Update: A press release expands on Netflix's BioShock announcement, confirming that the project will be produced by 2K and Vertigo Entertainment of The LEGO Movie fame.
“Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today,” said Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick. “We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world. 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.”
Original Story: Netflix is making a movie based on BioShock, and is asking that fans kindly stay tuned. Netflix Geeked confirmed the crossover on its Twitter account earlier today, stating: “Netflix, 2K Games, and Take-Two Interactive are partnering to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.”
It used artwork of a Big Daddy to accompany the post, but the language in the tweet suggests that elements of BioShock Infinite could be incorporated as well. It’ll be interesting how it approaches this, because the twists and turns in the original BioShock deliberately leaned into the medium, and player agency will of course be stripped away in the film.
Nevertheless, locations like Rapture are so visually striking that we’re confident they’ll translate. There’s no additional information available at the time of writing, so we’ll need to wait for casting and production credits. What kind of approach would you like Netflix to take with this movie? Dive deeper in the comments section below.

They'll most likely butcher it with shoddy writing like The Witcher. My opinion, of course.
Netflix movies always confuse me as to where the money goes. They’re clearly big budget yet the movies almost always are rather cheap looking. Rapture is a really high-concept location and deserves levels of effort and detail that most likely won’t be seen. Besides, the story works due to the nature of gameplay, the whole ‘would you kindly’ part plays with the fact protagonists do whatever the player wants them to, which is often based on the HUD guiding you. I’m not convinced that will translate to a movie in the same way.
Im hoping this will means they can get Gore Verbinski to attatch himself to this again. He's not a master filmmaker, but i always thought his visual style would be a great fit for Bioshock.
@PenguinL
It seems their shows can often times be much better than the movies. Which is weird because often times they attach some very big names with solid track records behind the movies.
Meanwhile their shows are usually either passable at the very least or really good like Ozark or Dark. But those are few and far between. Quantity over quality.
Witcher is ok, so I'm not that upset about this.
My heart wants to have hope it will be fantastic but my brain tells me Netflix just might not have the chops to do it justice. The Last one off movie I remember liking from Netflix was El Camino and thats mostly because it was based off Breaking Bad so of course it would be great. Hope they pull it off though.
If one of the CG animation studios of "Love+Death+Robots" could do this I would absolutely be on board.
Or the studio behind arcane of course.
@ThorsHammer No it should be Baz Luhrmann. Bioshock the Musical!
Meanwhile us fans of Bubsy II wait another day for our adaptation announcement.
If the Last of Us TV adaptation and this turn out to be decent, I’m gonna be spoilt for game adaptations for the next few years.
Probably better as a series no? I would hold a slight hope it will be half decent as a series...as a Netflix movie I suspect it shall be garbage
Could be cool if they give this to the right creators, but I’m sure it’s probably just another built-in audience play where they’ll put the bare minimum into it knowing enough fans will tune in to guarantee some return.
I really hope the 'adaptation kings' benioff and weiss are not in charge.
Don't care unless there's a game to go along with it to help wash down the awfulness, to this day I still get nightmares of drowning in vomit after watching their Death Note movie.
I’d rather we finally get Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman season 2. Netflix doesn’t really have a great track record with their original content, but I love Bioshock, so… yeah, I’m expecting this movie to be like the live action Cowboy Bebop. In other words, I’ll pretend it doesn’t exist.
Netflix has a good record when adapting video game shows tho. Why are people quoting Death Note and Cowboy Bebop?
They also confirmed that a new Bioshock game is happening (although it seems to be in rather early stages)
@bozz Bubsy was robbed.
We can still dream of the Bubsy x Knack crossover, though.
@Lem1697 cause those are really really bad 😖 But yeah at best you can say they have a mix record so there's a chance this could be good.
@Juanalf Netflix's Cowboy Bebop was very good though. Probably the only bad part was how their portrayal of Ed didn't fit the tone of the show at all. At least Ed is barely in it.
@tameshiyaku @Fragile This project has been confirmed to be a live-action film.
@Milktastrophe these few seconds of ed weren't enough for me to really form an opinion on the performance, since the show was generally over the top. What did stink in an otherwise ok Show was Vicious... Poor portrayal and there was no mystery around the character. Obviously the writers were just trying to flesh out things in the wrong places.
@KidBoruto ugh, unless they're willing to put down a considerable budget, live action will most likely underwhelm in the looks department. Having a flooding underwater city will be challenging, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Adaptations of games into Film/TV never works. Max Payne was, for me, an easy story to make into a good film and they butchered even that.
I guess it will keep happening as long as theres money to be made.
@BRT15 I have always believed Tv would work, once American Tv got better (which it mostly has thanks to streaming), and ofcourse once they start trying with good source material. Call witcher whatever you want, it's enjoyed more popularity than any movie based on a game (i know witcher is based on a book but still). Probably why I'm sure halo will be warmly received and tlou can actually blow up.
It's simply because tv shows not only allow you more time, but they're also safer to nail than a two hour movie in general. They've just been less attractive financially but that'll likely change once a few hits emerge in the coming years. My prediction is that most of these 'want to adapt into film' video game adaptations will turn to tv once that does happen. Either it'll change before the movie releases and predictably flops or after (like assassins creed for example). But it's very easy to predict general trends once you have been doing it like I have for years so I'm pretty sure my prediction will be correct.
Guillermo Del Toro would make the best bioshock film
@tameshiyaku @Fragile Yeah it sucks, but hopefully the final product will still be a decent watch.
Here's the source that the movie will be live-action btw.
