Originally a PS Vita title, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is, in our humble opinion, one of the best and most well rounded instalments in Falcom's long running action RPG series. It was ported to PlayStation 4 in 2017, and that version still runs great — but that isn't stopping NIS America from re-releasing the game again on PS5.
Unfortunately, the reveal trailer and the accompanying press release say nothing about port's current-gen enhancements. We assume that it'll run at a higher resolution, but aside from that, your guess is as good as ours. There's also no word on whether an upgrade path will be available if you already own the title on PS4.
Hopefully we get some clarification ahead of its PS5 launch this autumn. Have you already played Ys VIII? Would you play it again? Get shipwrecked in the comments section below.

Got it on Steam and it's a great game.
I JUST beat this game for the first time a couple months ago, and even if there's absolutely no enhancements, it deserves more attention and more time in the sun. I loved loved loved this game from beginning to end.
Do you know if we are having languages support?
Oh, hell yes! I own the PS4 version and would rebuy it on PS5 if that’s what it comes down to. Falcom has my money and support no matter what.
Weird that they’re doing this one and not IX.
Oh weird I just played this in January and loved it. As the article said not sure what the upgrade will be. It already ran at 60fps from what I could tell.
Great game, but if its just resolution, maybe work on 9 first ?
Fantastic game, but I don't really see the point in a separate PS5 version.
Never got around to the PS4 version cause I wanted physically and that's almost impossible now. So if this comes with a physical I'm absolutely buying it this time
I always intended to get into this series at some point. I'm a huge Trails fan as I'm sure many would guess looking at my profile picture. I tried YS Origins on Vita and thought it was okay but I didn't finish it. Maybe I should start with this one instead.
Best Falcom game ever, combat, soundtrack, characters, this game is amazing! Happy for the PS5 port, but only because it´s becoming really expensive to buy this game. Ys was never about the graphics (but Falcom could improve their engine).
@Korgon This one, 7 and memories of Celeceta are all excellent, especially on the Vita. If those don't hook you on the series, nothing will.

@Mauzuri @Bentleyma I believe IX got a PS5 patch a little while back. Not a native PS5 version, but it does take advantage of the console's additional power now.
@Enuo
I actually did pick up Memories of Celeceta as well on Vita as well at some point so maybe I'll start there instead. Appreciate the recommendation.
Maybe my favorite game from the PS4 generation.
@Ralizah
Agree, unless they give some sort of free or cheap upgrade I won't touch it untill a serious discount.
@Mauzuri you can say that again, I'm not too fond of turn based combat to begin with but jrpgs have a special place in my heart. But after playing dq11 (on console) I didn't wanna see any japanese games for a while.
I already got the ps4 version .so not buying that one.word up son
Wonderful game, well deserving of more attention 😁
I wanted to like this but it was awful!
One of the best JRPG's I've ever played and playing this gave me feelings of the old Ps1/Ps2 days when great JRPG's were releasing every month. God I miss the days when Japan actually cared about console gaming.
Had only played 1 or 2 older Ys games before when I bought on sale and played Ys VIII on Switch about a year ago. Ended up enjoying it for the most part for a pretty good while, but ultimately ran out of gas. Although I remember it running well, some of the graphics weren't great. I understand that it was a port. If the PS5 version gets a major graphical overhaul, may consider it again ... when I finally own a PS5.
Bruh I just got the plat 5 months ago in a re-run of the game. Would have loved to have seen this come out earlier lol.
Why not just release Ys IX as well?
Excellent game, I have the ps4 version really fun game with great soundtrack
I highly doubt there will be any upgrade paths, they will expect us to pay full price.
Oh my god yes!!
Hopefully a physical re-release please 😀
It's a great game however I do not see how they can justify this. It's not exactly rare from my searches, and the PS4 version doesn't have horrible load times that need fixing.
Things I'd hope for - a high frame rate mode since the game is an action RPG, improved textures.
That said I will replay this if my PS4 disc gets me a free upgrade.
That's a game I want to play for a long time now. I will wait this current-gen version. For all I read, it's a type of RPG I enjoy.
I don't understand all the love for this game. I got it due to all the hype and, idk man... stiff animation, mediocre gameplay and everything else. Terrible dialogue. Very repetitive. It's not outright bad, but I just don't get it. Everything about it feels "bargain bin".
@Mauzuri With the PS5 patch, Ys 9 runs in 4k with a locked 60fps. It is a considerably improved experience. For what it's worth, Ys 8 is one of my least favorite entries into the series. I played it early when the translation was shoddy. I still think they're chasing the high they reached with Felghana.
@Mauzuri funny you should mention that. I thought DQ11 was alright. Not impressive, but playable, but with baaad music. But I agree there seems to be a "JRPG pass" when it comes to criticism of new entries into beloved old franchises.
