We now know that, despite Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, franchises like Call of Duty will continue to release on the PlayStation 5 and PS4. However, there’ll be no mainline Call of Duty game next year anyway, as Bloomberg reports that the publisher has made the decision to delay 2023’s instalment until 2024. To be clear, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sequel by Infinity Ward that’s already been announced will still release later this year as planned – it’s next year’s title that will be taking time off.
If the report is accurate – and it’s Jason Schreier reporting this, who has a strong track record – it’d mark the first time in almost two decades where a new Call of Duty hasn’t launched every year. It’s worth noting that this move is unlikely to be related to Microsoft’s buyout, as that hasn’t cleared regulatory approval yet and Activision is continuing to operate as an independent entity for the time being.
Of course, it doesn’t mean there’ll be no Call of Duty at all. Infinity Ward is planning a strong slate of post-release support for its Modern Warfare follow-up, and a new free-to-play “Warzone experience” will launch at some point during 2023 as well. With all that in the pipeline, this does perhaps feel like an appropriate time for the publisher to reset the clock – especially considering Call of Duty: Vanguard hasn’t quite hit the highs of the series’ past.
In other related news, Call of Duty’s bizarre Attack on Titan crossover has received a new skin today, and the web is ripping it to shreds. As the publisher continues to covet the success of Fortnite, it’s added the anime’s Armored Titan to both Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone, and the results are frankly horrifying. You can check out a trailer through here, but we should probably issue you with a content warning before you click.

Yes! Already I have more optimism for the future of CoD, thanks Microsoft!
Cod about go down hill Microsoft about to make cod like halo infinite that’s why yearly release’s are ending.
Blow that game up and go back to the drawing board.
@Phostachio This decision was made completely independently of Microsoft...

Wow a year off??? Are three studios still rotating on the games?
@Rural-Bandit Not sure if you Nintendo at all, but before January I would've said Pokemon can contest with that 😂
Oh my lord in heaven what an infernal creation that Attack on Titan skin is!
Now thats good coz MW2 will be supported .....
People who don’t play or buy Call of Duty, cheering about something that doesn’t affect them. Same people who slate Vanguard despite it being excellent.
I’m glad Treyarch are getting longer on the game simply because Cold War was absolute dogsh**e. Otherwise, I like my yearly Call of Duty.
Roll on MW2
Holy sh*t that Attack on Titan skin is weird 😂
cod will soon be a service game just like warzone. maybe they will release a campaign once every 3 years as a paid expansion or something... but it is time to move on from yearly releases. can't get away with that anymore with so many games fighting for people's time, not to mention lack of innovation.
@Stragen8
I think this is related to Treyarch. Technically next year is Treyarch’s turn. But they got roped into assisting on Vanguard; they helped with multiplayer and built zombies for Vanguard.
I’m guessing that cut into their development time for their 2023 release and someone at Treyarch finally put their foot down and told Activision that it was impossible to meet their deadline and still put out a quality product.
@Jacko11
Dude Vanguard is awful. And I generally like COD a lot.
Cold War was mediocre. But it wasn’t as bad as Vanguard. Vanguard is horribly unbalanced and the launch was disastrous.
We shall see how IW does this year. I’m hoping they knock it out of the park.
Also, since there is no COD for 2023, for the love of God Activision remaster Black Ops 2. It’s still the best multiplayer COD has ever had. It doesn’t really need much attention; just port the PC version over to consoles (it had higher quality textures than the console version so they look better in 4K) and make sure all the DLC is included.
I’d be the happiest person in the world if they did that.
Good. Enough already. If i want a call of doody I'll order a Burrito supreme from taco Bell.
Good it needs a break and hopefully this will give it a chance to go back to being the series I once loved back in the day.
good luck reviving a dead horse ; people been saying to do this for only about a decade
@TheRedComet The last good COD game to many
@Jacko11 That’s a wild a opinion you got there about vanguard . but i guess some people can tolerate the smell of ***** better than others
@nomither6 @TheRedComet you’re crazy if you think Vanguard is bad. Online is solid, gameplay is much more MW 2019 than Cold War garbage. Great selection of maps granted a couple duds, but the weapons are excellent too.
Also not sure what the disastrous launch is in regards too as I had zero issues at launch.
I’m talking specifically multiplayer - campaign was garbage in both Cold War and Vanguard
Oh no!! Anyway... (yup, that's all I have to say)
The CoD bros are gonna starve. Maybe they'll actually try different games for once.
@TheRedComet I second that!
Good move....about time
I’m sure there will at least be a remaster of Modern Warfare 3 next year. They did the first two, makes sense to do the third.
@Porco considering that COD is still the best selling game every year, they most certainly can get away with releasing a new game every year. At the moment, they choose not to, but not because they can't. It's not like Assassin's Creed that was struggling to sell and took a much needed break.
@nomither6 "dead horse". The best selling game of 2021 is a dead horse.
Alright enough internet for today.
I believe it's exactly what this series needs, release every two years, minimum.
@Rural-Bandit "No series in the history of video games needs a year break more than call of duty."
Any EA Sports title: hold my beer.
Madden has come out EVERY year since 1990 that's 32 years, FIFA since '93. COD has only been coming out annually for 17 years by comparison, since 2005.
Honestly these would do better to sell a team roster/shirts update each year and concentrate on bigger improvements every 2-3 years rather than tiny iterative changes. At least COD has a new campaign or new multiplayer + maps each year.
We got enough Call of Duty it is about time for other games from Activision Blizzard to shine even a revival of dead or dormant games.
COD isnt dead people the insane expected profit cant be maintained so the investors will get mad. Even with all the monetization and horrible pratices it wont be enough. Who knows maybe MS will be a good thing not for the industry but for the workers. One company that already printed money will become a new Google, Apple, Amazon companies bigger then countries its not looking good for the consumer.
@naruball You know investors always want more that the problem a healthy company isnt what they want anymore they want all the money. They dont even care what damage they will do. I love great looking games but with all the costs i think its almost impossible to make it work people all see the profits but not all misery they create.
Already??? Once Microsoft buys something it starts to die RIP COD(& Crash & Spyro & all the rest)
Never into FPS shooter. But I wonder those who buy COD every year, what make you buy it yearly. I know they rinse and repeat the setting (historical, future etc) but personally the gameplay is just basically a minor tweak. Loads of people buy it annually is a surprise to me. Do you guys buy it because most online community are most active in the newest game?
@Rural-Bandit COD: Vanguard and COD: BO Cold War were the #1 & #2 best selling games in 2021 so if they can do it why not EA sports?
@Brydontk Since when was Pokemon on a yearly release schedule for their titles?
@themightyant probably a harder sell to investors when licences are involved like they are with sports games. They need to churn them out. I do think dlc packs would be better though than buying the whole game again.
@MFTWrecks Since 2008 sort of. They took two gap years but they've almost consistently released a new game every year
EDIT:Scratch that. Apparently since inception they've been aiming for annual releases with some games having a gap year
@Brydontk And that not even counting that some years we receive 3 or 4 new pokemon game.
@naruball you and that one upvoter missed the point .
@nomither6 sure, buddy.
@Flaming_Kaiser I know what you mean. It's just never enough with investors, is it? They tend to ruin games with their decisions.
@naruball don’t blame me . 🤷
@Jacko11 yeah I can't stop playing vanguard, love it.
Have a back log of quality games building, but always find myself wanting to play vanguard each day!
Well and truly hooked in.
My mate persuaded me to trial bf2042 but just didn't click with me at all, but got me in the mood for a decent online fps. So bought cod a month or 2 back and haven't put it down since.
About time...I hope it gets delayed another year on top of this.
