A third live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has gotten the nod, despite the second film still being a couple of months away. Paramount is betting big on the Blue Blur, also announcing plans for a live-action spin-off series which will air on streaming platform Paramount+. According to a press release, Idris Elba is already on board to reprise his role as Knuckles in that.
“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed,” SEGA boss Haruki Satomi said. “We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them. 2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday.”
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie ended up becoming the top-grossing video game adaptation of all-time, pulling in over $320 million at the Box Office globally. It’s since picked up more fans after streaming on platforms like Netflix, so we’ve got confidence in the sequel becoming another big hit when it arrives in theatres on 8th April.

They must have crazy confidence in Sonic 2 being a hit.
What the heck?
At least let Sonic 2 come out first for the love of heck.
I guess they announced this for the 3 and Knuckles meme.
That was quick. I plan on taking my kids. Should be fun.
I'm betting the 2nd is where Robotnic becomes obese.
They’re going for overexposure too, it seems. Not every single franchise needs spin-offs.
Not going to be easy to top 320 million, but with the addition of knuckles and Idris elba's involvement it may just do it
I didn't even see the first one yet lol
But hey...tone it down. There's a thing called "fatigue" and I think we might get it if you continue...
I don't know about the move of putting all of your chips on one table but let's see how the 2nd movie fairs.
@AFCC Fatigue? What is that...? /s
People keep saying the same thing about the MCU movies. Yet here we are at 27 movies and 5 TV shows. But yet they keep racking in money by the truck loads.
@Floki
Yeah. The consumers can only blame themselves.
With that said, I think the over reliance on established IP is ruining Hollywood over the long haul.
I Wouldn't Be Surprised If Amy And Metal Sonic Will Be In The 3rd Movie Or Even Shadow.
@Fragile these movies they make cant hold a candle to sonic adventure 1 & 2 or even heroes. but keep spewing that tired and contrived “3D is bad” meme , i guess . the 90s is still not coming back either way .
I throughly enjoyed the first movie and I'm seriously looking forward to the second plus hearing this news makes me happy and a bit nervous at the same time.
Sonic is the type of video game movie we don't get very often and I don't want them to milk or possibly even butcher something special.
Like I said on Nintendo Life they need to be careful here.
@nessisonett They don't but if something is well made which to me anyway the first movie was I'm ok with it. Just don't want to see them go overboard here.
@RubyCarbuncle @Uncharted2007 Same thoughts here, loved the first film and am excited about seeing the 2nd...hopefully they don't delay it or end up dumping onto Paramount+
I honestly look forward to it. Sonic the Hedgehog is the most competent video game adaption movie so far.
Just please, all I ask... call the spinoff series "& Knuckles". It's the only way to do it right
@nomither6 Some stuff works better in 2D. Sonic 3D adventures are just not that great.
@Flaming_Kaiser that’s an unpopular opinion . sonic adventure wouldn’t be as fun in 2D . all 2D does is limit a games potential . this fixation with a game-design that only existed because of limited technical capabilities now being considered some sort of standard is astonishing . I guarantee you most people do not want sonic games to be limited to 90s tech again . sonic mania was a success because nostalgia sells , but generally speaking , almost every game franchise today is 3D and they’re all better than their former 2D . even most fighting games are 3D , just on a 2D plane . & the ones that are 2D is for aesthetic purposes .
I didn't think I was going to but I really liked the first film. After watching it I bought the SEGA collection on PSN Well not for the Sonic games(I could never get into them. I really tried to like them) I got it mainly for Sonic Pinball which is BRILLIANT
Christian Bale as Shadow LETS GOOOOOO
I watched this via Netflix & thought it was a genuinely good movie.
Sonic 3 with Shadow & based on SA2 storyline would be a dream come true.
Paramount+ - that's the US only streaming service that's stolen Star Trek franchises away from Netflix, isn't it?
Fat lot of use for anyone outside of the States...though the UK might be getting it from summer?
Seems like a sure bet the second one will be a hit. Audiences mostly loved the first, so it has that momentum, and it's including a lot more elements from the games while being more action focused. At bare minimum it'll earn the same box office haul I think.
@nomither6 I loved several brilliant 2D games so i have to disagree just put in some effort.
@Floki they are not 27 movies about the same character though...
@AFCC And these movies aren't all just about Sonic, and the TV is Knuckles show.
@Floki yes but Knuckles is on the second movie, and I assume he will have a big role
