Guerrilla Games has just released a new patch for Horizon Forbidden West. Update 1.05 is now available to download on both PlayStation 5 and PS4, and it makes a long list of fixes. While there are still some issues outstanding the developer is aware of, this should go a long way in improving the experience for players. By the way, if you are playing the game, be sure to stop by our Horizon Forbidden West guide.
Anyway, lots of common problems and quirks have been addressed here. An issue with HDR "image oversharpening" is fixed with this patch, for example. One issue we encountered during the review process was Aloy and NPCs having some odd facial animations, like eyes staring in a different direction — this has also been sorted.
Other problems solved in this update include instances of getting stuck in geometry, data streaming bugs, progression blocks, crashes, and more. See below for the full patch notes:
Main Quests
- Fixed an issue in main quest ‘Reach for the Stars’ where reloading a certain auto-save after completing the first quest could block progression.
- Fixed an issue during interlude ‘The Eye of the Earth’ where Aloy could fall out of the world after skipping a cinematic.
- Fixed an issue in main quest ‘Cradle of Echoes’ where Varl would wander off on a reload from save.
- Fixed an issue in main quest ‘The Sea of Sands’ affecting several grapple points.
Side Quests and Errands
- Fixed an issue in side quest ‘Blood Choke’ where Atekka would appear to fall out of the sky.
- Fixed a progression issue in side quest ‘In The Fog’ related to fast travel during the quest.
- Fixed an issue in errand quest ‘Night of Lights’ where a pullable box could get stuck and block the quest progression.
World activities
- Fixed an issue where Relic Ruin: The Daunt could not be started in certain circumstances.
- Fixed an issue in salvage contract The Greenswell: Plowhorn and the Plants where an optional objective could not be completed if the required item was sent to the player stash.
- A rogue Tallneck near The Sand of the Sentinels that would sometimes change the direction of its route has been disciplined.
Gameplay fixes
- The Second Chance skill should now work correctly.
- Fixed an issue where the camera had an unintended position when using certain weapon techniques.
General fixes
- Image oversharpening in HDR mode has been corrected.
- Fixed an issue where some settlements would stream in, then stream out in certain circumstances.
- Fixed an issue where the HUD would flicker when the player performs a loot action.
- Fixed an issue where rapidly opening and closing the map could cause graphical anomalies.
- Fixed an issue where Aloy's animation would sometimes jitter rapidly when climbing after picking up a plant has been fixed.
- Fixed a global issue where the direction of Aloy's gaze, or that of certain NPCs, was incorrect.
- Fixed several instances where Aloy, NPCs or enemies could get stuck in geometry.
- Fixed an issue where roads and icons on the map would sometimes appear with a delay.
- Fixed several streaming issues and unintended loading screens.
- NPCs that seemed to suffer from insomnia and would gather in large groups at night in settlements should act more naturally now.
- Petra will no longer teleport into her seat inside the Chainscrape brewery if followed immediately after the initial conversation with her.
Crash fixes
- Fixed several crashes.
Other
- Various performance improvements.
- Various other minor fixes and cosmetic improvements.
The update itself is just over 450MB in size, so get it downloaded and installed to fix all the above. Again, Guerrilla is aware of Forbidden West's visual issues such as shimmering when moving the camera, and is actively working on more fixes. Patch 1.05 will do wonderfully for now, though.

"Fixed a global issue where the direction of Aloy's gaze, or that of certain NPCs, was incorrect."
Good, sometimes during dialoges I was really wondering where Aloy/the NPCs are looking at
I'm playing on PS4 and i really enjoy 😍😍😍
Glad to hear there are fixes for those suffering from them but honestly haven't had any major issues yet in 20+ hours.
Great to see Guerrilla getting this out nice and quick! No issues for me so far, incredible game..
I have played 15 hours and not a single problem for me.
Couldn't help but laugh at this patch note:
>NPCs that seemed to suffer from insomnia and would gather in large groups at night in settlements should act more naturally now.
Happy to see the HDR issue seems to be fixed.
Haven't had much issue overall aside from abrupt pop in. Like the intro credits. I know it's in real time which is awesome, but had a moment where Aloy was in a white void and then BAM! a mountain range appeared xD
(The SSD is still the same one built into the PS5 system, if anyone thinks it may be due to a slower expanded SSD)
Tonight after work will be another 20mins of flicking back and forth between resolution and performance modes to see the differences
15 hours in and no serious issues so far. Kudos to Guerrilla for getting this out quick!
@themightyant Same here - nearly 40 hours in and nothing I'd report as a bug.
Glad to see there's these fixes though as I'd wish everyone to enjoy the game the way I have
Nice to see some of the issues i’ve had listed here.
Hopefully they can fix the weird blur effect on Aloy’s skirt/outfit when in Photo Mode. Really ruined some photo opportunities so far though i’m glad I put the game down cause of glitches so early into the game.
Means it’ll be a smoother experience going forward 🤞🏻
@Jacko11 It's listed in the "known issues" section so they'll probably fix it soon.
Not many issues my side, few glitches here and there but nothing too major. None the less, the Dev has been quick to address the issues noted so hats off.
"A rogue Tallneck near The Sand of the Sentinels that would sometimes change the direction of its route has been disciplined."
I hope they've not been too rough on the Tallneck, poor thing just got a big bored
Oh damn that enemies getting stuck one i just managed to record it before patch happened. I can post the clip if anyone cares to see it lol. I charge at the rock and just smack heavy attacks LOL
For sure that hud flicker on loot pick up was starting to really annoy me. Overall a very good patch I’d say.
Am absolutely loving this. Am playing in resolution mode and it is absolutely spectacular. Have really adjusted to the 30fps. I’ve been back to performance mode a few times but it just doesn’t quite cut it compared to resolution mode. I’m not massively far into the game, have only just got to the first tall neck but I haven’t ran into a single problem yet so patches such as this are most welcome!
No quest related issues for me so far (luckily), but the only thing that kinda bothers me is that every time I open the map it takes 2 or 3 seconds to load all the icons.. I'm on base PS4 by the way so I guess that's kinda understandable? Anyways.. great game!
Like others have said, it's great that they got a fairly meaty patch out so quickly.
The biggest issue I've experienced is the horrible shimmering in Favor Performance mode, so hopefully they manage to figure that out soon. Otherwise it's been a fairly clean experience.
Just another example of why day 1 purchases don't make sense.
Even if you don't want to wait for a sale, wait a few weeks for crap like this to be fixed.
@MarkMarky it’s far away from being crap.
You can always concern about bugs and additional patches, but then feel free to name one single larger (open world) game from the last years without flaws in the first months.
Nobody threats you to play or purchase the game, not day-1 neither later. You only push yourself to do so, to be on the hype train on social media. But then don’t be concerned about any bugs or patches.
When you concern so heavily about single bugs then you don’t have any clue about the complexity of game development.
I've done the stuck in geometry thing a bunch, but that's my fault for trying to dive roll through every crack I see.
I’ve noticed a few minor things here and there, nothing major really. Climbing is still an ongoing challenge but I don’t think that’s a bug 😫
I did have one bug at the very start of the game (in the prologue) - you have to inspect a downed machine and then collect some wood to craft some arrows. But I had already collected all the wood in the area so it wouldn’t let me interact with the downed machine. A quick restart of the last autosave resolved it.
Also, (not a bug) but they keep introducing side characters like I’m supposed to know who they are. Haven’t a clue 🤷 I’m assuming they’re from the first game and Frozen Wilds but it’s been so long since I played them. Aloy seems happy to see them though, which is nice 🤪
I wasn’t sure if I was enjoying the story as much as the first game but something clicked for me last night. I’ve just made it to the third area of the map. Can’t wait to play more later 😁
I watched HDTV Test's YouTube video on the HDR problems last night. Will have to keep an eye out for an update, of he does one.
Looks like performance mode might take a bit longer to fix but it's basically unusable for me, personally.
But they haven't fixed a bug where the game can respawn you in a totally different location that you haven't even been to yet, that's even inaccessible to you at your stage in the story, as far as I know. I never had anything like this in Cyberpunk 2077 or even any Bethesda game.

@Voltan oh i’d missed that!! Good stuff, thanks 🙌🏻
"Fixed several streaming issues and unintended loading screens."
My screen would sometimes just go black for a second during transitions to new areas or starting new missions. I wonder if this fixes that.
Bored Tallneck's that want to see different scenery matter too ya know!
I'm really glad this patch addresses a lot of these issues. I noticed quite a few of them the last few nights. The eyes drifting and oversharpening with HDR drove me nuts.
Next thing I hope they fix is the weird stutter every time the camera cuts during cutscenes and dialogue. That really bugs the absolute hell out of me.
The only issue I've experienced so far in almost 10hrs is things popping into frame
@KilloWertz It's terrible, isn't it? I never, ever sacrifice framerates for resolution, but found that incredibly distracting, so playing on resolution mode until that's fixed.
@MarkMarky yah this game is a far cry away from being an example of why one should avoid day one purchases. The game overall runs great, this is no Unfinished garbage cyberpunk.
@Deadlyblack
My biggest issue has been the photo mode blur effect on Aloy’s lower half.
This update doesn’t cover that, but I’m enjoying the game so much that I don’t care.
I am glad the eyes are being fixed. I had a cutscene last night where I felt like Aloy was breaking the fourth wall because she was staring directly at me instead of the character she was talking to lol.
@KundaliniRising333
I agree. The game actually works as it’s intended to.
Cyberpunk’s original release was busted. The game didn’t work.
Credits to Guerilla... but again, why has this not been tested enough before the release or before doing a day one patch??? Seriously all the day one gamers are the beta testers again. Thank you. The shimmering in performance mode makes me almost selling the game because I cannot play in 30FPS. Thats my personal problem, but it is like it is. In quality mode, the overexposure and oversharpening is cruel besides the 30FPS to me too. I will give it another go this evening with the 1.05 patch. On the other side cyberpunk PS5 version sucked me in that hard that I didn´t feel to playing forbidden west. I waited 14 month for it you all know why... never played the PS4 version. First world problems I know... GT7 next week.
@TheRedComet "I am glad the eyes are being fixed. I had a cutscene last night where I felt like Aloy was breaking the fourth wall because she was staring directly at me instead of the character she was talking to lol."
laughed hard thanks
About 10 hours played so far, and can’t say I’ve had any issues. Good to see the devs are all over teething issues 👍
38 hours in and I'm now just before the final Main Quest. What a legendary game and experience this was!
I have one major complaint though...two mounts in the game are incredibly slow...give us a turbo mode lol
I hope the geometry collision fixes don't thwart my attempts to break into areas I'm not supposed to be. This game is so fun to break.
They've disciplined a tallneck , poor guy
@Pleasance I jumped over the wall of one of the settlements that it wouldn't let me enter but it just spawned me back at the entrance & the NPC told me to go away lol
I’m still experiencing problems with jumping. While doing those jumps where Aloy has to reach out with her hand she jumps in a different direction or just falls. I’m playing on ps4 btw.
@Would_you_kindly Haha, I might have tried that same settlement. Though I got past the barrier to a Carja camp from an early sidequest. Managed to unlock the campfire up the mountain past it, which made for a pretty quick quest once I was actually supposed to be there.
Level 41, Almost at the story end and not had one single problem with the game, Update for me on PS4 is 1.6 gb.
@DrClayman It definitely is. It's unusual for PlayStation Studios games not to be completely free of any major issues at launch, but it seems that not being able to work like they normally would because of COVID is still taking it's toll so to speak.
I'll likely continue to try to push through it now in Favor Performance mode as it still looks pretty good otherwise and I heard the shimmering gets better once you get deeper into the game (I'm still pretty early in the game and about to finish The Embassy).
I'm still having a blast with the game despite what I've said. Shimmering doesn't change the fact that it's a great game and a big leap from the original imo.
@KilloWertz Yeah, 100% loving the game. As bad as that shimerring issue is, and a lot of jankiness tbh, it doesn't take away from how good the game is. Even the 30fps mode, which I struggle sometimes with in other games, is rock solid and well handled in terms of motion blur and effects to make it less jarring.
Horizon on PS5 has, LITERALLY, been playing worst since the update for me.
I have quick flickers and loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong loads to fast points, where I literally have to close out the game and restart.
WTF Sony?????
Not had any issues, rock solid frame rate even in very busy fights like what DF reported, not seen or notices any pop in either. Only issue I had was I tried to get over a wall to area not yet open and managed to get stuck.
@Jacko11 tip from one of the other was turn off the motion blur before you got to photo mode helps.
I’ve been playing Days gone. Which feels so good to play. I purchased HFB and started it. And the control and feel of the game felt so bad I just quit. I don’t remember the first game feeling that bad to control. This was before the patch though so hopefully this helps. Bc I found it unplayable. I really want to play this game but only it doesn’t feel like that.
@InvaderJim I’ll definitely give that a try, good man!
Happy to see that they are still actively patching, advantage to being a PS Studios exclusive.
