Update: As previously promised, in-the-know industry observer Tom Henderson has published a YouTube video on PlayStation's next presentation. Drawing on a mixture of inside sources and educated guesses, he hypothesises that the next Sony livestream will take place in early February, potentially as soon as 3rd February, as the company pairs a big Horizon Forbidden West blowout with a handful of other games, like the upcoming Sifu.
Henderson speculates that a Hogwarts Legacy update could be due, and that there could be a second PlayStation presentation in March, where Sony may show off hardware like PSVR2 as well as other upcoming games, like God of War Ragnarok. It all seems reasonable to us, and means there may be a lot to look forward to over the next couple of months.
In the meantime, of course, Sony has yet to explicitly announce anything, and it's honestly unlikely to confirm any livestream dates until much closer to their air date.
Original Story: Rumourmonger Tom Henderson, a freelancer at a number of major websites, reckons that a big PlayStation presentation is right around the corner. According to the scribe – who’s accurately leaked a handful of stories in the past – “the next Sony event looks like it could be in February based on this month’s media events and past PlayStation dates”.
It’s not entirely clear whether Henderson has inside sources on this, or whether he’s making an educated guess. We contacted him and he told us it’s a mixture of both, and he’ll share a full video with more information soon. In the meantime, he added: “It'll probably be State of Play, but it has the potential to be a pretty big one in my opinion.” Make of that what you will.
This doesn’t seem like a particularly outlandish claim to us. Sony will want at least one more Horizon Forbidden West blowout before 18th February, and with Gran Turismo 7’s release right behind it the timing makes sense for some kind of promotional livestream. We’re always hungry for new PlayStation news, so this is a rumour we hope comes true.

@lolwhatno agreed, I’d really love to see what some of the other first parties are up to (beyond HFW, GoW: R and Insomniac).
the way he says it sounds more like pattern based speculation instead of insider knowledge tbh.
Hell yeah, another 3000 trailers for games tht will come out a week later
It will probably be another event filled with boring realistic AAA 3rd party shooter games
Something I saw recently regarding a game called Boundary: "
That said, we do want to leave things on a high note as we are about 90% locked in for a major gaming event coming this February 2022 on one of the world's largest platforms."
That sounds like they could be showing something at a PlayStation event.
Maybe they'll reveal PlayStation Sparticus?
WOW that leaker should have the title ‘ Captain Obvious’ …. That was about as easy to predict as saying ‘ the sun will come up tomorrow’
Hopefully a full PSVR2 reveal and more.
Not to over hype but I think it’s going to be really big, I reckon we’ll get something on gow ragnarok, horizon, FF16 and maybe Naughty dogs new project/projects
@stu123 likely revealed in April/May…perhaps as late as the Summer Gamesfest. I hope it’s revealed earlier.
Hope for a showcase, but unless its the psvr2 event, it will more likely be a state of play imo, with a deep dive into gran turismo 7
Square did say we will get FF 16 news in the spring though..
I love the rumour dartboard. State of Play, Nintendo Direct, Switch Pro, PS5 Slim, Metal Gear Solid Remake, etc etc. Which one will the dart hit next week?
When one does appear they just get replaced with the next white whale.
After watching (even with lowered expectations) the last showcase I shan't be watching this one live.
I'll be here the following day to catch up on the news instead.
@lolwhatno If you get in the shower and turn it on, you're likely to get wet
@Milt go play on Nintendo consoles if you hate realistic shooters.
@lolwhatno I'd say that
a) you'd expect an archer to have asymmetric muscle mass and that could be the weaker arm,
b) given the activities we see her perform you'd expect it to be pretty lean, wiry muscle, like a long distance runner,
c) it's generally accuracy and tactics that Aloy employs, rather than brute force,
So I'd say it's fine. Could maybe show a bit more definition, but the amount of muscle mass isn't out the the realms of realism.
@lolwhatno that's a fair perspective, personally though I would like to see something about factions 2. I feel like that's something the ps5 is missing, a pick up and play style game that I can return to over and over during the quite periods between the big hits, gran turismo could be that game for a lot of people but personally I'm not fussed on racing Sims (though I do love arcade racers)
I have little optimism that something will be shown that truly has me excited if there's even something to show. Granted, I don't have optimism for many aspects of the world as of late. The days of many incredible games to choose from have ended for me and PS5 will be the last hardware I buy at launch.
@lolwhatno i'm of the same opinion; i don't need more hype for the games that are almost out (GOW, HFW, etc). what i'm really interested in is what hasn't been officially announced. give me something to look forward to!
PSVR 2!!! Show us our new hats!
@Uncharted2007 i'm with you on this. if 2021 taught me anything, it's that i need to manage my own expectations and not to get too excited about speculation or rumors
@Snake_V5 lol
Bubsy VR, calling it right now.
@4kgk2 I have a Nintendo console but i rather stick with both PS5 and Switch
Sucker punch and bend studio new game will be welcome.word up son
There’s a countdown timer on the Abandoned website leading up to February 1st. Say what you will about that project, but it’s clearly something Sony is invested in. Wouldn’t be surprised if whatever is next for that is part of a greater announcement.
That said, looking forward to seeing what is actually coming in 2022 with some firm release dates. Give me Ghostwire, Stray, and Hogwarts Legacy… and maybe a surprise! 😄
@Saucymonk I take it you don't know what that is.
If this rumor is true then theres a high chance of the rumored project spartacus gets announced at some point during the event! I mean it does make sense cause its rumored to be released during spring so maybe! We could also see some updates on Elden Ring,Ragnarok, etc! Who knows, patience is key!
@somnambulance i hoping for some hogwarts news cause we haven't seen any new gameplay since 2 years ago! Im not getting my hopes up tbh!
I heard a while back that they would do an HFW SoP. Whether they want Gran Turismo 7 to be a part of it I'm not sure. I can see them doing separate shows.
It sounds like a guess, based on patterns, on past information.
Alas, if a show will happen, i hope they don't share any more trailers and details of Horizon FW. The game launches soon, let the reviews carry on the hype, and us, the players, discover the game for ourselves.
We'd be much more interested in info on new games and features. How about that Bloodborne 2? How about the promised VRR that is still nowhere to be seen?
It will prob just be a state of play and while i enjoy those based on tempering my expectations, im not expecting anything 'big' whatsoever: maybe a couple timed exclusive second-party and a long play of GT7 or Ragnarok. No big reveals incoming...
Look, I still remember the 2020 cycle where we were just looking for scraps on PS5 info, and we got one of these rumors every other week. Am I excited for the potential? Yes. But I'm not gonna hold my breath
Sony has done a SoP before every big release of theirs for a while now, so, yeah it’s very likely.
There’s Discord, PS Now/Plus merge, Horzion, Gran Turismo and GOW and announcements on what will follow these games due.
Yeah; I’d take a pretty good bet we’re due a State of Play/large event sometime soon and I, for one, cannot wait.
Off topic but wasn't Guerilla games meant to be working on an online horizon game/mode?
If so then we could expect a multiplayer mode added to the game after launch like with ghost of tsushima
‘accurately leaked a handful of stories in the past’
The times he (the BF expert) said BF2042 would be next gen only and it would be in GamePass?
😅
But, sure, we can predict a state of play at some point. Sounds like something reasonable to do for an ‘insider’ Twitter personality.
I refused to get excited to see a State of Play anymore, the last one was a trash fire.
Crazy thought, a release date for Little Devil Inside....I know it's too much to ask. If it focuses on Horizon then its wasted time. Once I know I'm getting a game I stop watching trailers, just like movies.
Could we get a PS5 VRR update tho???
@psnisawesome23 According to some rumors, it’s closer than we all think. It’s apparently in the localization section of development, so that’s pretty promising. With there being a third Fantastic Beasts film set for release in April and the other Potter themed media events that happened earlier this year, don’t be surprised if the game releases far sooner than expected. According to a Nvidea “leak,” it’s rumored to have a potential release date of March 8th, which I don’t honestly believe. Other leaks suggest a late spring, early summer release, and yet another round of leaks simply states Q3. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the game will be with us soon. The days of long drawn out teases have given way to shadows and hints and waiting while leakers bait and bet on the trust of a fanbase. It’s not unusual now for AAA dev to announce a release date for a high profile game weeks before release now.
I would not be surprised if an event comes down the pipeline and all of a sudden we know all the release dates for the big games from February to E3 season or more in one swoop. I’m anticipating that Ghostwire and Hogwarts in particular are fairly soon, based on how far they are into development. It seems GoW may be sooner than people think, as well.
I’m just not into Horizon, the style of it does nothing for me. Could be wrong, but if it’s like the first I’ll buy it months later on the cheap and play a quarter way through it in the meantime she can take her brolly and Mary Poppins off of my conscience
Epic news if true, but I hope it covers games we don't have trailers or release dates for already.
I do wish that Sony would stop with these State of Play events just for one game, especially when we've already seen the game and gameplay too. At the end of the day if people are interested in the game, there interested. If people are going to buy it, there going to buy it regardless.
I'd rather these events focus and show new things instead. How many times have we seen Horizon 2, quite a few times now. To me this is just such a waste, such a waste of these events.
I've seen enough of Horizon 2. I'm gonna play it, don't need to see anymore. Going dark in...
Don't need to see anything else on Horizon except a few reviews scores/cliffnotes to check it's a good day 1 play and not a stinker.
Would MUCH prefer to see other titles.
I love Horizon, and am super hyped for forbidden west, but i don't feel it needs another state of play, having already had one.
Whilst i am not excited about gran turismo 7 as i don't like racing games, that probably needs one more.
Very interested in more hogwarts news though. Very excited for that one. Hopefully final fantasy 16 shows up at one of these
Please Sony, no more deep dives or whatever you want to call these. Less is more! I totally loved Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us 2, but the 15 minute state of plays got me less excited. Better have a tight 3 minute gameplay overview trailer to give people an overall sense of the game.
I want a state of play that is a 30-45 minute trailer reel with a Gospel wide array of things to look forward to, even if not everything is a AAA game.
Hope so! We need to get the hype train moving!
This year will be a banger, starting with february jam packed
I love that Guerilla Games helps other studios and am very excited to see the improvements they have made.
Please give Hogwarts as much time as possible - this is one game that has so much potential, please don't rush it and mess this up.
I'm in the same boat as everyone else: I think we've seen enough of HFW and I'm so excited to play it. I'll probably stop myself from watching more because I love to be surprised by things in the game and HFW seems to promise a lot of that.
However, I think the marketing campaign for the game simply demands a show like this near its release, that's how it's always been. Which is usually unnecessary.
Not a chance PSVR2 is shown in March. I don’t see it. Too early and still too many games getting the attention.
Well that’s my ‘speculation’ but I don’t like speculation. I prefer facts haha
While it sounds feasible (both of them) I don't think the first one will be on February 3rd because Sony times their events to make sure Nintendo Direct doesn't take away attention and given nothing 1st party Nintendo has a release date after January 28th it's likely that there's a Direct on February 2nd/3rd.
The second event I could see being March 3rd given Sony had a pattern last year where the day before a 1st party release there'd be a State of Play for the next game (e.g. Ratchet & Clank State of Play the day before Returnal launched, HFW State of Play the day before Ratchet & Clank launched).
EDIT: Nintendo just announced that Kirby and the Forgotten Land releases March 25th so there's probably no Direct before March/April hence February 3rd would be free for a State of Play.
