We all know that the greatest game on the PlayStation 5 so far is managing your storage space – it’s certainly the one we’ve spent the most time playing. Grand Theft Auto 5, which will be cheaper than expected when it launches on new-gen consoles next week, will steal a chunk of your SSD’s capacity, with the file size weighing in at 86.837GB.
This is the preload size for both the single player and GTA Online mode, which is actually a lot smaller than the PS4 version. That weighs in at well over 135GB these days, so it’s another example of the PS5’s compression helping to bring overall file sizes down. Of course, GTA Online is an absolutely gigantic package these days, spanning tons of vehicles, weapons, and activities.
If you need to expand your PS5’s storage space then you can find a list of the Best PS5 SSDs through the link as well as How to Install an Internal PS5 SSD. At this point, with so many great games out, we’d recommend biting the bullet – the PS5’s library has really exploded these past couple of months, hasn’t it?

I moved the PS4 version off the SSD this morning to download the PS5 version, fair swap overall, it's about 5 or 6gb smaller on the '5
Good job I've fitted an extra ssd....
GTA 5 was a game I always meant to go back to and never did.
Maybe the PS5 version is the one where I finally get to hear the whole tale!
I shelled out the £8.75 this morning and it’s downloading onto my PS5 as I type. Can’t wait to dive back in next week!
@Kairu Unclear about file size of GTA Online standalone, but yes it's free!
Whilst 10 bucks is a good price for the game, I'm still gonna wait until it releases to see what the reviews/technical state the game is in. Rockstar has to earn back this trust from the community...
@Kairu Yep think you log into Rockstar website and transfer through that
I can't find this on the UK store at all.
I've searched and searched
I have 2 5TB external HDs specifically for PS5 so if I do decide to buy this storage space won't be an issue.
For online part of the game, can you update existing downloaded data on Ssd or will it require a new download separate to the Ps4 game data? Either way I suppose it is better to download the Ps5 data and free up space versus the Ps4 data...
How big is just GTA Online
@Kieren1234 Not confirmed yet as far as I am aware
@Kairu Yes: https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/gta-5-how-to-transfer-ps4-save-data-to-ps5
@get2sammyb so what with this being ‘essentially’ a separate game from GTA Online-PS5, will the GTAV-PS5 trophy list not include the online trophies? 🤩
My GTA V PS4 version fully updated is at 87gb. The vanilla game is 49gb. Where do you get 137gb?
I'm just curious as to whether R* has actually addressed some of the core quality of life issues a game this old carries with it...
For example:
•Making applying body armor and taking health snacks much more accessible as opposed to calling up and navigating through the free roam menu and just generally tidying up the online Free Roam menu
•Allowing you to sprint simply by clicking the left analog stick instead of having to hold it down (when using Standard FPS controls)
•Allowing you to have short dial contacts on your phone (such as Lester etc) so you don't have to navigate through a now 10 year old phone menu setup and generally making the phone interactions much faster, more responsive and more up to date/intuitive.
There are loads of other QOL improvements they could make but these are just some that I HOPE they have changed 🤞🤞🤞
@get2sammyb Still find it curious that at present GTA V &/or GTAO are only visible via the PS5 store, but not the web browser store on PC. (Down Under user here).
Not visible under "Coming Soon" or the "PS5 upgrades" tiles/sections,& searching manually just brings up the PS4 versions or the GTA Trilogy PS4/5 versions. Can't think of too many occasions where that has happened!
As for GTA V ps4,my version is around 67Gb...which gives some indication of my refusal to engage with the GTA V Online bloatware!
Given Mark Cerny talked about the possibility of separating single/multiplayer portions of ps5 games,it'll be interesting if this is reflected in the final product as far as the install goes.
@RubyCarbuncle You can’t play PS5 games from an external drive though.
Could we get the option to NOT install the online portion of the game?🙄
Anyone pre-ordering this has clearly not learnt their lesson from the GTA Trilogy.
Wait for reviews on performance and then decide.
The 4 tb m.2 I installed in the expansion slot was not cheap, as we all know, but it was certainly worth it.
Uh, so what's the security issue caused by GTA5 PS5? Is that just a blatant lie in the tagline?
No it won't, I played it when it came out on the PS3 and have no intention of buying it again. I would only be interested in a GTA 6, but I don't think they're capable of making anything good enough to stand alongside the previous games anymore.
@Angelus3K I know that's why I mentioned storage space not being an issue. It's a minor inconvenience having to move games each time but it's better than nothing.
It won't.
Because I can neither get my hands on PS5, nor am I planning to buy GTA re-releases for every platform.
Not sold on getting this yet. I haven't played since I beat it on the PS3, but at least they aren't milking their fans at full price still.
Dunno how or why but I was able to download the PS5 version straight from the store without having to pay anything. I had the PS4 version already installed, but will see if I’m actually able to play the new version upon release.
@Milktastrophe Blatant lies?
"STEAL a chunk of your SSD..... Security Concern. Seems you're overreacting to a bit of wordplay.
@Alan_cartridge_ in software, if something is a security concern then it puts the users at risk such as making their personal information available to unauthorized parties.
Eh it's worth only having to pay $10 USD!
Is it possible to ONLY have the story mode? I have zero interest in GTA Online so would happily annexe that from the campaign to save storage.
@Milktastrophe Thank you, but I am aware of what "security concern" means. I think it's you who has missed the point.
If you had genuine concerns over the security of the game you could phase it such as: "Hey, I noticed you mentioned security concerns in the tagline, what's that about?". The response is as I've explained it was a bit of wordplay. Harmless and intended to be funny.
The alternative would be to question the article as you have with a question and then accusations of "blatant lies". That's no longer a question that's an insult and accusing someone, especially a journalist of being a liar because you misunderstood what their intent is not a small thing. They work their asses off for this site and they are not impervious to your outbursts.
Being kind costs nothing, thinking of others is free.
I downloaded the free online version of gta5 for PS5. Do I really need to pay for the main game as size is identical.
