I don't think that there is a "who's next". Microsoft tries to reel in people with gamepass (which honestly is big bang for your buck) and huge names like CoD and Skyrim. Seems likey they are mainly going for the NA market. They just can't do that with sega. Sorry they have the Joker, now they have to play their cards right. There is a potential they could screw up. Also let's wait and see if people are willing to shell out more money for gamepass in the future. Prices will go up. In the end I'd rather migrate to pc than Xbox. Every major Xbox game is also on pc
@KippDynamite very true. So much for "who's next"
@NEStalgia Well said. Lots of people swirling around the drain here today over an announcement with no concrete details.
Playstation has way too much going for it without Activision to just disappear. But you're right that a reckoning like this may be what gets them refocused on their roots.
Still surprised Ubisoft hasn’t been bought by Microsoft yet, maybe that’s next month 🙄
@NEStalgia wo wont get of what you are talking about since Sony will either be bought up by Apple, Amazon whatever or simply go bancrupt for real this time
@KippDynamite
its not about how much money they are making now, they own these IPs now, and with the metaverse narrative that is massive.
and also, think about it, does it really make sense to keep paying $80 for games when you can just get game pass?
COD takes up 2 slots in the PS5 most played games,For all those playstation gamers that love COD ( and there is a ***** load of PS players that love COD ) does it make sense to stick with a console that charges you $80 per game, or get COD + Halo+Forza+Starfield+skyrim+Wolfenstein+ Thousand other games for 7 bucks a month?
Easy choice really
@Jay429 thousand? Gamepass has 400+ Games lol
Is this really that 'bad', Warzone will continue and no doubt the Multiplayer will go Free to play, maybe integrated into Warzone.
It just means that 'new' games, whether new IP's or new games from existing IP's, will be Exclusive to Game Pass. They may release a new 'CoD' SP on Game Pass, but maybe not...
They will support active communities and won't want to lose their PS5 MP gamers so F2P and Warzone will be CoD's presence on PS5.
To play R&C, Wolverine or any of the big Sony 1st party games that aren't a legacy of delays and cross platform development, on Day 1, you MUST buy a Sony Playstation 5.
To play Halo, Forza, Starfield, Avowed, or any of the other 1st Party studio's (of which ALL Activision/Blizzard studios will become) Games will ALL be on Game Pass on Day1 - That's on EVERY device that Game Pass exists - PC, Tablet/Mobile and, as the only MS and currently only Game Pass compatible console, the Xbox.
After recent scandals they were at discounted price. So it's logical someone stepped in. Besides if it wasn't Microsoft it would have been Tenscent. However, the latter would still have kept games multiplatform. I don't really care about any of the franchise's they acquired with this purchase. Have zero interest in those games, so it's not a Biggie for me. I would go absolutely mad if they eventually bought Take Two, but to buy take two we would speak probably close to a trillion dollars.
@KippDynamite "How in the world is Microsoft going to recoup 70 billion dollars?"
Why should you or any other costumer care about that? Maybe if I was a Microsoft accountant or a higher up I would care but why should the regular person care how they will make money?
For a company worth almost 2.5 trillion that 70 billion will barely be felt and the gp cost is also not something Microsoft execs are losing sleep over. You always seem to be worry about Microsoft's financials which is like worrying about Apple's or Disney's.
People trying to downplay this are just delusional. It's funny how Sony gets so much slack for temporary exclusive deals yet people try to find the positives in the biggest conglomerate in the world using money from outside the gaming industry to brute force control it. MS could have created dozens of studios with that money but they take the lazy route just buying out the competition. No matter how you look at it this is horrible for gaming. I can't even comprehend how stupid you have to be to try and defend one company spending billions to gatekeep you from the games you've been playing for years.
@Juanalf
Because at some point the behemoth that is Microsoft will go "let's just ditch that gaming wing of the company that hasn't made a profit in over 20 years."
I don't lose sleep over this. I have a job, business, family, etc. But I'm bored on my phone at the moment.
Think of how many excellent games could have been made for 70 billion dollerydoos!
Ugh, looks like this might be my last console generation. There's no benefit post MS buying up everyone, inevitably there will be people complaining about a lack of competition and a reduction in innovation but by then it'll be too late.
On the other hand spending $70bn this way is a sad indictment on the state of everything right now. Sigh.
Will this be the longest comment section of push square? lol
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@mucc Dude thats not going to happen, no company would cut off 30% of their market after paying $70B.
@lindos Except most people who buy Playstation buy it so they can play Call of duty and GTA.
@TooBarFoo
Cool. But even if all you said is accurate which I doubt most of us aren’t here for console business haha
Sony s problem to get their balls rolling which they will.
It could turn out to be good for console ps gamers actually if that prompts Sony the focus even more on console gaming.
Jesus, Microsoft is essentially financing the destruction of the gaming industry. Make no mistake, Game Pass will have the same effect on games as Netflix has had on movies. And we'll look back at the generations up to now as the good old days.
All I can do at this point is to boycott anything MS, and to support Sony as much as I can.
I can’t see Sony allowing Gamepass on PlayStation so the likely future is Sony leaving the hardware game at the end of this gen and becoming another Sega. PlayStation may become a niche console by the end of the decade
@lacerz there's something to be said about never humiliating your opponent even when they are about to lose. Always give them an honorable exit. Sony thought they were so smart with that "how to share games on ps4" stint back at e3 2013. They totally humiliated their opponent. And now, the old boy is back and has a hammer in his hands. This is going to hurt Sony. I am not glad at all. I have all systems don't care this way or the other but Sony brought it onto themselves. No one dumps this kind of money with no revenge in mind.
@Col_McCafferty i doubt they would go the way of sega. even with barely games so far ps5's have been flying out of the stores. they'll be just fine.
@Art_Vandelay what effect has Netflix had on movie industry? I think your analogy is lacking because what netflix did is actually finance small and independent movies that could not find any support in traditional movie business watters any longer. Netflix has been great for film makers.
Lets not get lost in Western PR and Propaganda. Lets lay it bare, through gaming Sony rake in £25B and have around 120M active PS users, Microsoft $11B and also over 100M gaming users. Extremely unlikely these games will not be accessed on PS as its will be at least 30% of market. This is about the metaverse which is a gamble that US Companies are attempting to get sheep to flock into (yes you all are the sheep), it will become the biggest Spyware known to man. Now I have 445 games on my PS Account why on earth would I leave PlayStation because of this acquisition? To be honest I actually detest COD.
Game studios pop up all the time.
Microsoft is in the process of being banished in China.
To many people writing on this without any knowledge of what they are actually talking about or what the deal is all about. Its NOTHING to do with Xbox vs PlayStation.
@Driv80
I'm sorry, but this is an incredibly short sighted perspective.
Microsoft is obviously putting all their might into destroying Sony, and they won't stop until they do. And I don't know if you noticed, but they surely can. Who says MS will stop at Activision? Who's next? Take Two?
This is all genuinely concerning to anyone who enjoys the PlayStation platform and its games.
some of these comments , does any one realistically think sony would leave the console market? they sold 117 million ps4's , they keep selling out the ps5's every time they are in stock, and they have plenty of heavy hitters coming out software wise. they aren't going any where any time soon.
@Art_Vandelay Eh! Netflix mostly show movies that nobody else will buy, they are 90% straight to DVD movies. People with NetFlix accounts seem to be brainwashed into mediocre content. Now if you mentioned Disney buying over studios it would make more sense.
@Art_Vandelay 100% nonsense this nonsense is just as bad as they movies that tell us that everything evolves around the US and there is no other place on earth.
The truth is there are millions of people that do not like or trust US Tech companies especially Microsoft the biggest Spyware producers on the planet
@twitchtvpat
Lol they think Sony are noobs in business and didn’t see it coming.
@TheDudeElDuderino
Well, I beg to disagree. Contemporary movies suck when compared to the 90's and 2000's. Netflix is quantity over quality because a constant influx of content is essential to keep their subscribers base. And we can kinda see the same trend emerging within the games industry.
I personally love Sony's blockbusters and I can see a world where they are as rare as great movies made for the theaters are today.
Is there no authority in the US that would investigate this deal for competition reasons? In the UK this deal would be very unlikely to happen because the Competition and Markets Authority would understand it's bad for consumers and would not allow it to happen.
I like the single player experiences as much as the next PlayStation user, but Sony doesn't have the luxury anymore of observing from a higher ground games that have as the core of its business model its popularity and user base.
Sony have all the tools it need and a whole lot of options to keep being a major player in the gaming and entertainment business. If it doesn't it will be because of lack of vision and feeling from those in leadership positions.
The commentary section from this article looks like a bunch of people running around and screaming as the ship is sinking. I hope Sony have the minimum level of expertise in business to not make decisions based on who screams the loudest — a rare thing nowadays.
@Mandrax its only a game studio there ae literally thousands of these studios. New ones appearing all the time with new game ideas. The way people are talking like we are limited to a few studios producing all game content.
@pierco
But that's exactly my point. Netflix is one of the biggest movie producers in the world right now and their output is mediocre with very few exceptions. I see the same happening with Microsoft and Game Pass. And who knows if there will be a place left in the market for Sony and their blockbuster titles.
I still wouldn’t want an Xbox even if they gave it away for free. I’ve had a great life without any Microsoft products and I will continue till I die.
@JJ2 sony's bread and butter is their first party , and they have all these new things coming , not to mention , not to mention the vr stuff they have planned.

@Art_Vandelay Dude Sony are the biggest gaming company in the planet grossing more than double Microsoft. This $70B deal puts Microsoft 3rd. Really unsure as to why anyone thinks Sony is just going to disappear from the market hahaha that is just crazy talk. As I have mentioned previously there are thousands of studios and new ones appearing all the time. There are constantly new games and ideas developed. Now lets get down to the nitty gritty Sony bringing out the PS5 VR soon which looks to be an awesome piece of kit, Sony working on their own version of GamePass. Neither Xbox X or PS5 have an abundance of new games. Most games will always be available on multiple platforms.
Finally Microsoft making a massive gamble here on the metaverse and trying to shorten the gap with no idea of what the future will bring.
Sony a very coy company that keep their cards close to the chest and constantly keep their head on top regardless of the propaganda from the west.
what CoD 😂 really don't care, it would be like losing FIFA, a bit of a blow but most of those players stick to CoD and FIFA year in year out and play nothing else
@RudeAnimat0r good point. But why the casual player can't buy anymore the "box" where he can play the latest God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, GT, Astro, and other exclusives? Sure not all casual players play only first person shooters...
I think all we can do now is speculate. But sure it isn't the end of Playstation. Far from it.
On the Gamepass topic. Sure MS is at a loss right now with the service to attract as much players as it can. But who will guarantee it will not rise its price once it catches certain amount of regular monthly subs? I don't know...
Microsoft can buy as many studios as they want - but if they run them into the ground, then it will be a waste of money. I see a possibility that in 2032, people look back at Bethesda and Activision Blizzard the same way we look back at Atari - with fond memories and a lot of nostalgia (heck Activision made games for the Atari 2600, back in the day) of a dead company.
Will that happen? Don't know. But neither does anybody else. Shake up the company to get rid of the sexual harrassers, change the ownership, shuffle enough things around...and maybe it looks nothing like itself when you're done. Maybe the next CoD is so bad everybody abandons the franchise. It could happen - we all know it can. You're only as good as your last game. So, can Microsoft keep these studios healthy and productive over the long term, especially when they essentially give away their games on Game Pass? Maybe. We'll see.
Ok next step Microsoft buys Sony for 150 million $ and bring gamepass to Playstation box for just 30$/month
Seriously now. yes i think game pass and having all games day one for a basic subscription is much better for gamers than paying 80$ for GT7. But i don't think Sony can afford it. Sony don't have Microsoft "muscle"
@pierco
I never said that Sony is going to disappear. My point is that this acquisition together with Bethesda's and god knows what else is an industry shifting event that will have inevitable repercussions in the years and decades to come. And I'm worried that this change points to a future where subscription services will be the norm. Which is a future that I don't see with very good eyes.
You said yourself, Spartacus is right around the corner. Which means Sony has given up on that front. They have reiterated time and again that the Game Pass model does not get along well with their current business practices. So either Game Pass or the current model will fail in the long run because Microsoft is clearly going all in.
@NEStalgia I really enjoyed reading this. Top tier comment here.
Sammy its like your almost bashing Sony you wrote an article that is full of negativity against Sony this is Pushsquare not Purexbox you should at least boost the confidence of the PlayStation community.
Just buy an Xbox too, they're pretty cheap if you go the digital only route and Gamepass means you get pretty much all first party stuff day of release for the price of a Netflix Sub.
I play on all three systems so none of this bothers me too much.
@MisterXpoSay I'm not bashing Sony, I'm just sharing my thoughts. Sony isn't poor, but I just don't really see how they maintain their position as market leader against investment on this scale.
Maybe I'm wrong and they'll come up with a game or product that completely captures the global imagination. And if/when they do, I'll write about that, too!
@Art_Vandelay You basically did "And who knows if there will be a place left in the market for Sony and their blockbuster titles." If there is no place then there is no PS which you are implying.
What are you talking about Spartacus is right around the corner.? And Sony has given up on what?
Finally Sony are brining out a new sub which will have 3 tiers so basically what we have just now and a new one. Finally subs will never be the only way as people want to own items. I no longer purchase digital media and games as I will never ever own them and just have a lease of them whilst I have an active account. Hence more people buying Disc PS5s than Digital ones. This is the same reason as to why LPs made a revival as people want to have physical items they can keep, share, swap or sell.
@Driv80 Read the article again: I literally say in the first paragraph it's not the end of PlayStation. What I said is that it may (in my opinion) be the beginning of the end for PlayStation as a market leader.
Maybe I'll be completely wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. That's just my immediate reaction to the news (and it hasn't changed over the past six or so hours).
@get2sammyb well, Gamepass has not "completely captures the global imagination", nor ActiBlizz.... let's see how all of this unfolds...
@get2sammyb okay I’m not angry with you it’s just my opinion/reaction
@get2sammyb maybe so but pretty sure Sony not worried about that as long as they are making the same huge profits. The media and dumb fanboys of each platform seem to be at war over who is number one and this mythical console wars.
It kind of bugs me when people hop on here and say, "Oh well. I didn't play CoD anyway." You don't understand. This could honestly be the beginning of the end of the console wars, and Microsoft is looking to become the final winner. Sony really may become solely a software developer and only release their games on PC. There's no competition when one company owns them all. This sucks so much. I wouldn't be surprised if PS5 was the last PlayStation-made console.
I hope Socom becomes a thing again and Sony answers all these future gaps like say a open world RPG from ND to combat Elder Scrolls. I hope this makes Playstation division better and all that jazz...But man!! SCREW MS using Windows riches to bulldoze another industry. Every way you want to look at this, this does not FEEL right! Please gaming media, I understand U.S is gaming's home in journalism but this stinks!! If MS doesn't have Minecraft like deals in front of all these IP's and just offer some exclusive window this is simply taking away experiences from millions. This was not a company struggling, they needed management shakeup not funding. This is MS failing with their own WWS and buying relevance. It should not be celebrated and it should not be applauded.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Vorlon why what's wrong with Microsoft Spytools lol
I think the big thing is Sony needs to react and unfortunately the only thing they can do is buy up a publisher of their own. People act like Sony doesn't have the money, you have no idea of what you're talking about. They make billions of pure profit every year and if Take Two can spend $12 billion on a mobile company and Sony makes way more money than Take Two, then they have plenty of cash to throw around. If I had my choice I'd say buy Take Two and make GTA exclusive again. That would be a major blow even beyond CoD level. But honestly I'd love to have them purchase Konami since everyone would win. Lure Kojima back to the franchise he made legendary, give him his try at Silent Hill, remake Suikoden 2 and find a developer to continue the franchise and make it a household name, I could go on and on.
@lacerz
MS net worth is 2.2 trillion.
Sony is 143 billion.
Good try though.....
The only thing that Sony needs to do, it's start listening their users.
If they could simply listen maybe the things could turn better for them and actually give them a chance.
I actually own Xbox S/X PS4 and PC, I don't care regarding platforms.
@mucc Sony do not need to react though they are still number 1 even with this Microsoft deal but its not about who's number 1 its about profit margins.
Activision Blizzard currently make around $2B net profit and bought for $70B, now if COD mostly on Xbox Gamepass are they going to make the same profits there ?? who knows. now if they cut off PS then they lose 30% of that market. If profits from AB stay the same it would take over 30 years to break even.
The point of this deal is for the metaverse which believe it or not Sony secretly working on and which I believe their new sub service will enhance. Sony have their own VR which also evolves around the metaverse. They are already well ahead in the gaming world of profits and pretty sure when the new tech come out Sony will elaborate more on the metaverse.
Microsoft needed to act before this and shown their card pretty sure they are more concerned and know more about Sony's plans than we know.
@gesora guess you missed the memo. Maybe read last months PS news
As long as PS5 got Persona and Final Fantasy, Spiderman and KOTOR that's where my loyalty lies. Maybe its time Nintendo and Sony to finally join forces again against common enemy
@pierco if they cut off PS then they lose more than 50% of COD market.
@IonMagi It was Nintendo who backed out of the CD drive for the SNES that led to the Playstation, not the other way around. Sony then took the work Nintendo no longer had interest in and made the PS1. So it wouldn't make sense to say Nintendo hate Sony for that since it was Nintendo who backed out of it. To this day Nintendo still haven't made a console that uses normal CDs, DVDs or blurays.
Side note, but one thing they did get annoyed with was with Squaresoft taking FF to Sony. And that's ironically connected to the above because it was down to the N64 using carts - it would have taken about 30 carts to fit FFVII on, costing £1500 for the customer if the price per cart was the same as a normal game - and that's more like £2800 in modern money.
@pierco
Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. When I said there could be no place left for Sony and their blockbuster titles, I actually meant the blockbuster titles. In other words, I'm worried if there will be a place for Sony's current business model (which I very much enjoy).
If they are forced to shift to a subscription based paradigm (hence giving up on the current model), things will change for the worse when it comes to first party games. The economics are totally different.
What you describe as a "revival" of LPs is as much of a niche as cartridge games are today. It's a nice nostalgic hobby, but it's a minuscule market that nor Sony not Microsoft are interested in.
@dimi dont think its 50% as COD has tons of PC players as well as Xbox
Would be nothing but positive if Sony now decide to release another killzone and resistance
Anyone denying this isn’t that bad is lying to yourself. The console wars were pretty much dead but Microsoft has clearly fueled the fire again just goes to show consumers didn’t really start it, it was the companies. Not that I support buying mega publishers but part of me wants Sony to respond buy take two, Ubisoft, EA, square Enix, capcom or even Bandai Namco. Just do something Sony…..
@UltimateOtaku91
But, but...
This was on the official Xbox Twitter account.
"Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard to bring the joy and community of gaming to everyone, across every device."
Surely they have Playstation gamers at heart too.
🙄
Oh wait, except for Sony devices. I didn't fall for that line of BS when they said it about Bethesda, an acquisition I actually cared about.
My brother and I have been discussing the decline of this hobby for quite a while now. Long before even the Bethesda acquisition.
The industry is just losing its appeal.
MTX galore
Multiple launch editions for games with mostly useless content.
Live Service money grabbing tactics
Loot Boxes
Always Online Requirement
NFT's 🤮
Now Microsoft trying not to outdo the competition, but effectively kill it off.
None of this is good for the industry. Plus, AAA games have become stale and redundant.
It's becoming more and more likely I'll just find a new hobby.
On BBC news they are reporting the deal won't be finalised until some point in 2023, looks like overwatch 2 and diablo 4 are certain to still come to playstation
@FatedGuardian Its about the metaverse and COD will still be on PS. $70B for a $2B a year company. People seem to be having a knee jerking reaction without actually knowing anything about Sony's metaverse plans which will be released with the new VR
@UltimateOtaku91 This was never in doubt as those deals were set up ages ago.
Microsoft has already been playing coy with former multiplatform from Bethesda. We know starfield isn’t coming to ps5, most likely not elder scrolls 6 either, now with Activision-blizzard. Overwatch 2? Nope, Diablo 4? ain’t happening, crash? Not anymore even call of duty? Yes probably even that. Microsoft will keep current games on the PS4, PS5 and honor any pre existing contracts but that’s about it. They made the Bethesda and Activision sale to sell their brand not Sony’s.
@FatedGuardian the deal won't be done until some point in 2023, and existing deals will be honoured, so it's very likely overwatch 2 amd diablo 4 will still come to playstation
I suspect in the end Microsoft will just become a mega giant publisher and abandon their console manufacturing to focus on otter platforms, such as Nintendo and Sony. This is the only way they will make more profit.
@UltimateOtaku91 its also subject for a regulatory approval in the US according to one of CNN reporter.i hope it will not get the approval because it is not good for the consumers.
@Kang81 I don't blame you, gaming is getting worse and worse, look at Nintendo with charging full price for ports, and subscription based services where you need Internet and you don't own the games yourself. Now with xbox buying everyone to ruin any competition and NFT's becoming the next monetisation, and even gamepass will most primarily be multiplayer based games, single player gaming is being killed off slowly. Its a future that I don't want to be a part of and this could be my last gen with big AAA gaming and just stick with nintendo gaming, anime and manga
I don't post here often, but I wanted to share my thoughts.
First of all, relax. Sony isn't going 3rd party. That's ridiculous. They might, however, be in 3rd place behind Nintendo and Xbox, and that's a reality you'll likely need to come to terms with. Switch just passed 100m units sold in 4.75 years, fastest in history barring the DS. They've dominated Japan. And Xbox will dominate America with Bethesda, Activision-Blizzard, Obsidian, and their own internal IP.
Nobody can be market leader forever. These things ebb and flow. Nintendo was in the dumps in 6th gen, then won 7th gen, back in the dumps 8th gen, and now they're about to smash the record PS2/DS holds for most units sold in a generation. Ebb and flow. Its not the end of the world. All that really gets hurt is your ego.
As for the buyout, it's not gonna get struck down. They're not even remotely close to a monopoly. Even now, they're still 3rd largest publisher behind Tencent and Sony. In fact, this is a good thing. Sony diehards won't see it that way because they're used to winning and this changes the game. But MS has never been truly competitive with Sony. They've struggled every generation (barring 360). This simply levels the playing field.
And for the record, there's nothing wrong with buying a publisher. If company A wants to buy, and company B wants to sell, and they come to a voluntary arrangement, that's fair game. Certainly more fair than ****blocking as many multiplatform titles as possible which is the main PS tactic. If you own it, it's only fair to ask I use your platform. But if you don't own it you have no right to deprive me. I kickstarted Little Devil Inside for Nintendo, but Sony comes along and pays them to only release on PS5 as timed exclusive. Out the gate with PS5, they already bribed 2 Bethesda games, Final Fantasy XVII Remake, Final Fantasy XVI, Forspoken, Little Devil Inside- anything they could get their meathooks into. That chicken's simply coming home to roost. Doesn't feel so good when you're on the receiving end, I know.
At the end of the day though, it's just video games. I just bought a Series X yesterday, despite not being an Xbox guy (I'm mainly Switch and Steam, though I do own a PS5) for Gamepass, as it's too good to ignore at this point. I don't plan to buy any games there- I need gyro aiming so all my purchases are Steam and Switch, but it'll be great to demo games before buying.
Anyways, be ready for one last acquisition. I suspect a Japanese studio since they're sorely lacking in that respect (maybe the Sega rumors have merit?). Xbox is finally transforming their platform into a must-have console, and I'm there for it. Too long have they been the last place stragglers each gen. We need good competition. And since they guarantee day and date releases on Steam, this benefits me greatly. Maybe now Call of Duty will come back to Steam instead of requiring that stupid Battle.net launcher.
But ya. PS will survive. The end this is not. Probably the end of market dominance, but not the end.
@UltimateOtaku91 well o don’t care so much for overwatch but we can’t be sure that Diablo IV will get released at 2023 or they won’t hold its release.
@ShogunRok Who’s next? Probably a spear and a jackhammer to Sega
@IonMagi They got 30 billion dollars in cash on hand plus they are a bank in Japan, so there ability to raise money is huge. They could easily afford to buy many third party studios like Sega, Capcom, Square Inc are all in there price range.
@pierco Given repeated rumours of Sony doing something with Home, I agree Sony will enter in the Metaverse wars, an if they get people like Media Molecule to create the creative tools it could be successful.
@UltimateOtaku91
Yeah, I've embraced Indie gaming like never before. Everything is just starting to suck these days.
@Phantomlord0413
A quick lesson in finance:
Net worth is simply a company's assets minus its liabilities.
Microsoft's net worth currently sits at $456 billion.
Market value (also known as OMV, or "open market valuation") is the price an asset would fetch in the marketplace, or the value that the investment community gives to a particular equity or business.
Microsoft's market value is $2.42 trillion.
There is a difference. Good try though.....
I mean... sure. It must be for CoD players.
Sony might invest in a better 1st party FPS or draw deals with EA for Battlefield.
But, tbh i don't care about CoD myself. Activision just makes crap.
Actually, MS overpaid bigtime. That is a hefty price for a developer that doesn't make great games. They better hope CoD remains relevant.
Also, everyone upset... #boycottgamepass. It's the only way to save the industry.
Breaking News: Sony stock fell almost 10% while Nintendo,Capcom,Square Enix,Konami are Up isn’t it strange why is Sony the only one is affected.
@Jay429 Miles Morales is better than Forza or Halo and Im currently 2 weeks into Forza and on the fifth mission of halo (I think been running the open world stuff mostly and rescuing marines). Miles Morales blew my mind, the story, animations and skyline are ridiculously good quality. Forza is great but the human animations are poor and it becomes very samey after a while, best open world racer? I would say so, the amount of cars is frightening, it's looks fabulous and the gameplay wicked but it not miles Morales which is a top top game. I would give Forza a 9 and MM a 9.5.
Halo infinite is overrated, as a fan of the original Xbox and 360 series up to Reach Halo I have no idea why the internet is buzzing off it. The gameplay is tight and the grapple is boss. But where as you had an overarching war in the passed games and a story progression you could believe in. Now you have 1 marine guarding a fob whilst groups of banished wander around which could easily overpower him but never do. It's a solid game but the story, open world and characters are contrived. Compared to MM and his story, open world and relationships. It's not a fair comparison as Halo Loses on all 3 counts and easily. Halo sits at a 6.5 so far but Im open minded and have a long way to go, hopefully the biomes start opening up as fed up of looking at the same backdrops tbh.
Aside from buying Bethesda, which absolutely sucks, nothing that XBOX has done or is doing matters to me whatsoever. These aren't games and companies that I've ever been interested in, so its no loss to me. And if that means PS is a smaller platform that makes MORE games that I do want to play, all the better.
Ahhh Same old Microsoft - can’t create good things so steal or buy them (Copied Apple OS back in the day), And the irony - didn’t Microsoft cry about Sony not allowing games to have Cross-Platform play. Recent Past Microsoft “Sony let your players play with Our players”…Today/Future Microsoft “Oh, yeah Sony players - NO! NO game for you unless you use our stuff” - I’ve been Apple/Sony - Never NEVER will I bend the knee to evil Microsoft
@xyopic 100% Agree. And i’m an old school player since Pitfall on the Atari 2600! Microsoft didn’t spend all that money to not be exclusive. Bye. Only hope is US blocks it as antitrust, but I won’t hold my breath
@JaxonH We shall see…. All those PS4 & PS5 owners might surprise you with Brand Loyalty. I know i’ll never buy Microsoft Console for the same reason I only owned Commodore, Amiga, & Apple computers - I reward innovation
This is not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be except that Microsoft just blew an unimaginable amount of money on this. How many first person shooter games are there out there? A lot. Call of Duty, whatever I haven’t played that since it first came out. World of Warcraft, really people still play that? My favorite games on my PS5 are all from smaller developers and I sure hope Microsoft doesn’t buy them lol! One thing to understand is Microsoft is purchasing the rights to the studios current games and future games but they don’t own the developers, the developers can quit start their own studios or go to work for someone else.
xbox is the spoiled brat of the gaming industry. the rich kid that gets everything he wants only because his father has more money than he knows what to do with. microsoft is clearly desperate to take the easy way out since it doesn't know how to compete with its rivals and has not learned a thing over the past 20 years. eh, it can have activision and blizzard. good riddance. now it needs to live with a PR nightmare while it torches those studios to the ground and rebuilds anew. you can bet that a lot of developers will be fired or leave amongst all the commotion during this process. that is what it will take to cleanse the kotick infused toxicity that has been growing over the years. microsoft essentially purchased one very successful franchise in this deal: call of duty. diablo with its very confused development cycle and CCP censorship will be a grave disappointment. WOW is all but dead now and you just know blizzard will never capture lightning in a bottle twice. what's left? overwatch? overwatch 2 you say? people still care about that franchise? the only IPs i will miss are crash and spyro but they had their time in the sun.
@thefourfoldroot The best take, honestly. The console war rubbish is juvenile, but even if we entertain it, what do we have to gain as consumers from the success of these companies? What does a company being worth 400 billion mean to us individually? None of us are shareholders, lmao.
So really, their bottom line means nothing as long as they have enough money to innovate and continue releasing good games, which they absolutely do. The number of incredible Song exclusives released over the past several years has been staggering, and as a consumer, those new, strong, creative IPs are what matter to me. Microsoft can come in and throw their bulk around, but that's because they have to, they've always been the weaker option in terms of game choice. They have to spend money buying up IPs that other companies have spent time making successful, in order to compete.
This move might court casuals, and it may well make them the market leader, but as a more invested gaming consumer who doesn't benefit in any way from a company's valuation, the home of quality games is still PlayStation.
@knowles2 they dont tho. For the next years they have only 18 Billion $ in Cash for stuff like aquisitions for the whole company, and most of it will go into Sony Music and Pictures as always lol. Their Stock Price also tanked like crazy since yesterday, they have already lost Millions and the Deal issnt even final yet
@Nightmaremensis yo don’t spend $65 BILLION dollars to keep everything the same. CoD will absolutely be exclusive to Microsoft’s ecosystem, that’s the whole point. But maybe in very near future you won’t need a Microsoft console to play it. Cloud gaming & GamePass could easily be on future smart TVs or tablets. But don’t get it twisted, just like they said at first Bethesda games won’t be locking out gamers, they lying. You don’t spend that much money to keep the status quo. Just a sad day tor the gaming industry overall. Monopolies are never good for consumers
@Col_McCafferty
Hahahaha 😂 I love it when you entitled know it all types fly off the hinges, foaming with fury and all. Watch your blood pressure, man
Apart from Crash and Spyro and possibly Tony Hawk can't really see what this being so bad for my personal gaming experience on Playstation.
Most Activision-Blizzard games I would play on PC over console. And really apart from Warcraft III and Starcraft II and the Crash and Spyro remakes nothing really interests me that Activision develops.
Call of Duty is just the same game over and over again each year.
If anything I see it as an improvement! No more of Bobby Kottik's microtransactions!
@guntam MS market cap is 2.2 trillion. Where this this 400 billon number everyone is touting has appeared from who knows. Aside from Amazon, Google & Apple who are not interested in buying publishers at this time MS has the cap space to buy all third party publishers. As this articles details the reasons why this sale is industry-changing very well I am confused to why the question is being asked about why it's a problem. It damages Sony's bottom line and promotes MS into a much more powerful position.
@mucc Sony has done just that in the past!! Did you know that SONY charges PUBLISHERS a fee when their game is a cross-platform service??? Like really??? Sony was also the last man standing in the fight to keep Fortnite from going cross-platform. Don't try to make Sony look like victim here, they have played dirty all along. Also, Phil Spencer already mentioned that continued support for other platforms and communities will still be supported. Just like Minecraft. You can still play Minecraft, one of the biggest games of all time, on your PS so relax. I own Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and a PC btw. Also, Gamepass could double in price and still be worth it, so could care less if it goes up in price.
There no longer is an excuse...with COD gone, Sony needs to revive SOCOM in an unprecedented way as the holy grail of military fps games!
Also, Sony has to start loving the hell out of indie devs once more..being the premier place to play indies helps becoming looked at as the sympathetic underdog An image they better start cultivating while at the same time framing MS as the bad soulless multinational megacorp
@lacerz
Lol. Sony has a market cap of 143 billion dollars as of January 2022.
Microsoft is 2.2 trillion dollars.
Different league
It's no bother really. I'll just buy both consoles then I get the best of both worlds 🤠👍
Not played a CoD game since Black Ops so it's no loss for me. If they purchase Ubisoft next then that's when it'll become a problem, whatever happens, I refuse to purchase an Xbox.
@KippDynamite They don't have to pay it back dollar for dollar like that. But they will want a return on investment. For starters they will amalgamate ABK into their business which raises it's net worth. They'll also likely get a larger market share which again will raise their worth as a business.
They also got Candy Crush, COD mobile and many more mobile games. Both with over 100 million players and lots of MTX. A lot of revenue from non Game Pass sources.
Ultimately so much of this money is hypothetical based on stock price etc. they are playing a much bigger game, agree it's impossible to get back via Game Pass etc. Aiming to beat apple and be the first 3 or 4 trillion dollar company.
@Waa-Laa Sony will have to acquire UbiSoft or Square Enix at this rate to survive. Both are manageable given Sony's current capitalization.
The loss of call of duty will definitely hurt, especially with casual gamers switching to the X.
Hopefully this means a return to Sony first party Shooters. I would love a new entry for Resistance, Killzone and Socom!
Nobody's mentioned Overwatch 2 (or 3, 4) yet. There's more of a playerbase to lose than people think.
@Alan_cartridge_ Did you actually read the comment? Maybe if you try, you'll find that people aren't asking those questions at all.
I'll sum up again: to the consumer, which CEOs are walking away with the most profit means nothing.
For me, this makes no difference. I got bored of CoD years ago. It's the same game every year. Never been much if a fan of Bethesda's out put either.
@SweetSummerShunv I hope so, although Square haven't made a decent Final Fantasy since number IX.
@UltimateOtaku91 Spoken like a true fnaboy, this was the only way for MS to "stay relevenat and survive"? Get out outta here with that fanboy BS.
I guarantee if it was the other way round people would be raging against Sony in the comments and asking to fire Jim Ryan for becoming a COD PC platform and anti consumerism.
Haha
Just let PC Box become the COD box and secure From Software games. 😅
It really does make me laugh when people talk about Sony's incredible first party lineup. How many of those games were actually made in-house by Sony development teams??? How many were made by studios that Sony bought or signed exclusivity deals with???
Nintendo is the only one of the three platform holders to have truly built amazing franchises, in-house, from scratch.
It also makes me laugh when people say "Xbox are disgusting for buying 'X'. Sony should now go and buy 'Y'!"
It's genuinely pathetic to hear such childish arguments.
PlayStation will be fine. If anything, this move will force Sony to focus on its strengths and USPs such as VR to make sure it stays competitive.
I really don't care about Microsoft i was always playstation person since the beginning of playstation and i truly don't care about activision or call of duty games that makes it easy. Only thing Sony has to do is step up the game and bring back original games back that started playstation in the first time don't forget grand turismo 7 is coming out soon and that's always been a playstation game so i don't worry about the loss of activision. Bring killzone back we get enough playstation studio games out that's are only on playstation, Microsoft can have activision. I'm not worried it
Money Money Money Sony is making some their games available on other platforms for more money and loosing their advantage. MS is buying out developers to get that advantage and earn more money money money
Removed - unconstructive
Y'know, everyone goes on about Tencent buying everything to be the worst imaginable thing. But isn't that exactly what Microsoft are doing at this point and everyone on the Xbox side, who fears Tencent, is celebrating this? Double standards much?
At this point I'd rather Disney bought everything, atleast it's open to everyone then because they have no obligation to either platform holder.
Not that I'm suggesting this but Sega would be the only thing that can counter both the Zenimax and Activision buyouts imo. And unlike MS Sony can actually legally do it as their HQ is still in Tokyo and are not restricted by the Japanese Foreign Investment Laws.
As far as I know Sega's worth about 5bn so Sony could afford them.
@guntam I read about 80% of all the comments yes? Not that you wanted a response other than in a vain attempt to discredit me. The hostility shown by certain members in this chat makes any reasoned and civilised conversation impossible.
"I'll sum up again: to the consumer, which CEOs are walking away with the most profit means nothing."
I will point you back to the article which again explains this situation very clearly. You as the consumer might not care. That doesn't make the possible negative effects disappear as explained in the article that's the point of this comment section to comment thoughts on the article not to close down all conversation as you feel it's unnecessary. Have a great day, we do not need to continue this conversation.
@pierco
You think sony can run a metaverse? when they can't even run servers? lmao.
Sony needs to use MS cloud servers, and don't have the infrastructure or the experience to run a metaverse.
Trust me sony hasn't got a chance in the metaverse world, this buy isn't about burying sony, sony is small fish, this buy is about grabbing a massive head start by owning IPs to stop the other metaverse players like facebook,google,apple from owning these ips.
Gamepass = a big part of the the future Metaverse
Well, if we don't have call of doody anymore, maybe PS has less reason to charge us for subs, just to play online games... 🤔 I can hope
Sony needs to buy Ubisoft, Capcom and EA. Sony and Microsoft can cozy up and release on the other's platforms when they both have something to gain. One of the benefits of being a PS and PC owner is I alreqdy have access to a lot of Microsoft titles. Would love to see Sony aquire those studios and release a new Megaman Legends, fix those dull Ubisoft titles, fix my "formerly" favorite franchise Battlefield.
@Alan_cartridge_ The consumer perspective is all that should matter to nearly everyone commenting. Once again, none of us are shareholders. All this clucking from hens is meaningless.
If you have an issue with the discussion, feel free to stop responding.
@GADG3Tx87 as a gamer Microsoft buying all these studio's is way worse than tencent buying them.
This year and next, PS5 will continue to sell like hotcakes.
Beyond that? I expect Xbox S & X to overtake them. The question is will Sony continue to fight for their place in the gaming market or will they give up on hardware and just sell software? They own some of the greatest and most talented studios in gaming so will always have a presence, but right now the future is very uncertain.
Hopefully HFW releases on time, is as good if not even better than the first and people remember it's really all about the games.
@get2sammyb
" there’s no acquisition that the Japanese giant could feasibly make to fill the void of one of the biggest brands on its platform"
Apple buys Sony. Boom. All of a sudden there's lot of money and access to bleeding edge hardware teams. PlayStation incorporates Apple Arcade and other services into PS+, and that alone can't be matched by Microsoft.
@GADG3Tx87 Sega games don't sell anywhere near as well as COD alone.
@Col_McCafferty There's no point buying Xbox if you have a PC. Microsoft will continue releasing games on Windows. That alone undermines purchasing Xbox.
@__jamiie you mean Mario 365, Mario Kart, (Mario) Smash, Mario Golf? You're right. Sony is nowhere near as impressive, constantly working on new IPS instead of releasing God of War 123.
@viktorcode I hope not, there aren't many companies I dislike more than MS but Apple are definitely one of them!
Console gamers prefer consoles, their sales aren't that far off PS5 already even with GP being on PC. Of course the future might be app based and then that way nobody owns a copy of a game, just renting them. I thought gamers were against this but turns out they just weren't ready for it at the time.
🙄
@Col_McCafferty well HFW will be better than any of Microsofts studies games thus far and and it isn't even sony's best game, Sony just need 2-3 more studios and they will be fine and they don't have to be the size of Bethesda
@naruball
Who said anything about sales? I just mean that their games are, imo, far better quality than anything Activision have ever produced. For me Yakuza and Persona are in my top 5 franchises of all time.
Microsoft's just Electronic Arts, Rockstar and Ubisoft away from completing the Infinity Gauntlet.
This might be a bit of an overreaction. First, COD may not go exclusive anyway. If you look at the best selling PS4 games as of Feb 2020, 6 of the top 14 are COD. This isn’t like Elder Scrolls or Starfield, that would be a lot of money to leave behind, especially with the MTX revenue that generates. There’s a benefit to Xbox just in having it on GP when other consumers have to pay £70, and in having exclusive maps etc. I also don’t think the average gamer who’s paid £450 for a PS5 expecting their annual COD/FIFA with a few other games on top would take too kindly to suddenly being told that isn’t happening. Xbox would have to tread very carefully with such a move.
If it does disappear of Playstation then yes that’s a blow to Sony. A lot of revenue disappears and a chunk of the casual market probably ups and moves to Xbox. But it isn’t the end of the world, it just means a closer Generation sales wise, possibly with MS edging out on top. But it isn’t just about ‘winning,’ Sony will still have a great system with a load of great games (some exclusive) and make a lot of money. If (like me) you were never bothered about COD in the first place PS5 will still be fantastic.
I think MS saw the chance to pick up a large Company for a decent price that gives them some of the family friendly properties (Crash and Spyro) they’ve been after for their games portfolio. A company that could do better if they can fix the poisonous culture-something good for the industry in general.
However it’s mainly about other markets. The deal gives them a good foothold in Mobile gaming, strengthens their position in esports with Overwatch and gives them a huge MMORPG that they don’t currently have. It’s about their battle with Tencent and Apple more than their battle with Sony in one segment of the market.
"is this the end for Playstation" everything for the clicks huh.
This is no way near the end for Playstation. Not hing comes out of Activision. And that's not gonna change.
@NEStalgia
Well said. I really hope this focuses Sony and wakes them up. A renewed interest in the Japanese market would be a start. At the minute they’re in a pincer movement between MS attacking them in the West and Nintendo eating all their Sushi in Japan. They still have a very strong position, they just need to shake any complacency off. I just hope the current leadership are capable.
@Jay429 forza also released on xbox one so it's also last gen
at 70 bn$ they could have bought all the other publishers combined lmao and that would shatter sony, don't know why they went with activision. EA buyout would have 10x the damage to ps than activision (just fifa's impact= activision's impact, if you think this is bs you don't really get how fifa is popular in 3rd party countries; it's like more people are buying ps for fifa alone than people buying it for other games)
@WanderingBullet EA is enough to hit sony incredibly hard
@Waa-Laa very funny statement
@maxinrelaxin they can't do it themselves since they do not have the talents or vision sony has, they need to buy established developers
@jorel262 rn it's poorer not richer lmao, that's 70 bn$ in cash
@Jenson1975
You have the most hilariouse comment of the year. Microsoft cant keep buying al big companies. It's Prohibited by law. Something with monopoly.
@IonMagi he's mistaking gamepass with psnow lmao
@pierco they make the most used tech in the world rn (windows, office...) they deserve what they have become imo, windows alone drives the whole technology industry forward when a new version is released
@OthmaneAD
EA Doesn't own FIFA - they license it.
Why buy EA just for Fifa, when you can outbid EA and get the fifa rights?
And like I said Microsoft doesn't care about Sony,(I wouldn't be surprised if they buy them at some point too, just for the IP's) However this isn't about burning sony, or the Xbox/ps5 console war, that is small fish, its about owning the content that powers the future metaverse.
70 Billion expensive? certainly not! actually a great deal, MS is positioning itself as the custodians of content that generations grew up on.
@xyopic they didn't buy bethesda, the bought zenimax with a loooot more great ips than activision
@Jay429 i said fifa meaning the soccer game ea sports makes every year, it's still an ea game and rn it's the most played game by far in most countries, if the impact of not having cod more than not having fifa is idk 20 countries, not having fifa will have more impact in the remaining 180 countries, and they can't buy sony or any japanese big name due to The Foreign Investment Regulation
I think 'devastating' is a bit dramatic. It's certainly not good for PlayStation but the brand will survive.
I think the tone Sammy takes in this article is a reflection of much that he's written in the last year.
Its hideously pessimistic and needlessly so in my opinion. This will make a hit in sony's bottom line, but its hardly an end to their very successful business and their fantastic hardware.
Having already sworn to never buy an activision blizzard game again due to their hideous abuse of their staff, its really galling to think that Microsoft have just make Bobby billions, and will be in charge of the most misogynistic abuser management culture in gaming.
As a game pass ultimate subscriber, I'm now thinking of cancelling and moving away from the platform as I'm not interested in my money supporting abusive management teams and MS have been very quite indeed about how they will tackle this. Announcing this deal seems to let abusers off of real scrutiny and seems to delay the changes we should all demand.
MS do not give a rat's arse about gaming. The Xbox is still just a spearhead to get windows and its derivatives as the de facto os for home use.
Game Pass sounds like a wonderful idea but most of my xbox-owning mates say it's devalued games for them. Most games they play for a couple of hours and then move on to the next new thing that pops up on GP.
@viktorcode @IonMagi
Apple cant buy Sony!! Japanse companies cant be bought by other companies but Japanse. And why is everybody saying Sony has't any money? I never looked on Sony,s bankaccount so i don't know what they have.
And Microsoft cant buy all those big companies they don't have enough money fot that. They don't have money trees and the monopoly would become to big. They hanvent bought Activision yet it first has to belooked in to by different countries. Please stop making those dumb comments as if Sony is dying cause they don't they are stil the number one gaming company in the world befor Tencent and Microsoft.
@TommyNL lol, Tencent and Netease were able to buy JP companies so Apple 100% can too. There were already Rumours about Apple being interested in 2019
@Jay429
I wonder why you come to this site. There are also websites for xbox users though.
Microsoft knows it has to buy every gaming company to beat sony, its the only way. Xbox sucks at making good games
@IonMagi no they cant
U.S. companies planning joint ventures with Japan usually find that at least one of these options is unavailable: they cannot buy a Japanese company. Still, U.S. companies can enter a wide range of potential joint venture agreements
And even if a japanese company is bought is HAS to be on SALE. so Sony must sell Playstation. Right..... Dream on
So it seems that Microsoft are not an evil shark after all since Activision looked for other buyers before such as Facebook and others that haven't been disclosed (Tencent?). So good news for the Activision Blizzard staff that will work in a better environment once the process has been completed and for the industry.
@mucc totally agree, microshaft is very short on talent, so they buy buy buy. Guess what? Xbox still sucks lol
The good thing is Spencer did say that he's not going to take games away from other communities so we can stop with the end of the world mentality. So series like CoD and Overwatch will absolutely still come to PS consoles. The thing I don't get is that even if you put those games on GP, does that even lure more people over to the service? Most casuals just buy a console and buy their Madden and CoD every year. They're not going to bother with a subscription service to play extra games they have no interest in. That said it's still terrible for the industry for MS to keep doing this. It's just sad that we went decades without a console maker buying up 3rd party publishers and now since Xbox can't make great games on their own so they were allowed to use big daddy MS's check book and buy 2 of the biggest publishers in the last 2 years. If you Xbox fanboys think this is good for the industry you're insane and don't come crying when everything is live service.
@Banjo- completely disagree, xbox has to buy all the studios to try and keep up with ps. Nobody wants xbox still. Lol
@TommyNL Thats why I said a hostile Takeover is possible if their Stock decreases even more. For that the management doenst have to be willing to sell but the shareholders
The hysterical - and I don’t mean funny - reactions to this takeover really do need to calm down. Social media has its uses but some of the reactions have been so over the top it’s almost beyond fantasy. There are arguments for and against the takeover but it’s happening. Firstly let’s hope that MS get rid of the toxicity at Activision/Blizzard as an absolute priority. There is still too much toxicity in the gaming arena and that has to end.
When it comes to the takeover itself , I just don’t see that MS will suddenly stop some huge franchises coming to PlayStation. The more systems games like CoD are on the more money MS will make and that’s not something they are going to just push aside. There could be a case of timed exclusives but that’s probably the biggest difference that will be seen. The games will still come.
The idea that this is the end of Nintendo or PlayStation is completely ludicrous. I understand the size of the news but seriously there is a need to get a grip on reality and remember that the gaming industry is at its strongest point on many a year.
The news might not please everyone but it’s not the death knell to gaming some would try and have us believe.
@WallyWest ps will be fine. Xbox is a big step down. Xbox has to buy studios because they are terrible st developing games other than halo and forza.
@bbauer36 "microshaft is very short on talent, so they buy buy buy. Guess what? Nobody wants xbox still. Lol @Banjo- completely disagree, xbox has to buy all the studios to try and keep up with ps. Nobody wants xbox still. Lol".
Many people prefer Xbox games over PS games (not on this site for obvious reasons and not trying to convince fanboys of anything). Truth is, last year, Xbox games were better received than Sony's in terms of sales and reviews. Even if Horizon Forbidden West is a great game, it will sell 10m at best which is what the prequel shipped on the most popular platform of the last generation. Bear in mind that most of PS4 owners bought it for Call of Duty, FIFA and GTA according to the software sales charts. Those are the games that drive hardware sales. Sony's exclusives are not as important as they seem and will be less important for the platform this generation. The biggest Sony game right now is MLB The Show 21 that is multiplatform and most Sony exclusives are coming to PC as well. Anyway, the acquisition is good news considering that the alternative was Facebook and that Activision Blizzard were looking for that kind of buyers and that's the only thing I really wanted to say on here. If Activision Blizzard games will come or not to PS5 in the future (2023 and beyond) is something that we don't know for sure but it seems quite unlikely. Last but not least, Sony would have bought Activision Blizzard if they could.
@TommyNL
Because I own all consoles and I like to read news regarding my playStation!
I'm completely neutral, a year ago you 100% would see me on Xbox pages complaining about games, how bad halo looked etc, but credit where credit is due and MS do listen to the players and have turned the console around, Personally I have no problem with MS wrapping up Activision, it saves me spending 80$ on any new COD/Overwatch, etc game
I've got a Gaming Laptop and a PS4 Pro.
A lot of people have a foot in both camps , so on the whole this will not affect many.
Sony just needs to do what it does at the moment . Make really good exclusive games and they will be fine.
They were never going to be the size of Microsoft , so it would be crazy to try and compete on studio acquisitions alone.
An interesting asymetric response could be to start working on PS Home/Metaverse together with Epic. Add value to the PS ecosystem and hit MS where they can't compete: innovation and creativity.
Petty Microsoft has been holding a grudge ever since Sony made fun of their Xbox one reveal fiasco. Small dick energy for sure.
@Jaberwocky It affects gamers by stiffling competition, and by consequence innovation and creativity.
As a gamer, I may get a series X if the good games are there, same reason I got a PS5 or a Switch. But the Microsoft ways always leave a bad taste in the mouth.
I hope they do great things with the ip they've been acquiring but their history doesn't give me a lot of hope.
@Milktastrophe You are already late, it was actually Sony who copied XBox Achievements and named them Trophies. Microsoft lets you actually purchase things with them as many count towards their rewards scheme.
@TommyNL Pfft... Apple may just open Japanese subsidiary for the merger. Most likely they already have one.
Wow, I was expecting Push Square to be more optimistic.
This article reads like an obituary for Sony...I don't agree completely.
COD is ripe for challenge and replacement. Activision is bloated and stale.
When MS bought Rare, they immediately when into lazy sleep mode.
Nintendo could care less, because now they can sell more of their own games.
If Activision is leaving PS, other companies should jump in to fill the viod.
@electrolite77 That's the biggest wildcard. Not anything MS is doing, but what Sony is doing in light of that and how their management team perceives and reacts to their position in the market.
I said in a post here, probably December of 2020, around when the consoles were launching, when we were all discussing Jim Ryan's failings, that Jim is the kind of leader that does great when the company is at the top and things are doing well, and the kind of leader that's a complete disaster the moment things turn downward, and that eventually with MS rising, they'd hit that point. His view looks at how to maximize margin across the board when in a dominant position. How to leverage a captive market. He's the kind of leader you'd expect from MS back in the 360 days that lost the house of cards.
He's not a leader that can creatively regroup and strategize around changing conditions and claw back market and loyalty. If Kaz, House, Tretton were around I don't think there'd be anything to worry about. Yeah, MS is going to eat their lunch with the mainstream market, but those were leaders that could quickly adapt, see their failings and pivot to secure a new position for themselves. Ryan? I don't think he can pivot like that. I can only picture him trying to stick with what worked until real damage sets in and it's clear that it's not working anymore and too much good will is lost. I can't see him recognizing a change a pivoting to win loyalty before any attrition sets in. Any damage from that approach won't be Microsoft's fault, it'll be self-inflicted. Hopefully other silent leaders within PS can see what's going on, but I also don't get the impression Ryan lets others speak often.
In light of finding out that apparently Activision was shopping for buyers, I think the ire towards Microsoft here is misplaced. Yes, Sony's the one that takes the biggest hit out of this and is put in the worst position, but, as much as seeing industry consolidation sucks, the narrative is different as "Microsoft buys Activision from the auction block from under Facebook" versus "Microsoft swoops in and hostilely buys Activision out of nowhere to kill PlayStation." Yesterday it looked like they bought them in a power play out of nowhere, and that set a really ugly precedent in the industry. Knowing today that Activision was actively looking for buyers, and actively seeking the big-tech buyers, they were finished anyway apparently. Or looking to escape their PR nightmare by just ditching it.
Fanboy wars aside, MS is the only "big capital" company that seems dedicated to "gaming as we know it" - yes they're changing it in some ways, but also combining that with keeping what we know. They rest are too eager to bend it into trendy business models. MS is towing the middle ground between trend and tradition, and that's really consistent across all their products. I'd rather Activision stayed independent, ditched Kotick, and stopped sucking, but if they were actively shopping buyers, MS is the only one in the bracket that can afford them that will actually keep Activision being Activision. (The old Activision, not the Kotick Activision.)
Kotick was a nasty dictator, but, I did used to give him credit. When Vivendi was done brutalizing Activision, there was nothing much of it left. Kotick turned it around and made it solvent. He does deserve credit for that, or Activision would have been finished by the time PS4 launched. But then he ended up doing the same kind of damage they had done.
This still is bad for PS, but with a backdrop where MS wasn't actively poaching megapublishers but just grabbed one with a "for sale" sign, I think managing this is squarely on PS's management now, it'll hurt only as much as they let it by not realigning how they approach their market. Their approach so far has been one of power over a captive audience. They were the default market. This changes their narrative to being the outsider fighting for their market against the "default". Traditionally that's when they've been at their best. But those were different leaders.
What MS mostly payed for was veteran talent and studios. Putting a studio together from scratch and attracting established talent doesn't always pan out and can take a long time. Just look at 343 industries to take over Halo after Bungie.
MS buying Activision/Blizzard solves this. Even if they really only have a handful of active IPs and franchises.
They get over 1/2 a dozen studios that are currently working on COD alone.
I think most people agree that if MS trims that down to only 1-2 permanent developers and get away from a yearly release, the industry would be better for it. Nobody likes paying $60 for an annualized game that's essentially cut and paste. Gamepass is worth it.
The remaining studios could be repurposed for other projects.
There are so many other possibilities with thier other franchises as well. A console port of WoW being put on gamepass will sell. Reviving scrapped projects like StarCraft Ghost, etc. There are a lot of possibilities for MS to capitalize on.
What Sony really needs to do though is rethink thier strategy. Because they've been so anti consumer lately, it's going to drive gamers to Xbox & gamepass.
They can't keep up with PS5 production, yet pushing PS4 sales, when Sony has already said gamers won't get free PS5 game upgrades, isn't going to fly with gamers in the long run. Getting double dipped on games and paying a markup for ps5 games to boot.
I'm not concerned yet. If Sony is no longer the industry leader, that doesn't necessarily affect my gaming habits. It's not as if Sony is disappearing.
When the Wii U was a niche console, I still owned it and enjoyed it for what it was, and Nintendo bounced back. Microsoft may have won the round, but the fight is far from over.
@costa69gr trophies are superior to Xbox achievements. Just having the different grades instead of meaningless numbers goes a long way.
@kabal82 @NEStalgia I agree.
@Ben_Rage_V2 Wii U was very underrated when Switch is praised for being Wii U Pro. That's the thing, probably Sony needed something like this to react because they had become too arrogant and Jim Ryan hasn't helped. They still have their studios that are specialised in cinematic semi-open world games, not my favourite Sony games because I'd rather play Wipeout (I pre-ordered it for PS4) but games that have an audience, regardless. They can make things right even if they're no longer the default platform like PS4 was. They should focus on development and waste less money on buying third-party timed exclusivity.
@viktorcode I don’t think MS care if you buy an Xbox. They’re thinking beyond plastic boxes, as long as people have a pc, mobile, tablet or smart tv you’re a potential customer. Potentially hundreds of millions of customers.
Sony are, at the moment, reliant on selling consoles to establish a user base.. They’re starting to release on PC but it may be too little too late in the game
@BolkaRover
Good lord the ignorance...
Educate yourself please.
@naruball 😂😂😂 Are you you seriously trying to compare Nintendo's in-house, non-purchased output to Sony's???
I'm a huge PlayStation fan but that's just incorrect.
I'm a Nintendo fan, but have a ps4 and pop by this site from time to time.
Just feels like Xbox couldn't make games on par with Playstation and Nintendo so just bought the publishers.
COD alone is a huge get. MS won't stop at this also, Ubisoft looks good for the taking.
Nintendo consoles sell on Nintendo games, the ripple effect will hit them to a lesser extent but for Playstation have just been smacked into the ocean.
@lacerz thanks for that but I didn’t mention net worth. I said market cap.
@ThomasCasson
I'm a gamer and not a fanboy. Have a series X, PS5 and a decent gaming PC.
Sony has really only been good for thier 1st party games and handful of single player exclusives each gen, sinces the PS3. They've gone the way of Nintendo. Yes, they are making a big push on VR, but Sony track record of commitment is spotty. Just look at the Vita and PSP.
If you play MP games, Xbox has been the go to eco system for those games and those types of games dominate the industry.
If Sony really wants to change the narrative, they need to start investing in more than just single player story driven games. God of War, Horizon, Dark Souls isn't going to cut it. They have no flagship fps or even 3rd person fps, since they scrapped Socom. And thier flagship racing game is leagues behind what is currently offered on Xbox with the Forza series.
If this deal goes through, MS pretty much cornered the market on the majority of western/NA manufactured content.
Sony and Nintendo are good are selling games from Asian & EU content makers.
@BolkaRover
My OP was on net worth, not market cap.

I don't see this purchase being the inevitable end of Playstation domination. Call of Duty is huge, no doubt, but very few gaming franchises stay at the top forever. One major exception is of course sports games, as sports themselves will always be popular, but as we saw with MLB, I don't think there's any chance sports games will go exclusive to anyone.
20 years ago, the yearly top 10 always had a Medal of Honour, Need for Speed, a Tony Hawk. Then 10 years later, they were pretty much all gone. Then it was Guitar Hero, every year without fail, and then very, very quickly it disappeared.
You have to ask, how many people buy COD just because family are asking if they want a game for Christmas or a birthday and that's what springs to mind as it's so ubiquitous. Doesn't mean they'll go and buy a console just to keep at it. Sure, the really hardcore people will, but the vast majority of COD players, same as FIFA and Madden are very, very casual.
Part of me can't help but feel a little amused by it though. I remember being a kid with a saturn who couldn't afford to go buy a console, and my parents definitely were not going to buy me a 2nd one. How horrible it was watching Sony pay publishers to skip the saturn and just be on Playstation instead. The Saturn was the lead platform for the original Tomb Raider, and then all of a sudden it was gone and become arguably Sony's biggest franchise for that console generation.
@Milktastrophe You have a very fanboy-ish way to define meaningless. I am finding them great as I can use them to purchase goods through MS rewards. Other than boast, what good are Sony trophies?
I think now would be a good time for Sony to try and secure the exclusive rights to Titanfall of it's at all possible.
It really is the only alternative fps series, since Sony didn't really seem to care about holding onto Destiny.
@arsmolinarc
It's like comparing a goldfish to a whale, Microsoft don't care about what sony does.
there are levels and sony ain't anywhere near the level of MS, only a hand full of companies are.
MS don't want to fight sony, they don't care about sony!
MS just wants to own content and to be the premium metaverse provider.
That's it, they don't go and spend 70 billion because of a Twitter post in 2015 lmao
@kabal82 You make out Europe and Japan are small fry? Yes, North America is the biggest market and XBOX's strongest but the gap between XBOX from Nintendo and Playstation is much smaller than Xbox's gap in Europe and Japan, and the rest of the world. Yes VGC are not always accurate but is used by the Guinness Book of records and the like.

The concern is you buy a PS for those first-party games and those third-party offerings, COD was its biggest selling game last year. Whilst XBOX there wasn't much going on away from those third-party games. Once they become first party, PS is officially in a Nintendo situation, and they have never been in that before.
@Peach64 I think it's more than just "CoD is gone, PSDOOOMED." It's sort of a zombie apocalypse effect. They've been the monopoly for a generation now, they've been looking abusive to consumers for a while now while MS was looking friendlier and friendlier, but Activision is a 1-2 punch. It either removes, or siphons to their competitor the huge funding or the console sales draw of their #1 game, year in and year out. Plus it bolsters their competitors development capacity by almost 10,000 employees, all of them experienced, trained, and in place, ready to go. So in one day not only did MS take their #1 game by sales and a huge console sales driver, but they also massively expanded their in-house first party studios on a scale Sony can't match. And it's a ripple effect that will just keep growing MS's capability as they get through existing contrats and move into new dev. As good as the payoff will be in 2024, it'll be immense in 2030. So they lost their #1 seller to their competitor, who just grew on an exponential scale in terms of output capability, AND it focuses eyeballs on the immense value their competitors product offers, leaving their exclusives as the only real benefit they have, while also highlighting they can have less of them than that competitor that was already ahead most other places.
CoD may not have stood at #1 forever, but it's stood a long time and Sony relies on its stable revenue. Whether it would have held in 2029 doesn't matter, it affects them right now and they have to react right now.
Yeah, the CoD crowd is casual, and the combined sports crowd is bigger. FIFA, NBA, MLB are still huge draws for them. Bigger probably. But the casual crowd also doesn't research what console they buy. They don't care. And they REALLY don't care about HFW or Returnal or GoW. They just buy what everyone else is playing on. And if everyone else is playing CoD on an Xbox, or it's better on Xbox, or if it's a fraction of the price and you get tons of other games on Xbox, even if it's not at first, give it a few years and word of mouth will send a lot of casuals to Xbox.
Meanwhile Sony's been treating the core gamers like dirt. They make some great games, but they make you feel like they're extorting you when you buy them.
There's two ways a major changeup can impact a console. All at once, which is what happened with Matrick with the X1 where most of the Xbox owner base, among the early adopters, ran out and bought a PS4, and from there the casuals looked at what was "best" and found it was PS4.
The other is slow attrition that over the course of the generation more and more people just quietly start buying Xboxes, then playing/buying more and more on those xboxes so that when PS6 releases, the former PS market is hollowed out.
This could go either way, but it will have a strong effect, whether fast or slow. It's bigger than whether CoD itself is exclusive or not. But it's really up to them and how they approach the market they do have. Right now they don't have the top game, the lowest prices, the best value, the cheapest console, the most services, or the biggest first party studios. Inertia and critical praise is mostly what they have right now. They can use inertia to shift into a better direction, but it depends on if the leadership is capable of such thought.
@NEStalgia Yep, people forget that Xbox 360 was more popular than PS3. Most people don't care what console to play on but where's Call of Duty, in this case. Inertia will keep PS afloat, though.
Off-topic: The thing that really puzzles me is Wii U, how come only 13m in the world supported a Nintendo console when Nintendo software is only playable on Nintendo hardware. Makes you think how few brand fans there really are.
@Banjo- The Wii U was very difficult to explain to people. The gamepad was used in different ways depending on the game - and the mass market doesn't like to have to be explained anything. Nintendo was being too clever for their own good.
The mums, dads, and grandparents didn't see the point of owning another Wii as they had one at home. Also, from a franchise point of view as a Nintendo fan, it didn't get an awful lot. Splatoon is great and a welcome new IP as is Mario Maker. Nintendo supported the 3DS very well, however.
Also, the PS3 outsold the XBOX 360 in the end.
@knowles2 Enter? Sony entered into it before Microsoft. Sony have been tipped alongside Apple to maybe finish it before Meta. Sony have been working on it well before the PS5 launch and as mentioned its new tech revolved around the metaverse. They have invested massively into the meta one investment being Epic Games into which $200M was invested and they are working on meta for Sony. Microsoft by the looks of it late to the table so spent $70B to catch up with the rest
@Jay429 your comment shows how unknowledgeable you are as Sony one of of the leaders in Meta. Maybe before you comment on something you know very little about do some research. You're nothing but an ignorant dim-witted Xbox fanboy that thinks he knows more than he actually does.
@OthmaneAD what are you talking about. make random dumb comments does not equate to knowledge
@ThomasCasson Yep, Iwata presented the Wii U as if it was a Wii peripheral with a GamePad in his hand but, afterwards, Nintendo fans realised it was the new Nintendo console and still only 13m bought it (myself included). Most console gamers are agnostic or casual players and these sites represent a tiny bubble of the global market. Most gamers play Fortnite, Call of Duty, FIFA or GTA and don't care if it's PS or Xbox. Nintendo is all about exclusives but still can tank.
@NEStalgia What a long winded bible of nonsense from an Xbox fan boy hahaha give it up man!
@Banjo- At no point did I think it was an add-on for the Wii. But yes the majority of people did thanks to awful advertising. The Wii U tanked but the 3DS did 75 million, more than the Xbox One. In the age of tablets, portable gaming with buttons and sticks still leaves a mark and we see that success with the switch. The Wii U wasn't appealing and didn't have a lot of first-party games from Nintendo. The Switch's first-party offerings are much better. But also remember people were tired of the Wii by 2011. I can see why Nintendo kept the branding on the 'Wii' but it also hindered it.
I don't think we disagree on anything, the concern for PlayStation is one of those mega games you listed COD is now in the hands-on XBOX. I would definitely put Minecraft in that bracket also. The comment section here and on Nintendo life are not the masses who play those AAA multiplats. I do think Playstation is edging towards a Nintendo situation, reliant more than ever on their first party. A position they haven't been in before.
@pierco lol a leader in meta? Tell me who is going to be running those meta servers?
Also please show me some evidence of sony being a leader in the metaverse? loool
@costa69gr you got 5G. You got 30G. You got 200G. Those numbers are meaningless compared to bronze, silver, gold. What good is your gamer score number? It doesn't provide a indication of your achievements, but X bronze, Y silver, Z gold, W platinum is an indication of your achievements.
@Slippship There will be a ruling. The question is when...?
@kyleforrester87 I don't think this is the same. It's a megalogiant squashing competition. Hardly a good thing.
@bjorn_oakenstream my point is it’s all a series of ups and downs.
Article is premature and fanciful as you'd expect to draw clicks but I'd just like to point out PS is not losing COD 'soon', this deal will take until 2023 to pass muster and it may be blocked as that is a long way away really.
My own view is BIG TECH (Apple, Amazon, Meta, MS, Google) should have been broken up and tackled years ago. There is growing appetite for it as the 1st world economies citizens gets poorer in real terms each year aside from the 1% who continually get richer and people are starting to wake up to the fact that society is unbalanced in socio-economic terms.
The quirk about MS is even thought they are part of the perfidious BIG TECH cartel, they've flown under the radar despite in some valuations being richer than any company on the planet, even Apple...so now the focus and spotlight will be turned on them as it should have been years ago.
@ThomasCasson COD is not 'now in the hands of Xbox' is it, the deal may not go through at all and if it does, conservative estimates put COD under the ownership of Xbox in 2023...so I think you kids need to calm down.
Can't help to feel Sony overplayed their hand. They were hell-bent in destroying Xbox by moneyhatting (temporarily or permanently) every third party they could get their hands on (lately: Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Persona, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, Knights of the old Republic, Starfield itself), they woke up the sleeping behemoth.
@Banjo- WiiU is so strange because we so often think games sell systems, yet games didn't sell that system. And it's not that the games were undesirable. The same games sold again, for more money on different hardware sold great, AND sold hardware. But I think there are lessons there about what we (and the industry) accepts commonly sells hardware and what actually sells hardware.
WiiU was the perfect storm though. Just as PS5 has inertia from PS4 that can carry it, somewhat, even if things get rough, WiiU had near zero, they flipped off core gamers with the Wii, the casuals went mobile, and the in between lost interest after years of drought. It was marketed horribly, the hardware looked dated and was undesirable, and big publishers like EA were actively sowing doubt about it for their own ends, and it's initial launch success was stopped dead by the PS4 February reveal, including the fake Watch_Dogs footage from Ubi showing PS4 to be immensely more impressive than it actually was. And on top of all that, it's biggest competitor was the 3DS. They were competing against themselves and their other system was the one with most of the 1st party and exclusive content. It's a weird situation for WiiU, but one with a lot of lessons for observers, not just what not to do, but what tends to influence what. No question Sony and MS learned a lot by watching that.
@ThomasCasson I'd say PS1 and PS3 were heavily reliant on first party and exclusive 3rd party like Nintendo. PS4 relied too heavily on 3rd party multiplat and was unusual for PS. PS2 was pretty well balanced in general. They haven't not been in the Nintendo situation before, but it's new in the modern era. In a lot of ways they're at their best in the Nintendo situation. Maybe Nintendo is, too.
@Immortal_Barnet Somehow, I don't see the American government stopping an American company for the benefit of Chinese (Tencent) and Japanese (Sony) companies. Could be wrong, of course, but that's not like the US government. Maybe the European Union?
@Immortal_Barnet @ferago42 There's almost no chance of the US government stopping it. Their modus operandi for decades has been "is there any other player in the industry? If yes, it's not a monopoly, it's fine." They accept duopoly as perfectly competitive. They even accept "is there a completely different product that indirectly competes", and if the answer is yes, it's also fine.
The merger between Sirius and XM Sat Rad really explains all there is to know about how US currently handles trust regulation. They allowed the excuse that internet streaming, iPods, and terrestrial radio, along with other non-music entertainment is sufficient competition, so one single satellite radio provider isn't a monopoly, as long as they pandered to caveats like including more Spanish language channels, and allowed a la carte (structured so badly it's far more expensive than buying the original packages anyway) pricing. That wasn't as significant as big tech buying up more industry as a trust, but was the creation of an actual monopoly in an industry by suggesting that other industries with different products count as sufficient competition.
By the same logic, Microsoft providing the only console at all would be judged as non-monopoly, because PC and Apple Arcade exist. FTC is a rubber stamp for business, like the rest of government.
The only time in recent memory I can remember a total rejection of a merger was Sprint and AT&T. Yet they weirdly let Sprint and T-Mobile merge, and I think rejecting AT&T had more to do with getting rubbed the wrong way for AT&Ts openly ludicrous arguments that pretended they were some sort of minor company that just couldn't compete without bringing in Sprint. (The only thing they really wanted from Sprint was their low-frequency spectrum.)
@Immortal_Barnet 2023 is next year. Then its all XBOX's to do what they want with it. Yes it is XBOX's - forever.
@NEStalgia Nintendo has been in the 'Nintendo situation' ever since N64. Playstation has never been in this situation so we don't know if they are at their best in it.
The revenue from COD players is very important for PS subs, and shooters have been trying to dethrone it for 15 years and failed. Playstation isn't going to get a game to replace it in a year's time. XBOX can play nice and have it on PS (for now) but it's literally making money on its rival platform. It's a win-win for MS.
The US government won't stop this. This kind of deal wouldn't create a monopoly. As MS is a 1st party developer. They created the hardware, Activision/Blizzard is a 3rd party publisher game developer. They don't have a leg in the hardware race to begin with.
Honestly it didn't stop Disney from buying Marvel, Lucas Film or Fox and beefing up their catalog
If MS was trying to Buy Valve it would be a different story IMO.
Also from what I've read, MS still won't be the market leader if this deal goes through. They would still be number 3 behind Tencent & Sony based on revenue.
@NEStalgia yeah I agree, I mean, also the US gov has been keen on having the upper hand on anything tech related, and I believe they'd rather have an American company in the lead than allowing a Japanese company (whose government is very protectionist and constantly manipulative of their economy) like Sony, or worse, a China's Tencent, gobble up the market.
UE won't stop this either.
@NEStalgia I remember the official announcement. Iwata with GamePad in hand, "This is Wii U". Wait, that oversized controller is a Wii what? Even Nintendo fans didn't know if it was a peripheral since the console was not shown at that moment. Wii U had third-party support but briefly and mostly last-gen ports. It had good first-support in the beginning, better than Switch. Then Switch comes with Wii U ports and becomes a craze. We learnt there are only 13m Nintendo unconditional fans in the world. Of course, the hyped PS4 with fake trailers didn't help. Meanwhile, Don Mattrick was sinking the X-boat. Everything was favouring PS4.
"PS4 relied too heavily on 3rd party multiplatform".
Not just that but as @ferago42 said above (spot on), they got too cocky moneyhatting but without realising that they would not be able to do what others could and then they woke up the sleeping behemoth. Now Sony has to focus on development like Nintendo, if they keep playing dirty they might trigger more acquisitions that they can't afford. If Sony focus on development, they will be alright.
@IonMagi Never going to happen, and you're theorising about a couple of days, when Sony's market cap is higher than it has been for decades.
Also they apparently had $44bn - $48bn cash on hand at the end of last year.
Disagree. It was the same when Disney bought Fox. „Netflix is over, Netflix is done“! Yeah. We know how that played out. Microsoft lost over 50% of their money to purchase Activision. Paying 45% above Activisions actual worth. They are not doing this to battle sony, they want Apple being forced to allow Gamepass on iPhones. Meaning 1 billion potential subscribers. That’s the only way to bring the budget back. Microsoft has complete different focus than sony. Sony never focused on being the market leader, otherwise they would MTX everything they can and buy/focus on mobile games. The question is more, who remains market leader in the console market, not overall game market. Sony will not be beaten by Microsoft. And sorry but Nintendo in better shape than Sony when it comes to exclusives?^^ Sony has over 25 games in development, half of them are new Ips. Microsoft and Sony have now, thanks to the purchase the same amount of money left and you will see, that Sony will not join these purchase spree. They simply don’t need it. For the same reason netflix doesn’t needs marvel/paramount/fox. Microsoft wasted in total 80B dollars in total, to buy legacy brands. Old brands. While sony will spend the money on new brands. And I will guarantee you, regardless how big CoD was on PlayStation, it won’t matter. I know alone so many CoD players who would never leave Sonys first party line up just for CoD. Microsoft will just become the shooter brand. And CoD state is more serious than you do here. CoD is on a downward spiral. Same with battlefield. Those spirals struck not from one year to an other, but those ips decline. I think that people will really wonder what Sony has to offer. Knowing that, thanks to my wife and her job, I can just say that Sony will not lose the market leader title in console gaming. Overall gaming, it’s not market leader anyway.
Overreactions like this are nothing new. Been there for 30 years. Especially the American press, never understood why people go to PlayStation in first place and not to Xbox. They could play CoD there as well but they choose PlayStation.
And it’s not that clear that CoD is leaving for good. Minecraft stayed as well. CoD is much more lucrative than any Bethesda brand. Because of the repetition. And allowing Gamepass to come to PlayStation is not a big deal too. People have these days already multiple services. If sony doesn’t bring first party to their own Gamepass anyway, from day one, then it hurts them 0 on the Fp sales. And Gamepass on PlayStation would not be free for microsoft either.
I just hope sony doesn’t jump on that purchase thing. They have not both similar cash. 100B assets difference. 200 vs 300. They should rather focus on new brands and not buy publishers for sake of buying them.
100% agreed, them losing Spyro and Crash must hurt BIG TIME.
@ferago42 @Banjo- definitely agreed with you guys on the moneyhatting waking the sleeping giant. It was reckless and spiteful, and didn't really even benefit ps much. MS buying Bethesda probably really opened their eyes to how Sony has been operating, hearing from Bethesda about the negotiations. Heck all the way back to og xb there's the stories about how ms would be having good talks with Japanese developers and then at some event or party a Sony handler would be standing next to those same devs and they'd suddenly pretend theyd never met the xb people they were previously having good negotiations with, and the deals would evaporate. Sony has played pretty dirty for a long time and they partly created this monster. This really really really consumer friendly monster... 😂
LOL this waste of money buyout will not effect Sony at all. Still puts MS in 3rd place! Acti-blizz own games are mostly trash and dying anyway, let alone with the massive lawsuit over their heads! A few scrubs will get an xflop thinking CoD will be going exclusive, which it won't! 70% of sales were PS! Same boring ***** posts when they bought Zenimax, nothing has changed nor nothing will in the future! So many don't know ***** its funny! Crash and Spyro wasn't Sony's IP so won't have any effect. Best games are still on PS!
@Milktastrophe I couldn't care less if they are called bronze, points or beans. All I care is I can use MS points to buy real goods while Sony trophies have no value whatsoever
@NEStalgia
Couldn’t agree more. Everything we know about Ryan suggests he isn’t what Sony need right now.
For all the panic, Sony are still in a very strong position that they’ve worked hard to create over the last 27 years. They have earned tremendous loyalty from many fans. Challenges come and go, they’ve faced them down before, what they need now is energy, imagination, and creativity. I’d like to see a response in terms of new services, better backwards compatibility to exploit that huge back catalogue they have, development deals, a slew of announcements even.
Beyond that I’d like to see a pivot to the Japanese market. Not just because personally I’ve been disillusioned by the Americanisation of Playstations output (and I have) but because there’s real potential there in terms of software that I think MS would struggle to exploit.
But will we see that? I’m not confident.
I say put GamePass on PS now and let us all subscribe and create a massive drain on M$ balance sheets before Phil is dragged into Satya Nadella's office. Then the subscription will go up to something that makes financial sense (£40 a month?) and every PS owner drops the service as hopefully we'll have some other 1st/3rd party games by then.
@NEStalgia I agree on Jim-bob. Maybe I'm being hard on him as the pandemic has caused delays and shortages but I can't see us being in this situation if Layden hadn't had his position made untenable. At this time we need a Playstation evangelist and not an accountant.
@Happychocobo ive been telling my friends for about a year, how gaming will change, but no one is listening or had listened to me. So all of this stuff starts happening and people are like "wow how did you know this stuff was going to happen?"
Because I know the greed in men's hearts, thing will get bad
@mucc i agree with you wholeheartedly, I was crying when I see the thing I love soo much going on 3 decades slowly dying....
@CrushALL Im loving all of the comments, and the different points of view.. I keep telling people "its the games not the consoles that make gamers want to have (plug in here) hardware. I dont really care too much about the acquisition, i dont play COD, i never got into Crash Or Spyro or any other game that Activision was pumping out..
Lets not forget ACTIVISION was a console in the early 80's and they couldnt last so they started making games exclusively.. It also makes me wonder, "what was happening and the reason for the buy out?" maybe this was a tell tell sign of the company having financial issues and or having faulty franchises.? we shall see what happens, im not worried im CONCERNED at this point.
Is this the end of PlayStation? Hahaaaa!!!
@sanderson72 Yeah, it's not just the delays, that may well be out of Ryan's fault, and the whole industry is facing it. But so much else of what Ryan does is just tonedeaf to what fans want or expect, and as you said, he's an accountant, not a strategist. He's great at managing margins and growth during the good times, but he's not much of a forward-thinking risk-taker when it comes to planning for a decade of changes in the industry before it happens. The excuse until now is, fans aren't his customer, the masses are, and they don't pay attention to or want the things fans do. And it's been true. But with a shift like this, those masses aren't really the main customer anymore. I think there's a better chance of Pikmin 4 releasing as a PS exclusive than Ryan actually pivoting from "keep doing it until it stops working" as a strategy.
I lost count of how many times I've commented here something along the lines of "people need to realize that loyal fans that are on sites like this aren't his main market. The masses that buy CoD and FIFA are..." Well.....that backfired, lol.
@costa69gr I couldn't care less about Microsoft points, all I care is having something to show off and remember my achievements. That gives trophies more value.
I think ps will stay on top,just maybe slightly less so.
Hope people stay loyal to a true game maker, producer that is Sony.
@Jay429 Because they are but you really do not understand do you. Sony have been investing in Meta since the original VR, they have been investing into studios who are developing meta foundations and games. They are building tech that is developing and building meta. Unlike what Facebook(Meta) think this will not be in control or so called won by a solitary company but will be a shared response. Meta are worried because of all this. Regarding Sony they are in a win win situation and will be good regardless of the final outcome regarding meta.
@pierco is a 70 billion purchase of activison not investment then? how about another 7 billion on bethesda?
Do you honestly think Microsoft is not investing/planning for a metaverse?
They have the servers, they have the funds, they now have the studios + Developers.
Sony has no chance in the meta wars, they just don't have the resources.
Regardless of who you support, monopolies and anti-consumer behaviour hurts the industry. The only way Microsoft could have exclusives is to throw their clout around. Their exclusives up until now have been *****.
@Tasuki yea to playstation again lol. it's home.
@Jay429 you are the epitome of an xbox fanmoron. I have literally said on this feed that Microsoft buying Activision is about Metaverse. You have zero clue about Meta and what Sony are doing. Metaverse will not be completed or won by any single company. No company will lose out of this however uneducated idiots like yourself lost in your own fanboy ideology of a console war which does not exist. Sony have been designing tech for Meta and its currently being used to build meta by studios. They are building one of the richest Football Clubs in Manchester Cities Metaworld. They have patents on tech and process's which will be used in a meta world. Regardless of what happens in Metaverse Sony will win out of it.

Everyone saying this is the end of COD on PlayStation & all the “Xbox is better” fanboys celebrating it, I hate to bust your bubble, not really, but Phil Spencer with Xbox tweeted this👇
Phil Spencer
@XboxP3
Had good calls this week with
leaders at Sony. I confirmed our
intent to honor all existing
agreements upon acquisition of
Activision Blizzard and our desire to
keep Call of Duty on PlayStation.
Sony is an important part of our
industry, and we value our
relationship.
@Ken_Kaniff get a grip 😂😂😂
