As noted in our Elden Ring PS5 review in progress, the otherwise superb RPG suffers from an uneven frame-rate and some visual blemishes on Sony's current-gen console. Perhaps expected, given that the closed network test was a bit wonky as well, but still disappointing.
Anyway, those eggheads over at Digital Foundry have been putting Elden Ring to the test, and their early impressions match up with our own experience. The game has two graphical modes on PlayStation 5: quality, which boosts resolution and rendering distances by cutting the framerate, and performance, which lowers resolution and some visual detail to ensure a higher framerate.
According to Digital Foundry, neither option provides a particularly smooth experience. Quality mode varies anywhere from 30 to 60 frames-per-second — while almost never hitting the maximum — and performance mode fluctuates between 45 and 60. So yeah, far from perfect.
With the PS5 version of Elden Ring, performance mode is probably the way to go — purely because the framerate fluctuations won't be quite so noticeable. But what about the game's PS4 version? Well, this is where things get interesting.
Digital Foundry says that running the PS4 edition of Elden Ring on PS5 via backwards compatibility is actually the best way to play if you're looking for a stable framerate — a "smooth 60fps" according to the publication. However, resolution and graphical detail obviously take a hit since you're playing the last-gen version of the game. In other words, best framerate, worst visuals.
Hopefully, FromSoftware can issue a patch or two to improve Elden Ring's performance across all platforms. The developer's got an iffy track record when it comes to its games running well on console, but surely it can do better than this with Elden Ring — especially on powerful systems like the PS5.
Think you might be playing the PS4 version of Elden Ring on PS5, via backwards compatibility? Keep your frames high in the comments section below.

Not a FromSoft game without crappy framerate issues
I always find it weird that whenever any other games releases without a stable framerate, it gets torn to shreds.
But when FromSoftware releases a game with horrid framerate it gets a pass because "Oh it's the usual FromSoft jank that everyone is used to"
Well, there has to be a time where the devs have to iron out the wrinkles. It's 2022 and this is their 7th Souls game, they should be able to. No excuses.
Man, I was holding off for DF to see if I should get this on PS5 or PC. Looks like it's ass everywhere lol
Definitely disappointing to hear about framerate issues, but we’ll survive. I recently started a new campaign in Bloodeborne again, and initially the poor framerate was really distracting; 10 hours in though, and I barely noticed it.
Hope a patch is coming, but also, not the end of the world!
That’s the ‘easy mode’
😅
Its a From game so this is expected.
Outside of Scholar of the First Sin (a re-release anyways) they’ve never had a game launch on consoles with steady performance. Hopefully they can better optimize this soon and we don’t have to wait for whatever the next console iterations are to get a stable 60!
I'm torn. On the one hand every FromSoft game, except Dark Souls 3, has run like ASS, yet i've loved them all.
We also know they usually improve things a little over time. Remember Bloodborne's 1 minute+ load times at launch which they later halved after 'You died'?
But it's never likely to be a locked 60. Thankfully busy with Horizon and a few other games right now (Death's Door is a banger!) so will be waiting a few weeks at least.
@Deadlyblack
100% agree. How the hell is it getting 10/10 everywhere when it clearly has technical issues? This is why outlets that do video games reviews will always be a joke. How can games get docked points for tech issues and others get a free pass? Games reviewers are full of bias BS is why.
Skip. Dot dot dot
@Deadlyblack Never played or seen reviews for Bethesda RPGs, eh?
@Deadlyblack In my experience, FS's games get a pass on a lot of things that other developers would get torn to shreds for.
@Squanch the way I see it, when the overall experience is so amazing that it's one of the best games they've ever played, they give it a 10, not because it's perfect, but because it's something truly special.
For games that get a 9 or lower, they don't ignore such technical issues, because they don't find the game overall that incredible.
We do it with other things without realizing it. If x friend does something and he's our closest friend, we may overlook it. When it's just another (good) friend who does the same thing, their action may bother us more and we may even be offended. Same with colleagues, partners, etc.
If Elden Ring was a Playstation exclusive, every site would have taken two points off their scores for the framerate.
Edit
Btw I’m not convinced it’s a good solution.
Unfortunately DF doesn’t mention it but the loading time maybe impacted I think.
I don’t know I just wonder.
Anyway I’m not bothered about framerate ~45 sounds ok to me. I think different people may have different limits to where it’s in the way.
@Deadlyblack Couldn't agree more!! I have never understood why 'some' games are 'critical' darlings with numerous faults/issues that seem to be overlooked or at least not taken into consideration when reviewed.
I always just put it down to the 'genre' and obviously, the 'Souls/Borne' genre doesn't do it for me. But I still don't understand why they seem to get away with poor performance and relatively 'generic' visuals/animations.
Well at least it seems 'consistent' with other From Software releases so 'fans' will be OK and used to inconsistent frame delivery...
How is it that every single version of the game is screwed up in some way and yet FromSoftware gets zero backlash on this? FromSoft and Nintendo now get the 'optimization free pass' that no other dev gets.
No i dont think so..i can put up with a few drops...remember blight town in dark souls on the ps3? Even though the frame rate tanked into single figures it was still just about playable so this really is just a non problem..unless you are really that nit pickey..
If the worst it goes to is 45 I'll be fine. It's not ideal but it's not a deal breaker. As for some of the folks saying From gets a pass all the time I don't agree with that necessarily. I mean look at Bloodborne. The fanbase has been begging for either a PS5 remaster or PC port simply to try and get a better frame rate for over half a decade.
An unsteady frame rate doesn't automatically mean an excellent game is not an excellent game all of a sudden. It's just a flaw like any other flaw. The Last of Us 1 on PS3 had an unsteady frame rate but it was still an excellent game.
It's a ducking joke. 10/10's everywhere with nary a mention of the technical issues and jank.
Reviewers should hang their heads in shame for their hive mind mentality over this game.
@lolwhatno Or hats on to Pushsquare for not mentioning a comparison that might benefit owners of both systems?
@Deadlyblack definitely not a game that should be getting 10 out of 10 with issues like this… 9.5 at best
I find the file size interesting though - 44GB. But I trust I'll love the art style, it's always been that about them than heavy graphics data.
I wonder if DF played it with the new patch From have released for it (seperate to the Day 1 patch i mean)?
I can't say that I really noticed any problems when I played Seiko on my base PS4. did it have framerate problems?
@Deadlyblack exactly. Not a single review should be giving this game a perfect score considering every platform has significant optimization issues.
I have to play a game using a very dated engine on a new generation of consoles using a last gen version just to get it to run right?! Come the F on.
This feels like it's going to be an instance again where users will be reporting massive performance problems just like cyberpunk, minus the unfinished and garbage quality of that game. But technically from what I've read and watched from over a dozen or more outlets. The performance is bad even with pulled in distance detail, dated visuals especially, copy and pasted open world assets and poor-quality world textures, etc.
Years in development, reused assets and animations, hundreds of employees, and an engine that having used it this long should finally run especially on powerful hardware. To make matters worse From Soft have a horrible track record on addressing their technical issues post launch (anyone thinking a day one patch will save this is just not familiar with this). I genuinely believe there is one of two things going on here. One: they refuse to acknowledge serious problems with their engine, or Two: they don't have the technical talent to fix these things and refuse to seek new our outside help in doing so perhaps due to a certain pretentiousness in archaic management.
Don't get me wrong I'm a souls fan and Fromsoft fan since their beginnings with kings field
But this.... This is Bs.
@danzoEX @MarkMarky @Squanch Because gameplay and artistry always trump technical performance. It's why Switch games are some of the best ever made despite it being about as high tech as a Casio watch. It's why Ocarina of Time, which ran at 17fps in the UK, was regarded as the best game of it's day. It's why almost every FromSoft game which always seem to run poorly are still lauded as some of the greatest games ever made.
Nothing wrong with a 10/10 that runs poorly IF the game is good enough.
Gameplay and artistry >>>>>>> Technical performance
@themightyant agreed, unless it crashes every five minutes. Or the loading screens take a few minutes (Tekken comes to mind). Then, I'd say, no matter how great the game, it's hard to enjoy it.
@Apfelschteiner FromSoftware games actually have more of a frame pacing issue than an actual frame rate issue.
Bloodborne actually runs at a pretty solid 30fps through most of the game.
The problem is that some frames persist longer than they should which then then cause another frame to persist shorter than it should which then causes a judder effect on screen since not all the frames in that 30fps are evenly paced.
Unfortunately for Elden Ring, it also has framerate issues.
So if you have the PS5 disc version for your PS5, you can't play the PS4 version on PS5 via backwards compatibility in anyway?
I am sure that's the case but all these backward compatibility/upgrade path shenanigans confuse me.
I mean ,if the Game scored 10/10's and had framerate issues,maybe the reviewers enjoyed the game so much that the issues were not ruining the game for them..
Alot of people just dont care about that stuff
The framerate is one thing, I'm just glad it doesn't have awful technical issues like Horizon Forbidden West does. Here's another one I experienced. Hopefully no falling through the world into an infinite void in Elden Ring.
https://youtu.be/2e-cyPJ6or8
@KundaliniRising333 your mileage will vary with performance issues - I used to be really picky about a choppy framerate to the point I couldn't play a game if it didn't perform well. Then I played Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for 300 hours and it was like being dragged through performance hell. Honestly I came out the other side with a different outlook.
Breath of the Wild has its fair share of choppy frame rates and that game is fantastic.
But yes, performance, resolution etc. is a very personal thing. I am happier now that I am bothered less by it though. But of course, I'd love it to be locked 60fps!
@naruball
What you are saying is the very problem. Reviews should not be a completely subjective process where reviewers get to pick and choose when technical issues affect scores. There has to be some objective standards to the processes that applies to all products being reviewed. Some thing like technical issues during gameplay should not be subjective in any reviewers process no matter how fun a game is. If you dock points for one game and not the next one for the same issues, that’s being biased. Period.
Let’s take pasta marinara as an example: I know weird example.
If I were to say Prague tastes pretty good, but not great, but I think the label on the jar is the funniest label I’ve ever seen. I give Prague 10/10 for it’s great label that I feel makes up for its slightly lacking taste. That just sounds freaking ridiculous. That’s kinda of the equivalent of what you’re saying, or maybe I’m just hungry. lol!
Apparently patch 1.02 has dropped which does the following, including frame rate drops apparently.
Improved player controls
Addition and adjustment of BGM
Text adjustments
Balance adjustments
NPC event fixes and adjustments
Fixed frame rate drops under certain conditions
Fixed text bug in some languages
Fixed a bug that prevented the Xbox wireless headset from working properly
Ooooor.
Make it harder for yourself since the game is too easy.
@JJ2 Spoken like a true souls fan. I'm proud.
@Squanch "If you dock points for one game and not the next one for the same issues, that’s being biased. Period."
Not quite. Some games cannot overcome their technical limitations and are dragged down by them, others are still great in spite of them. It depends on how bad the issues are and if it impacts your enjoyment of the game, that is subjective. E.g.
Should BOTW be given 7s or 8s because it couldn't hold a stable 30fps? Or Ocarina because it ran at 17fps? No! Same here. By all accounts Elden Ring rises above it's technical faults.
@themightyant
Absolutely they should have been docked points. And no giving them a 6 or 7 is being a bit extreme and not at all what I’m saying. And yes, BoTW was given far to high of a grade.
If a game has any technical issues it should not be given a perfect score. That is an obvious and inherent flaw with the product.
@danzoEX Most reviewers don't give .# score tho.
@Matroska I never got these hfw bugs. There was a tallneck going through a tree, and invisible NPC (just had the head), shadow pop in and bad placements of pick up items. Oh and watchers being undergrounds which was the worst one, but it's not something it bothered me that much as it wasn't frequent, well besides the shadow pop in.
@Squanch There is no such thing as a perfect game. Every game has bugs. Should we never give 10/10?
10/10 does NOT mean it's a perfect game.
@Matroska You have not played Elden Ring yet to come to that conclusion.... It is an open-world, so expect all the bugs that come with these type of games (there is no need to be naïve regarding that). Also, just because you haven't seen them, doesn't mean they are not there. Expect to see lots of them when it releases.
@Matroska Luck of the draw sometimes with bugs, example you hit bugs while I've got over 30 hours in HFW with out a single issue here, been perfect and rock solid FPS as well.
@kyleforrester87 I hear you and I've played all of the souls game and I understand that this is a persistent problem, but that doesn't give them a pass as just typical from soft jank.
This is the same dated engine, and by now, not addressing clear problems with their technical expertise and engine, is essentially them flipping the bird to fans who have raised these issues for nearly a decade. One would hope that they would address them in whatever current game they build, which they have historically not done, or at least do what is needed to prevent it in their next game, which they have also not.
@themightyant
Actually, 10/10 is exactly what that is suppose mean. Perfect.
No, we shouldn’t. I’m 41 and and own a library of over a thousand games and have never played a game that should be considered perfect. Are there some that have come close. Absolutely. But, there has always been technical issues in every title I’ve played. When a game is fun and flawless in technical execution will be the day a game deserves a perfect score.
@GamingFan4Lyf Thanks for the info, if this is not a new thing, then I think I'll be fine with Elden Ring.
@Ralizah I really don't know how both From and Platinum got the cult following they have with some of their obvious problems. Probably should add Rockstar to that list, too.
@Squanch So you want a review scale of 1-9 out of 10, or 1-4 of 5?
10/10 or 5/5 has never meant the game/movie/album is perfect.
@Squanch not really. Scores are quite relative if you think about it. For someone a 7/10 means great, for someone else, pretty bad. The fact that a 10/10 exists means that it can be used on certain occasions.
A 70/100 in an American university is far from an excellent grade. In the UK it is enough to get distinction (i.e. an A).
@naruball Agreed. Ultimately it matters whether it affects your enjoyment. That is always going to be subjective. Bloodborne ran like ASS but is one of my favourite games. Skyrim had loading times that got exponentially longer up to around 2 minutes at worst on console and never held a stable frame rate either. Yet to many, myself included, these are some of the greatest games ever made.
Too many people stuck in the weeds worrying about performance when it's one of the least important things about a game UNTIL it affects your enjoyment.
I have to agree with some here that while certain aspects of the review process will always be subjective (and that's fine) there are other aspects that need to remain objective (the general quality aspect of the product). The scores given out by so many of these gaming outlets for this game show that hype and bias has influenced their reviews.
@naruball thoughtful analysis
New nick name
Fromsoft to no frame
@naruball Edited - I get your point about relativity but every score should reflect imperfection if flawed. If a product does have a flaw, it can be compared more favorably to other products but should not be considered perfect. If one person thinks the issues make the game an 80/100 and another 95/100 then fine. Once again, it should not be reviewed as perfect. I agree a 10/10 exists to be used when a product is overall great and free of technical issues, which has not yet happened.
Obviously, games reviews are mostly subjective to the person reviewing them: fun, graphics, enjoyment of battle systems, etc. However the one thing in a video game that should not be subjective is technical issues. Again, not saying it should be any particular score deduction. But all reviewers should at the very least acknowledge these issues via final score given in some degree. If it has minor tech issues maybe .5 - 1 point deduction and if it has major issues then a more severe point deduction. A perfect score doesn't ever have to be given.
We will probably never agree on this topic, but I did enjoy the conversation. Thanks for the civil discourse. Seems to be rare on the interwebs these days. Usually these end with some form of name calling. 😂
Is this because of trying to get the game working across generations? Would we have been better off with a perfectly optimized ps4/xbo game, with next-gen offerings down the line? Or if it was a ps5/xbsx generation exclusive?
Any other game dev would get sh** from this...but since this is From Software everybody just ignores it, I guess..
@kyleforrester87 I don't recall Xenoblade 2's framerate being particularly awful. It was the resolution. Particularly in handheld mode.
@NEStalgia Well, games with cult followings usually aren't the safe, technically perfect flagship games you get from the likes of Sony and Nintendo. FromSoft and Platinum have carved out a unique identity in terms of the sort of gameplay you can expect from their titles. The high skill ceilings for their games also helps attract... certain sorts of people together.
With that said, I've never seen a cult following quite like FS enjoys. So many Souls fans talk about Hidetaka Miyazaki like he's God or something. It's the sort of fanatical behavior Nintendo fans are often accused of adopting.
@Squanch should breath of the wild not have gotten a 10/10 because if it’s crappy frame rate? Frame rate problems or not, a masterpiece is still a masterpiece.
No game like this deserves a 10/10! This is a fact! The graphics are not a 10, the sound is not a 10, the multiplayer is not a 10, the performance in tested state is never a 10. The gameplay maybe would be a 10 if everything else was a ten because that impacts the gameplay.... so what the hell?
Wait for the blueprint remake!
@AgentGuapo No, it should not have gotten a perfect score. Are you saying if it didn't get a 10/10 it would not have still been a masterpiece? I thought it was one of the best games I have played in years but it wasn't perfect from a technical standpoint.
@Ralizah lol "....certain sorts of people"
But yeah, the phenomenon with From is utterly bizarre. Platinum (and Rockstar) get passes on things they absolutely shouldn't due to the cult fanbase, but I agree, it's nothing like From. The weirdest thing with From is they never seem to really aim to solve their weaknesses, they just double down on their (niche) strengths and leave the weaknesses on the table. I thought Elden may be different but it sounds like it's not.
@NEStalgia Well, there's no sense in watering down your game design to try and snag new players and risk alienating your established base in the process. That dedication to giving their base what they want is also why their fans are so devoted.
Elden Ring seems to make a number of changes that make the game somewhat more accessible, even if it still ends up being pretty challenging. Having to essentially opt-in to invasions, for example, was a great change.
What about playing the PS4 version on ... The PS4 , what's that like
Good thing it’s Fromsoftware because any other developer would be getting dragged across the coals for such a shoddy release but hey it’s open world souls so it’s fine and one of the greatest games ever made
@WallyWest
But why is it accepted?
How is it getting such great review scores if the game has issues like this?
Other games would get reamed for this. 🙄
It's a matter of optimization, they'll solve it in a future patch, I'm sure.
At least they didn't hard cap the frame rate on PS4 at 30fps like they did with Bloodborne...
I already preordered it on PC a few months ago, so i'm curious how that version truly fares... from what I read from the same Digital Foundry, it has frame rate dipping problems, and some loading issues... they even recommend not playing it on PC for now until a patch is released...
Oh well, tomorrow the truth will be revealed... finally, Elden Ring launches!
@Kang81 BotW was 30fps at best and often less and to this day also has bugs that let you fly and put the world into a weird state where you can give yourself extra hearts or stamina for free. Yet it's the game with the most perfect review scores of all time. This isn't aimed at you but rather some others here, but I find it funny that some of the most vocal critics of From in these comments are Nintendo fanboys. Nintendo are the kings of getting a free pass for things others would be torn apart for, even complimented for them in some cases.
Edit: I love BotW so this isn't a dig at that game, but me loving it doesn't change the fact that Nintendo get away with so much. Even get complimented for Ubisoft towers, of all things.
@rpg2000 I mean in the context that they're not being reported in reviews, at least. HZD and HFW were both reported as being buggy and they certainly are in practice too.
Also just sloppy, like there's a road that leads into the next area in the game but when you try to go down there, a system message just says "you can't go this way". Nothing is blocking you, there's no narrative reason, Aloy doesn't say anything; they just don't want you to go THIS way into the next area. I don't know why they couldn't just put a gate there. I want to say it feels very weak after BotW, but that kind of stuff would've felt like awful game design at any point.
@Deadlyblack exactly. Should never score a 97 on meta. I don't mind a few dips but it's pretty rough on all platforms which takes away enjoyment of the game hence hindering gameplay.
I won't bother starting my pre order tomorrow...not in this state... Sick of it. You would think more folk would speak out.
@Shinnok789 yes but it's not right is it? Your hard earned money, looking forward to playing it tomorrow and you hear it's rough on performance...
It's put me off starting my adventures on PS5...unless I can choose which version when I put my PS5 disc in?. If it allows me to install a PS4 version then I will use back compatible... apparently it's locked at 60fps but it's pretty much the PS4 Pro version.
I dont understand the problem people are having..its a from software game so did anybody expect it to be flawless? You have people here commenting on a game they had zero interest in and you have people who are,have played most of froms games and know the issues but are still moaning about it..i'd like it to be a perfect 60fps on my ps5 but i knew realistically that it was not going to be..has that stopped me from buying it? Hell no i've had it on pre order since god knows when and i'm going to love every minute of it regardless of such a minor flaw of it dropping as low as 45fps...going to love this weekend..
Games like this is why having VRR support on PS5 is important. I bought the PC version of the gane, but I know my crappy 3060 (60-80 watt) laptop won't be hitting 60FPS in this either, but it won't matter nearly as much due it being connected to a gsync display
For a studio obsessed with difficult gameplay, you’d think performance optimization would be a higher priority for them.
@Kang81 Because its never really mattered and the issues are never bugs or gamebraking. The only major issue performance wise what's happened with From's games is with Blighttown in Dark Souls though the big drops in framerate became part of its charm on PS3 and 360.
50-60 isn’t that bad tbh. It’s overblown.
PC probably has more problem.
VRR would REALLY be helpful here, Mr. Sony.
To everybody arguing over review scores.... all reviews are different. It just depends on who's reviewing it but it really drives me mad when people get hung up on the number given. Reviews are subjective & reflect one person's taste. A purely objective review would be very boring.
And this is one reason why I usually wait 6+ months for a game to be fully patched and go on sale.
OK wow, playing it now, and it's bad.
Very choppy, constant drops in framerates, noticeable and affects game play for sure. Even in the tutorial area it was coming through. But in the open world it's constantly fluctuating on Ps5 fr mode. Which is apparently the most stable aside from playing the ps4 version back compatible.
This is by far the worst performance I've seen in a from soft game (and we know it's not a high bar lol).
Hmm, so if a PlayStation Exclusive has a few bugs etc etc(that always get fixed ASAP) and it improves on the first game etc etc it gets points knocked off it when gaming sites review it!?!?(Horizon 2 FW is just one example) but if it's not a PlayStation Exclusive it gets a 10 out of 10 for not being perfect by everyone and the gameplay doesn't look like the next best thing in the world(as reviews make out)??? Hmm, I don't get it(well I do) Let's hope SONY don't buy FS because then they will never get any good reviews anymore I bet :-/ Saying that I would play this game in co-op mode. It would be less boring trying to kill a big boss for hours on end like that
Given that we're still waiting for a patch to fix Bloodbourne's framerate issues I won't be holding my breath.
@KundaliniRising333 weird, it hasn't been nearly that bad for me in the beginning. Definitely not that affecting nor does it really bother me that much. Sorry you're so affected by this because this game so far is a certified banger.
@LightningLeader 😳 pls don't cancel me sir/m'am
@GalacticBreakdown Its not really that it makes the game unplayable or bothersome. It's the principal: a game or developer should not get a pass on a more than a decade long persistent issue. Its not really acceptable to make excuses for them anymore, especially when they are literally using a ps3/ps4 engine. The game is essentially the same visually as Dark Souls 3, with very minor improvements.
Just as I wouldnt be cool buying a brand new car with engine problems, I don't particularly feel its right to be buying a delayed game that had a beta testing period, and still be a beta tester, especially considering the track record of fromsoft and their lack of post launch technical support
The reviews should reflect issues that are widespread across 5 consoles and all pc hardware. period
Also, you can love a genre, and even games from a specific developer but retain the capability to be honest and critical of persistent shortcomings. In my opinion, not doing so merely sends a message to not be better, no matter what the instance may be in life.
@Matroska
Oh, I hear you, and I agree. I'm not a fan of BotW. It does some great things, and I give credit where it is due, but it is far from the greatest game ever made that so many claim it is.
While I'm not a soulslike fan, I am rather interested in Elden Ring. My brother is a souls fan and has tried to get me into them. Sekiro almost did as I was highly enjoying it, but then I came up against the first boss and said, no, still not for me. I have up playing games that cause stress and frustration.
I definitely feel like Nintendo above all others get the free pass treatment, it rrally bothers me too. Even something as common as accessibility options in games today, and for as much as Nintendo likes to brag its games are for all, they're probably the worst offender of giving gamers the most bare bones options to play a game ever.
@WallyWest
But it should matter. I don't get the rationale that it's ok because..."it's a Fromsoft game, they're all like that."
I was listening to Podcast Beyond today and one cast member mentioned how the game hitched on him mid swing and resulted in him dying during a boss fight.
I'm not trying to just talk s**t about the game. I'll admit Fromsoft games aren't for me, but im actually interested in a Fromsoft game for the first time.
If a game can't hit its targeted framerate regularly, than that should knock down it's score.
I'm critical of all games, even ones I love. For example, Control was an absolute mess on base PS4/XB1, to the point it would become a stop motion game. Yet the game still received tons of praise and that didn't reflect on its score for most reviewers. I loved the game, but it was a mess and it was unacceptable.
I actually think Elden Ring may help reinvent the open world game genre, and I'm happy for it because it needs it.
Right now PC players are saying it's a mess on PC, bit why should that be acceptable and the game still given perfect 10's?
If it takes multiple patches and weeks or months to fix, if at all, a game shouldn't get a free pass and still receive a perfect score. I still think no game has ever deserved a perfect 10.
@KundaliniRising333
Exactly!
I haven't played it, but is the Demon Souls remake the only game of Fromsoft's that actually runs well? But it's not actually made by Fromsoft.
The least Fromsoft could do is hire the necessary talent to ensure their game is optimized properly and runs smooth.
But too many gamers give them a pass, so they can get away with it. 🙄
@KundaliniRising333 I think you're really blowing it out of proportion. It's an overreaction to say you're a beta tester for this game, implying that it's unfinished or that FromSoftware did something wrong releasing it as is. I strongly disagree with your opinion of it being the same as Dark Souls 3, this game is beautiful visually & it's open world, which is much harder on systems to render as opposed to single linear levels like past games. This game is also cross-gen so unless you're playing it on PS4, you should notice how good it looks visually in contrast. I am confused by you even buying this game if you had these opinions already, as you said this game has beta tested & plenty of gameplay footage has been out, so you must've known the engine they were using & visual presentation before owning the game.
I'm confused as to why everyone cares so much about the praise being heaped onto this game by critics & players. I will say, you say all this isn't bothersome then you go on to list all of the above as problematic. I'm playing the game and none of what you listed is bothering me or hindering my gameplay experience at all. And it seems that's the same with almost everyone else playing it. I'm sorry all of the above bothers you, but to imply that people are giving this game a pass on things just because they think so highly of it, is kinda like saying "your opinion is wrong & this is why." If people and reviewers like a game, let them like it, no reason to argue against that unless the critical & player perception of the game really bothers you that much. Just enjoy it for what it is, which by my & many other's accounts is an amazing open world video game that's a true evolution of the FromSoftware style.
@Kang81 I'm confused why you even care about how games are perceived if you don't play them. Does it offend you or bother you that people love Elden Ring or FromSoft games? I genuinely don't understand why other people's opinions matter about this. You shouldn't let things like this bother you, just play the games you like, enjoy those games, and talk about why you like them. There's really no reason to argue against critical reception or player perception about games you don't play. Because in the end, it won't change people's opinions. When people really love or enjoy a game, they're willing to overlook some of it's shortcomings because all games have them. All of them. No game is perfect, someone, somewhere will always fault it for one reason or another. I promise you, all your favorite games, there's somebody out there who disagrees & has a list of it's shortcomings. But if we love a game, they tend to not bother us because it connects so much with us.
@Kang81 Well 10 doean't mean perfect and most reviews covered console versions not PC. As i said on console at least the performance issues have never really mattered, it only matters if constantly effects the game and well it doesn't so it doesn't matter. End of the day enjoyment > performance, if the game is too damn good then performance rarely matters unless its really really awful like Cyberpunk on PS4, BotW has performance issues especially at launch yet no one really cared as the game was too good.
PS5 is 1440 at 50-60 fps, PS4 is 1080 at 30 fps!!!???
@GalacticBreakdown
It bothers me because Fromsoft and Nintendo often get free passes on problems while reviewers and gamers will ream other games for it.
I will criticize any game, whether I love it or not or even if it's my favorite game ever. I'm not trying to hate on the game or developer, I know they make great games. Even though they're not for me.
I'm just critical of everything and when it happens to be something I don't often enjoy, people just usually give me a response like yours.
I dont want to diminish anyone's enjoyment of a game, but if a game is going to be praised as one of the best games ever, it should be as close to perfect as any game can be. Obviously performance issues should detract from a score. The whole, "well its a Fromsoft game, so we expect this" is a poor excuse.
Another problem is scores in and of themselves. People put too much value in a number. Oh, if it's not an 8 or above it's garbage and I won't play it. That's stupid.
I guess I just get more critical when games with issues get near unanimous praise while ignoring the issues. Not many reviews I've read for the game even mention performance issues.
I'm actually highly interested in Elden Ring, a first for me in regards to Fromsoft. Well, aside from Sekiro which I did enjoy, but found it too difficult. So it's a great game, just not for me.
@WallyWest
There is no perfect game, but to the masses, a 10 would likely be perceived as just that, a perfect game. I do get that, and I know games are difficult to make. BotW, performance aside, is limited by hardware and it was a first of its kind for the series. I'm not even blindly praising BotW, it has tons of issues for me.
However, this happens with every Fromsoft game, and it's not a hardware limitation. It's a developer issue. So why do they get a free pass?
If any other developer constantly released games with performance issues, they'd be heavily criticized.
Now Elden Ring clearly isn't a disaster like Cyberpunk, and it's not even as bad as Remedy's Control was on consoles for a long time, but it still seems so many reviewers choose to ignore the performance issues.
I cant think of any games out there that people vehemently defend more than a Fromsoft game or BotW. It's as if people are personally insulted when those games get criticized. It's just absurd.
@Kang81 I don't understand why you think it's getting a pass. Like I said when people love a game & connect with it, whatever issues it has become very miniscule in contrast. Issues become minor when the game does so many other things well. I don't know how else to express this, that when you love a game, a few issues just don't bother you much. You're aware of issues but they're very small compared to what you love about it. That's just what fans do. Fans of Nintendo & FromSoft love those games so much that things like a few performance issues are very minor & doesn't affect their enjoyment of those games. It's not "giving it pass" to not be overly bothered game's issues especially if they're minor.
Wow, so weird little story my version of Elden ring on my PS 5 did not download and update to the 100 to patch and it didn't do it until just last night I don't know if that's normal for everyone else on the 26th but the game runs so much worse on PS5 what's funny is I was playing it so I saw like in real time after switching how much they f**** the draw distance; now it's not very far in front of you where you don't see any detail. By doing this what they did is just made the game look worse it was such a farther draw distance before with the exact same choppy frame rate performance like I don't understand if they just did the same fix that they tried to do on PC but there's definitely an asset loading problem now we're when you switch to different sites of Grace things take a little second to load in even though the games loaded up like all that stuff that people have been talking about that some of it I didn't see now you see it with this patch like it's definitely worse I don't get it.
Because of this draw distance nonsense now popping is way more noticeable as well it's just boggles my mind how the day one patch can make the game worse that the first I watched a few videos where they talked about it being worse on PC but it's definitely on PS5 is well-liked some of the same exact stuff this stutter that PC has isn't there it's just framerate dips but the terrible hit to draw distance and Poppin is horrible
@Squanch same here, man. I greatly enjoyed reading your posts. Funnily enough, a few years ago, I totally agreed with you and argued against others on push square who thought that imperfect games deserve a perfect score.
@GalacticBreakdown
I get that, but I can love a game, but still heavily criticize it's faults. Just because I love a game doesn't mean I'll overlook it's faults.
Remedy's Control for example. I adore the game, but it was a long time before it was considered to have acceptable performance.
Why would I give a game a perfect score for what it **could** be, after months of fixes? A game should be reviewed for what it **is** on release.
I'm not saying it's not an amazing game, but faults shouldn't be overlooked because we're enamored with a game.
