Sony first-party London Studio is continuing to staff up for its PlayStation 5 online game. We’ve known about production on this project for quite some time now, as it’s been recruiting since the release of Blood & Truth for PSVR. While many had expected it to continue its work in virtual reality with PSVR2, it seems like the UK-based outfit is very much all-in on whatever this multiplayer experience is.
A senior character artist position makes reference to a “wide range of characters, skins, creatures, weapons, and gear”, but there are few clues outside of this. It seems like a big undertaking, though, with one recruitment post referring to “a unique opportunity to be at the heart of crafting and bringing to life the next PlayStation icon/s”.
There does seem to be a concerted effort under Hermen Hulst for PlayStation Studios to create more online multiplayer games. We know that Naughty Dog is working on a standalone multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe, while Guerrilla Games is also believed to be quietly beavering away on some kind of first-person shooter.
The platform holder has also signed publishing deals with the likes of Firewalk and Deviation Games, while a new Twisted Metal is purportedly in production at Firesprite as well. The success of games like Fortnite, and also retention of PS Plus subscribers, will likely be influencing its decision to make more online multiplayer games.
It’ll be interesting to see what London Studio is cooking here, though – especially when you consider it was one of Sony’s most experienced virtual reality developers. Assigning it work on PSVR2 would have been a real boon to the headset, but it’s decided to explore this online project instead.

Getaway please Sony
Online?....(holds up crucifix)
I'd like Sony do remake Home, make it a hub to meet friends and launch games from, keep it relevant, don't turn it into Westfield Shopping centre, and this time give it proper support.
I know what it is. The halo, cod, doom, fallout, overwatch and Wolfenstein killer. All in one package hahahaha.
I bet sony is getting like 3 AAA fps games (Plus factions 2) because it's not going to be ez pz like last gen. Do they have the best devs? On single player, absolutely. On multiplayer? They're one of the worst honestly.
This will be good.
@Keyblade-Dan I agree, love my single player games. The reality is all the popular games are online bar a few holdouts. Which is disappointing but it is what it is.
"Whatever those other guys are doing that makes money, let's do it too!"
Welcome to the beginning of the real PlayStation by Jim Ryan.... A whole generation of chasing the trends awaits, featuring special guest: Yves Guillemot!
Unless it's the revival of Home, I really don't care about any multiplayer games from Sony.
Always interested in new games from new studios, even tho it’s multiplayer games-will still keep an eye on them. Considering the Activision buyout. I’m hoping that we’ll start seeing more new shooters games , imo cod is only relevant in sales-the games have been mediocre for a very long time. Will also be interesting to see how ea handles battlefield going forwards. If cod stops being on Ps5 in the future-maybe that’ll give ea a kick in the ass to sort battlefield out properly.
“Forever and ever, we’re gonna be together..forever and ever, we’re gonna be, gonna be.” I can hear it coming back now 😩
@LightningLeader those things are not mutually exclusive to do.
I don't hate mp (like many people here do) and I had fun with mp games from Sony in the past like Warhawk, I just hope they don't focus only on mp in these upcoming years.
Considering the upcoming line up I doubt it but still...
@RevGaming the last of us mp was great
Itll be 3rd person set in suburbia with cockernees and all the voices provided by Danny Dyer
@LightningLeader that's easy ,do what they've been doing for years, only more,I really don't know what the fuss is about ,none of the studios ms has bought are anywhere near the quality of sonys.
@themcnoisy yeah but all the good games are single player ,mp bores me to tears ,same thing over and over
Sony getting more into online games is a good thing for variety though I'm not looking forward to the day when "[insert franchise] is dead without battle royale" comments seep into the PS community.
@vapidwolf1 my fav mp last gen
I'm not bothered about online games, prefer single player games. I wish they'd do a Getaway 3.
Online?....no thank you.
The artist job description to make "creatures" makes it sounds like a sci-fi or fantasy setting to me, so I don't think it'll be anything like Getaway or Blood & Truth.
Whatever it is, I hope it will have the option to play it in VR... Blood & Truth is awesome!
Great... more online games coming from Sony in the future, sigh 🙄. Thats what...four mp games coming in the future? The Jim Ryan effect is coming.
@themcnoisy ""The reality is all the popular games are online bar a few holdouts"
Popularity is overrated. I like a game that I can play thoroughly, enjoy and move on, not something that treats my playtime like a second job.
@riceNpea PlayStation Home on PSVR2 is a system seller for me.
@NomNom that would be great!
@NomNom While a Playstation Home on PSVR2 would be cool... It gonna end up being compared to heavily to something like VRChat which is won't stand a chance against straightly due to freedom of VRChat.
Why do people think online means competitive multiplayer only?
@BoyoArdee
No idea.
But to be fair, Sony is sorely lacking in internal competitive multiplayer games.
Come on Sony. Give us a new Killzone. Some of the best multiplayer you’d ever find on a console.
Just make sure it has third pers perspective option.
No fan at all of FPS only
(Sigh) It's comment sections like these that really makes me believe none of you seem to know what you truly want.
They amount of people bellyaching that 'Sony needs more Multiplayer Games' but also claim to want 'Those Single-Player Story-Driven Games' and now that Sony are attempting to cater more to both camps, somehow Sony are STILL in the wrong.
Seriously WHY does Sony NEED Multiplayer Games? Why do they need to follow this tired trend? The Gaming Industry has too much of that copy-and-paste Multiplayer crap already. Instead of expecting Sony to get onboard with the beaten-to-death Multiplayer train that plagues this industry, people should be demanding that Developers be making more Single-Player Story-Driven Experiences, but no one does.
PlayStation's BIGGEST strength is currently the Gaming Industry's BIGGEST weakness; Single-Player Story-Driven Games, very few Developers are actively trying to keep Single-Player Story-Driven games alive.
Every year the amount of quality Single-Player Story-Driven games decreases, because Developers are taking the easy route and making just another boring, effortless, uninspired, unoriginal, cheaply-made Copy-and-Paste Multiplayer Games, oh yeah really pushing the industry forward by doing the exact same thing as every other Tom, Dick & Harry..
I admit it would be interesting to have something like Home to open on PlayStation from time to time. It is a point that I brought on comments before - that PlayStation should work towards giving its users more meaningfull ways to interact between them. Imagine, for example, forming a team in a game like Home to play a match in Ghost of Tsushima Legends. It would add a extra layer of meaningfulness to the team you formed and the match played. Each game would have its own "room" or "space" that could be a generic/default place or customized by the game developer (like Twitch give a page for each game at the so called "Categories"), and players could explore and seamless access the game's multiplayer modes from that space or just interact with others players for a moment. A product like that would give PlayStation a lot of options to integrate services like the "new PS Plus", Discord, the recently announded PlayStation Tournaments and others.
