Square Enix has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tomb Raider series for a while now, bringing the heroine to the likes of Fortnite and even announcing a cookbook based on the franchise. However, it's collaborations such as this one that really makes the occasion feel a little special. Famous Final Fantasy artist Akihiko Yoshida has shared his take on the Rise of the Tomb Raider boxart as part of the celebrations, and it's quite simply beautiful.
When asked about his interpretation of the boxart, Yoshida spoke of wanting "to use a simple composition to express Lara about to embark on an adventure full of conviction and confidence, strength and mature beauty". As a homage to the original PS1 title, he used the colour of Lara Croft's tank top as the background colour. If you click through this link, the blog post even shares a way of downloading the boxart so you can replace your physical copy's base art with this wonderful variation.
Akihiro Yoshida is credited for his artistic skills in games like Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIV, NieR Automata, and the recent remaster NieR Replicant.
Two other Tomb Raider boxarts have also had variations shared with the community as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations. Pictured above, the Shadow of the Tomb Raider image on the left is by Ross Draws while the Tomb Raider: Legend piece is by Nagu. Both just as impressive.

Not bad, but she looks a bit too skinny imo
@Icey664 skinny women exist you know
That Legend one is pretty sweet
Aloy’s too fat!
Lara Croft’s too skinny!
Abby’s too muscular!
There’s no winning.
I love Tomb Raider. Can't you tell by my avatar?
tomb raider underworld >>>>>>
the legend piece is amazing 🔥remaster the real tomb raider games plz
@jFug i had no idea … it looks like someone from uncharted or something
@nessisonett so true.
It's sad for me to come to realise I'm conditioned enough for my first thought to be 'I wonder what people will complain about?' before I even saw the pictures.
There's bound to be some noise on that cesspool Twitter, they're a vocal minority who get far too much attention. If it happens I hope you can resist giving them any PS.
This boxart looks fantastic. I especially like the Legend one which has a Nier Automata vibe to it I'm drawn to.
@jFug Michael Fassbender is a lucky man!
I quite like all of these covers.
@get2sammyb want to bid a couple of grand on an NFT of them with me?
Huge TR stan. They really haven’t been doing enough to celebrate it if you ask me. Legend Trilogy Remaster? New game announcement? It's been three years and still no word, I don't deserve it. I know they got my last two letters, I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect. And all I wanted was a lousy trailer, something y’all. I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall. Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the fridge now. Oh sh*t I forgot to get some more beers and now we’re all out 😫
Actually they had done new "covers" for every game in the series for the 25th Anniversary. To Square... that apparently was the most they could opt for outside of a TR cook book and a handful of other severely lame ideas.
@BritneyfR_ee
Square does know one thing though
Gamers, they come they go
Saturday through Sunday, Monday
Monday through Sunday yo
Maybe we'll love you one day
Maybe we'll someday grow
'Til then just sit your drunk ass on that f*ckin' runway ho
@Integrity Haha, nah, I'm good I think. Thanks, though! 😂
The other two look kinda like fan art - probably my fault for not knowing those artists, but Yoshida's is just... well just everything he touches is perfection.
Playing the last series for the first time, the first game is an over the top mess.
@Icey664 Why aren’t you complaining that kratos is too ripped and his figure is unobtainable for the average man?
I want tomb raider with yoshida style of artwork and old psone lara personality 😃
I really like the artwork but that is definitely not square's Laura - Square's recent Laura is an absolute psychopath
i'm surprised they haven't announced a new game yet.
@nessisonett ”There’s no winning.”
That sums up the entire world right now. Haha.
Nice art work. Id love to see a remake of the 1st Tomb raider. Just imagine that T-rex not made out of triangles 😂
That Legend one has Gravity Rush vibes. I dig!
I finished Shadow of the Tomb recently to finish off the trilogy, it was a fun game with some amazing set pieces.
It neither of the sequels really hit the heights of the original TR reboot for me and the writers never really got me to care for the characters.
Still it was a fun series and it’s sad that the series never met recent sales expectations, I think that Xbox one exclusivity deal really shot Rise in the foot.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Have you tried Anniversary? Think it was PSP and PS2 only? Works a treat on the Vita.
Really like them. Not enough to replace the cover of my hard copies but they’re still very nice. Hopefully more anniversary stuff gets revealed before they call it a wrap. Loved the rebooted trilogy and would like another title!
@sanderson72 think i had it on wii and ps3. Anniversary was a great Tomb raider game.
Love that in the 21st century to celebrate a gaming (and feminist?) icon’s 25th birthday, the best they could do was a cookbook!
@twitchtvpat one is in the works but nothing official.
I loved Rise Of The Tomb Raider. My fave one out the reboot trilogy.
