The never-ending cup that is ex-Sony Bend director Jeff Ross runneth over with more inside secrets on ideas that will presumably not come to fruition. You may remember that the Days Gone man recently hinted some work had started on an open world Resistance game, following the studio’s decision not to proceed with a sequel to Deacon St. John’s debut.
And now we have a little more information about what it could have looked like, courtesy of a Ross interview with USA Today. It’s worth noting that the director openly admits he only worked on the project for “about a week”, so we’re effectively talking about scribbles on a notepad here, rather than a fully fleshed out game design.
The big concept here was that the Chimera’s mothership would always be in the sky, looming over the sandbox. Think of the mountain in Journey or Hyrule Castle in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: you know your objective is to get there, but you have to explore the rest of the world first. That was the pitch, conceived by senior designer Eric Jensen and championed by Ross, for Resistance.
“I just thought it would be really epic to see this mothership somewhere and know that was the endgame and have it always hovering in the sky,” Ross said. “And then in the meantime, before you can attack it, you had to level up, you had to build factions, you had to build your army, you had to figure out how to get a ship to get up there or another way to get up there.”
The type of game Ross teases sounds a lot like Far Cry, where you’re capturing Chimera bases and strongholds to turn the tides of the war. He alludes to the series’ imaginative arsenal of firearms playing a big part in keeping the gameplay fresh, as you’d always have options for how you want to approach skirmishes.
The pitch, like Days Gone 2, ultimately went nowhere, and now Ross has left and Sony Bend is working on a new intellectual property. We like the Resistance idea a lot – it sounds cool – but we imagine there are thousands upon thousands of great ideas that never make it out of a notebook in studios around the world. You can’t miss what you never had.

Resistance is still my favorite fps franchises ever.and in my list of top 4 favorite franchises ever.a open world resistance would be amazing.word up son
I'd love a true comeback for either Resistance or Killzone, quite honestly. I think Sony needs to get itself a high quality FPS in its first party lineup to cover its bases.
I need a new game in this series I love it so much it's the only FPS franchise I've ever cared about I love the universe
@MFTWrecks Resistence and Killzone had really fun MP modes alongside the good campaign. I especially like KZ and its different approach to FPS where you felt the heft of the guns. The classes were interesting and well balanced and I used to love that little 'chirp' sound that came with a kill.
Resistance was great to on PS3. 40 player sniper-rifle matches were so much fun and not in a quick-scope COD way 😊
I literally just said this on the Rejected Days Gone 2 article you guys just did: An Open World Resistance sounds incredible, and if Insomniac Games does not want to continue the series (for now), then I think Bend Studio would have been a great choice after they did quite a good job with Resistance Retribution on the PSP.
Not only that but they could have used the Days Gone world they created and just incorporate a lot of that Resistance design to it.
☝🏻I concur with all the posts on here ... Sony almost seem to have a 3rd person obsession.
I was thinking of something more along the lines of Metro Exodus but Resistance style but this sounds like it could have been cool as well.
I generally don't care for First-Person Shooters, but there was always something special about the Resistance series that managed to grab and hold my attention, but even to this day I still don't know what is, I just love the Resistance series, and I'm dying for it to make a comeback.
Let's get #RetributionForResistance trending on PlayStation', Bend Studios & Insomniac Game's Twitter!
I've only just started collecting the old Resistance and Killzone games recently.
I'll get in to inFamous after that.
Of all of Sony's "dormant" franchises that we've heard nothing about recently, I get the feeling these are the three that might not be quite done yet.
So people from Days Gone studio are mad because everyone made fun of the "Days Gones also sold 8 mll" thing and now they are saying everything Sony cancels from them was going to be great? Please 😂
I loved Resistence 3 and would have preferred another game in a similar style. Not everything needs to be open world.
I think Resistence could come back one day, presumably to help fill the gap left by the absence of Doom and co on Playstation- assuming that those franchises are now locked to xbox
i would love to see a return to some of these series though including killzone , and resistance.
I reckon a good Resistance or Killzone will do wonders for Sony. No reason it can't be the platform's answer to Halo surely?
While I do not like the sound of an open world Resistance game at all, I’m just not into open world games in general, there are not many other franchises I would like to see return more than Resistance. I would happily settle for a remastered trilogy similar to Mass Effect.
I'd enjoy a new Resistance... but not an open world one. Make it like the first two (never played the third).
Could have been what Metro Exodus wanted to be.
That game was such a bummer. Love these settings, but it was so restricted, stiff, terrible voice acting/ story, no reward for exploring and frankly, the exploring was a chore anyway.
Curious what they'll make though, cause Days Gone was pretty solid
PlayStation need an exclusive FPS again, it’s been FAAARRRRRR to long since they’ve had one.
original trilogy veteran here cant wait to play this. i still have my original discs il add this to them.
I played all the Resistance game's brilliant games. Remake the originals & reboot the sires, I can only dream.
yeah yeah, it was my idea, remember Insomniac i wrote to you saying this three years ago.
it's in 2052 almost a century after the war was over, and capilli grand son is the protagonist.
well am proud that at least some reads my emails again after guerilla reads it and made killzone mercenary and shadow fall with lot of my ideas.
Hell no to open world, Resistance 3 was perfect. It's a shame nore people didn't play it, but a big NO to open world.
