Wow, just like that? It's not often that Atlus gets straight to the point, but following a teaser countdown, Soul Hackers 2 has been fully revealed. It even has a (worldwide) release date!
This looks like a modern Shin Megami Tensei experience — a party-based RPG with all the familiar demons. And no, it isn't exclusive to a Nintendo system, as has been the case with just about every new SMT game in recent memory. It's actually coming to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on the 26th August, 2022.
For those totally out of the loop, this is some kind of sequel to the original Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, which was a SEGA Saturn and PlayStation game back in the 90s. It was ported to 3DS much later, in 2012.
Looks pretty cool, doesn't it? Consider us quite surprised in the comments section below.

Imagine Atlus just announcing a game with a worldwide release date. Is this a dream?!
In fact, it's so not exclusive to a Nintendo system that it isnt even releasing on one!
....Which does make me wonder how this will sell. Probably just fine given its got 5 total platforms holding it up in the West. Not so much in Japan.
@ShogunRok they gave SMT5 a worldwide release date as well. Welcome to modern Atlus. Still making weird decisions though.
@Haruki_NLI Let's have the same for Persona 6, please.
@ShogunRok please refrain from distracting me from Horizon and Elden Ring with comments about Persona. All games deserve their time in the sun.
@Haruki_NLI I was about to say but PC but GPU prices in Japan have probably stopped Steam from gaining more market share. Regardless unless Atlus pays up for a miracle port a year after the fact like Doom or pushes it out the door like Lichdom Battlemage or Cyberpunk 2077, I don't think the Switch could get anything more than a cloud edition.
What I most like is that Nintendo is getting nothing, lol
I really don't get Atlus sometimes. Since I cannot get on Switch, I will most likely pick up on PS4.
@Vincent294 Looking at the game, it appears to be using the Tokyo Mirage Sessions engine....so......ya know.
I dont think this is a case of "It cant run" and more Atlus being its usual self - Seeing money and coming up in a rash.
@ShogunRok That's a dream. Or Maybe Persona 6 Royal for the same platform Persona 6 is already on.
Weird this isn’t releasing on Nintendo honestly. Either way, definitely getting it, Soul Hackers is one of the best SMT games and I’m down for a sequel.
@Haruki_NLI Is it? Mirage Sessions was proprietary engine, SMT V was Unreal, SMT 3 HD is Unity, anything is possible really. I guess Unreal 4, especially since they wouldn't port to Xbox if it wasn't easy. A proprietary engine would need lots of work to port to Xbox, but not Unreal or Unity. Due to the Switch's GPU, performance would be miserable without more port time, which costs money and port delays always hurt sales.
If it gets anywhere near the critical reception that Shin Megami Tensei 5 did on Switch last year… I might dip my toe.
Atlus again being Atlus by bringing this game to every single plattform (including XBox) except the currently most popular one: The Nintendo Switch
Considering games like SMT5, Astral Chain, P5S run on the Switch I really don't get why this isn't coming to Switch
can't say I played the Soul Hackers game on 3DS...but either way, I'm excited for this game!
finally, another JRPG to look forward to in 2022
(considering that I'm losing faith and excitement for Granblue Fantasy reLink)
Looks amazing! Loved the first one on 3DS.
These. These are good news! It looks really cool, and I'm always up for some more Megaten.
It's like a dream. A dream where Atlus doesn't wait around on a western release date.
Pinch me.
Lol what a slap in the face as the first one was on 3DS, il just play it on my playstation 5 as this looks too good to miss.
But I have to wonder what the hell Atlus are thinking, every game in Japan sells best on switch and its the main console there right now, they will be losing out on potentially a million sales at least. Atlus must not like money.
Or
A switch definitive edition will come out a year after launch just like with dragon quest 11s, but I wouldn't hold my breath
It gives a completely different vibe from the original which I played on 3ds, this one looks just like another persona, which isn't bad but the dark sci fi feel seems to have gone
The characters look pretty damn meh tbh but then I see all the wonderful demon designs in a turn based battle again, and I get all excited. So looking forward to this
Judging by the Digital Foundry video on SMTV (I own the game but haven't started yet), it's probably a case that Switch performance for Soul Hackers 2 would be rough so either gets a cloud version or a release awhile after the other platforms.
Never played the original but I like the look of this one. Does anyone who played the original recommend playing that before this? Like are the stories connected at all?
Shocked to see the Switch be the sacrifice in favor of Xbox. Day one on PS5 for me!!
My interest is definitely piqued.... I'm sure I'll check this out.
@ShogunRok no west release? I'll guess I will have to wait a few months.
@mariomaster96 To be fair, who doesn't own a PC, Xbox or PS to play multiplatform releases? The switch alone doesn't play over 90% of the big games released.
@RevGaming No sorry, this is a worldwide release date! No waiting required.
Well, that’s… soon. I still will be playing this on the switch, resolution be damned. I need to be able to play my Shin Megami on the go.
Edit: damn… no switch version?! ☹️
As for the quick turnaround, maybe it’s due to high asset reuse from SMTV, I think all those demon models I saw there were the same that I saw in SMTV.
@ShogunRok ooooooh babeeeeeh.
thanks
...yeah, Nintendo needs more powerful hardware if damn MegaTen games from the side of the company that tends to release all their games for that ecosystem are skipping the Switch now. The first game is still Nintendo-exclusive in the West!
Kinda torn on whether I want PS4 for the trophies or PC for better performance. Probably PS4, since it means I'll get a physical version of the game.
I'm guessing it would run terribly and be too much of a hassel for Switch. I really don't understand Nintendo, how it easy would it be for them to release a Switch 2 and make it close to the same power as PS5/Series X or at minimum Series S?
They would then get all third party releases and all their first party stuff would get giant boost in all departments. I doubt Sony would be able to stop them, but they don't and actively try not too make their systems too powerful. Like after N64 and Gamecube they threw in the towel for powerful systems.
@RevGaming Many people only own a Switch
But that's not my point, I'm just saying that it is weird that a japanese company who releases a game that will be very popular in japan doesn't release their game on the console that is very popular in japan too
Looks like Microsoft outpaid Sony to keep this multiplat 😂😂
Day one for me. It's on my sister's birthday, she will wonder where I am, but it's for the best.
@DomGC that trailer looks like something the Switch CAN handle.
It’s Atlus being morons once again
@mariomaster96 Maybe it can't run it or they think it will look bad. Idk.
@Juanalf because chip shortage is stopping Nintendo from releasing a powerful version?
That’s mainly the main reason why. Another thing is Switch is still selling
@Juanalf the fastest smartphones around don’t get close to PS5|XSX power and cost almost a thousand dollars, so yea: not easy at all. Likely not possible.
@DomGC
This. The models in that trailer even look taken directly out of SMTV. I do wonder, though, if they are running an experiment and this game hits Game Pass day one or early, even if only in Japan, allowing Japanese audiences to stream it to their phones, therefore providing a mobile option.
You can see how outdated the Switch is when Atlus know it will have a hard time running this game there, therefore they decide it is better for it not to release it there... at least not until Nintendo decides to release a better console (which by the looks of it.... it will not be anytime soon).
It is Nintendo own fault, simple... This is something that will keep happening more often than not as years passes too... Funny thing, if you want to play this game on the-go, you will still be able to play it using the Steam Deck instead (for any that buys that system).
Looks rough, maybe early PS4 graphics. If it gets a dub I might be interested, but it looks a little rough.
Atlus are idiots.
It's a cool trailer. Looks like some Persona influence with that vibrant style.
Now we know what this announcement is, I'll probably go and get the first game on the Nintendo 3DS eshop before that closes for good.
It's easy to forget just how old the Switch is now. I got one recently and was surprised that Fire Emblem looks more like a PS3 game than a PS4 level game.
@Bunchesopuppies that artstyle looks... off
@nessisonett once again, they are.
Well glad not stuck on Switch. SMTV had wires that became dashes on my 4KTV because resolution got so low.
Definitely on my list
@crimsontadpoles Dunno how it is in the UK, but in the States, Atlus issues permanent digital price cuts for their 3DS games. Soul Hackers is only $19.99 here.
@Ralizah For the UK, Atlus games are priced very inconsistently on the 3DS store. Some are still full price, while others in the same franchise can be heavily discounted. Soul Hackers is oddly cheap at £9, so at that price I'll snag it without a second thought.
Bout time, can't believe this is completely multi-platform, including Xbox systems!!!! Now if they'd just port SMT 5 to playstation and PC.....
Day one and turnbased thats even better i want it.
Now if only they could be bothered to port/remaster over the first Soul Hackers game onto PS5/PS4 and Switch.
Holy crap! That looks awesome. Persona x Digimon CS.
This might turn out to be an unexpected surprise. Never played the original, but judging by the trailer it’s ticking all the right boxes for me.
@Ralizah I'm from the UK and got it off the E-Shop for 8.99 last year.
Looking forward to a SH sequel but still can't believe it's releasing on Xbox and missing the Switch. Must be issues that put Atlus off because SMT missing the Switch makes no sense, even less sense than when people complain about P5R not being on Switch. I found it hilarious seeing Nintendo fans blame Sony for the game not being on Switch because they paid for it not to be on there.
