Amazon Prime Video is on the cusp of signing a live action television adaptation of God of War, a Deadline report claims. PlayStation Productions – the new movie and TV subsidiary of Sony’s gaming division – has been busy lately, bringing Uncharted to the big screen, and also beginning work on The Last of Us and Twisted Metal adaptations. And it looks like God of War is next in line.
Deadline says that Amazon Prime Video is in negotiations for the series, which will be helmed by The Expanse’s Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer Rafe Judkins. Sony Pictures Television will also be involved, while Amazon Studios will likely co-produce, assuming the deal goes through.
Streaming services like Amazon Prime Video are in a fierce battle for content right now, and PlayStation Productions is playing the field. HBO has already got dibs on The Last of Us, which is shooting right now in Canada. Meanwhile, Peacock recently signed Twisted Metal, which will star Anthony Mackie. Amazon Prime Video has already grabbed the rights to Fallout and Mass Effect, so God of War seems like a good companion.
Fergus and Ostby, the pair touted to be in charge of this live action God of War adaptation, earned an Oscar nomination for Children of Men and also co-wrote the script for Iron Man, so are a safe pair of hands. It’s unclear whether the TV show will depict Kratos’ assault on the Greek or Norse mythology, but we’re going to assume the latter with God of War Ragnarok right around the corner.

My concern with this is I'm just not sure how you cast Kratos. I know amazing things can be done with CGI and so on, but I've never seen a convincing live-action Kratos before.
It always looks wrong.
I think it's funny, but I'm sure it will end up being extra annoying down the line, that all of these Playstation shows are on different services. We've got TLOU on HBO Max, Twisted Metal on Peacock, now GOW on Prime. Can't wait for Ape Escape on Hulu and Gravity Rush on Paramount+ 😂😂😂
@sajoey Sony Pictures completely playing the field. They've got everyone bidding against each other for everything.
I guess, seeing as they didn't make their own streaming service, it's not a terrible position to be in.
Wow with the boom of gaming this generation it seems like everyone wants a piece of the pie. Hopefully this turns out well!
@get2sammyb honestly I don't blame them one bit. They've got the IP, make the studios pay for it! I respect it. A bit surprised with no Netflix shows or movies yet though.
@sajoey I'm sure it will happen. I'm a little surprised how much they're taking on at once.
I don’t see how this works. Kratos works great in games but the cosplay never looks quite right in live action. Can’t wait for Chris Pratt as Kratos and Tom Holland as Atreus!
I'm looking forward to Mass Effect far more. I don't feel God of War will make a good show.
I'd like to see them make a show for Returnal. It lends itself pretty well to an episode structure.
Also the should cast Francis Mcdormand to play Seline. That's so perfect it's scary.
Wheel of Time producer?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (Darth Vader voice)
The Real Question Is Which Are They Doing Young Ghost Of Sparta Kratos Or Are They Jumping Right Into The Recent Stuff With Old Man Norse Kratos?
@PlayStationGamer3919 "That or SONY could make their own streaming service with their own movies and tv shows"
There's many things in this world we desperately need, another subscription streaming service isn't one of those things.
“Fergus and Ostby…earned an Oscar nomination for Children of Men…”
One-shot confirmed! 😜
Yeah I think Sony’s actually done the right thing by not doing its own streaming service and letting everyone fight over their content.
Amazon: we enjoyed the father/son dynamic in GoW
Kratos kills Zeus, brutally
Amazon: 😬not THAT father/son dynamic
Please do it justice. Will this be inspired by the dad Kratos story or early crazy violent Kratos? I’m not sure about Amazon prime shows they haven’t been very consistent but will wait for more details with a lot of interest about this one.
@get2sammyb Sony could never get their own streaming service to take off, they sold it in 2019. They used to own Crackle.
Would Christopher Judge be suitable for the part of Kratos?
@Juanalf Put it on Crunchyroll. It's not anime or Asian drama, so it's kind of a joke, but there's potential if they added a general movies and TV add-on subscription.
I've thought to myself, they could do the add-on subscription for general movies and TV and just put on the titles that other services aren't fighting over. They've got 1000s of titles you can't watch anywhere (subscription), so why not a cheap option on crunchyroll or you watch it with ads.
I think that Kristofer Hivju would be perfect for Kratos!
Don't see the point of this.
Yeah, not going to sub just to watch these shows. I think they should have just made it free to stream on PlayStation for PS+ members (maybe with a different tier) and release it individually to buy on digital stores and physical copies. Asking PlayStation fans to sub to multiple services to watch these shows is unreasonable. At least release all the shows on all or one service.
Christopher Judge, who currently plays Kratos, would be outstanding as live-action Kratos. Search YouTube for "Teal'c vs Ronon scene" from from Stargate Atlantis to see him in an awesome verbal and physical confrontation with Jason Momoa.
I oddly felt like this was already in development. Since so many playstation productions products have been announced I guess I just assumed of course God of War is one of them.
Ugh, who wanted or asked for this? Probably only Jim Ryan.
Very curious if it's old or new GoW. I can't see them doing the new game as it's slow in parts and the special effects cost would be astronomical. Same for the old games except not as slow, but not as much story either.
The first Scorpion King movie starring the Rock has a very similar storyline and it's the worst movie I've ever see. They cut out 15 minutes of the plot I watched in deleted scenes to see what's going on.
I think there are a lot of large men who could pull off Kratos but I'm not sure how to make it into a tv show w/o turning it into comedy Hercules. I haven't seen the Conan movie starring Jason Momoa but he could probably pull it off. Alan Ritchison currently starring in Amazon's Reacher has the physique for young Kratos, not the voice though.
Maybe if the Rock looks good in Black Adam Amazon could lure him with a billion bucks.
Think I'll just wait for the next Uncharted.
@art_of_the_kill Literally in the article: The Expanse’s Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer Rafe Judkins want this. And it isn’t necessarily happening yet.
On the bright side, at least The Expanse is actually an excellent show.
If it was Netflix i would have more confidence in this project Amazons stuff just doesnt have the same quality
@velio84 I 100% think & feel the same way about it . An (animated) movie is one thing , but an entire TV series is meh
@Royalblues a hand-drawn GoW in the style of avatar the last air bender would’ve been way better for a fact & this ain’t even out yet
Id be up for a big budget movie but not hyped about a series because it would probably be really boring mostly & not as action focused as the games
I've mixed views on amazons shows..preacher started off great but then went downhill massivley in the 3rd and final series..the boys is brilliant though even though its messed with the plot from the comics..hanna was damn cool but god awful ending..i hope this is good..
@Gbarsotini Meh, the producer is more the person who sorts out the bills and gets stuff booked these days. They have limited creative control
@Gbarsotini actually really enjoyed wheel of time, but that's coming from someone who hasn't read the books. Witcher s2 was a hard pill to swallow taking the books into consideration.
I guess my no.1 choice for Kratos would be Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. He has the acting chops and physique to pull it off.
I'm not very hopeful cause of the way amazon handled Wheel of Time.
I'll only watch if Christopher Judge returns to play Kratos.
This one worries me more than the others. God of War is dark and brutal. I imagine to do it well you would need a HUGE budget. A demigod fighting other giant mythical creatures, demigods and gods.
How do you manage the blades of chaos?
How do you justify your anti-hero’s actions and murderous rampage?
Seems like it would need a lot of artistic licence to work.
And how do you cast Kratos? Physically The Rock is a good match but acting wise he’s not right. Too kind, too nice. Kratos is seething, brutal, a barbed coiled spring always ready to explode.
That said the story itself (spoilers for a very old game) would be amazing for TV. The son of Zeus going on a genocidal purge of all the gods, taking out demigods and mythical creatures on the way… is the stuff of fantasy
@sajoey Sony should have an option to add these shows to PS+ after a period of exclusivity. I don't know what Sony was thinking when they funded that superhero series. It would have been awesome if they released a series based on their own IP. Times have changed now and we are in the new era of TV. I think perhaps Sony were wise to stay out of the streaming wars, but they have a lot more business getting involved than services like Peacock.
I was hoping to see the likes of God of War, Bloodborne and Horizon showing up as anime on Crunchyroll to be honest.
God of War especially feels to me like it would get on better as an anime series.
@get2sammyb Martyn Ford
Bautista would be a great Kratos!
I don't know about how this ip will translate into a movie. I love the games but this character is very quiet and most of the time he fights. Sure there is a story in there that could work for a movie but a series?
As someone who grew up absolutely loving the old Greek myth movies like Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans etc. I’d love for them to go full on greek myth for at least the first few seasons. It’s such a rich but under-utilised mythology.
@get2sammyb Considering the trend in the last few years, it might be Chris Pratt as Kratos and Tom Holland as "Boy"...
@trev666 I'm the other way ,netflix paid big money for big stars then released rubbish with them in ( Adam Sandler now Ryan reynolds for example ) at least for me Amazon bring out some good stuff for the first 1/2 seasons then the quality drops off a lot ( Lucifer for example )
@sajoey gravity rush would be an anime.
So yes Sony, please make one.
I like some gaming media going live action. Not sure about this one, seems like one of them things best kept for video games. Hope I'm proven wrong.
@Gbarsotini Not seen Wheel of Time... is it that bad? The producers from The Expanse is a good move though - you can't deny that show is one of the best Sc-Fi shows in a long time.
@sikthvash the books are even better if you haven't read them - partly because characters in books don't get killed off just because the actor decides to move on... (not got anything against actors who do this mind, it's their decision, just a shame sometimes)
Mark my words...Tom Holland as Kratos!!!
@danlk1ng Non-specific spoiler alert for Expanse One of them got fired from the show for sexual harassment and assault, so they killed him off. Hoping to read the books at some point ^_^
@sikthvash wow! I didn't even know about that, I thought it was just their own choice - hence my original comment
@danlk1ng yeh, not a nice guy evidently. Liked his character too, so it was a bit of weird situtation as they basically freeze-framed a shot in post-production, wrote him out and re-shot some additonal footage to tie it all up.
Rather than an expensive live-action series Amazon could have made an adult animated version along the lines of Legend of Vox Machina. They could be as fantastical, sex-ridden, violent as they like and still keep the budget down.
This would also allow them to get TC Carson as the younger Kratos and Christopher Judge as the older.
@sikthvash It was just meant to be a lighthearted comment, but I really didn't like the series, I don´t know, its a very strange series, confusing, with characters I really didnt care for, but take this from someone who hasn't read the books. I know the books/series are very popular, maybe its just me. But the expense is awesome.
@sajoey
As someone currently subscribed to three different streaming services, they need to just put every movie and show onto a single streaming service at a higher price so I don't have to fumble around three different UI's. I can afford it.
If they do this, my only concern is that they actually adapt the saga from the beginning and not just the Norse stuff. GoW4 does not work without the context of the first games. Whenever someone says they never played the old ones, but they loved the new one, I just think they have really low bars for enjoying things. Not to say GoW4 isn't great, but you can't really appreciate Old Kratos when you never knew Young Kratos
Please not bautista.. please not bautista….
Am I right in thinking that Netflix was rumoured to have Bioshock. I’m shocked Netflix hasn’t got any of this yet.
Not so keen on GoW being on TV.
@get2sammyb Depending on what time line they use, Dave Bautista would be a good actor.
@Gbarsotini Heh, no worries! Wasn't sure if it was universally hated / one of those shows that's reviewed well with critics, but not with fans.
